I got the idea of aluminum RGB keyset about 2 years ago but things didn't work out back then due to high costs on production and the lack of confidence on selling such high priced keycaps.
I've been working with HolyOOPS for about a year now and the idea of making aluminum RGB keyset started coming back to my mind when I knew they can manage to maintain the costs on producing such keycaps at a relatively low level. Not to mention the reputation of high quality products they're known for. So I talked to them about three months ago and asked they to make some samples for me which turned out pretty satisfying. After several modifications on the original samples during the past months, now we're finally ready to push it to the market.
They're Cherry profile. 1.25 set and 1.50 set will be offered. Both printed and blank version will be available. The GB price will be around 70-80 for each set depending on quantity ordered.

Wow, this looks very nice.
I still have a blue aluminum spacebar from you, that would match perfectly :thumb:

Damn Feng, why are you always the one coming up with new Metal Gear for us addicts?
Presuming you are still using the OEM profile as you haven't mentioned anything about it yet......
-
Sorry forgot to mention, they're Cherry profile. We'll see how it goes and decide if we need to make OEM profile in the future.

A 1.25u and 1.75u shift would be very nice!

On the one hand it would be nice, on the other I wanted to save some money.

Any underneath pics of the stems?

Any underneath pics of the stems?
If it is like the other holy oops caps, there will be 4 triangular Alu stems without a ring on the outside.

That's what I'm thinking.

I have been waiting for this! I am so in. Might even get two.
-
Holy crap these caps looks absolutely beautiful
-

maybe later in the future there is a keycap set Holyoops ;D
-
Will these be a regularly stocked item at any point? I definitely want it but can't swing it any time soon.
-
Okay, this is actually pretty awesome.
-
I've always loved HolyOops' packaging; it's phenomenal.
I would want to get some, but I'm too broke :(
-
Are the legends engraved and filled?

We'll consider making those in the future if sales go well.

We'll do a group buy first in just a few days, then I'll most likely put them on shelfs in about 3 weeks.
Are the legends engraved and filled?
They're laser engraved, not filled.

How much will be the price difference between the GB and the actual store price?
I am not sure whether I can afford this set right now...
-
Are these doubleshots?

Nice, thanks!

Are these doubleshots?
If its aluminum, is it even "shot" at all? lol
-
Lol idk I was thinking maybe they would shoot plastic into the aluminum or something

I really liked it when we had Niqmods (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=29663), fragile as they may be.

But these are the real deal...

That's a good idea

It's (aluminum) melted and poured into a mould (metal or sand cast, who knows). Although a lot of hand finishing would be required before it's anodized (or painted) in the final process.
The whole process of making these caps is far more intensive than simply pouring plastic into moulds.
-
The legends are printed, according with the OP information.
Process should be die casting, lost foam, or lost wax.
-
how much will these weigh? wonder if my switches can withstand the weight, haha.
-
That looks absolute amazing. But will probably feel really weird (cold) and hard on the fingers compared to plastic.

Plastic, while it is not the fanciest material, it feels warm and with nice texture under the fingers and it has just the right weight for most keyboard switch mechanisms; yet, some may be more inclined to have look over function.

Or maybe some people like the feel of aluminum keycaps better than plastic caps...

waiting for gb
-
is the GB going to be ran on here? Geekkeys has them up for sale for like $85.
-
GB has just been approved: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=76086.0

erased
-
they are so beautiful. but a little exps for me.
-
I agree, they look awesome but I don't have that much money to blow on modifiers alone >:(
-
Do these wear like the zinc ones?
-
Did Cherry or GMK give you IP and patent rights for the font and ergonomic keycap profile?

Form cannot be patented, as far as I know. Font may have copyright, but nor sure if it is in public domain already.
-
I love the caps I have that you made... I'm very tempted by these :)

I don't think fonts can be copyrighted.

I don't think fonts can be copyrighted.
A typeface can't be copyrighted, but a digital font can be if it contains certain elements. From wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property_protection_of_typefaces):
Based upon the decision in Eltra Corp v. Ringer, and the clear and explicit actions of Congress, the status quo regarding typeface copyright has remained unchanged. The idea that Typefaces cannot be copyrighted in the United States is a well-settled law with a long history.
However, in 1992, the US Copyright Office revisited its 1988 decision, and determined that the latest digital outline fonts in fact had elements that could be protected as software.[4] Since that time, the Office has accepted registration of copyright for digital vector fonts, such as PostScript Type 1, TrueType, and OpenType format files.
This is part of the basis of the unpublished opinion in Adobe Systems, Inc. v. Southern Software, Inc., decided in 1998, wherein Judge Whyte found that Adobe Software held a valid copyright for its Utopia font and that it had been infringed by the defendant(s) in that case.
So it really depends on the source of the font used for these keycaps.

Learned something today, thank you.

Do these wear like the zinc ones?
The anodization would last for at least 3-4 years, and the laser printing will never wear off.
Did Cherry or GMK give you IP and patent rights for the font and ergonomic keycap profile?
They're not exactly the same font, so no worries. They just look alike.

You meant Cherry replica?
Does your comment means that the color will faded over time. What about the corners and edges?
-
Too expensive for aluminum.
-
Interesting, would like to see these in CMY anodization as well - if not still looks great.
Would also like to see them offered in uniform colors (all red, all yellow, or all blue).
-
Oh these are nice
