Totally a potato when it comes to woodworking, but what type of finish will these be? Matte or gloss?

matte.  The form is supposed to be closed, but I'll do it tomorrow, so order now if you want it.
I'm cool with matte, thanks!

Entered my form a week ago  :thumb:

You can't tell litster by his wood species preference?  Come on!

yeah, I should have known ;)

(if a mod happens by, would you mind removing my email addy from the above quotes? Hate to make things too easy for the spambots, right?)

Dang, sorry about the email.  I glossed right over it.

Almost matte (technically "Satin"), so it still has some sheen without being a fingerprint magnet.

Dang, sorry about the email.  I glossed right over it.

No worries!

Hey all - chatted with alienman earlier, and I'll be sending out invoices for the GB shortly so we can get materials ordered this week.

Again, shipping will be invoiced a bit later once we have final weights & sizes for the packaging - thanks!

All invoices are out - check the item detail on yours and make sure I've got you down for exactly what you ordered. My invoice totals and the order totals all matched up exactly, so I'm pretty confident I got it all in there, but let me know before paying if there's any problem with your invoice.

TLDR; if you ordered a wrist rest, you should now have an invoice waiting for you :thumb:

So it begins!

Thanks to everyone who's already paid, we've got all the wood ordered. The red oak was in stock and arrived at the shop Friday. The exotics should arrive in the next two weeks.

Invoicing update: All but 6 have been paid, with 3 days left until the April 8 cutoff. If you haven't seen your invoice and should have one, please check your email and/or let me know ASAP!

All materials have been ordered and production has begun - here's an older shot showing the CNC roughing step on a Padauk blank and lots of Walnut carnage chips surrounding the area:

Update: Still 3 invoices outstanding.  If this is you, please get on it!

If we don't get confirmation, you run the risk of missing out completely (and probably won't get the bulk pricing discount, if I can squeeze your order in).

Got it, thanks! And it would have to be - I just don't see how you can top the VE.A for classiness, especially with a nice rest :D

Well, those 3 remained unpaid (4 sets) - which is a bummer since I had split my pre-production costs across all orders. Those are costs that will have to come out of future sales, but it's not the end of the world. We won't name any names, but please stick by your commitment if you order these small-scale group buys with shared costs - it hurts if you back out after invoices are set and sent out.

Sneak peek at an "ebonized oak" set in progress - first finishing pass, these will be nearly black when finished:

Sucks to hear that.

I am generally not a fan of oak's grain pattern but damn, you really seem to know what you are doing

Thanks! With this project, every surface gets machined, so I can't really know what I'm getting until it's 90% complete. There's some guessing and imagination involved in selecting and lining up pieces since I don't have xray vision ;)

Materials update: Wenge and Zebrawood orders arrived at the shop from Seattle.

One of the Wenge planks was really, really light in color, I'm going to try to exchange that one - it's just not what you expect when you think "Wenge".

The other has a massive crack across right in the middle but otherwise looks nice. I may be able to work around the cracked area without wasting too much.

Thankfully, the Zebrawood plank they sent is just beautiful!

Thanks all! And yes (barring any incredibly unfortunate series of events), I will have all orders finished and packed for shipping by June 1.

I say "packed", since the actual shipping requires another round of (much smaller) invoices and forms for international orders, etc, but we'll try to get all that done in parallel with the production so there's no delay between "ready" and "shipped".

Boring status update: I re-worked my machine fixture & mounting-hole-drilling jigs to be more precise for aligning the stock for the styles involving inlays. The new jig uses the bottom edge of the rest as its origin for locating the holes, instead of the inside edge as before. This ensures that the inlay is consistently positioned and angled relative to the fixture, which the CNC uses as its origin reference. Totally boring, but will speed up production now that I'm really getting into the multi-wood styles.

In other news, I got the replacement Wenge board - it is dark & beautiful. Almost 12" in width (I ordered 7.5" min), it's so heavy it takes two guys to move it. I'll grab a photo once it's up on the cutting table.

Looking good for the 100% wenge rests!

OMW to the shop now, I'll get an update together for Saturday at the latest with shiny photos.

Quick version: making progress here with the usual minor problems being worked around.  completion of all orders will probably slip to the second week of June but I'll try to get orders in the mail as they're ready. Expect more Saturday!

Zebra + Wenge all joinered/planered/squarered and ready for glue up

The ends of this section all split *after* I had everything joined, planed and ready for glue up.  :'(
(which is scary because it looked perfect when I rough cut it a couple days ago, you can't trust natural wood to stay still)

Only 3 left to cut and machine! I was putting this off until I could say they were all done, but it's time for an update - thanks for your patience!

I'm about 50% through the finishing process on the others. I plan to have ~90% of orders shipped by the 21st, but there may be a few stragglers depending on final inspection and shipping details/invoices.

Anyone else want a Ebonized Oak set that wasn't able to get in on the GB?

Might hold onto it for other split boards, or if I ever buy a VE.A =)

Production update

Zebrawood, Walnut, and Oak styles are all machined, hand-shaped, and sanded - I'm applying the finish coatings on those whenever my hands start to cramp up and need a break from the Wenge styles...

Wenge is hard. It likes to split, gives you splinters if you even look at it wrong, and it is literally just plain hard. Hand-shaping all edges, securing small splits, and cleaning up corners has taken up many nights the last week, and I still have two more full nights of sanding at this rate. (and two more Wenge+Padauk units to glue & machine, had to chase down some more wood without buying an entire board)

I have non-negotiable break for a trip to California for a wedding the 22nd-30th, but I'm busting my butt to get as many ready-to-ship before then (the finish has to be completely cured before I pack them up, so we'll see). The second wave (all remaining orders) will be out the door by July 10.

To be realistic there's still details around shipping I haven't set in stone yet, so worst case the "second wave" is actually all the orders. Thanks for your patience everyone!

Might hold onto it for other split boards, or if I ever buy a VE.A =)

Bummer... if it makes you feel any better, I haven't found one I can afford either! These have a big enough platform to fit many other split boards though; even an ergodox if you don't mind it looking goofy :D

Don't forget to keep mine raw & unfinished tho pls ;)

You got it, and I'll put a couple test scraps in the box also. I'm happy to put a single coat of wax-free shellac just as a sealer if you want also.

Hey man great to meet you at Key Con!  I'll see about Ben making a set for you!

You too man! That 5000 is the reason I had to buy a VE.A in the first place. So nice.

That'd be great, no big deal if not but I figured I'd ask.

Hey all - still alive, still in progress. Family life gets complicated and work crunch/catch-up from the trip away have made it difficult.

Lately I've been having trouble with the finish getting runs/drips on the vertical edges, which have made for a lot of frustrating extra time spent sanding and refinishing. Not sure if it's the warm weather, extra humidity, or what, but I'm still trying to figure it the best process to work around this without adding several finish>wait>sand>repeat cycles... really tedious.
