Title: [GB] OG Coil Cables - Ended, Extras Available
Post by: donutcat on Wed, 04 April 2018, 23:56:11
The GB is "officially" over and extras are available at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSce4AvDV8vMMtP6gu7MnzMT9uFK3zQ3bKHsuwhy9p7YMxdIEg/viewform

---
Update 7/06/18
Cables are on hand and I'm preparing for production.

Update 6/24/18
Cables are currently processing through Customs according to the tracking.

Update 5/24/18
Payment has been submitted to the manu, estimated ship date of 12 days after payment clears.

Update 5/21/18
Got in touch with the manu this morning to get a quote on the final quantities before submitting the order. Looking to have the order submitted by the end of the week.

Update 05/04/18
Invoices are sent out after a bit of a mixup. If you don't have an invoice, check for an email from me about fixing your order before I could invoice it.

Update 04/19/18
Alright fellow cable enthusiasts, I figured it's time for an update on the cable situation since it's near the "initial" end date. As of right now, these are the numbers:

Black - 106/100
Beige - 60/100
Magenta - 17/100

Assuming minimal dropouts and that everyone has filled out the form correctly, black has met MOQ, beige is at 60% with a chance to hit, magenta is at 17% with little chance to hit MOQ. I'll go ahead and extend the buy period another week since I do think we can get enough beige orders to get it to the tipping point. Additionally, I'll start doing math on where the orders are coming from and looking at proxy options since we have a substantial number of orders currently.

Update 04/12/18
Current MOQs
Black - 81/100
Beige - 45/100
Magenta - 14/100

GB goes until 4/20 and may be extended at that time.

Most of the relevant information is in the form but I'll copy some of it over here:
"
This is the order form for OG Coil Cables

What are OG Coil Cables? These cables aim to mimic the look and feel of the coiled cables on vintage keyboards while being able to be used on modern boards. Thick wire combined with smooth factory coils give an aesthetic like no other.

There will be three colors of cables available utilizing the RAL color codes 4010(magenta) 7044(beige) and 9005(black), which will all be shown below. The colors can also be seen at https://www.ralcolorchart.com/
The available terminations for these cables include USB A, USB B, USB Mini, USB Micro, USB C, unterminated, and others available on request.
All colors of heatshrink available on my normal cables will be available for these cables.
The exact dimensions of the cables can be seen in the diagram lower down.
Please submit the form once for each cable you want, my scraper can only deal with single item submissions.

Pricing is $21 for terminated cables, $14 for unterminated(both ends) cables. Odd or custom terminations may increase the price, this will be discussed before invoicing.
Shipping is via USPS First Class, upgraded to Priority for large/heavy orders.
Shipping will be calculated based on your given address when invoices are sent.

In for at least one black and one beige, need to measure my F107 before I can commit to a third, it needs a long run on the inside but 500mm should be plenty.

If we order multiple cables, will they be invoiced together?

Yes, to accurately scrape the order sheet there needs to be only 1 set of cable options per submission, but multiple submissions from the same email will be added together for invoicing.

How long do you plan to run the GB for?

Not entirely sure, I figured I'd go 2 weeks and see how the numbers are doing then go from there.

Is TRRS an option?

TRRS could be ordered if you choose the "Other" choice.

Approved :)

Thanks for the quick approval :3

If we order a cable terminated in USB A at one end and USB C at the other, will the cable have the appropriate 56k ohm resistor to follow the usb type c spec?

I see the limits in the RAL for the magenta, but I'm wondering why the black is 9011 Graphite Black instead of 9005 Jet Black. Do you have pics of samples for both? I can see 9011 looking like MaxKey Ninja which is a little too on the grey side.

https://www.ralcolorchart.com/ral-classic/ral-9011-graphite-black
vs
https://www.ralcolorchart.com/ral-classic/ral-9005-jet-black

Sorry if this was already covered in the [IC] - I just noticed the actual spec.

I'm in for both pink and black once I get to the forms.

The C connectors I use are only 2.0 capable, meaning that they have those resistors by default.

I went with 9011 cause I thought it might look better in the matte finish, but comparing them again it may be best to switch to 9005.

sorry for being dumb. but what's terminated, unterminated?

Terminated is having any of the connector choices present there or using a custom one, unterminated means you'll receive the cable with no connectors on it. Some people wanted this in order to add their own connectors or use it with a fixed cable board.

I’m tight on cash right now, when is the deadline for joining this?

No real hard deadline, in two weeks I'll evaluate where the numbers are and decide then whether or not to keep it going longer, up to a max of four weeks.

I wonder on the ageing - would the matte finish go glossy over time, or would a glossy finish go matte?

Personally I prefer the idea of glossy black coil cables but I'm cool with either.

I'll end the [IC]-esque digressions, on with the [GB].

I would like to reiterate, if you are ordering more than 1 cable, please submit the form for each cable. It's much easier to scrape the form results for MOQ numbers and overall order data when each submission is for a single cable. All orders to the same PayPal will be consolidated into a single invoice.

I measured the stock Realforce cable on my 87UB55 with calipers to be 4.75 mm in diameter. A 6.5mm cable will fit through the opening in the plastic housing but without modification, its not going to fit through the cable routing channels.

So, I'mma try to keep a live track of MOQ on this thread maybe at least once a day.

Current MOQs:
 - Black - 24/100
 - Beige - 14/100
 - Magenta - 4/100

Looking pretty good currently, those are the numbers based solely on submissions, 1/4 of the way on black, 1/7 of the way on beige, a solid start for magenta seeing as it's the "why not" color. There are a couple people that have stated in the comment box that they'd like more(+5 black, +1 beige) but those will need to be properly submitted to be counted for MOQ tracking and invoicing.

MOQ isn't fixed, we'd actually benefit from going over it. I am ok with shipping internationally as long as people are understanding of the prices. According to the manu each of these cables weighs 240g or 8.5oz, so shipping to a couple different locations including 2.5oz packaging weight is listed below as a reference:
Canada - ~$16
Australia - ~$23
Germany - ~$23
Hong Kong - ~$23
Croatia - ~$23
France - ~$23
South Korea - ~$23

This is all for single cables and approximated due to minor variations of like $.20 between locations, and is unfortunately higher than I was initially anticipating. Proxying could potentially work if there's enough orders from areas to justify the bulk shipments from me to the proxy and their proxying costs. I'll have to look into that further.

Would love to join but shipping will probably kill it for me  :-\

Yeah, shipping is a bit unfortunate due to the bulk of the cables.

Looks like the highest CONUS shipping for a single cable should be about $5 from me to California. More than one will require a step up to priority due to the weight, but I may be able to get by with small flat rate for those.

Go pink go-go-go!

I guess we are only six people with any light left in our cold dead hearts. I weep for your souls for the glory is among us and you do not see.

With unterminated ends, can you include a termination for me to solder myself, or are they too specialized? I see now why detachable cables are prevalent--fixed cables are a pain.

Black should hit MOQ no doubts, beige also has a really strong chance, magenta is trying. If any of them don't hit I'll see about buying them to MOQ myself. Worst case I'll give the option to switch to one of the colors that does hit MOQ if one of them doesn't.

Adding in the numbers for tonite:

Black - 62/100
Beige - 34/100
Magenta - 11/100

The "beige" color option is silk grey.  The beige option for the /dev/tty keysets was also grey.  It just seems that some people are using beige and grey interchangeably. https://www.magazinecafestore.com//media/catalog/product/1/4/14-1118_beige_1.jpg (https://www.magazinecafestore.com//media/catalog/product/1/4/14-1118_beige_1.jpg) How are people getting grey from this?

It's very easy with the limited RAL colors available to pick a color that would be too saturated for the look we're hoping to achieve, so I think it better to er for a faded and more grey color that would still be a safe bet to use on a model m for example.

Joined for a black one. I intended to get a beige one but I would like to use the cable on multiple boards so the black one looks better on different boards. Will have to see if I join for an extra beige one later though.

I vote for a quick round of redistribution of the magentas to the black and beige - I'm certainly converting one magenta to one black, maybe there are others who would do the same for beige to help hit MOQ.

Alright, here's the current numbers:

Black - 120/100
Beige - 73/100
Magenta - 18/100

At this point, I'll go ahead and confirm that I'll bump beige to MOQ since it's reasonably close, and I feel that the uncertainty might be holding some people back who would otherwise be interested. I'll also state that magenta is not going to hit MOQ, so please don't submit more orders for it.

Moving onto the proxying situation. At the moment I'm working on going over the number of orders per region(Canada, EU, Asia, Australia) and evaluating the the price efficiency of bulk shipping those. Right now it's approximately $23 to anywhere outside of NA for a single cable going up to around $34 for 4(the largest quantity I've received in an Intl order). Here's some breakdowns for the regions:

Canada - 8 orders with 13 total cables.
Shipping individually:
 - Single - ~$16
 - Two - ~$16
 - Three - ~$25
Shipping combined:
 - ~$4.64 per cable + proxy shipping cost.

EU - 13 orders with 24 total cables.
Individual shipping:
 - Single - ~$23
 - Two - ~$23
 - Three - ~$34
Shipping combined:
 - ~$3.85 per cable + proxy shipping cost.

Asia - 10 orders with 20 total cables.
Individual shipping:
 - Single - ~$23
 - Two - ~$23
 - Three - ~$33.5
 - Four - ~$33.5
Shipping combined:
 - ~$4.95 per cable + proxy cost.

Australia - 3 orders with 10 total cables.
Individual shipping:
 - Three - ~$34
 - Four - ~$34
Combined shipping:
 - ~$7.6 per cable + proxy cost.

I don't know anything about domestic shipping costs in other countries, but looking at the numbers it looks like the proxying route is the most cost efficient for all regions. I should be able to find a proxy easily for Canada/EU/Australia, but I am concerned about finding one for Asia since I don't really know anyone other than zFrontier, and something like this isn't really what they usually deal with. If anyone has any suggestions for proxies I'm listening.

Nice breakdown of everything, thanks for putting in the work for that.

I can't speak for other regions but within Europe shipping costs are usually pretty tame - for example when I'm shipping bags of SA/DSA sets (which are not super heavy, but still) in packets/small boxes it usually costs me like 3-10€ (from Portugal) depending on destination, tracked and ensured. Other countries probably have slightly pricier rates but at $3.85 per cable that's like $7 or something per person as it stands plus, let's say, $10 for domestic, that's still a lot better than $25 per cable and definitely a lot better than $35 for a few.

I've got Mechboards.co.uk onboard as EU proxy, but I've not been able to get in contact with Monokei just yet, so I'm not wanting to move ahead until I can or find another suitable proxy for Asia/Australia. The form is still currently open and we have an EU proxy secured, I'm still trying to contact other proxies and am actually having an issue with people actually replying to my messages :\ What I may end up doing is invoicing for just the cables themselves and then waiting until I'm ready to ship to invoice shipping, that way I'll have some extra time to get potential proxies to actually reply, and I'll know whether or not people will drop or not for better math.

Alright, so here's the current state of things:

Cables ordered:
Black - 142
Beige - 94

So beige ended up not even needing much help to get there.

The current plan: I'll leave the form open until tomorrow morning, then I'll begin the invoicing process without shipping. Shipping invoicing will be done when the cables are ready to go, after I've had more time to get in contact with proxies despite the current lack of communication and when I'll have a better estimate of the actual shipping costs without having to just rely on what the manu tells me they "should" weigh.

I've contacted I believe 13 people about their magenta orders and haven't heard back from four of them, and I've contacted several people wanting custom ends on their cables with no replies yet. If you ordered either a magenta cable or one with "Other" ends on it, please check if you have an email from me. If I don't hear back from you, I'll automatically cancel the magenta orders since they're not being made and most likely cancel the few custom ones that I cannot price without further details.

That ones about 23mm, so the production ones will be slightly bigger around. Note that the cable there is only about 5mm, so the coils to cable size proportions should be roughly the same with the production cables.

Small update:
Currently waiting on 12 invoices to be paid before we move onto the next phase. I sent a reminder Friday and there were 18 unpaid then, so I figure waiting a few more days isn't out of the question. As soon as they're paid I can get final order numbers and submit the bulk order.

There are currently 5 people I'm waiting to hear back on for order details. If I do not hear back by the time the last invoice is paid I will not include your order, so please be sure to check your email thoroughly if you placed and order and haven't received and invoice.

Nah.

At least, usually you don't. I know some makers don't mind it, but not really necessary.

Down to 7 invoices unpaid currently. I'm planning on starting the ordering process Sunday night(early Monday China time) so if the invoices haven't been paid by then, you'll have to joint the waiting list for extras. At this point it's been 2 weeks since they were sent, so I don't see an issue setting a cutoff.

4 orders left unpaid and with no contact. I've sent reminders declaring tomorrow as the cutoff since I don't feel like holding up the buy any longer. I'll be getting in contact with the manu this evening(morning China time) to get the final quote and work on submitting the order.

hey  mr donut! Any idea on ETA for this cable?

Thx

Right now it's an estimated two weeks for the cables to get shipped to me, at which point non-proxy unterminated cables will be shipped out, and then I'll begin working on the terminated cables. I'll begin work on the proxy orders, get them out first then move onto the CONUS ones and ship them as I finish them working down the order numbers. There's a total of ~230 orders, so I'm not completely certain on when I'll be able to get them out. I'd expect proxy orders to be shipped from me within a week of receiving the cables and CONUS orders to begin going out immediately after, assuming no hiccups in production.

What would be super cool would be if you'd offer a design with a longer micro-usb end, to make it perfect for Ellipse's new F77. That keyboard has a length of cable inside the case you see. A little more than half the length of the long piece in the current cable added to the micro-usb end, would do it imho.

At the current length I'm already playing with the USB's rated length for data transfer, so I'd need to change the design of the cable pretty noticeably to get more length out of it. Good news is as long as the manu sticks to their end of the agreement with production, I'll be looking to work with them in the future for more cables like this.

I'm guessing there might be a formatting error or something, but they're supposed to email me a form to fill out and send back to prove my information is correct and that the shipment really is mine. Well, unfortunately there's not a "grey and beige", there's just the single color that's meant to be beige.

(https://i.imgur.com/NwUHln4.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/NwUHln4.jpg)

It does seem that the "beige" came out less saturated than I had expected from that RAL code, and direct lighting doesn't much help the coloration though in dimmer lighting it's a bit better.

Title: Re: [GB] OG Coil Cables - In US Customs
Post by: donutcat on Sat, 07 July 2018, 22:31:58
Ok, so here's what's happening with this currently.

I've gone through and inspected all three boxes of cables and they seem up to snuff. Two gimpy ones per color that weren't packed as tight as the rest due to the number of them and got slightly crushed out of straight, but that's what extras are for.

As an experiment, I hung one of the extras by the short end and left it hanging by it's own weight over night as a test of coil strength. 24hrs+ later it still springs back into shape with no visible distortion or weakness in the coils.

While the cables are awesomely thick, some of my current tools weren't quite up to the job of working on them. I've got a pair of coax strippers in the mail that will do a much better job of giving me clean cuts and strips on the cables.

To help keep the coils super springy, part of the customization I ordered was 22awg inner conductors instead of the usual 30-28awg that USB has. An unintended side effect of this is that the current batch of USB Mini connectors I have on hand(a result of a seller not actually selling what the item picture depicted) cannot fit the conductors without shorting. To fix this, I've ordered the pricier connectors that will be able to fit the 22awg conductors without issue. USB A, Micro, and C are not affected by this issue due to the layout of the solder points on those connectors.

The last thing I'm working on right now is finalizing how I'll be shipping the cables. I prefer to ship them without having them all bent out of straight, but due to their size finding the perfect packaging for this has been difficult. As part of finding decent quality boxes that will be good for shipping, I've currently got one of the extras in a box and sitting on my laptop power supply(toasty!) to simulate heat that the packages may encounter in shipping. After 1-2 days I'll open the box and see if any distortion happened due to the heat to decide if I feel good about these boxes I have or if I want to move to different ones.

I'm hoping that shipping times on the tools/connectors will be short so that I can dive right into working on these cables. If you're in the US and your order consisted of *only* unterminated cables, you'll most likely see a shipping invoice within the next week or so when I've got packaging nailed down and those orders ready to ship. For all of the orders, please bear with me while I'm working on this crucial part of the process on these cables. We've come so far and I really want these to make it to you guys as perfect as possible.

Edit: Also, I would like to remind everyone to make sure their shipping addresses are up to date in their PayPal. When I send out shipping invoices that's the address I'll be shipping to, not the one that was on the form for logistics mapping.

Can you terminate cables with right-angle USB mini connectors?  The CA66 has a USB mini connector on the left side, instead of on the top edge -- it seems like a right angle connector might be a good option.

Can you terminate cables with right-angle USB mini connectors?  The CA66 has a USB mini connector on the left side, instead of on the top edge -- it seems like a right angle connector might be a good option.

Unfortunately there's no good DIY solution for right/left angle connectors currently since the only ones available are the cheapy plastic ones that are lacking in durability, have no secure attachment to the cable itself, and just don't look very nice.

What about mine which will be terminating with a ps2 connector for OTD boards?

Alright, so after leaving the aforementioned cable packed in a box sitting on my laptop brick to simulate heat since Saturday, I've opened it just a bit ago. The coiled portion at first seemed fine, but trying to lay it flat there is just the very slightest wave in it that I don't like. Also, the long straight side now has a noticeable curve in it compared to being mostly straight going in. Realistically it's not that bad, but I'm picky so I'll be testing some different sizes of shipping tubes over the next couple days to see what keeps the cables in mint condition in shipping. Additionally, I got my new cable strippers in today and it seems like they're going to give perfect cuts on the cable, so that's one obstacle out of the way of production.

What about mine which will be terminating with a ps2 connector for OTD boards?

There shouldn't be much, if any, delay on your cables compared to the other terminated ones.

Alright, so the first shipping invoices have gone out this afternoon for the CONUS unterminated cables. I'm confident in this batch of boxes that I've chosen to use and I'll be looking forward to feedback from the recipients to confirm that the packaging works as well as my testing showed. Additionally, I've received my shipment of Mini connectors and as planned the internal layout of the connector will make it much easier to avoid shorts(even though they're comfy and easy to wear). I would like to remind people to please make sure their address in their PayPal is up to date before paying the shipping invoices since the PayPal address is what I'll be shipping to.

One other thing that I'd like to bring up that might be relevant to my estimated production timeline. A couple weeks back my grandfather had surgery on his foot to try and repair his crumbling bones. Due to that he's going to be in a cast and largely unable to move around on his own for the next 3-4 months. Because of this, quite a bit more of my time than usual is spent helping him move around, get in and out of bed and his chair, yard work at his house, and other things he's currently unable to do on his own while recovering. This means I have less time in a day to work on stuff than I used to and that I'm more often away from my workspace. I'm still planning on trying my best to be able to get these cables out in a reasonable amount of time, but I want to make people aware that I may not be able to stick to the original timeline, and I hope people will be understanding of that. If your order is time sensitive, ie you're moving soon, PM me and I'll see what we can work out, within reason.

For those of us getting unterminated cables, are there recommendations you can make on the connectors to use? It sounds like you've given it quite a lot of thought.

I'm not sure what's necessarily the best in this case since working with materials this thick isn't something I've done before, but I'll show roughly what I'm going to be using:

 - USB A - https://www.ebay.com/itm/100Pcs-USB-2-0-Type-A-4-Pin-Male-Three-Types-Plug-Connector-For-PC-DIY/170939237861?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
This is the same design as the connectors I buy in bulk. The solder cups are large and fairly easy to get even the 22ga wires on these cables into without shorting. The "flaps" won't quite reach around the outer insulation to crimp it, but I've had success crimping it around the inner conductors themselves, which are plenty strong for this use case, and I'll actually put a little bit of tape or heatshrink around the inner wires to add a bit more girth and insulation against possible shorts.

 - USB Mini - https://www.ebay.com/itm/100Pcs-Mini-USB-5-Pin-Male-Socket-Connector-For-DIY/180896132386?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
This is the same design as my Mini connectors I order. With only three of the solder cups across the bottom it gives just that extra bit of spacing needed to avoid shorting, though a steady hand is still needed. When using this style though you also need to leave the D- line slightly longer than the other three to reach that upper 4th cup.

 - USB Micro - https://www.alliedelec.com/keystone-electronics-941/70182298/
Finding Micro connectors with metal casings is hard, like so hard. So far these are the only ones I've found that I trust, but unfortunately they are a bit pricey. They also have a different pinout than other Micro connectors, something I had to learn the hard way when I first started using them. Same as with the Mini, only having three pads wide makes it much easier to deal with the larger than normal conductors in these cables.

 - USB C - https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=527443161621
Same as with Micro, it's hard as balls to find C connectors with metal housings, even more so C2.0, which is kinda why I wasn't able to. So far these are the best C2.0 connectors I've been able to find even though they're plastic housing. I have been able to get some samples of metal housings that might fit the inserts I have, but I'll need to test them on a cable first.

These are what I'll be trying to work with over the next couple weeks. I'm confident in them working, but I'll be letting everyone know if something doesn't work like I'm expecting it to.

Received my unterminated cables today. Jacket material is excellent, but a bit stiff. Coils are even and have excellent rebound when stretched. Only improvement would be to have ends exit coil inline with the coil itself instead of perpendicular to it.

Overall very pleased. Thanks!

Glad to hear you like it! The coil end direction was a design choice since I wasn't sure if the stiffness of the coils would allow enough flex leading up to the board for people to angle the cable like they wanted and coming out sideways would allow them to lay along the back of the board quite easily. Also, how did the packaging work out? I'm hoping that it didn't cause any weird bends in the cables.

Box work well. Cables were fine. The jacket is very resilient.

Small update, I got 15 cables shipped out the past week and another almost 14 orders that are ready to be packed and are waiting on some last testing to make sure they're good to go before they're shipped. Just a heads up that progress this coming week may be a little slower since I have to get Heck-keys packed and shipped, though that should just be a matter of a few days.

Yes, you'll receive a shipping invoice when your cable is ready to go out the door.

Neat, how many total cables were ordered again?

Approximately 260, my largest order to date for any single item.

In other news, apologies for the lack of updates. Last week was just a complete mob of irl things that needed to be done between bills, groceries, dr visits, pharmacy visits, computer replacement, data migration, etc, as well as working on shipping Heck-keys, which at 187 units are my current 2nd largest order I've had to fulfill, and I'm pretty sure I ended up out doing things more of the time last week than I was in the house due to everything that needed doing out of town, and I just wasn't able to keep up with stuff online nearly as much as I usually try to. Even today I was up before 8 and out of the house until 2, and then almost immediately had to bring today's batch of Heck-keys to the post office. One thing I hadn't counted on was my brothers being at band camp for several weeks leaving me to be the only one to stay with my granddad during the day when my grandmother has to go do things, so that does eat into production time as well. I hate having to have all this stuff affect my ability to get work done because it feels bad to me that I'm not getting done as much as I should be, but I am very much appreciative to people being understanding about it all.

For updates this week I am still working my way through single orders as much as I can with the time I have. Even the new connectors aren't the easiest to make work with this custom cable, so I'm having to spend more time per cable making sure everything inside the connector is basically perfect with no chance of shorting between the much larger than normal conductors before I'm confident in calling them complete. Good news is I'm getting better each one I'm doing and am able to adapt my workflow to cut down time as I'm going, so I'm hoping for an increase in production speed when I have the time to commit. Thanks again to everyone who's been so understanding and supportive, I'm really hoping to give you guys essentially perfect cables after this is done.

Yes, cables are shipped to the address on PayPal when you pay the shipping invoice.

Status update for this week: slightly more time on my hands so 15 cables made and shipping invoiced over the past 3 days with 12 of them being the past 2. The past 7 or so I haven't even had to adjust after testing, so maybe I'm actually getting good at dealing with the intricacies of forcing these mammoth cables into normal USB connections. I'm hoping to continue with the trend of at least 6 a day when I've got time. Each cable taking ~50mins each to complete means it does take a decent amount of time to get several out per day.

One thing I'd like to touch on, please keep an eye out for your shipping invoices. Not paying your shipping invoices takes up my time keep and eye on your order for payment and means I have boxes stacking up that I have to keep track of as well as try not to trip over in my already space-lacking room. Because of this if you don't respond in four days I'll use your cable to fulfill another order(if possible) and move your order down in the queue(how far down depends on how long you take to pay after the four day mark.)

On to the less-good news. Unfortunately absolutely none of the C connector variations I have fit this combination of thick af cable and inner wires. Variant 1 has pads large enough to deal with the larger conductors but the shell physically cannot fit onto the cable itself, making it impossible to solder the connector on. Variant 2 has a metal shell that doesn't need to be slid on, but uses very thinly spaced pads that are already super hard to fit 28ga wires on, nvm 24/22ga. Unfortunately I can't swap the connector inserts between shells because the notches in the metal shell that hold the insert don't have a mating notch in the other insert, so trying to plug them into something just results in the insert sliding into the shell instead of the device. This is an absolute pain in the ass to deal with and I've been taking time since I found this out to search for new connectors that are some sort of hybrid of these two, but so far no dice, though I'll continue looking for the time being. If anyone here ordered a C cable, please contact me if you think you may want to switch connectors or terminations in the interest of perhaps getting your order sooner since currently I'm working through all of the non-C orders to keep up my production schedule.

As always, thanks so much for your patience and understanding so far as I continue to work on getting your orders to you.

Thanks for the updates again. It kind of sounds like USB-C won't be feasible. I mean if folks start changing their orders then is it viable if only a minority with USB-C orders remain? It kind of sucks since I bought some USB-C extension cables so might have to buy new ones with another connector type. I'm not in a big hurry so I think I will wait it out and as a worst case I can change my order if it comes down to it.

Even if there's only a few people with C orders after it's over I'll still try my best to find something that'll work out for them. Currently I'm still browsing through manufacturers and digging through datasheets to find something that'll work with these absolute unit cables.

Shipping invoices haven't gone out for Asia yet. I'm hoping to finish up the current CONUS orders in one more week and then moving onto proxy orders. If this sample of C connectors that I've ordered works with the cables then I'll aim for getting orders completed and shipped to the proxy(assuming there's no issues with payment) around two weeks after that, so an estimated three weeks total. I will have to start working on ScrabblePad and budget96 orders starting soon, so I'm hoping that working on those won't impact my timeline too much.

I've starting thinking about this given the connector options, but I'm not quite sure how I'd be able to do it cleanly and consistently.

Just got mine, and was marveling at the box it was shipped in before I opened it, and understood *why*... This thing is straight up THICK and huge. Coil section is length of a 1800/full-size keyboard.

Frankly speaking with no doubt, the "beige" is actually a grey in person, but still goes well with the vintage OG colorways in general.

I'm still working on some US orders, I think you should be getting an invoice later this week or early next week.

Another thing that's come up, if anyone that's received their Micro order could confirm that their cable is working as it should. I've discovered that the controller I was using to test them might have possibly been giving false positives and want to check on that since I don't have much else to test Micro with.

Right now I'm not wanting to give an estimate since things could easily change. I currently know *roughly* when they should be available, but that's still dependent on the type C issue being resolved and no other issues popping up. Also, extras will be made available from the backups that I've ordered so depending on how production goes there could not be many at all actually available. I've already got a couple that will be "B stock" at best due to some visual imperfections.

That is mostly likely because I have not gotten to your order yet. I'm still working on US orders currently or you could be one of the type C orders that is waiting on new connectors.

Alright, time for a status update; some of it's good news, some of it not so good.

I've reached the end of the current batch of US orders and next week will be the beginning of the proxy order batches. Most of the proxy batches are relatively small, so I expect them to go fairly quickly. Of concern there though is my next point of discussion.

USB Micro: As I mentioned before, I think my pro micro I was using to test Micro cables may have somehow been sending false positives as I've had two cases of delivered Micro cables showing odd behavior and not connecting completely. Currently I'm not sure at all why this could be happening since my test pro micro was connecting and I know of no reason why Mini would work with the length of these cables and not Micro. To try and fix this, I will be getting ahold of a non-pro micro keyboard with Micro port to test on and will be testing what I possibly can to see why this isn't working. I suspect it may be related to power draw over the length of the cable but will need to test to find out. For anyone with a Micro order you'll be receiving an email tomorrow saying basically what I've said here to explain the issue and give options. Anyone that's already received their cable will get a new confirmed working one once I've figured that out, anyone yet to receive one won't have to do anything to get an "updated" one. If changes need to be made to the design of the cable I'll verify that is acceptable before shipping.

Type C: C has much less available for the DIY market than Mini, Micro, B, or even something like HDMI, which I have no clue why you would try to DIY. After so much time spent digging through search results, I still am unable to find connectors that are compatible with these cables, which are so far out of USB spec due to the intentions of the design. After this much time has passed, I'm not confident that spending much more time and delaying orders further, especially in the case of the proxy orders, would allow me to find connectors that would work for something so far out of their intended usage. Because of this, I must very regretfully state that I am unable to complete orders with USB C connectors and I sincerely apologize that this had to happen. Anyone in the GB with a USB C order will receive an email sometime tomorrow giving them the options of changing their connectors, complete refund(single cable order), or partial refund(multiple cable order).

Sorry that this update had to be such a Debbie-downer, the fact of the matter is that it's taking all I've got at the moment just to keep throwing myself into getting these orders out. Everything for these was supposed to be as simple as putting ends on an unsleeved cable and out the door, but here it is taking almost an hour for an order, more if it's a double/triple order, as well as the overall delay. I'm at least happy that the people that have gotten their orders so far are liking them; the fact that so much work has to go into them coupled with so much of this GB going wrong so far, these new updates included, is enough some days to make me reconsider getting out of bed to try doing anything in a day. I hope that people continue to enjoy their cables, despite my own shortcomings involved in their creation, and I'll try to keep on going until they're done. I just need to learn from my experiences this time around and use that to make future rounds a better experience.

Sorry to hear about all these unforeseen issues Donut.

If it's any consolation, if you end up converting all of the USB C cables to Mini, I'm sure you would have no problem offloading those.

I for one would very much like to buy one or two more with the Mini connector

Hi Donut,

What would you think of terminating the thick cable in an aviation connector, then using a pigtail of normal cable that *can* be terminated in a USB-C connector on the other side of the aviation connector (and terminating *that* in USB-C)?  Obviously it would cost more for the extra parts, and I don't see aviation connectors used in the cables shown on your site, but would you be at all interested in trying that?

FWIW, if the issue with Micro can be cleared up, I'd definitely be in for another cable in that connector, since USB-C to Micro adapters are cheap and unobtrusive.

So, things just got a little more wonky. I borrowed a masterkeys pro L from my brother since I don't own any boards that use Micro and was going to use it to test whether or not a cable was working as I messed with it. Lo and behold, I plug an unmodified cable in to see what happens and it just works   Sooo, now I'm really confused since I figured this would have been among the higher power draw boards as it has individual RGB and would have given me a good point of reference for other boards. I guess this at least confirms that the cables have sound connections, but still points towards boards not being able to "reach" the computer with power/signal. I'll dig around and see if anyone else in the house has a Micro device that I can test with.

Another small update from today's Micro experimentation: I started cutting length off a b-stock cable a little bit at a time. ~4" off the total cable length and the previously mentioned pro L still worked, but now an old phone out of the "old electronics we keep around for no good reason" bin also would connect, albeit sometimes the computer said it had a driver issue but even then it was connected more than previously. Trying to troubleshoot this occasional hiccup, I cut another ~1" off; pro L still connects fine, phone no longer. Repeat for another ~1"; pro L still connects, phone does not. I'm only slightly more confused than when I started. Hopefully tomorrow I can figure this out a bit better.

In other news, responses to the email have been positive for the most part and pretty much everyone's been super understanding about the Type-C issue. It's been super difficult to admit that I messed up but everyone being so supportive still is very appreciated.

Finished up a few days of poking with these and trying to troubleshoot, and I've found the following:
 - As I kept cutting the cables shorter, measurements taken at the device connector consistently showed voltage on power and data lines to be ~5v and ~3.3v, as expected.
 - The masterkeys pro L continued to work with the cable on my personal computer through every adjustment while the phone did not. Using the cable on another computer with the same pro L did not work to my surprise.
 - Disconnecting the data lines allowed the phone to charge off the computer port while before it would not charge when detected as a malfunctioning device, indicating that power delivery is not the issue.
 - Cutting the cable down to the ends of the coiled section, as far as is feasible to cut it down to, did not allow the phone to connect.

Unfortunately, this has all led to this conclusion: I cannot guarantee that these cables will work with any combination of cable length and devices connecting via Micro. The masterkeys that I tested with, or the ports on my pc, or a combination of the two appear to be a fluke somehow. Unfortunately I just don't know enough apparently to understand why this isn't working. I think it may have to do with the larger conductors used, resulting in resistance issues in the data lines, but I don't understand why this would be an issue with some Micro devices and not other, and not Mini or even plan B devices that I've tested.

I apologize for failing yet another part of this GB. Those that ordered Micro cables will receive an update email about the cables not working and an opportunity to switch to Mini or a refund.

Right now I'm going through the Canada orders and should have them soon depending on responses to the email about the proxy situation changeup.

TBH, I bought these exact cables for multiple uses aside from keyboard (phone/device charging) and they do not even come close to comparing to the OG Coil. I've got this potato gallery for comparisons: https://imgur.com/a/6vZLxKa.

Also, FWIW, that link is to the V1 version of the KPRepublic coil cable, which is short on both the USB-A and USB-C end, whereas V2 has a long straight section of USB-A end so you can get coil to presumably lay parallel to the top of your board for that aesthetic.

Alright, update time, and I'm sure it's going to be a pretty spicy one all said and done.

Firstly, Aus proxy order is being packed up and shipment to the proxy will be invoiced either later today or tomorrow depending on how stuff lines up. There's actually only three orders going to Aus, so I'll compare pricing with and without the proxy and pick the cheaper one for those due to the small number of orders.

Unfortunately the PayPal disputes have started coming in to cancel orders. I'm perfectly fine with people wanting a refund and I've so far been prompt to send them when requested, imo, but starting a dispute when I've had recent contact with you and you know I'm easy to get ahold of and willing to refund is just unnecessary, takes more effort, and gives me a history of disputes. Because we are unfortunately approaching the 6 month mark for PayPal protections and I foresee more disputes if I don't make some changes as well as going over that point on still quite a few orders, here's the current plan:

 - Refund all current orders that aren't ready to do shipping invoicing
 - Keep everyone's current spot in the queue unless they want out entirely
 - I continue working through the queue in the same order I have been
 - When an order is ready I re-invoice for payment alongside the shipping invoice

This means that payments will no longer go beyond the 6mo point and shipping address updates can be applied easier, and the occasional issue of invoices not being paid will be easier to deal with. Theoretically the time to complete the remaining orders will remain the same, though budget96 and GMK Phantom fulfillment will eat into that time somewhat.

I'll be sending an email to everyone with a remaining order in the next couple days outlining the plan and letting them know how to go about letting me know of any address updates or if they want to modify/cancel their order at this point. I know this isn't a perfect solution to the problem of how delayed this GB is, but when speeding up production isn't a viable answer, this is what I can do to try to improve the situation for everyone with money involved.

Still have not received any refund or invoice for shipping for my two cables. :(

If you're one of the people that didn't respond to the email I sent out, I was giving everyone a little bit more time to choose to respond or not before going through with the refunds. I'm looking to send out the last of the refunds the end of this week.

Ah I see. I responded about a week ago because I didn't see that last line about replying initially. I got a little anxious from not hearing anything back.  :-\

I didn’t reply in time and got a refund. What does that mean for my order?
I don’t want to cancel.

Noticed it'd been awhile so wanted to comment that I'm still steadily working my way through orders inbetween packing Phantom for shipping and working on budget96, among other projects.

I don’t want to cancel.

Your order is currently cancelled, but you'll have a chance to get back into the queue once current orders are finished.

Surely you don’t mean I need to submit a whole new order from scratch again?

Your email gave the impression it was just a temporary refund while preparing orders, there was no clear indication you intended to kick people off the list and completely cancel orders if they didn’t respond.
The email made it sound like “respond if you want to cancel”.
I just want the cables I ordered, don’t mind waiting, but cancelling my order is ridiculous and a huge pain. I can’t even remember all the details I specified now.
Seems silly to go from having submitted an order so long ago and now being told “sorry no cables for you unless you’re lucky enough to snag leftovers lol”
Would really appreciate just being left on the list. Chuck on and extra $10 if you want. Just want my order with minimal messing about. Shouldn’t be this hard? Feel screwed over by this. Automatic order cancellation is wrong, just want to pay up and receive what I ordered.

Firstly, I should have said this in the last post and wasn't thinking hard enough at the time, anyone that was part of the original orders and has cancelled or refunded will have priority on extras over "new" orders for them, so you won't have to be "lucky enough to snag leftovers", particularly when there's quite a few cables that are looking to be available at this point due to cancellations, refunds, etc. Your order information is still available to me if you're wanting to order the exact same thing, but this is also giving you a chance to adjust your order if desired.

Secondly, and no disrespect towards you, but I would like to point out the second to last section of the email I sent out:
(https://i.imgur.com/3oqm8qc.png) (https://i.imgur.com/3oqm8qc.png)
Where I explicitly stated that non-response would be taken as refund and cancellation. I'd also like to point out that I gave three weeks between when I sent the email and when I finally processed the refunds for non-response.

And yes, I agree that none of this should be this hard, I've been yelling that every time I've run into issues with making these cables and unfortunately it hasn't made it any easier on my end. I'm trying to make the best of the situation even when just cancelling all orders and walking away from this is such a tempting thought.

I honestly interpreted that part of the email as “you’ll be put to the back of the queue if you don’t respond or you can explicitly ask to cancel if you wish” the wording of it doesn’t jump out to me as “respond or lose your order completely”. But fair enough I’m not arguing that now. Just perhaps try to make that sort of thing more unquestionably obvious in future.
After I briefly looked over the email I thought I was all good to just go back to waiting and didn’t think about it again.

Sorry for coming off so harsh, I’m letting my own problems get the better of me.
Thanks for running the gb, I’m sure it’s causing you no end of stress and taking up much of your time.
I’ll try to keep an eye on the thread for updates, but an email notification would also help a lot when you’re ready.

The last of the orders that chose to not be refunded were finished Friday, aside from one that's sitting with the EU proxy orders. The next orders up on the block are the beginning of the refunded orders; a few US orders that were delayed due to C issues, EU proxy orders, and Asia orders. I'm hoping to have these out in a reasonable amount of time, but right now dealing with issues in other GBs, the holiday season, and some personal issues are a bit of an impedance I'm trying to work through.

Hey Donut, If I reverse my coil will it lose all its elasticity? Have you tried with any? I want to use it on a keeb with usb on the right side and have the coils go down/left. I saw a vid how they made old telephone cords theyd wrap and heat the coil to set, but then reverse it to give it its springyness, like when you get a kink but do the whole thing.

I cannot say for sure, but I would expect it to have *some* impact on springiness. If your order had a "normal" length L1 then there should be enough flex on that end to plug it in then just flip the coiled bit either over or under to get it laying the direction you want. I tried to make most of the Mini connectors sideways to the coils so they could lay either direction, but the bulkiness of the conductors made it so they had to align with how they were facing at that point in the cable.

Oh yeah its no issue getting it the right direction. I want it to come out on the right and coil downwards instead of upwards, hence wanting to reverse the coil direction. Any chance you have a broken one to test on?? :P I'm thinking they may retain their spring since the cable is round.

For everyone's info, the og coil cables take very well to reversing coil direction. This is if you want the coil to go upwards or downwards when coming out of the keyboard from the left or right. I reversed the entire cable so It would coil down, when coming out of my keyboard and going left across my desk. The coil retained its full elasticity. Tight as ****.

I'm working on the EU orders currently, but since they're through a proxy you won't see anything about them until all of them are ready for shipment and I figure out the bulk shipping cost.
