By that logic, SmallFry should've been kicked a long time ago for his Monday night meebcast advertising. I'm not saying that we don't like meebcast, just seems super harsh.

Multiline flooding is pretty bad irc netiquette, particularly in channels with any significant amount of users, and especially when it's an unauthed nick that the moderators may not have knowledge of. A plain kick is a fair warning in my experience, and there are plenty of places where this would have been an instant ban for a certain period of time. I'm rather biased for IRC (not #geekhack specifically, but in general) being one of the last few bastions where one can have sane discussions in real time. That said, there's plenty of 'horseplay' that happens by long time regulars including myself that perhaps have had a bit of better idea built up over time on what is okay and what isn't.

Now git off my lawn, all ya'll youngins.

Disclaimer: I don't speak for nor represent the IRC channel.

Oh, I missed the second half of that in IRC. Really, I can understand the want to keep the channel SFW, but I feel the moderation in the GH channel gets a bit silly sometimes. Then again, my view of IRC is sorta opposite of Parak's view; I see IRC as the place I go when I expect people to post links to some of the weirdest stuff on the net and where people can act a bit silly.

Although if someone disrupts an actual serious conversation then a kick might be in order, although in this case I feel mod reaction was way over the top; it was a single occurrence of slight spam(I don't count the second one as that would never have happened had the mod not got up in arms the first time). Had it happened several times over the course of several minutes then the kick would have been appropriate.
Normally it wouldn't have bothered me, but this isn't the first time the mods have been a bit over-zealous.

1) A forum admin has stated on May 24 that the channel is no longer officially associated with the forum - as such please discuss Channel Operator issues with one of the other currently active Channel Operators. As of 2013-06-01 they are kishy, dfj and oqsy.

2) vun, the issue with multiline spamming is not related to the goal of keeping the channel SFW. Since a fair number of regulars access the channel at work, NSFW content is not welcome, but that is still irrelevant to multiline spamming, which as Parak stated is poor form. The SFW requirement, I should add, also has nothing to do with language/wording preferences, and as a general rule it is expected that you may find 'coarse' or 'adult' language in the channel - this is also generally not an issue so long as it isn't resulting in people coming to me asking that something be done.

3) esoomenona, as stated before your ragequit, I have no problem with you, but I have a problem with spam in the channel. Even IF I had a problem with you, I wouldn't use op privileges against you on that basis alone. As before, you're welcome in the channel, just don't spam.

By that logic, SmallFry should've been kicked a long time ago for his Monday night meebcast advertising. I'm not saying that we don't like meebcast, just seems super harsh.
I will stop that now I suppose. Sorry to those offended.

Not to derail but I honestly can't find meebcast without your macro so don't stop :D

I didn't realize that #Geekhack and GeekHack weren't related. Was there a time when the two were associated?

I never implied that spamming is nsfw, I just stated that I understand that part of the channel rules as a side note.

I also understand that you don't want people spamming the channel as this can be disruptive to conversation(although keep in mind that there wasn't really any other conversation at the time), but it feels a bit unnecessary to tell someone to bugger of after a minor case of this. Had you not said anything and then observed that he kept spamming after that one incident then I would agree that a kick would be justified.

And yes, I am aware that he did spam again and that's what got him kicked, but the second case I feel was provoked and a response to an unnecessarily harsh remark.

Just my 2 cents, it's your channel and you choose how to run it, I just felt it was worth noting my points here, as I feel the moderation in the channel often seems to kill off what would in some other channels be seen as light-hearted and joking conversation.

Yes, iMav started the channel originally quite some time ago (when we were on the version of vBulletin prior to the version that was exploited severely enough to justify the move to SMF). In recent discussion of whether IRC channel rules/guidelines should be published together on geekhack.org, it was revealed that the admin team has severed the official ties to the channel. It is of course still the same community in terms of theme and userbase.

As for this 'meebcast' that SmallFry is in some way connected to...I haven't seen it, nor heard of it, so it must happen when I'm not around. I haven't had any reports of it being a problem, FWIW.

Through informal previous discussion I've been informed of some spammy-type issues from esoomenoma previously, but never directly witnessed them. In this case, I did.
Indeed perhaps something better than 'bugger off' might have been helpful to him, but it was just a kick, not a ban. Relevant clarification was provided upon his return.

As for 'my' channel...I don't think of it that way. It's the community's to use, and the ops are just there for quality control I guess.

Part of the issue with spam and excessive off-topic discussion is that it can actually discourage on-topic discussion, since there appears to be no way to slip it into the mix...but as GH as a forum and channel has pretty much always had a huge off-topic element, I'm not going to try to stop that, since it isn't a problem...usually.

If the IRC and forum have no official association then I do not see why there is a link to the IRC in the menu bar.

I think that's because it has been said on numerous occasions there will not be a chat feature on the website itself; "use the IRC channel" is the historical answer to that request.
By your logic, the channel shouldn't be #geekhack anymore, and there should be no straightforward way for the members of this community to find it.

Well I think at a minimum there should be a disclaimer in the header when a person joins the IRC that simply says it is not 'officially associated' with geekhack.org, because until you stated that fact above seems like most people thought they were.

I said nothing about not having a #geekhack irc channel and I'm sure for most of the people who get on IRC they are well aware how to do it without clicking a link, or maybe not, I'm more familiar with the days of using mIRC etc.

Fair enough. Though, the admins would need to add a local page on this site first saying that, then redirecting to the freenode web IRC.

You can of course use whatever client you want, but I think the web IRC is linked because a lot of people don't know what IRC is anymore so it's more similar to web chats as used on many sites.

Lol omg. Someone got kicked on IRC. The had to retype /join #geekhack
The horror of over a dozen keypresses.

Seriously, a kick on IRC is really just to get someone's attention. It's not something so serious to create a thread or have any lengthy discussion on the matter.
