I've never had a full set of POM but I do have a few single caps. They feel like slicker ABS caps imo. And they seem to already have a bit of shine because of the material properties.

My PBT caps seem to keep their texture better than my ABS caps though.

has anyone had issues with desoldering leds on a poker?  i'm having one hell of a time with it.  flux, wick, pump nothing is working right.

Try tinning your tip first. Put some solder onto the tip. Make it almost silver and then touch it to the joint. I also prefer wicks.

yeah its tinned.  im only getting the solder thats on the surface not inside the hole.  hmmm

Gotta use something that "sucks" :P  Also get some flux on there.  It will prevent oxidation with the reheat and it helps to distribute heat too.

Try adding more solder, then using the pump. That's been the only method that works for me. Just get a big glob of solder melted on there, then suck it with the pump. Should bring the stuff up through the hole.

Yes but you need to cut them off or else they won't fit in the pcb

or you mean like use a plate on a pcb mounted board?

Unless the PCB has those holes. :P The Phantom PCB for example.

And KMAC.  Has the PCB mount holes even though it is plate mount. I design my own boards that way, too.  Keep those options open!

Plated board with PCB switches and a proper PCB to accept them is a very solid keyboard to type on.  Even more solid when you stick it in a 8lb case like the 456GT  :)

Couple questions

1.   Anyone here have any affiliation with or know how to get in contact with http://www.originativeco.com/?   Reason for asking is I was wondering about their SSL status when placing an order as the other day I was at the checkout page and noticed the page was not secure so I backed out.  I then went to their facebook page and asked about this and have not heard any response back.

2.  How do the different weight springs on that site compare to the springs in clears and browns?

3.  Also would like to know how many springs come in an order from that site.

4.  If their SSL issues don't get sorted out does anyone know where I can get a set of keys for TKL board with the two tone grey theme similar to the ones at orininatice but with custom legends on the front of the key for the function layer I am currently in the process of attempting to build?

5.  When desoldering a key on my Phantom board I accidently ripped the small copper pad off the side of the board between the PCB and the plate.  Will this cause the board/key to never work again or can do I not need to worry about this as it was only the pad on the once side of the PCB?

I'm at work right now so I can't get on originativeco to look up your other questions. But you can message the guy who runs it here on GH. His name is Sherryton. You can also find him in his vendor subforum.

2) Browns have a 45cN actuation force w/ a peak at 55cN. Clears are 55cN actuation with a 65cN. 1 cN is about 1 gram of force. And I believe the Korean springs count the peak actuation. So browns are 55g and clears are 65g.

3) I can't find pictures or any amount. I'd PM sherryton. He's usually quick to respond on GH. The word is there should be 100 springs per pack.

4) Sounds like you might have to snag a WYSE keycap set and then see if WASD keyboards can put custom legends on the caps. WYSE can be found in GH and DT classifieds I think. I believe I recently saw some for relatively cheap in the GH classifieds. Custom legends I'm a bit fuzzy on.

Those look like relegendable keycaps. I believe they have and ABS base with a Polycarbonate overcap. You can either find an old board that has them and salvage them, such as that Heathkit H9 or Cherry Point of Sales keyboards. You can also find them at Signature Plastics. Check out this link and this link.

Here we go:

I'm curious about how durable the springs are in Cherry MX switches.

Do heavier keys like metal ones(1x1, backspace, space bar) wear out springs quicker?

By wearing out I mean is does it ever come to a point where a switch spring can't hold the keycap up any more and it just rests in the pressed down position on its own?

Part 2:

Do stabilizers add more weight to a key? I mean cherry stabilizers rest in the down position. You push the keycap down onto the stab +'s and then the switch pulls the stabilizer up, does this add weight?

Reason I ask is I didn't like the feel too much of my left shift when I was gaming. Tried some lube, still didn't like the feel.

So basically I took the 2 stems and the metal wire out of the stabilizer and left the part that the key actually lands on in. I put o-rings on all three stems of the shift key so it has a nice landing on the switch and the  landing part of the stab, and stuck it back on. Feels amazing now but I'm starting to worry about if the shift keycap weight might were out the spring? They are cherry blacks.

Am I committing switch suicide? If not I'm considering doing this to all my stabilized keys(except space bar) if not.

Thanks!

Cherry MX switches are tested to last for 50 million actuations.  I doubt the weight of the keys makes any difference at all.  They always go back to the same position regardless.

The only problem I see is that your switch is no longer stabilized, so if you hit the key off-center, it will not depress evenly.  Still probably won't damage the switch, it just won't feel right.

Feels amazing compared to before and its nice sounding.

This has been asked several times, but essentially...

Key set       ->   needs this kit       ->   for these boards
key set with old-fashioned 1.5x mods/off-center caps -> moogle kit -> modern board (Filco, etc)
key set for modern filco-type board -> tsangan kit -> old-fashioned board (cherry, KMAC, etc)

So ...

Old keyset on new keyboards needs moogle.
New keyset on old keyboards needs tsangan.

If it is roughly accurate that will be easy for me to remember.  Thanks for the fast reply.

Yep, that's pretty much it.  Although tsangan kits are needed for more than old boards.  Many Korean custom boards also need them.  Usually you can just look at the mods for a good rule of thumb.

If you need some 1.5x mods/7x space to get your key set to fit on your board, you need a tsangan.
If you need some 1.25x mods/6.25x space to get your keys to fit on your board, you need a moogle.

Or if people simply stopped calling them nicknames and say 1.25 kit, 1.5 kit... there would be less confusion since it is literal.

Clears are 55cN actuation with a 65cN.

I thought clears had a 65cN actuation force w/ peak of 80cN. I'm asking, not stating :)

I think that's for light gray/dark gray/green switches. Clear springs are very close to blacks.

Clear spring actuate at 65cN, but bottom out is 100cN according to Cherry datasheet. So while actuation force is close to black, bottom out is lighter at 80cN.

Sadly those are missing nice graphs in the datasheet. If you look more towards the end on the pages that are sideways it does give the operating forces, but not the bottom out.
