It could go to the left of the "View Profile" button under the avatar or even to the left of the user name for greater visibility and reduced vertical space.

Because the line of text seemed cold and the stars are useful for quickly capturing meaning at a glance.  Also, as has been duly noted, there is a lot of text around the (now larger) avatars.

FYI, stars are part of the baseline forum package that simply hasn't been used until now.  They are common in other forums large and small.  But frankly, debate and discussion was expected.  That is why this subject has its own thread.

Ok, I can agree with that, the stars do add a nice color to an otherwise text-full area, is it possible to perhaps consolidate the stars and the title onto one line? It's quite the waste of vertical space to have Custom Title, Forum Role, Star, and Avatar. with the star taking up an entire line of less than 10px.

Just my thoughts on it.

Orange Star has a special meaning to be announced.

I want an elder star...does that make me a Mormon?

Also enjoying the irony of SmallFry being an elder.

I did not even think of that.  I was going for alliteration and thinking of Mandarins.

Can I get a turbo instead of start? :D

You HAVE a turbo.  In here, you just get a star.  And grief and abuse.  Because we love you.

My vendor forum aint doing much anyway, especially when I am going for my A Level exams in 5 months..... :'(

You can save the green star for me in 2014 ;)

EDIT: somehow I find illustrious a little too North Koreanish...... @ sifo

EDIT2: and I dont have a vendor forum, technically not a vendor?

I noticed that too, if they're in their subforum, it says Moderator instead of Vendor.

That is because (from the perspective of the forum software) they are Moderators of their forum.  Please note that they do NOT acquire a purple star in the process.

We are looking into helping the forum software be more coherent in this matter.

But, more clutter in the left column :( How about combining it with the online/offline icon by a user's name? Online could be star + twinkle, or something like that :D

And so it is done, oh Elevated One.

So we laugh at the Team Twerk stuff, which is fine because it's meant to be laughed at, but we reward spamming? Hm. I would venture that the Team Twerk giveaway has done more for the community than me spamming posts. I still maintain the opinion I posted from the first page that Stars segregate the community and encourages laziness in the GeekHack community.

I don't think they really segregate the community, but it is a nice way to reward people who've made GH their home for such a long time. I agree that the pure volume of posts doesn't really communicate what a forum member has contributed. I might have 4,000 posts (I don't) but if 95% of them are dirty limerick posts (they haven't been), then am I really worthy of a star, as opposed to, say, someone who designs a new keyboard, but only has 200 posts? I like the stars, don't get me wrong, but I would have preferred a badge system awarded by what someone has actually contributed. Developed a keyboard, organized a GB? Those should get badges! Or, make a 'Filthy Limerick Artist' badge.

Also, where's my soccer ball badge?

Welp, a black star. How fun.

It is optional, and could be removed or replaced silver, pink or cyan at your request.

I am not doing badges.

I agree with most of your post Krog. I just don't think the old-timers or people who have been here for a while need to be rewarded. I'm sure many of them have had a project or done SOMETHING that has kept their here and made their time worth it. I definitely don't need a little star to get some feels. I feel the same way with badges. I'd rather have my letter from my Secret Santa, Moose box drawing, and BunnyLake Miami cap versus some silly badge that says I soldered a board.

Edit: And people already think there's some elite cadre of GHers that get preferential treatment and all the goodies. Just look at the BunnyLake Clack giveaway thread. I think stars will further that feeling; hence, segregation.

I think stars for post count is pretty stupid in general. It's not obvious enough how many posts they have with the actual number sitting right there? I think it promotes spam...

I can't find the option to disable stars either..

may circlejerk continue
