Goodwill find! Model M on its 25th birthday!! (29SEP89)
« on: Mon, 29 September 2014, 12:16:33 »
My school has a split campus, and I have a few hours between classes. So I always stop at the GW right next to the first campus. Today I lucked out!! Its grungy with cigarette burns, but its nearly intact. Only missing one keycap and two rubber feet on the bottom. But seems to be in full working condition (I'm typing on it right now and yes I'll be washing my hands..). But I just realized a pretty cool coincidence... Today is September 29th, 2014. The birthday of this keyboard is 29SEP89!! Making it 25, TODAY!

I found the crumpled up receipt in the car just for some extra proof.

Lucky find.

Goodwill stores in the North Georgia Region do not sell any computer gear.

A manager told me that it was due to pressure from "proper" computer stores not to "compete" with them.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

I don't have the tool to pop it apart, hopefully will today. Just before washing my hands I plugged it in and typed. Didn't seem to have any issues.

Happy birthday Model M!

Nice :)

I sometimes wonder how many of today's keyboards will still work in 25 years time.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
