[IC] WRISTBREAKER TKL
« on: Wed, 09 October 2019, 23:23:31 »
IC Form: https://forms.gle/X7oHLXMGtJdXsjYf9

Hi all!

This IC is for the WRISTBREAKER TKL.

The WRISTBREAKER is a high angle board which takes inspiration from several classic kustoms such as the OTD 456GT, TX1800v2, Duck, TGR Jane, etc. This was at first just a fun little meme project that I didn't think would go anywhere, but once I got the prototype I was really happy with how it turned out. Although not THE heaviest board around, this thing is a hefty beast.

This will be run and fulfilled by goddream

Plate:

Specs
  • 14° angle
  • 1.5mm plate
  • 2x 10mm weights
  • Aluminum case
  • RGB underglow, two frosted acrylic diffusers on the underside
  • USB-C (with daughterboard) compatible with a87 PCBs
  • USB port parallel to desk
  • Fixed ANSI WKL layout (will provide plate file)
  • Compatible with TGR Jane V2 Plates
  • 9.26lbs/4.2kg built

Other technical info:
  • 18.8mm front height
  • 7.8mm bezel height
  • .5mm switch cutout fillets
  • 14mm top bezel, 10mm bottom bezel, 6mm side bezels
  • 19.05mm switch spacing
  • 9.5mm from top of plate to bottom case
  • 8x M3 5mm (case)
  • 7x M3 5mm (plate)
  • 4x M8 16mm countersink (weights)
  • 4x M3 4mm countersink (diffusers)

Differences between v1 and v2 proto:
  • Larger weight 8mm to 10mm thick
  • Modified daughterboard/JST cable cutout
  • Modified plate cuts
  • Various minor internal case changes

Prototype v2

Prototype v1

I'd be into this if the front weren't as high. I actually like around this angle fox XDA keycaps, as long as the front isn't too high.

Can you tell whether the PCB will have hot swap sockets or not. The brass weights look too tame. I feel a copper weight option is also worth exploring.

Since it is only 20 units you can pretty much rule out hotswap pcb. You can use sip sockets though, it will be pretty much the same thing.

Yup, Smoff is correct! There will be no hotswap options since I'll be using the standard h87a PCB. Also regarding copper, copper does seem like a neat option but it's a material that I haven't had experience with. From what I understand copper is a little more expensive, but I do like the look of brass that has some patina on it. In any case, I won't rule out the option for copper cause I think it'd be fun to try out!

Sometimes hollow boards can sound good, and other times they sound bad. This seems to be the latter. Is the interior parallel with the plate and pcb? If it's not, that could explain the sound.

What plate material are you currently using with that prototype, aluminum? I honestly don't think that sounds bad.  Just an idea but, I'm curious if variances in the how "hollow" the bottom half of the case is from the inside could affect the quality of sound. Since the board has such a high angle, there is a lot more material on the bottom case to work with. If anything comes of it you could even go to try providing more of a cavity behind the alphas similar to the concept of a half-plate. Granted, there are a lot of other factors that play into sound quality such as switches, keycaps, plate, case material, etc.

FYI, I am only hearing sound out of the left channel on the video.
