[IC] PBT Hive - Group Buy January 24th!
« on: Wed, 04 September 2019, 07:38:02 »

PBT Hive

Group Buy Starts January 24th!

Design

So this set probably looks very familiar and that's because it is! GMK Yellowjacket was a shelved project by GTRX and I wanted to get it going again, but as a pbt keycap set instead of the originally planned GMK. I've made changes to the kits, colors and renamed the set Hive. The colors are all custom pantones. I hope you like it!

Kits

Mega Kit $125 USD

Core Kit $80 USD

Monochrome Kit $35 USD

Novelties Kit $12 USD!!

Renders by MetallicCharles & Pheonixstarr

TGR 910 RE

Godspeed75

Minivan

Cygnus

Polaris

How are they going to be able to dyesub this? Reverse dyesub for that many keys would be ridiculously expensive, no?

Eh, I didn't know ePBT were willing to reverse dyesub a whole set. That insane amount of QC it would take is probably not worth it for them.

Did they confirm to you that they'll do it?

Haven't they done a black on grey kit before?
Then again they seem to be really inconsistent on what they can and can't do as of late.

Black on grey can be dyesubbed normally, as it's not a lighter legend on dark background. This is Light legends on dark background, it can't be dyesubbed normally - which means it'd have to be done some other way, like reverse dyesub/allover-dyesub.

To my knowledge, ePBT have never done it, and probably for the reason that it's too much to do currently. They do reverse dyesub accent keys because it's a lot less work (I think for epbt kuro/shiro, or did they outsource?). If they leveled up and are willing to reverse dyesub whole sets now, then that would be awesome and opens up a lot of possibilities!

Perhaps that will drive the set to use the white alphas after all?

(could I, then, buy a kit with just the mods? I wonder...)

Also, gotta say like usual, I'd love to see the 4 min. ortho keys in base or spacebars.

Gonna be interesting to see if they're willing to do it and the cost, but last I heard their reverse subbing wasn't as sharp as their normal subbing and had some color consistency issues.

I mean ePBT sets are usually cheaper than GMK sets, and any cheaper alternative is appreciated. I hope to see more ePBT sets soon!

I do like 40's kits ;P but I don't think there's going to be enough interest to make a 40's kit for this set.

I'm also curious about the reverse dye sub process - is there such ePBT set yet?

Very much this. EPBT was reluctant to reverse dye sub even a couple of keys, doubt.png that doing an entire set is a possibility. Even if it were, the level of QC would have to be out of this world. I don't think EPBT is quite there yet.

Also, ePBT issues aside, you're missing R1 End and R1 PgDn for 1800 support, and you appear to have accidentally cut off the numpad into a separate kit.

9.9.19 - Removed grey alpha legend base kit and renders. There has been and overwhelming amount of people who prefer the yellow alpha legends, so that will be the available main kit for Hive.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Like what other have said, it's not easy doing reverse dye-sub PBT.

It's been done (including double-shot PBT with various quality), but again, not easy to convince the vendor to do it.

If it's a cost thing (higher QA cost for epbt for the reverse dyesub) could this be quantified? Would it add 10%, 50% to their costs?

Would be nice to know what their parameters are, so we know what ours are.

ePBT = Enjoy PBT = Cherry profile

Ahhhh, thanks. Any chance of a Colemak option?

btw, the OP image/graphic says eBPT, not ePBT.
that's a typo

... Yes. That's what I figured and why I pointed it out in case you hadn't noticed. Just trying to be helpful.
Ortho. Always.

Really interested if the reverse dyesub actually delivers results as intended.  Have there been successful implementations of reverse dyesub released onto the market in other keysets?  Or is this hopeful thinking for a potentially emerging technology?

We are working with the factory to see how much it will affect price by breaking it into smaller kits. If this works out, it will prove the idea and we will go that way moving forward. The new molds we designed should allow for it. Stay tuned!

Considering the recent issues with infinikey's consistency, it's rather disappointing to see this set go from the golden standard of consistency (GMK), then to a mid-ground of quality and consistency (ePBT), to where it is now. If this was going through ePBT I was probably going to be onboard after pricing, even though I'd likely prefer GMK above all. For now though, this is a pass due to the manufacturer. All signs seem to point to this being a middle of the road manu, and with their new prices getting near that of ePBT, I will be undoubtedly passing for that reason. If you could get this back to a more reliable/consistent manufacturer, I'd be interested again.

Forgive my ignorance, but if ePBT is better, why not .... just use them? The manufacturer makes money on these runs I'd imagine, so if they can do it, why would any of them say no?

I think this was always going to be PBT, simce ABS looks nice until you use it for a week, so presumably that's why GMK is out as they don't do PBT.

From what I have seen with other sets Epbt had a lot of issues getting reverse dye sub right and are reluctant to take on sets with a ton of it involved. Infinikey on the other hand is attempting reverse dye sub on the regular and is going to improve as sets get run through. Personally, I would rather see this attempted in PBT than see another set go GMK. ABS is meh and GMK prices are insane. No one should have to pay $40+ for a freaking numpad, much less an UK iso set.

Hi,

I am currently having samples sent to me so I can see the dyesub quality in hand, but from the sample pictures it looked pretty good. Also planning on making one big base kit as opposed to having many child kits. Once the final kits are decided upon I'll post updates here. cheers

Once the final kits are decided upon I'll post updates here. cheers

Samples sent from infinikey?

Considering the recent issues with infinikey's consistency, it's rather disappointing to see this set go from the golden standard of consistency (GMK), then to a mid-ground of quality and consistency (ePBT), to where it is now. If this was going through ePBT I was probably going to be onboard after pricing, even though I'd likely prefer GMK above all. For now though, this is a pass due to the manufacturer. Agree 100% with all your points above. I have heard infinikey pbt keycaps sound much worse than epbt. This is gonna be a pass for me as well.

I see what you did there... "heard they sound much worse..." Nice.

I honestly haven't heard a comparison of ePBT and Infinikey tho. What makes them have such a different sound? Plastic density?

Haven't seen/heard anything about them sounding "much worse", curious where that came from.

As well molds were updated since katakana was ran (as seen with the newer CandyBar sets) so any comparison would be off for any future sets anyways. I will have my candybar set sent fairly soon and have an ePBT set I can compare to on a board but honestly I don't see how they would be much different beyond just thickness of the caps given they are both PBT.

Just got the newsletter from The Key Company which included a PBT Hive announcement! For those interested, the listing is posted here: https://thekey.company/products/infinikey-hive

It's a shame that the kits were merged together and no yellow pbt spacebar though :'(

EDIT: I meant no split yellow spacebar

That's InfiniKey for you. I'm surprised we didn't hear about this here first...

There are yellow spacebars in the Mega kit, are they not PBT?

Agree, they also removed icon mod kit. They are putting the spacebar in Mega Kit and Yellow Accent in Novelty Kit. I dont think I ever need that much key for 60% layout.

Sorry, but I dont think this will a great buy.

The large kits are due to Infinikey's very large MOQ for all kits - child kits have a MOQ of 300 from what I've heard. The core kits are a new thing TKC are trying out to provide more basic compatibility at a lower price. It's worth noting that the "mega" kit will likely be around $120 and the core kit will be around $70-80, based on previous sets/statements.

Only way to get a yellow spacebar is the mega kit? Also, no render of the novelty kit, so not 100pct sure what's in that....

From the TKC discord:

the only reason it happened here was because for some random reason before they left for CNY they sent us a quote for hive, we had looked at it and even though novelties were included in the mega photos they had done it separately.
We don't wanna push the buy back more weeks because of an issue as simple as quotes missing

Can’t believe the only way to get accent spacebar is to buy the maga kit, and you miss accent esc and enter if you only buy a mega kit, so you need to also get a novelty kit lol.  Out

So, hoping the kits will change seems to be in vain.

For myself it's not a big deal, idc about the yellow spacebar and just want the hive looking one. Buying a couple extra keys doesn't matter, we are spending hundreds on keyboards.

It's crazy that to get this combo requires buying the mega, monochrome and novelties kits. I'd have enough keys left over for 2 more keyboards that I'd rather put different keys on. Mechmarket is going to be a mess with everyone selling their trash...

I want it, but I just don't think I can, unless its dirt cheap.

Core doesn't contain 2u shift. Including 2 2.25u shifts is for 660 layout coverage.

I mean it’s not really that crazy... you want a secondary alpha color and a secondary spacebar color, with most GMK you’d have to buy 3 kits.

Accent spacebar is quite often not in base, it's not exactly a common thing. It has also already been covered that the mega kit and novelties were meant to be one kit.

Hey Guys!

Just to cover a few things, first of all, big unfortunate mistake with the Novelties not being in base that unfortunately would have taken weeks to fix as they gave me the quote the day before CNY was slated to start so I would have had to wait on another quote that would have taken about 3 weeks to reproduce, so we've tried to compromise just a little bit.

For TKC only, if you order the MEGA Base set along with the novelties/accent kit, you will get 15$ off of the Novelty order. This makes the novelties cost 10$ total.

We hope this at least fixes the problem a tiny bit and shows that we are always listening to you guys and trying to provide the best service possible. Apologies again and thank you for your support of our business.

Splitting the monochrome alpha's from core/ mega kits is rough, even after tkc's kind gesture. Decent looking set, but I'd rather buy a new keyboard for the price of the caps.

Haha, that's the thing right? At this point there's so many sweet boards on the horizon, the urge to throw on cheap Taihao PBTs is just so tempting. I'll still keep an eye on this though, and see if I can work it in. TKC's deal makes it a little more bearable.

But Taihao isn't doing reverse dye-subbing... and doesn't offer nearly the compatibility/customization you're requesting...

Base ($80) + Monochrome ($35) = $115, add in Novelties ($25) and it's $125 (with TKC discount -$10). I'm having a hard time thinking of a comparable keyset that offers 2 alpha kits and like a million compatibility keys with novelties in reverse dye-subbed pbt at that price.

If the argument is $125 is too much for any keyset then OK, but I don't think there's much joy to be found on the GB keyset threads on GH.  I'm not trying to shoot down any criticism of this keyset, but I'm just not understanding the motivation for some of the negative feedback.

Eh, it's just an opinion, I've spent twice as much on keysets I thought looked more interesting. This is a pretty basic looking one (imo). Doesn't make it a bad set, I still really like it, but it is money I could apply elsewhere. Clearly TKC took feedback from this forum, and gave a little boost to help convince people to buy in. Sharing opinions is always valuable.

It's a forum, people share opinions, negative and positive. That's kind of the point. No need to defend, can just accept and carry on. These being keysets, I imagine a lot of the "value" people are determining here has less to do with keys/$ and more to do with aesthetic, and very subjective.

My personal issue is that there's little accent caps in each set that I want, but don't want to have to buy every set. Accents could have been moved to a separate pack, or the core and mega could have at least had the same accent keys mixed in.

Such a weird decision to separate the yellow keys into two separate (but complete) sets. I could kit out two keyboards if I bought the mega, and the core.

I think you missed the part where he mentioned you had to buy the Mega kit to receive the discount. So that's $125 for mega, +35 for mono, +10 for novelties(-15$ discount). $170 total

It would have been one hell of deal had the discount applied to the core set as well.

TKC updated their post to add "MEGA" before "Base", my original post was thinking Base = Core.

You're right, with the Mega it's not as good a deal. You'd be getting a ****-ton of keys.

Alright guys, we've been listening. And we think this is a fine change.

we're completely dropping novelty cost to 12$, regardless of what kit you purchase.

This will translate to proxies as well.

Is this available to order from candykeys? It's on the site, but doesn't seem possible to buy it...

Hey my friend, it should be, but most of the proxies work on different time frames so it should be available in the next 2-3 days

Bless your heart. Still a shame about no yellow spacebar in core kit but will probably end up picking this up.

Appreciate all you're doing!
