That's such a preposterous idea! Why would you use the key caps you bought? :P

Um, no. You can't use them or they will spoil. You just keep them to bring out for photos once in a while. If I had a box or jars, that's where mine would stay. I have baggies in a bin.

She's taken care of that too :) :anniversary present.

like i said she fuels it... and im ok with that

Nice. :)

I personally would use a CC as an ESC key, but if I had a sizable collection I would keep them out of harms and frame those puppies. It is better than keeping them in a drawer.  I would gather a lot people take pictures of their hard to obtain keycaps on their boards and then stow them away for safe keeping.

Mason jars here.  I even go through the whole jarring process where I seal the lids in hot water.

i tried to get use to the novelty caps mounted on the filco/hhkb etc.., couldn't get use to it.
to much of a sucker for that "oem" look - i know right, im lame what am i collecting them for  -
i had the candy corn cc on the hhkb [esc] button for a couple days but i couldn't get use to the look
i really liked the look of the plain ol' standard esc better
but still love looking at and collecting ekycaps
im sure im the only one on geekhack like this :-[

I have lots of novelty caps, but none are on my keyboards. I'm with you guys on the clean aesthetic. And since I don't want my full keycap sets to get worn or shiny or anything, I have duplicates for use on my keyboards. Cherry white on black DS, Cherry black on beige DS, CCnG, SP white on red modifiers, etc.

This is kinda what I thought people would do with their custmo keycaps, especially the rare ones.  Imagine my surprise when I discovered that most people just use them on keyboards!

This would be a cool way of storing the delicate ones, like Niqmods and girldc caps.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That's exactly what I do. But my second keyboard is borderline unicorn vomit.

I actually finished assembling it the other day, but I am always behind on pictures and stuff. I stole the rubber antiskid pads from a spare Pure case that I am using as a dust cover.

Yes that's a squirrel. Bite me if you don't like squirrels.
[white balance is kinda off, but too lazy to fix. Green is more vibrant, and the caps are dark grey]

Yep. MKC's curve is on the bottom sides, so it wouldn't be visible anyways.

Yes, he got the pre-production Vortex case. :D
I am not sure what it is. I want to get my hands on a gun metal one, but... can't fool me twice. I ain't buying until some things are fixed. Standoffs and better finishing touches. I'll see if the distributor will get a sample on the next batch I can play with before throwing money at Vortex again. Really, I hope you guys don't buy until I can do that. It would have saved some disappointments...

I don't think that the vortex case are bad, I think the quality is is roughly the same as any other aluminium case when the thing is assembled.

So when you guys are calling this piece of metal trash, you don't realise that it still holds 10x the quality of a plastic case.

I know that some people have gotten ****ty examples, but that happens with all products.

Only people who didn't buy one in that thread are calling them trash. You know the usual Vortex bashers who own no Vortex boards (I own 9).
However, you can't deny Vortex screwed the pooch again with the missing feet. The dings and surface imperfections could be improved with better handling of the finished products. Minor changes could make it a much better product. Devil's in the detail. It is what separate great products from good ones. You can't help but feel underwhelmed when it comes out of the box with dings and marks on them. I am not a whiner that's whining just to whine. I already sent back several suggestions. Let's see if next batch will be better.

Finally got around to transplanting a new PCB into Green Machines's case.
At the same time modded all the switches to ErgoClears

And to finish it off, added my dolch keycaps

I'm liking the ErgoClears so far, so this will be my daily driver for a while  :D

That's pretty cool, and actually something I'd thought of a week or two ago (using kydex).  Does it flex and fold flat when the keyboard is in it, even a little?  Or in other words, how well will it retain that shape and stand up to abuse?

Also, from the little I know of kydex seeing people make gun holsters out of it, I was wondering, is it flexible enough to where you could make something in the style of a keyboard roof / cover with the key indentations?

Just depends on what thickness of kydex. I only use 0.060" ... one of the thinner stocks... It's not strong enough for me to step on without damage... but it's PRETTY strong.

I made one of these with the key indentations... but it doesn't allow you to change caps, and doesn't look as clean. Also, it pushes the keys down while molding.

I also have to put a layer or 2 of foil while molding. I don't trust 300 degree plastic on the keyboard. =)

Quite literally a rainy day project
Oh, and my 2nd attempt @ switch surgery. Much faster this time. Used PTFE grease, but figured out that less is more on the stems... A thin film seems best.

10476-1
10478-2
10480-3
10482-4
10484-5
10486-6
10488-7

Cleaned up a thrift store M0116 and swapped out the boring oranges for something sleek and silent.
went with parts from:
- AEKII: Dampened cream stems
- old terminal keyboard: light springs from linear green alps

Results are pretty phenomenal. A tad heavier than the Red MX, with almost no noise whatsoever. Love it.

I want to dye/paint the case/keys in pure prussian blue... Yeah, that's the stuff.

Results are pretty phenomenal. A tad heavier than the Red MX, with almost no noise whatsoever. Love it.

That's a fantastic job! I got an AEKII clone through a freelance Mac technician that I'm about to mod. I'll have to add green ALPS to the list and see how I like their springs. What was the name of the terminal board? Also, does the PTFE grease go on the slider or the spring itself?

In the first pic of my op, i was testing differences in friction and spring resistance and such. All in all, there was scant differences between the resistance of the 4. In the end, I chose the green springs because they had more coils and were gold-ish in color (SCIENCE!).

The next test involved the two dampened varieties (white and cream), setting and re-setting them, trying to find differences in friction. The white dampened stems/housings were definitely smoother, but I went with the creams because I have an abundance of them-- keeping it safe i guess.

Regarding the alps cm greens, they came from a texas instruments or zenith monstrosity from way back when (don't remember).

Finally, I applied as little PTFE as possible on the slider. I realized that I could do this using my fingers better than any other tool... Just rubbed a droplet of the grease over my fingertips. Then I just installed the sliders, rubbing each slider between my fingers before installing it in the housing. This left just the tiniest film of grease, more like a residue, which is what i was going for. Oh, and yeah, I don't grease the whole spring, but I use a tad bit to hold the spring in place (some use a magnet instead).

I've been typing on it all evening. Job well spent, it's way better than a new M0116 if you ask me.

Can someone tell me what keycaps these are? I've seen them a few times and they're awesome. The grey ones with the large centered white text.

The pic is from nntnam from earlier in this thread.

The grey ones are from GB R1, not 7bit.

They were made twice, the R1 GB had modifiers that were normal and said control, alt whereas the R3 GB's modifiers said meta, ultra, super instead, as demik mentioned.
