Title: Post your console gaming setups
Post by: noisyturtle on Thu, 25 September 2014, 01:50:12
BOOM! New thread, because a thread for this doesn't already exist.

Here's where you post your console gaming setups. I know, I know, PC gaming master race. And I agree, BUT ****'s not so cash for console gaming so here's where you can show off your collections. Who knows, maybe we can actually get some retro gaming trades going, or at least some more pics of where you do your couch-lock thumb exercises.

Here's two quick shots of my current setup. It's nice because now I am living on my own, and don't have anyone telling me that books belong on the bookshelf :))
I'll post some more in-depth shots of my collection if there's interest in this thread. I know a few of you have some nice collections...

Peasant stations!

Are any of those connected to the tv for glorious 20fps goodness?

Peasant stations!

That's actually a semi-rare Dell early HD model that supports both 720i and high ratio scanline inputs. All connected through a SCART and adjusted ratio for dead-on replication for both early HD media as well as any input prior. The voltage will short out any Atari system though (I know this from bad blue-smoke experience.)

The PS3 is hooked up to my PC via HDMI and optical sound because that TV doesn't support HDMI. Pretty proud of the neat cable work behind the bookcase. All those systems are modded and connected via S-Video, except the N64, for optimal retro gaming goodness.

Come at me PC snobs. My Neo Geo collection's probably worth more than 3x your entire PC setup. Neo Geo Master Race!

This thread is extremely relevant to my interests.  I need to secure another bookshelf or two, and then I will post a proper picture.  It doesn't look that impressive right now.  :(

I do really like your shelving unit you have there, that's pretty cool.  Nice setup.   :thumb:   I will say though that for maximum retro goodness I would use a CRT.  :P

I'm constantly on the lookout for a Sony Trinitron KV-36FV310
Seriously... I'll give clack(s) for a good condition working model.

Nice setup.

I just have a console hidden in my desk, hooked up to my monitor. I can leave both my console and PC running and use the monitor setting to switch between the two. So really, my console setup is just my PC setup.

Just finished putting my computer set up with new video card. Now I know it's a lot of Razer. Functionality wise, everything is fantastic, but I would not have purchased it myself. They were all gifts.

For everything modern I agree. But nothing in the world beats playing Mega Man X on it's original Super Nintendo hardware, hell, the same goes for every game on a sixth generation or lower console. It's never even nearly as good emulated, compressed, processed, chopped-up and put back together to a modern port. It's the same reason someone would prefer a Model M, a Ferrari F50 GT, or a 21 year old bottle of scotch.

I suppose I have more of a "hybrid" gaming setup. I run both of my consoles (Wii U and PS3) to my monitor that I use for PC gaming.

You don't really have the whole collection in boxes still, do you?

3 SNES seems appropriate.  You never know what'll happen.  Though, that said, I would buy more games before another system, given the size of my collection.  SNES is the one system I never had as a kid ( ).

That's the best handheld system ever! GBA had so many amazing titles. So many regrets leaving it at a friends house all those years ago :(

I can recommend sd2nes for many many hours of snes/famicom fun and action without paying for overpriced games each time. Not cheap but a good investment when you're serious about playing snes.

Or an Everdrive. Sure they cost $100-150 even for the NES versions, but being able to download the entire NES library in alphabetical order all on one cart and play it in an original system is rad as ****.

Yeah, in all honesty I'm still torn.  I like the idea of selecting a cartridge from the shelf.  I was never a fan of mass collections of digital files in non-physical form (don't ask me about my music collection though...   :-\ ), as I have a hard time picking something.  Physical media works much better for me.  So I may consider a flash cart, but I'll probably stick to cartridges.

I personally collect nes cartridges and have that awesome sd2nes with over 11k roms on sd (ok, I will never be able to play all of them, but its good to know that they are there and ready to play).

And the nes cartridges are way cooler than the snes ones and look better on the shelf ;D

I loved playing snk vs capcom and pacman using the 4-way gate mod with the clicky joystick.

Ugh....you've got me looking at PVMs now. But I don't understand how to hook them up to my SNES or n64. I found this article (http://www.tested.com/tech/gaming/456719-best-crt-retro-games/) that talks about SCARTs and other bits of hardware but I'm a plebe. Help me understand jwaz.

Shoot! I have my ngpc in a storage container.

If you bought the namco museum game for the ngpc, it came with a thin circular piece of plastic that fit inside the d-pad.

It worked "similar" to the original 4-way joystick on an original Pac-man arcade. It made it so you can make turns quicker since you aren't wasting precious milliseconds clicking the diagonals.

I'm going to look for a picture online.

Edit 1: oops! It wasn't namco museum. It was just released as pac-man.

Edit 2: It includes the "cross ring" in the package. See picture. (http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_kzok9x9tFI1qa5kxw.jpg)

Not a sealed collector myself, but they are out there and willing to pay insane amounts for sealed games. A few years ago I sold a sealed Super Metroid and bought an AES with the proceedings. You probably could've gotten $40-60 for a sealed Crush Roller(more for the EU version) and bought like 8 more NGPC games ;)

I'll get back to you on that.  I just did a search and most of the ROM sites are down.  I've got a HD somewhere from a dead PC that's got them on there that I'll hook up.

I remember there being a whole folder of homebrew ROM's.  Not sure if anyone is doing development anymore; at one point I wanted to do a port of DarkStalkers but never progressed beyond the 'desire' of it.

I'd love a homebrew schump on the NGPC besides metal slug.

I would love a homebrew port of SNK's Victory Road (Ikari Warriors 2) ~ most people consider it meh to average but I loved that game.  It's one of those situations where you love everything about a game - even wanting to find the original designers just so you can buy them a beer even when everyone else thinks the game is average.

edit: The Atari St only had a 3 voice sound chip and the music for it came out great so with some love the NGPC should be able to handle it.

The ingame play for this and the Amiga version got TOTALLY boned - despite being 68K machines w/ specialized chips.  The NES port was also crap and they changed a bunch of stuff. :(

Consoles only Xbox 360 and RetroPie.

(as posted in setup thread awhile back)

I do need a new picture though, as I removed keyboard tray so my stuff is on my desk, and made a make-shift monitor stand as well.

If you look for a ROM pack I'd say they should be fairly complete - these were all tiny games.

ROM pack = just slang for a .ZIP file full of dumped rom images from the cartridges; in the case of homebrews that will be the only way to get them.  There might be a flashcart floating around too that you can load the images onto to play on a real Neo Geo Pocket.

BTW: If you are going to get into PCE and are contemplating CD-ROM games - stick with the Duo R.  Much more reliable!

I was not a big N64 guy, always hated the graphics and controller but I do occasionally miss Bangai O and Killer Instinct Gold. Never got a chance to finish Majora's Mask either. I only had like 14 or 15 N64 games. :(

I did have a PS2 and GC as well, but I traded my PS2 to get a 360 and sold the GC at a pawn shop. The GC had some fantastic games. Windwaker and Eternal Darkness are probably my favorite games for the system. Metroid Prime was incredible as well.

When I was in school I was doing 4 moves a year sometimes.  I've had most of my collection since high school, so I've always had a lot of stuff to move.  I eventually gave up and just kept all my video games at my parents' house until I finished college.  :'(  Was not fun.  And now I'm basically just dreading whenever the next time is I'll have to move.

This is for sure not a moving friendly hobby. Over half the boxes from all the stuff I've accumulated in my adult life is video game related, and it was a huge hassle tearing down, packing, and rebuilding the display. But it makes me smile every time I glance to the left :D

The only saving grace is that the display gets cooler every time you rebuild it! I have these cool led backlit frosted glass shelves I wanna get to display consoles next time I move, so it's sort of exciting to dream about.

Looking for suggestions on Video Game pricing apps and apps that help you keep track of your collection and what you do/don't have. Any suggestions? I use an Excel spreadsheet at home for collection tracking but cannot update it on the go.

I use rfgeneration to keep track of my collection on my Samsung S5. Hoff has this app CLG that is great but it's a paid app.

You could always migrate your excel sheet to Google sheets so you could update it as you go.

So awesome. My brother has the N64, I have the other two. I should try and get it from him. I should also take some pics of my stuff.

Not sure if this has been asked: Favorite game you own for these systems. Game you'd love to own for these systems.

Can anyone answer?  ;D

Never was a big NES guy but the Mega Man series is my favorite series of all time and 3 is my personal favorite non-X game. I don't collect for the NES, but I'd be happy to take a Cheetahmen II off anyone's hands.

For SNES (greatest console ever made. EVER!) it's Yoshi's Island. ****, Yoshi's Island is in my top 5 of all time. Everything about that game is absolutely perfect... except the Poochy bonus stage, that **** can rot in hell. Right now Hagane: The Final Conflict is my #1 most sought after game for any system.

Although I had a 64 growing up I never liked it much because I always managed to buy the ****tiest games for it thinking they would be cool, but I do have very fond memories of 4-player Goldeneye and Majora's Mask. I am still on the lookout for another copy of Bangai-O that was stolen, and am dying to play Conker's Bad Fur Day, Paper Mario, and Banjo Tooi.

I'm answering too!  :P

NES: Bubble Bobble
SNES: Super Mario World
N64: Super Mario 64 (best game of all time IMO)

Not sure what I'd love to own.  I have most of the games I'd like.  :D

Anyone can answer for sure. Opening up more discussion I think can be good.

I probably should have answered myself as well.

NES: probably Metroid. I remember very fondly fighting through that to the end and how excited I was to make those end credits. Very tight second would be Castlevania.

SNES: I personally missed out on the SNES and N64 at the time. SNES days we went to Sega Genesis(also had Sega channel) and by the time N64 hit I was on PC. For SNES though I agree with Yoshi's Island.

Since I mentioned the Genesis I'm going to say Zombies Ate My Neighbors. So much fun and a LOT of levels to go through.

N64 I remember playing the hell out of Rush 2 Extreme Racing when I babysat my youngest brother and a couple of his friends. We had a lot of fun with that. Golden Eye was a big deal at anyone's house at the time though, that's for sure.

Saturn was so good. My brother had one and took it to a pawn shop or something for a really maddeningly cheap cash trade in. I think he got $5usd for the system and the games. I was so pissed when I found out.

I don't actually own some of these games on their original systems since I play them on the Wii U or the 3DS instead, but my favorites for each system would be:

NES: Kirby's Adventure
SNES: Super Metroid (The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a very close second)
N64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
And as a bonus ...
GC: Metroid Prime

Nope, I don't have the Japanese box (or the blue N64 either), so I guess you have me beat there :P
I thought about getting a boxed one, but if I got the Japanese box, then I would end up wanting the boxes for all of the other versions as well. And for some of those games (the Taiwanese/Hong Kong versions for example), it's hard enough to find the game itself, let alone the box too. I would end up losing my mind trying to find them all lol

So since you guys either have RGB setups or are interested in them I figured I'd ask about SCART switches.

Is there an affordable high-quality product available? The only thing I've seen is the $15 3 port one I found on eBay which looks like a Hama and the DIY one from the Shmup/ Assembler forums (I'm on a list to be on a list :\ ). Any better options out there?

AFA cables go everything I've seen looks like handmade stuff based on monoprice BNC cables available on eBay for a slight (affordable) premium.

From what I've read Console RGB to SCART -> SCART Switch -> SCART to BNC -> CRT is the way to go. I've just ordered a ton of various connectors to try and get this figured out. Loads of research still to do though.

Best way is a matrix switcher like these;
http://www.extron.co.uk/product/listbytype.aspx?subtype=139
http://www.kramerelectronics.co.uk/products/model.asp?pid=1869&sf=44&pname=VP-885

No loss of quality, all BNC connections though.
These things go for cheap on fleabay, the cabling will cost you more!

I honestly don't know that much because it's so confusing. I attempted to read through Fudoh's stuff on his website (http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/). But I didn't get it. When I went to the Louisville Arcade Expo I saw a BVM/PVM connected to like a red white  yellow cable. That's it. So I just wanted a BVM/PVM and do a simple connection and be done with it.

I haven't seen any devices in the US that support SCART.  Are you modding your consoles to use SCART?  I'm very noob in the world of console modding/upgrading in this sense, so I'd love some info on this.   :thumb:

RGB is the only way IMHO...
A lot of old consoles have good RGB without modding - megadrive, sfc, ps1, saturn etc... no forgetting JAMMA too ;)
Hooking up the *right* cables isn't too bad, there's loads of info out there on pinouts etc if you need to make up your own stuff.
Only consoles I've had to mod for RGB are PCE, n64 & sega mk3

I honestly don't know that much because it's so confusing. I attempted to read through Fudoh's stuff on his website (http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/). But I didn't get it. When I went to the Louisville Arcade Expo I saw a BVM/PVM connected to like a red white  yellow cable. That's it. So I just wanted a BVM/PVM and do a simple connection and be done with it.
Agreed I'd love some info on all of it. It's so overwhelming that I just am hunting for a smaller Sony Trinitron to play on.
I've been playing Final Fantasy 7 on my 14" S-video PVM over the last few days after work. It's much better than composite (yellow) but not quite as nice as RGB. The monitor itself was only $20 so I think it was totally worth it (out of the three I have it's the only one without RGB). You wouldn't really be doing yourself any favors by using composite (yellow RCA cable) video on nice monitor, it kind of defeats the purpose. The red and white cables are audio left and right which you shouldn't use with these monitors since they are mostly mono, I recommend a nice pair of studio monitors instead. (I'm using my cheap m-audios, thanks tj!)

If you want to keep it simple at first just use S-Video but eventually you'll get the itch and want all your consoles to look there best and start to invest in a full BNC-based RGB setup. ;)

Guess I mean S Video, not Yellow. Anywho, if I could score one for $14, I'd already be playing on one. unfortunately, it's $100-200+ here to get a PVM or BVM.

I also got a 14" BVM and a 20" PVM. Need to take a pic when I'm back home.

Got a PAL Snes (rgb) attached to them. :)

Sadly the pvm is a bit noisy and makes a high frequency noise. Some people even don't hear it, but I hear it and it drives me crazy.

Would love to have a 20" bvm or a 29" pvm....

Cool to see them getting in on retro games, but I can't imagine this being a better alternative to eBay, in terms of price.   :-\

A few new pickups today:

Alisia Dragoon is really one of my favorite Genesis titles of all-time. It plays like an adventure platformer with RPG elements. You have a set of familiars that follow you around and level up separately from you. The game gets brutally difficult but the graphics and music are great for a Genesis game.

Light(e)ning Force is the 4th game in the Thunderforce series. From a technological standpoint the game is absolutely incredible. I have never seen this many layers of paralax scrolling on ANY other 4th generation system, and that includes heavy hitters like the Neo Geo. There is some noticeable slowdown in places, but not near as much as you'd think by the amount of things going on. Plus the opening music is ****ing rad!

Peace Keepers is a side-scrolling beat-em-up which is pretty standard fare except that there are branching paths and multiple outcomes for each level. It's not as fun as say, Final Fight, but it's unique and getting quite difficult to find these days.

Tales of Phantasia. I can't say enough good things about this title. The game is hands down the most lush and gorgeous SNES game I have ever played. The graphics, animation, and voice acting (yep, on a SNES) are all quite good, and although I don't speak Japanese I can hear every syllable spoken clearly. This is my first Tales game ever (appropriate since it's the first) and so far I am very impressed. If I didn't know any better I would've guessed this to be a PS1 or Saturn game by the way ity looks, moves, and sounds. One of the best RPGs on the SNES, and it absolutely baffles me that it never made it to the US. This is a reproduction translated cart, which thus far works

Any mid-90s Trinitron. I figured start with that before a BVM/PVM.
I've seen some good ones for free, but every time I confirm my pick-up they'd say it was picked up for charity or they'd never respond.

The JVC we had as a kid had a magnet put on the screen and was recently tossed.

Ahh yeah, Trinitron is obviously good.  I got ripped off on a BVM last year (seller "didn't have anything to test the connection with", it was only $50 so I took it, turns out it's missing the RGB control board  ), and haven't searched around for a replacement yet.  :-/

You're not interested in getting it set up and dropping in a CRT after the fact?  Or getting a dumpy screen for now and upgrading later?

If I can get a BVM/PVM off Craigslist then I'd go for it! I figured a good CRT would be easier to get and would at least get me S-video. Once I mod my consoles and/or get the right cables, I'll get a better monitor for those with RGB.

SNES is downstairs hooked up to the SCART -> HDMI converter to test it out.  ;)

Don't worry, I've got every Nintendo console from NES to WiiU.   And most of their handhelds too...

Nice setup!  Drink some beer, play some games, relax ^-^

^-^  That's the plan!  :D  And thanks.  :)

Speaking of retro gaming setups I still haven't found a good SCART switch for sale.

It's a baby one.  I think 13".  I haven't tried hooking up RCA/S-video - think it's worth?  I think I'll need to pick up an adapter of some sort is why I'm asking (have honestly forgotten, I put the thing in the closet out of frustration).

Depends on the time of day. For the most part, it does a good enough job that I'm not bugged a lot by it. That said, I would still love to move it to a different room but the office is being used as storage space right now. Maybe this summer :)

modded with a region switch and scart RGB output for both the SG and the rau-30 unit.

no plans to get a CDČ  but it's nice to know it's there. About a week before the SuperGrafx arrived I found Splatterhouse at a junk shop for $1 amongst the CDs and tapes, easily one of the best finds of my entire life and weirdly timed too.
Nice obscure finds!
Hey, I have that same Indian soapstone chess set. You must be a real classy guy.

**** it.  Here it is.  Enjoy my poorly-lit and shoddily-edited photos.

There are a few in here that don't really show much, but help illustrate how the room is set up, so bear with it.

Hoffman, I had no idea you were such the connoisseur of vintage gaming decadence! The next time I'm in WI I'll need to stop by and take some of that off your hands play some video games.

Ha thank you, I don't get to play as much chess as I'd like to these days. Nice setup btw, a real healthy mix of systems and games.

I retired my short-lived chess career shortly after my 14-year-old nephew began beating me.
Thanks. I've been hoarding collecting games and all things game-related Pac-Man since my childhood. I still have most of it and have been adding to it since.

A slightly overpriced FPGA console.
But a great (best?) way to play 8-bit games on both modern and old setups.

Falling down the road of NES collecting. This is my temporary setup. I'll be modding the top loader soon with the Hi-Def NES mod and swapping out the CRT for an HD monitor.

Keyboards and retro vidya.: two of my favorite hobbies.
Just gotta add a bookcase filled with hardcovers (from Victorian novels to comic book omnibuses) and you've got me in a nutshell.

BVM-D are multiformat monitors, that one in the pic doesn''t have that written on the top right so is an earlier BVM-20 15khz only

Nice collection for sure. Seeing breakdowns of OG GC pads and the new ones, they are virtually identical to each other in terms of physical hardware and parts.
