What DPI/Sensitivity have you guys been using lately?
« on: Sun, 30 April 2017, 21:48:54 »
It doesn't seem a thread has been made about this (at least lately.) I was somewhat curious what DPI/Windows sensitivity you all use for day to day use. Everywhere else I've seen this question asked it turns into an argument about what sensitivity is the best. I use windows sens 6/11 with 1200 dpi (steel series rival). I used to use 400 dpi when I played more games such as counter strike but I'm finding it more convenient to use a higher sensitivity for standard use. I don't know know how sensitivity functions with older mice so I'm sorry if this question doesn't cover any of you stone age mouse users  :p

I believe it's around 5800 DPI, with 1000mhz refresh.
Keep in mind though, in Linux, 5800 is equal to about 7400 in Windows.

However, I turn down the sensitivity in the OS to increase the precision and disable the OS acceleration, which ends up being about the same as using around 6500 at default settings in Windows.

1000 DPI, running Mac OS X. My mouse has a DPI button so I can adjust it between 600/1000/1600. Generally always have it at 1000.

I dunno if what I'm saying is true... but I've recently moved from the Avior 7000 (PWM 3310) to the G403 (PWM 3366) and I now use my mouse at LOWER sensitivity. It went back from 3200-3000 to 2400 for regular / drawing illustrator etc and for FPS / osu / aimbooster 1600.

I have the impression that giving large swings, going from left to right of the screen, I need lower dpi on the G403 for some reason. Like somehow the sensor picks up faster like "oh we swinging now? here we gooo". And yes, I have and had mouse smoothing / acceleration off.

The number (DPI) alone means nothing.

I have a 30" screen estate w/ 100 dpi. My mouse (w/ PWM 3310/3360) is set to 1200-1600 dpi, and there are no sensitivity/acceleration adjustments. Thus, I can cross the screen by moving the mouse ca. 5 cm. Meanwhile, my larger trackball (Kensington Slimblade) is stuck at 400 dpi, but I use software acceleration to cross the screen with a single flick.

I don't use MS Windows.

Yeah in practice I don't really see the point of such screens. 1080 Ti already struggles keeping up 100+ Hz @ QHD with everything on ultra. So what's the point of these screens?

Vendors want to make money, obviously. Specs on paper bring semi-informed customers.

Unfortunately, neither specs on paper, nor unboxing videos say anything about flicker and other quality/usability problems.

Just use the DPI that gives you a good result on the desktop starting at 6/11 in Windows.
I'm at 800DPI on 1440p. But I can imagine some would prefer 1200 at that size.
You could then adjust it in games if you want, but actually ~1.0 @800DPI happens to feel pretty good in CS, which is probably the game I'm most picky with my settings in.

To a point, you are correct, however it's an easy way to compare.

Something to note, and this elaborates on my settings a bit.
Software acceleration is fine for general computing. While you cross one screen in 5cm, I cross dual 25in 1080p screens in less than half of your movement, and with (near) pixel level precision.  If I used the settings you do, I would see jumps of 5-7 pixels or more and that just leads to insanity inducing levels of frustration when doing photo or CAD work.

yess... it aint out yet so we cannot know for sure for now. I think ulmb will dissapoint. I have never seen a proper implementation so far. sounds more marketing to me. I mean perhaps they can turn out backlight locally, but you would still have ips glow that also makes black appear grey.

blacks appearing grey is ok for me, because as long as you have lighting behind the monitor, it compensates for the glow.

The greatest problem is ULMB..

ULMB requires very high brightness flashing whenever we turn down the persistence rate.   the shorter the flash, the more clear the Motion quality.

However, the shorter the flash, the less bright the image..

So that flash has to be super bright..   This is the main hold back..

An entire array of super bright leds plus driver are going to cost 3 to 400 and might require active cooling.

Have been using 800 DPI for as long as I can remember. Dead-middle on Windows sensitivity, as I've read that not having it right in the middle can make your mouse really inconsistent.
I have many friends that use insanely high DPIs because they think it's better, completely ignoring that the huge majority of pro FPS players use 400 or 800  :D :D
It's not that I want to be a pro or that I think I am one, but I've gotten comfortable using those settings and I definitely think low sens + big mousepad has improved my ability to play FPS games.
I'd probably use a bit higher if I played MOBA or RTS games, though. I'd also consider using a higher DPI when browsing, but I use a ZOWIE FK1+, and the DPI can't really be adjusted except when the mouse is just turning on, so I just roll with 800.

At work, I use a Logitech MX Master, but I've never installed the software for it, so whatever the default DPI on it is, I use that.

Yeah in practice I don't really see the point of such screens. 1080 Ti already struggles keeping up 100+ Hz @ QHD with everything on ultra. So what's the point of these screens?

For me the point of such a screen is that reading text on it, which is what I spend most of the time doing, for example coding or reading/writing e-mails, would be more pleasant.  My current mobile phone has 1440 x 2560 on a 5.3" screen and the text is always looks smooth and clear.  The same is not true of 1920x1080 on a 24" screen even at over 3' away.  Anti-aliasing helps but it is not perfect.

So for that, I am not especially interested in how quickly the screen refreshes or how fast things draw as long as the image persists sufficiently between refreshes that the whole screen does not appear to flicker that is fine.

Back to the question I am trying a new trackball, a Kensington Orbit with Scroll Wheel and I have no idea what DPI it uses.

I am also not sure if it is as meaningful as people suppose.  Assuming the inch here is an inch of mouse movement on the desk, in the early days of mice the mouse would report one mickey of movement at the minimum distance the sensor could detect.  That means a mouse with a sensor that can detect smaller movements would report more mickeys for the same amount of movement on the desk, i.e. higher DPI.  That means if you can achieve the necessary precision with your fingers you should be able to move the pointer faster, because you are having to traverse less space on the desk, but with the same precision as before.  However, as soon as the marketing departments at the manufacturers find that people think higher DPI is better the people developing the product will be put under pressure to increase DPI without increasing cost and sooner or later someone will have the idea of just reporting 5 mickeys of movement for the smallest movement the sensor can detect and, if that mouse was previously 400 DPI, marketing it as 2000 DPI.  It would move the pointer at 5x the speed compared to the 400 dpi model but with only 1/5 of the precision and it would not be doing anything that could not be done in software on the PC.

Ever since I got my 3 monitor setup, I started to use the mouse less and less, so the need for dpi dropped. Whatever dpi I pick, swiping between leftmost and rightmost monitor is annoying. My dpi is currently 3000, and that is ok for moving around, but not for, for instance, drawing in illustrator.

I try to rely exclusively on keyboard for window navigation and arrangement, and only use mouse to click buttons in browser, and drawing mostly.

I sit at 800 with no acceleration, and 6/11 in Windows. Mac OS I HAVE to turn off acceleration just because I've gotten so used to it.

I usually run around 1800 dpi with a 2200 dpi quick toggle option. It's for the rare occasion I need more speed  ;)

usually 800 at 6/11 windows sens, or 1800 at 4/11 windows sens :)

there are some exceptions - playing older 2D games for example which have a low resolution like 640x480, they're usually played better at ~400cpi

Logitech G703 with 6/11 in Windows, acceleration on and 1400 DPI.

I use an eDPI of 910 in CSGO (still 1400 DPI, 0.65 sens, raw input on, acceleration off).

Yeah, DPI + Sensitivity needs to be stated. Both effect pointer speed. One should favor a higher dpi and lower sensitivity until the speed is right, or actually, a sensitivity of '1' if it is allowed. This will reduce rounding errors from multiple software rounding stages.

Rounding errors should sum to zero over a long period - they use Bresenham's algorithm. But I agree with the sentiment - my sensitivity is always set to unity.

Your slimblade must be broken, cause both of mine is most definitely 800cpi. But that is also quite disappointing, since the sensors can do 2000. I have an urge every now and then to stick a teensy in at and unleash it's potential.

That doesn't follow in any way, and I would argue that there is probably something else that is "broken".

Kensington Slimblade has been around for almost a decade; all four of mine had 400 cpi (measured after making sure that there was no sensitivity/acceleration manipulation in software, while using a completely different software environment as a control).

I also wonder how you would place a Teensy inside, unless chassis modification/replacement is an option.

Yeah I was trying to politely put it to you that your measurements are wrong. I did my own tests, verified that they are correct with known specimens, and they show 800 cpi, so there is something wrong with your measurements.

Turns out that I am a moron and you are correct, now I am even more disappointed in this product. But that is more incentive to hack it open.

I see plenty of space inside for a teensy. But modifying the chassis was not ruled out as a possibility.

I'd think that pairing the Teensy to an optical or laser sensor would be a bit of a hurdle (*DIY sensor packages have been spotted in the wild). Although, I wouldn't mind glimpsing some teensy mouse projects if anyone has the links.

I have seen those. I do not think that it would be too difficult, the datasheet for the adns-7550 in the kensington is readily available. What might be a problem is what you discover when you try to change the cpi. Some sensors start skipping or doing strange things once you up the resolution, and never really work reliably at the claimed top resolution.

But back on topic. I tend to change CPI quite a lot, depending on mostly my own orientation - usually between 1200, 2400 and 3600.

Welp, if you ever figure out the teensy talking to the existing sensor part (fully) send me a PM once you've posted the work log :thumb:.  Seems like you've got it dialed in pretty well.

Yeah in practice I don't really see the point of such screens. 1080 Ti already struggles keeping up 100+ Hz @ QHD with everything on ultra. So what's the point of these screens?
I agree completely.

1080Ti in SLI, when the parts are sponsored (or if the client isjust self financing) such builds , even QHD 144Hz becomes a bottleneck for lets say 4 way 1080Ti SLI , so yes for most consumers it is a stretch but for such instances the parts literally demand such screens, and their demand  is enough to justify the price

I'm currently on ~2500 down from ~3200. I've always used super high sensitive my whole life. I thought it was silly if you couldn't reach every corner of your monitor with just the movement of your wrist. Getting into more FPS games I'm trying to gradually move down in sensitivity though.

For dpi, I try to find some golden fleece of nativeness and 1:1. For sens also. No accel. Typically means around 1600.

Back in the old days of 800*600 and 1024*768, I used extremely high sensitivities and accel, which essentially means I wasn't even moving the mouse around, I was only shifting my hand just a little on it. And that was great and much mourned. Obviously can't replicate it in FHD, let alone 4K, nobody has that amount of precision in his hands.

I play around 2800-3000 depending on the game. For many years I had to deal with cramped desk space, which made me get used to making smaller, more precise mouse movements. I have more room available now, but it's just what I'm used to at this point.

For me I like the standard windows sensitivity and 800 DPI on my mouse. I used to go balls to the wall and max my sensitivity but I have since found that it doesn't actually matter very much when you're gaming. More DPI absolutely doesn't guarantee more headshots.

That said, getting around on a 34" panel can be a pain. Current mouse  as of last week is the Finalmouse Air58 (Which due to the lightness alleviates some of the getting around issues), previous was a weighted G500.

It really depends what I'm doing.

Regular work, I have it at about 1600
FPS gaming, 400
Other gaming, varies between 600 and 1200
