Previous version of these thick O-rings (red ones) were covering up some of the backlight LEDs.

As you can see, clear O-rings are better for backlight keycaps since light will shine through the O-ring.

It has a very small key travel reduction, so you may or may not notice it. It dampens the noise pretty well, and eliminates almost all of the “shock” you feel when the key hits the bottom. This one is my personal favorite, but I know it’s not for everyone. It’s the max thickness you can have in an O-ring. It bottoms out just after the key’s registration point. This simulates scissor switches on laptops or thin membrane keyboard, but still retains the “mechanical” feel from MX switches. || source : WhiteFireDragon’s GB

GON NS NerD TKL - SOLD

More

As you may or may not know, the waiting game for any korean custom keyboard is tough on the wallet and the nerves but from my experience, it's worth every penny and sweat !

> So why am I looking to sell this wonderful keyboard ?

Simply because I have no use for it right now.

- The board itself looks quite stunning.
- The switches are gorgeously smooth.
- LED backlighting is programmable and easily customized.

I can't justify having this keyboard preciously stowed away in a drawer any longer.

----

~ TL;DR summary

Soldering job & assembly :
All SMD components were soldered by GON.
His attention to detail is simply incredible and I tried to complete the build with the same dedication.

Condition :
It is in flawless shape except for one tiny scratch on the top left corner of the polycarbonate layer and another tiny scratch on one of the feet.
They are highlighted in the photos.
Both scratches were there when I received the housing (unassembled) from South Korea.

Used this keyboard for less than a month as a daily driver.

Since nothing about your rings are known, I'm not sure anyone here has the ability to compare. What hardness are they? What thickness?

You are in a better position to compare than LPWL.

I ... am not in a position to buy this month. But I would like to hear what shipping to the states ends up being when someone gets their order to them, as October is likely to see me buying into this.

It should be around 5-6 days to the USA. For example, it took 4 days for delivery in Canada.

EDIT : I can give you some numbers, now that Round 1 is closed :
  • Australia : 10 days.
  • USA : between 8 and 10 days.
  • Canada : between 7 and 8 days.
  • Europe : between 2 and 4 days.

Can you take a picture of your rings together with a blue one from the WASDkeyboards - a side view, to compare their thicknesses visually. Also: if you have those blue ones can you post a comparison of their specs? Many people are familiar with those and are willing to compare. Be proactive in a nice way and you may sell a few sets.

TIL that Paypal fees are not the same for receiving payments from buyers inside and outside EEA (European Economic Area).

3,4% vs 3,9%

Oh BTW is it possible to organise some proxies to minimize shipping?

Sure, no problem if you can find someone who is okay to proxy.

I will place an order sometime during the next week for one of each 90pcs.

According to amazon.com WASD blue rings are made of "EPDM rubber, resistant to cracking and tearing".
http://www.amazon.com/Cherry-Rubber-O-Ring-Switch-Dampeners/dp/B00AZQ2OF8
My personal experience with these particular rings supports this claim.
Here is a link to Wikipedia on this material: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPDM_rubber
Now, your rings are made of silicone and my concern is that they could be less resistant to "cracking and tearing", but this may became apparent after several months of use.

  • Is EPDM rubber more resistant to wearing and tearing than Silicone rubber ?
    - Yes.
  • Should you worry before slamming your keys with my O-rings on board ?
    - No, you should not.

I don't have any WASD blue o-rings so I can't compare. I asked swill to help us on this question and he confirmed his intention to do it - So let us wait before issuing an opinion in favour of one particular model in this (very) subjective area.

I've been using my "slim" and "fat" O-rings since last June and they still look perfect. KeyboardCo is also selling some O-rings made of silicone (the "slim" ones) and so far I've never heard any complaint.

Maybe I should try to run a torture test to check how well they are performing, this could be fun :p

Would you recommend the slim or fat o-rings for a Filco TKL Browns with original Cherry Doubleshots? I really would like to reduce the noise, because I bottom-out when I type and play video games.

I'm using both O-rings with my CODE keyboard (OEM profile - stock keycaps) but my guess is "Fat" O-rings won't work well with Cherry profile keycaps.

Here is my layout :

But if you wish to try it by yourself, I can add some extras to your order (for free).

Awesome! I just paid the invoice for a bag of slim o-rings. I would greatly appreciate having a few fat ones to try too. I like the idea of mixing them like yours. My moogle kit doesn't use the cherry profile, so maybe fats would be good then? I have a R3 moogle kit that uses SP profile.

Thank you !

I've added some "fat" ones to your order. I'll ship it tomorrow morning  ;)

I don't have any SP keycaps right now but from what I've seen (here - source : ebay.de)  R3 Moogle kit does not have any crossbars inside.

So here is my thought :

[...]

When you are saying : "SP's DCS profile do not even have any struts so they don't work with O-rings".

Do you mean that SP keycaps do not have any crossbar :

Show Image

If so, why a big O-ring would not do the same job than a thinner O-ring + crossbar ?

You should be able to answer this question soon - for free (!)

Thanks, Lpwl! I'll report my findings when I get the chance. I get the feeling that the fat rings would do just fine to compensate for the lack of a crossbar on the SP DCS underside.

My O-rings arrived today! Thanks so much! The thick orings are really nice :)) and are really silent. Typing on reds right now and the shortened travel distance is actually bliss ;D also tested the thinner ones which IMO don't feel as nice on reds. But they're easier going if you're uncomfortable with super short travel distances.

Got mine today!! Thank you Lpwl for doing this. It's been two years since I was first interested in o-rings and your research and service helped me pull the trigger to get them. I'm currently installing them right now, but you were right in recommending the slim o-rings for the Cherry keys. The fat rings prevent the keys from pushing down flat, and they reduce the travel distance too much for my taste. I'll add more later after I get acquainted to the change, but so far I really like how much noise they reduce and the travel distance reduction is just about right. Thanks again!

Couple of quesitons, guys:

1) Did anyone tried using fat o-rings with Cherry profile keycaps? I wounder if they'll actually fit;
2) Will fat o-rings interfere with LEDs? Anyone tried it on backlit boards?

Question to Lpwl, are there any plans for future buys? As an suggestion - maybe do it in clear rubber next time and EPDM instead of silicone, if you could source it ofc/

Fat rings will fit but they will feel like they reduce the travel distance A LOT. some people (like me) don't mind it, others hate it. In regards to LEDs, they will interfere with your keycaps and also may alter the colour of the light slightly so that should be taken into account whether you want these or not. Also Lpwl is trying to source clear O-rings but I haven't been on in a week or so and I'm not too updated on the status of that.  ;D

1) Just my guess but "fat" O-rings + cherry profile keycaps is not a good idea !

2) Yes, you will lose some backlighting but it's not really "that bad" !

Take a look at my CODE keyboard /w "fat" O-rings :

.... and yes, I'll be back offering O-rings here in November !

Soft

Um, I'm not sure about buying the o-rings since I use different keycap profiles on the same board, but that transparent keycap has me intrigued. May I know where you bought them and for how much?

That's it, these keycaps came with my QWERkeys MX switch testing kit.

- Sad news : Their store is closed.
- Good news : QWERTim may still have some kits available at £20 in Classifieds.

FYI mine cost me $30.

thanks LPWL!!!

I took these as well and figured i may as well share them, i really like these o-rings!

Size difference

Height difference

After looking at my photo's i took a closer look and realized that there's a quality difference as well because the rings that i got from a G710+ have slight imperfections on about 1/3 on them where as LPWL's are all flawless. (The imperfection is near the top left on the black ring)

For your information :

These O-rings are too thick to be used with CherryCorp keyboards and Cherry reproduction sets (IMSTO / GMK / BSP).

That information is now listed in the OP  :thumb:

Do you have any slim 40A o-rings? I don't think those thick ones will work on my Filco.

Not right now - but probably later in January.

You should not have any problem to use some thicker O-rings with the stock keycaps on your Filco (= OEM profile).

Looks really great! I signed up to keep an eye on this and will probably order some slimmer ones once you have them available. I could order them elsewhere but the fact that you're in Europe gives me the opportunity to support someone locally.

In France, the price of postage has gone up by 15% as of 1 January 2015. :(

Shipping rates have been adjusted to reflect this change.

I get your question now !

I do appreciate that.

I will let you know as soon as I'm ready to sell those thinner O-rings.

I'm planning to build my own GON keyboard (w/ Ergo Clears) & GMK keycaps (= Cherry profile) in the next few months.

So if you have the patience to wait until I'm done then you'll have your answer !

But if I had to give my opinion on this matter, I would say :

Yes, 1.5mm thick O-rings should be fine.

I got mine yesterday. Paid Thursday evening and shipped the next morning.
I ordered 90 of the thickest and 110 of the thinner. Atm I'm using the thicker ones my Keycool 84 key with kalith browns. They feel nice, but perhaps dampen the keyboard a little bit too much for my taste. They remove most of the bottoming out sound which is the main source of noise with that keyboard. (I'm god awful at touchtyping/not bottoming out.)
I needed a keyboard to play games with during the night, and this fits well.
I haven't tried the red ones yet, I haven't made up my mind if I want to use them on my Filco TKL with browns or the fullsized Filco with reds. Leaning towards the reds atm.
Overall I had a great experience with the seller, despite Gollum being a creepy mofo.

Hi Lpwl,

I read the OP and read that the "Fat" O-rings are too thick to be used with "low-profile" keycaps, but then I also saw "If you are using SignaturePlastics keycaps (w/ no crossbar inside), you have to double - sometimes triple - them up."

I have DSA Dolch and DSA PBT Blanks from SP. DSA is a low-medium profile. Will the Fat O-rings work? I think I read something about the crossbar right underneath the top layer of the keycap missing in SP keycaps. I understand that means stacking more O-rings, but is there a fit issue with the width? Can you clarify?

I ordered normal, thin 0.4mm TEX O-rings from Massdrop, but I would like to shorten and soften my key travel distance as much as possible. I'm hoping these Fat O-rings will do nicely.

That's right - these "Fat" O-rings are too thick to be used with Cherry profile keycaps (made by CherryCorp, GMK, BSP or IMSTO).

On the other hand, DSA keycaps (made by SignaturePlastics) work really nicely with O-rings if you are able to stack a few of them on top of each other.

In your case, this setup - one 1.5mm O-ring (for example, one of your TEX O-rings) + one 2.5mm O-ring - would be perfect !

This is exactly what I'm using right now with my DSA Granite set and I'm really enjoying it :p

Wow! 6k O-Rings sold in 3 weeks? That's pretty amazing. Just goes to show how easy selling is when you cater to the right market, and beat the pricing on the easy option by half + have more info on your products (your $9.00 O-Rings vs. WASD's $18.00)

Invoice paid! Awaiting shipping notice whenever you get a chance =). If I like these (never used O-Rings before), I might be getting more if (when?) a round 4 rolls around :).

Received, installed, approved!

Still feel a little like a cat with socks on but the sound dampening not only on bottoming out but as well on caps resonance is amazing (and it looks like I'm more pinging keys than bottoming'em out).

Thanks Lpwl!

Hi there !

Welcome to geekhack :D

I had to get things sorted with a new manufacturer regarding the thickest O-rings (pricing - pre-production sample - quality control... et cetera) and my contact in China is ~8 hours ahead of me so it can be tricky to move things forward as quickly as we would like.

Current exchange rate between USD and EURO is also not really helping.

But I'll do my best and I won't start ROUND 4 until everything looks perfect and is ready for dispatch !

TL;DR - WILL START ON : 8th April | 20th April | 4th May

If you were only interested with the thinnest ones (aka Red "Slim") I might be able to help you - right now - please PM me for more detail !

UPDATE :

It's taking more time than I was expecting but there is nothing to worry about !

This is still happening, just bear with me.

:D ;)

UPDATE (2) :

Monday, March 4th is confirmed.

In for a few packs of thin reds and XXL clears :thumb:.

I must say, these things are damn nice and quite well priced when compared to alternatives (like the ones from WASD). Got some from R3 and they're super soft and comfy. They really make typing on a metal plate a lot more enjoyable. I suggest stocking up :D.

I have the thick rings from R2 (not XXL rings) and I find that those are just right for blues. I imagine the XXL rings being too thick but I've never tested it so I don't know

That's right, thank you Evo_Spec !

I must confess things have gone out of control yesterday.

I was planning to run this sale over a month b-b-but nearly all my "Thick" & "XXL" O-rings were already taken within a few hours !

The order form is now locked until I send all PayPal invoices to those who have already ordered and I will update remaining inventory.

Lpwl,

actually I jumped on the Granite and Dolch Key Set from MassDrop so maybe the XXL are better as you stated on 1st post?

I tried the order form but its closed.

would going with the mid ones (think) let me use them with any type of keycap?

Maybe this?
1xThin
1XThick
1X XXL

any recommendations would be appreciated. thanks!

Both solutions are good with DSA keycaps, you can either use one "XXL" O-ring (=3.0mm) or stacking up two O-rings on top of each other (=1.5mm + 2.5mm ⇔ one "Thin" + one "Thick") like this :

Sadly all "Thick" O-rings are now gone but there is still one LAST bag of "XXL" (^110pcs) available.

I'll unlocked the order form in a few minutes.

Good luck~

;)

For those wondering, I would definitely go with the XXL for any DSA sets you have (or any SP sets really). The issue with SP sets isn't actually a difference in profile, it's the fact that the caps are missing crossbars in them, like classic cherry ones have. The crossbars in classic cherries, take up 25-50% of the area underneath the cap, which works perfectly with O-Rings. When you remove those crossbars, you need a good deal more area. For my tests, using just one thick clear O-Ring had a very minimal effect on my DSA caps and higher row DCS caps (it worked pretty well for the bottom row DCS caps though), but the second I added a second, thin, red O-Ring, everything felt just about perfect. It might have been a bit too much even... meaning the XXL's are perfect, since they're right in between a single thick clear and a thick clear + a thin red. But, you couldn't go wrong with a set of thick clears and thin reds. Together those solve just about all SP problems and, separately, they still handle Cherry profile caps fine :thumb:.

Excite for these to ship lpwl!

This is quite cool. I currently use blue o-rings to ease RSI pain, nice to see another option that may be better. So the best ones to get are the thickest (XXL) ones yeah? Any reason one wouldn't get the thickest? Like perhaps they are worse for gaming or something.

There is no "best" size :)  To quote the OP:

Before reading any further, you must ask yourself ONE question :

      > What profile keycaps will I be putting these O-rings on ?

      • If you are using "low-profile" keycaps, the thinnest O-rings should be great.
      • If you are using stock keycaps (standard / OEM profile), you may want to use some thicker O-rings.
      • If you are using DSA keycaps (no cross-bar support), my new "XXL" O-rings are specially made for you !

Having trouble identifying your keycaps :

[1] This article from Keychatter.com will probably help you.
[2] Jacobolus also made this wonderful compilation.

If you are still not sure, it will be my pleasure to answer you as quickly as possible !

Yeap, the "XXL" ones (=3mm) were specially made for being used with DSA keycaps.

I didn't encounter any problem using these "XXL" O-rings with my CODE keyboard (stock keycaps = OEM profile) but just to be sure, I would recommend you the "thick" ones (=2.5mm) instead.

I'd love to get a 125 pc set of these.  Any idea how well the XXL 3mm rings will work on a Corsair k70?  I'd REALLY like to minimize travel.  Been using low profile rubber dome keyboards prior to this.  With this mechanical keyboard, I love the feel of the press, and the keycaps actually, but they go down for miles.

Careful there !

These REAAAAALLY thick O-rings ("XXL" ones = 3.0mm) in combination with the stock keycaps (OEM profile) of your Corsair K70 keyboard will start to edge into the engineered tolerance of the actuation point of your key switches and as a consequence, you may not be able to actuate every switch comfortably.

You don't want that !  ;)

Thanks for the info!  I'm still very tempted to get a bag of the XXL because maybe I'll want new keycaps or get a new board down the road and these big clear o-rings don't grow on trees.

I just placed an order for fat and hyperfat o-rings. It should be fun to try out.

And...just got the invoice, and paid it as moths flew out of my wallet. :)

Sorry for my inexperience - where do I order? The first post of this thread is empty. I'm using a Filco Majestouch 2 OEM with MX Blues.

hey Lpwl,
I found back to ur thread :D

I bought some "fat" (2.5mm) clear O-rings while ago and could use some more in near future ..

quick question: I got some DSA Granite keys - do the "super fat" 3mm rings work with this ?
quick question2: Will they be in stock in near future ? :)

thx Josh

Received Today, First O ring so I can't really compare.

Only installed on my GMK wasd, and it feels really good, can't wait to use them on gateron clear with lube.

Et merci pour le tire-capuchon  :D
