Brand new model M from Unicomp transformed to UK-ISO
« on: Wed, 09 May 2018, 15:55:33 »
I brought a NOS latin american layout model M and UK keycaps from Unicomp, it worked!
http://www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/1392015
Does not come with SDL to PS/2 cable.
Use 1391406 for UK ISO, consult with Unicomp for other ISO layouts.
A few Unicomp keycaps had misaligned prints, I mixed 2 set of keycaps to make best pair. Original F row were misaligned, it seems Lexmark keycaps had some issues too. Strangely, some key caps I removed from my 2017 Unicomp 104 classic feel extremely scratchy when installed on the 1996 Lexmark but the 101 keycap set I brought from Unicomp fits just fine. Perhaps parts for 104 are made in slightly different dimension?

Isopropyl alcohol has caused damage to the upper case when removing adhesive residue from the spanish overlay, don't use solvents on your keyboard!
195370-2

Edit: Not damaged by IPA but a defect in later model M, same issue seen on gray case from Unicomp.

The Spanish keycaps and overlay is available here for free:

I'm surprised the isopropyl alcohol caused damage. I usually use WD40 for stickers. But probably best to test a small spot underneath or somewhere hidden to double check. Looks like a fun project!

Me too, I've checked a few data sheets wheater PVC could be damaged by isopropyl alcohol and every source said no. Would definite test them every time from now on. Maybe something happened when it mixed with the adhesive or that part was degrading due to age and isopropyl alcohol wiped loose material clean. Now some surfaces under the overlay are shiny with some grain missing. It's very interesting to type on, slightly heavier then my Unicomp and more even then my two other pre-own model M. Would be funny if someone else own this keyboard in the future and try to check the part number, spanish part number with UK keycaps.
