Came just in time since I have a LAN tomorrow

I still use the boxes my keyboards came in, but have thought about alternatives. I wish I had a case like that which fits a tenkeyless keyboard so perfectly. I will keep looking for good alternatives. In the meantime, the box it is.

Assembled the acrylic Alps case, added a mix of Focus and Toshiba keycaps to the board.  Also soldered on a custom PS2 cable (thanks, Nubbinator!) instead of the stock 5-pin DIN cable.

I used black aluminum connectors instead of the stainless steel, they are a little smaller in diameter, which made assembling the case a lot easier the second time around.

That is gorgeous. Nice work!

Thanks!  I still need to work up a solution to raise the rear of the case, perhaps some half-round acrylic bar stock.  A few more tweaks, but it's pretty close to what I imagined.

That's a nice clean build, great job. I foresee fingerprints in your future though.

This is awesome! The blank-key options for Topre are few indeed, so it's usually hard to do anything interesting.

I like it! I would've personally preferred Yellow but that still looks really good. Try a Red blank esc key on that!

Oh I have something even better on the way for the esc key. Hint: it starts with a click and ends in a clack ;)

Not bad - interesting pattern of keycaps too, there was a discussion about that recently.  THis one shows the extreme case, and looks very good!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Would really love to hear what those zinc keys sound like and compare them to the caps on the numberpad. If you have a chance, please post a video.

Made a post in another thread:

Nice! But I'm worried they wouldn't feel so good on blues bc it would absorb a lot of the tactility... I would think they would ideally feel best on linear switches. How's it feel on blues??

I actually am debating with myself if I like them more than regular key caps. The tactility is somewhat dampened because of the weight of the key, but the added weight feels good and makes the typing a bit more effortless. The sound is also quite interesting and fun; gone is the higher pitched click, and it is replaced with a more muffled click, followed by the thud of the zinc cap hitting the Das' metal plate.

Normal sound of the default Das keys: Listen (probably easier to right click and save as)

Me typing on the zinc keys: Listen (probably easier to right click and save as)

You can hear the space bar during the zinc typing as a bit of a reference for immediate comparison between the sounds.

Either way though, these are super fun to type on.

Lol. I re-did one of the keys and had it drying in the garage, but the box it was drying on was moved and the key is in the abyss that is the garage. Next day I'm off, I need to go hunt it down.

That or just wait for my blank white PBTs to arrive.

That looks very nice!  And I like the synergy; light case layers that look like metal!

How much thickness does the vinyl add to the overall case thickness?  Do your stock fasteners still work?

it does add thickness but the fasteners still fit on, it looks fantastic - im gonna take better pictures later on and post in the ergodox pictures thread :) The ironic thing is that i have the round 1 ergodox aluminum case on my 2nd ergodox but its so crap quality that this fake metal actually looks better.

potato picture but i put brushed titanium textured vinyl wrap to my acrylic ergodox, replacing the carbon fiber which looked tacky. picture doesn't do this justice it looks amazing. takes awhile to sit there with an xacto knife and cut everything out.

Took the SkiData keyboard into the office today (I do love those MX Whites!  Thanks, IvanIvanovich!).  My spouse noticed it while I was packing it up; "Oh, you've got a Barbie keyboard!  How pretty!"

When she saw the look on my face, she amended it; "Oh, it's more like Candyland, now that I think of it."

It's a SlickSteel Pro, in the A4 size.  No longer sold, the company that used to make them just does kitchen tiles now.

I'm using it at the office because my cubicle desk has a seam right where I like to use the mouse.  The steel mouse mat (with cork backing) bridges the gap nicely.

Looks like they're selling them again, good catch!  Last time I'd checked, the message on their home page said they'd been discontinued.

It's a pretty nice mouse mat, very slick - as the brand name implies - and quite heavy.  I'd actually been using it as a soldering area, the stains and burn marks just make it look battle-worn.   ;D

This:

Yoga Mat underneath PCB, I did some clean up on the straightness of the edges before closes everything up. I now know why a custom case for a WASD V1 would be different then most keyboards :) Also MX Blues sound amazing after doing this. Virtually no bottom out noise and all the glory of the click :)

That's really sick. I was thinking of doing that to my Filco. How long did it take to do?

not that long, 3 screws to open case, remove pcb, use pcb to measure yoba mat deminsions, lay in case, mark anything that needs to come through poke hole throw, trim where necessary, Took me about 20 minutes.

thanks guys.

Yup, that's how long it too me as well. Very easy.

THAT'S AWESOME. Where did you get the pad/screen printing done?

Assembled the acrylic Alps case, added a mix of Focus and Toshiba keycaps to the board.  Also soldered on a custom PS2 cable (thanks, Nubbinator!) instead of the stock 5-pin DIN cable.

I used black aluminum connectors instead of the stainless steel, they are a little smaller in diameter, which made assembling the case a lot easier the second time around.

That Focus project came out SO good Greystroke. Congrats. And your Miami Skidata board is awesome.
