[IC] Mira keypad
« on: Thu, 26 December 2019, 20:05:42 »
I've had the files for this for a long time. I was not happy with how the Mira GB went and I felt the finish was horrible. I have three of them and I've yet to build one because I am so disgusted with it.
I've found an American facility that may make the keypad at a reasonable price so I thought I would share a picture or two.
Is there any interest in a Mira keypad?

I'm certainly interested as I still own a Mira, though perhaps the unfortunate part will be that it'd be difficult to match the TKL and the pad.

What kind of prices would we be talking about for the pad? And how about anodizing and the quality of said anodizing?

This says it all: "I've found an American facility that may make the keypad at a reasonable price so I thought I would share a picture or two."

Notice the significant word in that sentence "MAY".
Until I see the end result I can't comment on anything - cost, anodizing, MOQ.
I'm sharing the pictures of a prototype. Once I see the quality and get an idea of the cost I can see if it's feasible. If it is a reasonable price I will see about the finishing and anodizing.
I will also have to find a PCB.
It is entirely dependent on cost right now and the main cost is material and machining.
For instance the cost of the brass he quoted me to make the weight for the prototype was $100.
2 years ago Big Blue Saw quoted me $80 for brass switch plates for the Mira SE.
That is not feasible to me. The prototype is being made with a stainless weight and frankly I don't like stainless weights but......

I see.

Would you mind explaining why you think that the MIRA SE finish was horrible? I have had my unit for a while and I've seen over a handful of them over the past year and genuinely think it had great machining and anodizing quality.

More importantly, would you consider facilities outside of the United States? I think it closes up a ton of options to try and find a manufacturer only within the US, especially if it's about machining cost and quality, and also finishing and anodizing.

I'm quite new to this scene so not familiar with your previous GB.
but i've been looking for a nice, hotswap, qmk (or at least programmable) numpad.
it'd be a plus if it has an extra row on the top too.

I've been wanting to pick up a premium numpad so I'd definitely be interested. The fact that its manufactured in the U.S. is interesting as well. Gl with this.

The Mira’s I possess have a finish like sandpaper. I personally can’t stand the feel of it against my hands. The red wide body prototype has a different finish. Given that is what I received and I ran the GB you can see how I assume that is the finish of all the Mira SEs.

Rad, interested for sure. Especially if you can find a non slave labor manufacturer.

Bummer there is no way to match colors with the original run. Watching this thread

Glad to see you make an appearance ninjadoc! I gave up my spot to the Mira SE years ago but would still be in for a numpad. I love my Tris and have been wanting another custom numpad for quite some time.

Would love one as well. Mira blue is one of the best shades I've seen used on a board. If it could be matched it'd be an instant buy.

O.O Sandpaper?? Damn, I believe you when you say that but it may just be your board. The one that I have is one of the smoothest boards I've ever used.

The guys who make the Honeyboard up in Canada are looking for design partners and projects. Try reaching out to them.

To be honest you should do a run of the full Mira with them too, the ano on the Honeyboards is supposed to be amazing.
