Just snagged a free monitor to use Dual-Head. Main monitor is 1440x900, secondary is 1280x1024. Yeah, it's not symmetrical, but the uses differ, and it works for me. Main is browsing, etc, secondary is IM, HTML Source, Media controls etc...

I had a non-symetrical 23" + 24" setup going for a while too and the second one was for non-primary uses. Problem was that sometimes I'd end up needing to use the second screen more than the first screen. Neck started to hurt from having to keep it turned to the right. It was a great setup up until then.

I bit the bullet and got a real nice 30" monitor earlier this year.

No kidding. I looked my ass off and couldn't find anything that was clearly better as a monitor than the 30" Apple Cinema Display last refreshed in 2004.

Companies did a good job of adding ports, card readers, and making really cool frames, but the newer offerings sucked up considerably more power, were often less bright, and were only slightly cheaper.

That said, any hesitation I had in buying a 5+ year old piece of equipment vanished when I turned it on. It's money.

One went to my dad and the other one I need to keep as a backup monitor and occasional display for my netbook when I've got to do a lot of IE site testing.

You looking for a 23/24" in particular?

hp lp3065

That was one of my contenders, but I can't remember why I crossed it off before the final round. Now that I look at it again, it sure looks like it might have been just as good of a choice for less money. The general reviews look very good across the board. Something scared me away from seriously considering the LP3065, but I can't remember what.

I'm not sure. I just flipped through a bunch of the online sources I was looking at when I was choosing a monitor and I can't find any reason why I'd turn down the LP3065. I had an HP monitor briefly and thought it was one of the best designed monitors I've ever seen, but I had to return that one because it was either defective or didn't like my computer.

The only reason I can think of why I might have turned it down is that I really wanted one of the Dell 30" monitors to win and forgot about the LP3065 when I had to concede that neither of the Dells were what I was looking for.

I owned the LP3065 for a while and absolutely loved it.  Switched to a smaller laptop that didn't support dual-link DVI, so I sold it.  Three dual-link DVI inputs and a beautiful screen.

1920 x 1200 - Samsung 244T 24" S-PVA panel monitor - the only monitor that convinced me to stop using a CRT, man do I hate TN panels...

Someday I'll get me either a Samsung 305T or maybe that LG 3000H-Bn. At $1,200 it's not happening for a long time, I lucked into a deal on the 244T since it still is about a $600 monitor. My dream would be the NEC LCD3090W-BK-SV but it's $2,400...ouch. NEC makes the best displays, but I'm quite pleased with my Samsung as it is. I was originally considering looking for a 30" Cinema Display but I hate that stupid aluminum (I prefer a standard black bezel instead of an overpriced cabinet) and I read about a lot of them developing problems - plus I have real issues giving Apple any of my money...I'm a Microsoft fanboy big time.

No NEC does NOT make the best displays. I've got a NEC LCD that runs in 1024x768 and has the power cables and VGA cords INTEGRATED. Cheap rubbish. It would work good on a mac though =)

1920 by 1200. I'm waiting for that 30 inch I can't resist to buy.

(Firefox + mouseless browsing add-on + some add-ons to save screen space, hovered links appear in the address bar, with also sports a page load progress bar. Separate search field to keep history and auto-complete separated.)

1920x1200 here too. 16:9 is the way to go, death to 16:10 computer monitors - vertical space is more important than to fit movies on the screen.

Maximizing windows on the screen really negates having screen space in the first place - it's all about fitting all your different windows in one view :)

So a Mac would be able to make proper use of it whereas it would fail on a PC? Sounds like another point for Macs!

Yes they do, their top end stuff is high quality. Why blame the company for making cheap products for cheapskates? Besides if it's 1024 x 768 native it's a really old LCD and all you're griping about is the fact the cables don't come out...I've seen companies still using old NEC monitors and our local airport has nothing but NEC and Cisco LCDs - both look fantastic. My university has Cisco LCDs, a few NECs in our nice business school, and the rest has some cheap LGs - most just display announcements so their quality is inconsequential, but the NECs are I'd say 40"-ish and touch screens and they work and look great.

I don't consider any monitors under $500 worthy of judging a company's quality by though - they don't even make the panels, mostly because John Q Generic buyer is so visually impaired they think any LCD looks good (And lucky them they can get a real nice Acer with a 50,000:1 contrast ratio [because it's obviously actually that...and not a bloated sales figure with no verification] - HA!). If you want junk, buy Dell. No matter what 30" I look at there's always at least a couple people saying something like "I came from a Dell 2408wfp-hc" or "I came from a Dell 3008wfp" and they always complain about them breaking and having colour accuracy problems even calibrated. And I can tell you I've seen countless broken Dells on Craigslist and out at the curb. I see cheap Dell 2408wfp monitors all the time - $200ish but I refuse to drop the dime on unreliable junk with poor colour accuracy. I wish they didn't suck, but not much I can do about it.

You are aware that 1920 x 1200 is 16:10 right? I much prefer 16:10 - extra screen space is always better. If you want 16:9 you can always go buy a TV and use it for a monitor instead...always an option. 16:9 can take it's limited space and stick it, I refuse to buy a 16:9 computer monitor. All these rubbish 1920 x 1080 PC displays and whatnot - 1200 > 1080 hence better picture. You have to sacrifice on a TV but on my PC I expect the best.

Yeah, I really can't stand 16:9 for a computer. Also it is funny to see people claim "I bought a big screen!" and then it's just a 16:10 with ****ty vertical space.

Hey, my 16:10 has more vertical space than any 4:3 ever made. ;)

(IIRC, the best 4:3s are (2560x)1920 pixels tall, and that's not officially supported, the best 5:4 monitors are (2560x)2048 pixels tall and are ridiculously expensive medical displays. Have to get to 5:4 CRT projectors to beat my 16:10 panel for vertical space, the BarcoReality 909 can do 3200x2560.)

That's because there are more TVs made than computer screens, therefore that's what the manufacturers are making, and therefore if you want them to make something else, it's more expensive.

At work, I'm running a 1600x1200 CRT, and a 1024x1280 (TN, ugh) LCD. (Yes, I got the order right. Oriented vertically. Note to self: TN panels oriented vertically = fail, but it is nice for monitoring a helpdesk ticket queue.)

Of course, what was I thinking about?  I mixed up the ratios - 16:10 is the way to go.
24" monitors tend more and more towards 16:9, and I asked myself if I could live with the lower vertical resolution - which I could not.

By the way, I have three 24" monitors, two have stopped working. I'm convinced it's only one simple component inside that's causing it, because when turned on, there's picture for 1-2 seconds, then a faint 'click' and it's dead. Anyone here repaired any of those?

How "dead" is it?

Is the power LED still lit? If so, shine a flashlight into the screen - it might just be the backlight inverter that's failed.

What's your main computer's screen resolution?

1920x1200 on a 24" HP W2408H. I would like two smaller monitors on each side. Something like 1280x1024. Like a window with doors.
I would have to chance my speakerstands though.

2560x1600 in the center(HP LP3065).  Absolutely awesome for everything, especially text.  Though sometimes a tad too large for gaming.  All my computers switch to this one through an Avocent SC8 KVM switch.

On the left 1920x1200(LP2475w).  My main workstation's task bar is on this screen(5 rows high).  The main workstation has a dedicated mouse and keyboard, so I can always instantly interact with it.  The slightly larger pixel pitch keeps it readable even though it's a tad farther away, but is otherwise slightly sub-optimal.  If money was no object I'd probably replace it with another LP3065.

On the right 2 2048x1152(Samsung 2343BWX mounted one above the other), give me a lot more pixels, for a lot less money, at a nearly identical dot pitch to the LP3065.  They spend 99% of the time switched to the main workstation.  Sometimes their poor viewing angles make things a little harder to read.   Again, if money was no object they'd be replaced with another LP3065.

All 4 monitors are mounted on monitor arms attached to the wall.  The 2 Samsungs share one arm.  It gives my desk has plenty of room for keyboards, mice, powerstrips, and piles of paper.  The main workstation drives them all with a Sapphire Radeon 4850x2, which has 4 DVI outs.

My setup is a bit of a hodge podge but I love working and playing with it.

Currently i use 19" Eizo with 1280x1024. My next monitor should have a bigger
pixel distance for example 0x303mm (27" Eizo with 1920 x 1200). It should make
long text readings resp. coding sessions more pleasant..
Selfmade Keyboard I (done)
DT225 CH Trackball

Selfmade Keyboard II (95% completed)

30 inch is too big for gaming?  I was wondering about that.  Maybe I should look at 27 inch.

I think that this is a bit of a double-edged saying. On one end there is the habit of using the current monitor going from a smaller resolution/size to a larger one is new adaption. And the other being that 2560x1600 is a hell of a lot of pixels(4,096,000) and requires a lot of power; especially for gaming.

Guess at the same time it's diminishing returns though who's to say for those who have a use for it.

Like Arc mentioned, 2560x1600 is quite a huge resolution for a GPU to drive, however you do have the option of running the game at 1920x1200 or even 1680x1050 if you really had to.  The upside, though, is that the higher the resolution, the less important AA is, so that helps out on the GPU processing front.

I've got a Dell 2000FP @ 1600x1200. I've had it as my main for almost 10 years now (and I use my computer _a lot_), amazing the backlight still works. Really nice monitor. My next one will be a 4:3 too (if they aren't super expensive then). Don't really like widescreen on computer screens.

using 4 monitors at the moment...
3 lcds... PLP
NEC 20wmgx2 @ 1680x1050 in portrait, 27" imac 2560x1440 landscape,  another 20wmgx2@ 1680x1050 portrait

I'd like apple to release some new cinema displays already...nobody else likes glossy displays I guess.  I can control my lighting so it's not a big deal.  Don't care for anti glare matte coatings.

and how can I forget my trusty NEC CRT...can't beat the feel of 160hz for gaming :D
