KB5034441 [Social commentary]

(1/1)

tp4tissue:

So, This microsoft update has been failing since January.  It does not automatically resolve, and microsoft has not fixed it.

The reason is the recovery partition on most windows 10/11 installs is only ~500MB, KB5034441 requires more than that to install, short of 700MB, the update will fail Every Single Time. You have to manually repartition the recovery partition, which 99% of normal humans don't know how to do.

This causes an NT service to continuously run in the background. Tp4 has observed that it runs the CPU at ~10% @ 20watts.

Let's assume 2 watts.  There are 1.4 Billion windows 10/11 machines, assume 30% of them fails this update continuously.

Conservatively, 2 watt * 1.4Bil * 0.3 = 840,000,000, About 840 Megawatt. In 7 months, this cost 1.3x the yearly power (2020 base) generated by the Hoover Dam. From this 1 Failed Update.

And this is only counting the power consumed by the NT service, If we count also the NET rise in CPU voltage, its actual cost is ~8 watts over idle of ~12watts. Which means 5.2x Hoover Dams Yearly power.

And This is still happening. This planet is wasting somewhere between 2x to 5.2x hoover dams RIGHT NOW because of a stupid update. This is the conservative estimate, it's probably more.
