Inspiration

The Great Wave off Kanagawa <神奈川沖浪裏>(c 1829-1833) by Katsushika Hokusai
is a woodblock print (Ukiyo-e) and is one of the most reproduced and recognisable images of Japanese artwork in history. World-renowned, it has had a profound influence on Western art culture, but particularly upon the French Impressionists which in-turn shaped the great wave of European Modernism in the 20th Century. Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night also clearly shows significant inspiration from it, with him even writing vividly to his brother Theo:
Hokusai’s "waves are claws, the boat is caught in them, you can feel it".
More
In fact, Hokusai's sophisticated uses of rich hues of blue to create this striking design, led to European artists to incorrectly deem the colour blue as idiosyncratically Japanese, and fuelled the "Japonism" craze at the time (the earliest weebs Japanophiles!). The blue in fact was actually European in origin, commonly known as Prussian Blue, and is the first modern synthetic pigment, spreading rapidly around the world, causing reciprocating ripples of creativity globally, from Paris to Japan.

There's many details to love, such as the intense dramatic tension of the gigantic wave about to break on top of the viewer unfolding in the foreground, to the contrast between the saturated swells and the white crest of foam with its claw-like tendrils. Despite its restrictive palette, it successfully captures a moment in time, portraying the constantly changing movement of the ocean and its vast power. Men in boats appear insignificant amongst the chaos of nature, which even envelops Japan's largest and sacred symbol, Mount Fuji (a focus of Hokusai's spirituality). This referential icon appears as a diminutive triangle in the distance, where it could be easily missed and mistaken for another ocean wave. This defied traditional Japanese compositions of perspective at the time, and Hokusai thus skillfully blends European structure, with Japanese motifs and techniques into a seamless work of enduring international appeal.

To us, the significant history behind this artwork and the pigment Prussian blue (berorin-ai; ベロリン藍) highlights the role of cultural exchange at the heart of creative discovery, and to continue to celebrate this spirit, we're using this iconic seascape as the theme for a keycap set design we think lots of people will also love too.

Design

Besides being a tribute to an ubiquitous artwork of significant cultural influence, we hope that our design is humbly evocative of the vast and infinite seas and sky. From a deep, muted navy hue that transitions to crispy ice-white, we wish to recall the endless beauty of crashing ocean waves, summer skies, and even crystalline glaciers. Timeless, enduring, and elegant, the blue of water is able to evoke many different emotions and scenes of nature.
During development I noticed that there are many keycap set designs that are Japanese themed, and/or Blue, and/or a Gradient pattern. Well you can forget about the rest, because this manages to cover all of those features in one go!

Q&A
More
※  When will this be available for purchase?
This will depend on our communication with vendors (regional storefronts responsible for handling purchases and shopping). We will aim to have a group-buy date period sometime in the second quarter of 2021.
For newbies, a groupbuy is the one month period, where stores collect pre-order purchases. Note it is typically months afterwards, depending on the manufacturer’s production line, for these keycaps to be made and shipped.

※  What is KAT?
↠ KAT profile is a sculpted keycap profile manufactured by Keyreative.
↠ Side comparison diagram to cherry (GMK), SA, and OEM profile courtesy of keycaps.info:

↠  It is made of PBT plastic; meaning less likelihood for shine over use compared to ABS
↠  Legends are dye sublimated
↠  It is compatible with Cherry MX style switches on most mechanical keyboards
↠ Here are photos of caps from other Keyreative sets that have been produced or are in development: KAT Eternal, KAT Eternal, , KAT Napoleonic, KAM 80s After Dark

※  Why so many kits?
It can appear overwhelming, but for the majority of users, a Core Alpha kit +  Modifier kit will cover 60/65%, +/- F-row kit to cover 75%/TKL, and Numpad to cover 100% layouts. If you’re in Europe, you might prefer your regional alphas instead.
This specific manufacturer's Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) structure however permits us to support extra compatibility for those who use less popular keyboard forms. As long as the overarching goal of the minimum number of keycap “units'' sold for production is met, all kits will be made.
This approach should be applauded; giving those who enjoy using less popular layouts an opportunity to purchase a set for their favoured form. It also embraces the customizability spirit of this hobby, offering people their pick of legends for alphas and modifiers.
However, a high number of kits is also logistically more challenging for vendors, and is time-consuming from the designers perspective. We'll do our best to cater, but there is a limit to what we can or are allowed to do.
It's been particularly tricky ensuring the gradient applies to non-standard layouts (like 40s/orthos/colemak/ergo), so let us know if we've made any mistakes given our unfamiliarity with those exotic form factors.

※  What colours of blue did you pick?
We are using shades of blue based on the Pantone GP1601A Coated and Uncoated Formula Guide, and selected them based on how well they transitioned with each other.
In regards to the specific colour codes, until group buy, only the manufacturer (for samples), and artisan/cable collaborators will be privy to that information. There are photos of the pantone above though if you wanted to see what it looks like on paper via camera phone.
During the IC period we will continue to try and improve renders to better represent the exact colours better, but note that due to render software lighting, and individual monitor differences, there will be variations.

※  Do you consider the colours/font/icons/kits/novelties final?
Not at all, we are still very open to suggestions and improvement, especially if there is significant consensus and/or expertise opinion regarding feasible adjustments, such as kitting.

※ Is the kanji you are using for the Escape key correct?
From asking around: 中止(stop)、終了(finish; complete) and 退出(exit; leave; withdraw), were informed as reasonable kanji-based options. Keycap sets Kuro Shiro and SimpleJA in fact use 終了, however we wanted to focus on the beauty of a single kanji character if possible.
Thus we went with "終" which has been used in old films, where it is displayed on the screen at the end, in lieu of the French "fin". If you are a native Japanese speaker, please leave a message on any other terminology errors or suggestions. Thanks to Kidviddy for aiding with translations.

Fun Facts
More
※ The term Manga was created by the artist Hokusai
※ Arising from the Edo period, the Great Wave art may be Hokusai’s most famous work, but he didn’t produce the piece until 70 years old, after creating more than 30,000 works of art.
※ The wave print was part of a 36-piece series known as Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.
※ Despite its popularity, the series was not considered great art by Japanese art historians of the time. They viewed uikyo-e as a form of commercial printing – not fine art, beneath consideration for artistic merit. But today, original woodblock prints are beloved by museums and galleries around the world
※ Hokusai was influenced by Dutch artist's techniques of vanishing point perspective, evidenced by the illusion of depth, and a low horizon line; abandoning traditional Japanese isometric view, where motifs are scaled according to importance.
※ There are echoes of golden ratio throughout the artwork, where the fractal nature of breaking wave mirrors the mathematical beauty of nature itself.
※ Prussian blue is the traditional "blue" in both blueprints and aizuri-e (藍摺り絵) Japanese woodblock prints. It was imported from China and the Netherlands (the only countries Japan traded with in the 1830s).
※ The colour "Berlin Blue" found its way to the printmaking industry in Osaka where it was trafficked as “bero”, where its vivid hue, tonal range and foreignness saw it explode in popularity just as it had in Europe.
※ Before Prussian blue reached Japan, printmakers used the blue dyes indigo and dayflower blue, which are much less vibrant.
※ This compound is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system. It is used as an antidote for certain kinds of heavy metal poisoning
※ Here is what a woodblock print looks like:

Thanks for all the positive responses, and to those who filling out the feedback form!

Given how well it's polling, the original artwork will feature as a deskmat.

A traditional seigaha pattern deskmat (as non-original as it is) is also highly likely to feature. We just weren't sure if there'd be any demand for these designs given GMK Bento's deskmats also are seigaha wave patterns.

Note that novelties are an evolving design space. We understand some of them might not appeal to you all, but we've left different designs that might speak to different people's preferences.
Some of the elements, like the birds, the octopus, and the finely detailed wave are in fact all direct references to other woodblock prints by Hokusai.
Regarding the origami crane folding novelties; I like the final completed cranes, but the steps/instructions will possibly be culled to make way for more thematically relevant wave element designs.

Renders are displaying a slightly saturated blue compared to the actual blue pantone we've picked in real life, so we're going to revisit tweaking it better. To my eyes, the dark blue is a bit less saturated and a touch darker, thus a bit more faithful to the artwork. It is slightly better represented by an older render (https://i.imgur.com/kGeGQ1N.jpg) but we haven't yet nailed the lighting quite down yet. Renders and monitors displaying colours don't always match what coloured plastic actually looks like in your hand. We will get photos of samples to better show the blues in the end.

Would love to see a non-gradient kit if any, but otherwise, great job on the presentation.

I hate the deskmats ...Hopefully they garner a lot of interests!
I don't normally like a single carp image on a deskmat, but maybe it will look good if you combine the koi into the Ryujin? Related to the Koi that transform into the dragon myth in Chinese/Japanese culture if I remembered correctly.

Anyways, Good luck with IC!

I'm very happy today to see such an artwork moving forward.

This is a shut up and take my money moment. Because I want five of thos deskmats

Also, I said this on the form, but is a bit strage that some of the ISO sets get the tall return and others not. If I go for the Spanish set i need to get the UK in order to get the return.
Not a bit issue for me as I also would get the novelties. But it would make sense that all the ISO kits get their return.

Thanks for the support!
Thanks for pointing out that inconsistency. We definitely intended to include ISO enter key and left shift key with all the language kits, but we somehow forgot for German and Spanish kits (we added it but the file crashed and we forgot to re-add before rendering again). They will definitely be included!
----
Also for Colemak kit, during the transition from kitting diagrams to render files, we also noted we forgot to add the extra R3 keys of B (in 2nd lightest blue), and ' " (in white). These will be rectified on next minor update too.
----
Given feedback, we will be adding a few more 1u keys to the Kana sublegend kits too to account for Iso compatibility too

I feel like the novelties are a bit inconsistent in terms of visual style, overall though a very tempting set with a nice variety of kits.
Looking forward to getting some of these deskmats too!

if you do japanese mods for the normies will ortho/40s get the same benefit? pls, j 40s mods.
also please include duplicates of all r4 and r5 novelties on any of r1 r2 or r3 for 40s users. thanks, they look amazing so far btw.

numpad Soroban is a big yes <3 assuming i can dodge latin on everything else as well...

fave deskmat is probably Ōnami. not that i dont like the others, its just Ōnami is so clean and balanced. hoping for a 700x300 option, its so hard to find good deskmats which are smaller than 900x400...

yahyah dw i filled out the ic form. some of the comments here are duplicated there, just commenting to see if other people are vibing what im vibing

Very excited to see this set come to fruition after what I know has been a long and thorough period of design and iteration!

A couple of thoughts:

  • The JIS kitting looks good! (But then, I would say that  ;)). I posted it on the “Self-Made Keyboards in Japan” Discord and they noticed one issue with it: the 6 and 7 keys are the wrong colours for the gradient (compare with the Latin kit, where they are the lighter blue colour). Thanks to clomie for pointing this out!
  • I like the separate JIS mods kit, and I think offering it as an independent kit is a good move. However, I notice that many of the keys in this kit (無変換, 変換) are also present in the Japanese text mods kit, where they take the place of various keys such as Alt and the keys that are marked “Great” and “Wave” in the English text mods kit.  I can kind of see the reasoning behind this, since it saves having to think of a translation for these extra keys, and it allows users of the Japanese text mods kit to get access to these keys without having to get a separate JIS mods kit… but on the other hand, that separate kit exists, and for those users who actually intend to use the 無変換 and 変換 keys for their intended purpose, they will feel the absence of the alt key it replaces.  And I’m really not sure what the Windows logo is doing in this kit. Have you considered keeping 無変換 etc. in their own kit, and using the following replacement legends in the Japanese text mods kit:
    • 無変換 -> オルト (incidentally, I have always thought this katakana rendering looked odd and that アルト would be more natural, but I just looked it up and オルト does seem to be the accepted form, so I take back any dispersions I may have cast about it before)
    • 変換 -> 拡張機能 (“extended functionality”). This is useful as a Function key, and the legend features in some other sets such as ModernJA
    • Windows logo -> メタ. I thought maybe システム but I can see you might have avoided that because it’s a bit long to fit on a 1U. メタ, as in the “Meta” key, basically fits and it’s only two characters!

All in all, great progress, and good work on the thorough IC! Looking forward to following this set as it progresses.

EDIT: A little more detail on my comment about the アルト/オルト orthography for "Alt". The Japanese Wikipedia article on this key gives quite a good summary. It looks as if my initial suspicion -- that オルト is closer to the American pronunciation and アルト is closer to my native English pronunciation -- was more or less correct ("イギリス英語における発音をカタカナで書くと「アルトキー」となる"). The Oxford dictionary lists the pronunciation as /ˈɔːlt/ (closer to オルト), while Cambridge lists it as /ˈælt/ (closer to アルト), while as far as Japanese dictionaries go some list only オルト while others list both オルト and アルト as alternatives.

In conclusion: you could use either, but オルト does seem to be the slightly more common form in Japan, from what I can tell from my brief review this evening.

SECOND EDIT: I got another piece of feedback from the Japanese Discord which I'm adding here to avoid cluttering up the thread with lots of posts.  User otahinosame asks: "Is the vertical alignment of the 0 key not matching the other numbers intentional?"

Although I can see how, taken in isolation, it's tempting to centre-align the 0 legend because there is no punctuation above it, most Japanese keyboards align it with the other numbers and leave the space above blank. I've never really thought about it, but it makes sense: if you're typing in numbers, it's a bit jarring that one of the number legends is out of alignment with all the others.  Anyway, something to think about!

Happy Holidays to everyone! Thanks to all those who have filled out feedback and given suggestions and corrections!

Thanks Kidviddy for all your help with the JIS kitting during this set's development!
Thanks to you and other members from the Japanese Disord for pointing out errors and suggesting alternative terms.  I agree with all of the suggestions.
I was thinking the Windows logo might be a bit jarring, and メタ looks like a much better alternative. Yes you're correct that we're trying to avoid cramming the keys with too many characters/legends if possible.

- JIS Latin Alphas: We will correct the error with the colours of 6 and 7. And we will adjust the alignment of 0 to match the other digits.
- Japanese Text Mods: We will change: (Alt) 無変換 -> オルト ; 変換 -> 拡張機能 * ;  Windows logo -> メタ

*re: 変換 -> 拡張機能 (“extended functionality”) is there an alternative shorter terminology we could utilise? Also any alternative text suggestions that match the theme of the keyset more is always appreciated!

As mentioned above:
In terms of other pending kit changes;
- Novelties: we will be adding more bot row modifiers in light blue; the seigaha wave novelty will have more colour and size alternatives; only the final origami crane novelties will be retained, the steps will be culled; awkwardly the wave circle logo novelty is actually inverse of what was intended (the top of the wave should be white)

- German and Spanish kits: We will be adding Iso Enter and Left Shift keys to (we forgot)
- Colemak+ : We forgot to add the R3 B in light blue to support Colemak DHm (thanks to Kekboii for pointing this out). We also forgot to add R3 ' key to support Colemak DHm ANSI wide variation

I feel like the novelties are a bit inconsistent in terms of visual style, overall though a very tempting set with a nice variety of kits.
Looking forward to getting some of these deskmats too!
Thanks for the feedback. We do have a variety of novelties, and there is a bit variation as some are direct references to other ukiyo-e artworks that Hokusai also drew. We do not expect everyone to use every single novelty, so we tried to cater to different crowds. Some will prefer the subtler references, and others will prefer the louder ones (i.e. dragons). We will keep looking at seeing how to improve them.

Japanese text mods for 40/orthos is an interesting idea. I'm quite reluctant to add any further kits at this stage without good reason. If there is a large group that wishes to replace the Latin text mods for ortho/40s, with Japnese text mods then I'll have to hear and consider it.

okay we will try to duplicate some top row novelties to the bottom for 40s users. In case we can't duplicate all due to kit bloat, which are your top 2-3?
I'm also planning to dodge latin on everything too XD. It's why F-row and numpad kanji are being offered.
Onami is the most popular, and frustratingly the quickest to design haha. I wanted a minimal deskmat to balance the other crazy designs, and initially it was just the emblem. Adding the artwork's title cartouche when I revisited it again 2 months later ended up bringing balance to the force. In regards to 700mm x 300mm deskmat sizes, I'll have to speak to vendors and other designers that have offered it as an option to see if it's feasible. I do feel for those with limited desk sizes who want a smaller size deskmat.

Gib deskmats pls

Love the set and really appreciate you offering the Colemak kit. But why the 7 and = sign in it?

Edit: I think I see now. It’s to support ISO wide. https://colemakmods.github.io/mod-dh/keyboards.html. But shouldn’t the 7 be the dual legend seven to match the other numbers?

You are correct on both accounts. The iso and wide variations necessitated extra keys due to the gradient unfortunately.
Thanks for pointing out that mistake with the sizes of 7 and =, we will correct those legends!

yeah fair, np. even icon orth mods i think will be fine

it looks pretty good already i just though in case you end up changing the novelties kit at all it would be nice if there it didn't make you feel like you weren't getting much value unless you had a 60%+ board :P
i really like bow octopus, it would be a nice spacebar/bottom row (i know its kinda covered with the wob octopus, i just really like the bow one)
r1 origami would also be nice

I'm also planning to dodge latin on everything too XD. It's why F-row and numpad kanji are being offered.

yeah nice, really good to hear, seen some weird gb where people wanted j alphas and latin mods ??? even on a normie set i think its weird wanting latin mods over icon mods but i guess thats just my #preference lol

ahah yeah it do be like that somtimes, i think everybody loves minimal because it can pair well with a greater range of setups.
thanks bro, i know at the end of the day it comes down to numbers. i have only anecdotally heard of a few people being interested in the smaller deskmats so i wouldn't be surprised if most people just want a BIG one. if it doesn't work out it wouldn't be the first time ive been told my interests are too niche...

i like the great wave as well, and kind of like the great koi but i would be interested to see how it could look with "translucent"/semi transparent spots instead of completely blacked out (if that makes sense). idk at the end of the day i probably can only afford to get one mat anyway :P and at the moment its going to be onami

Not the OP, but although it’s common to have ESC or TAB where CAPS normally is, a lot of folks map that to something else. Personally I have it mapped to DEL on tap, CTRL on hold. But you have a CODE there so I personally wasn’t going to ask for it. CTRL is probably 3rd behind TAB and ESC though.
Ortho. Always.

My bad for forgetting to mention it'd be for the Latin/icon ortholinear/40 kits; 40% and and ortholinear layouts have been getting popular and Kat/Kam sets tend to have reliable compatability, which is why I asked for the one "missing" key. That caps lock position is actually quite valuable for reachibility so people put backspace or ctrl there, maybe add a 1u R2 backspace?  Personally I think it makes sense only to use Latin mods with pure Latin alphas, and the key that I believe to be "Code" in the icon set looks like it could be either Tab or Enter, so I wouldn't use it as Ctrl as psxndc suggested. In the Latin ortho mod kit I'd add another light blue r1 key as it might look weird to have either a single blank one or 2 ctrls on the left side; it might look nice if you were able to mirror the bottom row of the Latin kit like you can with the Icons kit. Can you do a render for the ortho kit? I wonder how the bottom left would look considering Z and X are a lighter blue while the left row is dark blue. I've taken a closer read of your inspiration and proposition for this set and I love your passion for the classic print. I think patterns Seigaiha and even one called "Nami Chidori" are appropriate for new deskmats, though this may be too much. My final though even more unreasonable request is for another blank white r1 key, making it the 4th in the ortho mod kit. I noticed the lack of a pair of multipurpose/"abstract" keys in the bottom row to be used in the space bar/layers area, and these keys tend to be comprised of blanks or random icons. Adding another blank white key and a pair of multipurpose keys may greatly help users with a grid and/or split layout, which split 40/50s tend to be. Sorry for the long reply, I had initially asked only for a single key to be added to the ortholinear sets and just look at how this has turned out. I'm on my phone too lol

On the Colemak kit, I see that you’ve updated the 7 and + keys to new dual legends (awesome, thank you!), but I believe the #, ], and \ keys need to be updated too. They are the same keys as on a QWERTY layout, they’ve just been moved.

That means ] needs } and \ needs |.

I must confess I don’t know what the # key is doubled up with; ~ maybe for ISO? - I’m not a wide mod or ISO person.

I wish I could @dvorcol. They’d know.
