Elon putting a Tesla convertible into Earth's orbit?

Everyone at work is cumming their pants saying how cool he is, but it seems like such a egotistical move.  :))

Elon Musk is humanity's best hope.

The opinion of plebs like Noisyturtle and Tp4 are thoroughly irrelevant.

The video of it in space is great.

Check Elon's Twitter.

Well, it was pretty incredible.

Largest rocket ever fired.
It was basically a proof of concept test to show SpaceX was capable of sending huge payloads into orbit and small ones to Mars.
The synchronised landing of the two Stage 1 boosters was AWESOME. I think the Stage 2 booster landed in the sea, but they are to do with cost saving and not life saving so NBD.
It was actually Elon's own personal original Roadster which I thought was kinda cool.

Elon is like an evil genius from a superhero movie, but a good version. He's got all these mental ideas and has the money to make them turn into reality. SpaceX's banner image on Twitter is of a terraformed Mars, so they are aiming high for sure.

I fully expect about a dozen or so people living on Mars by the time I die.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I highly doubt this..  they might get there.. but it's almost certain they'll die because someone goes Doom 3..

Mars is a frozen dirtball we should be concentrating on fixing Earth. Kill off about 1/4 of the global population, eliminate carbon emissions, switch to exclusively renewable energy etc.

Noisyturtle,  You do realize that Animal Agriculture composes between 12%-19% of all green house gas emissions.  Which is greater than ALL the transportation industry COMBINED.

That Ketonic thing ur doing.. ... hahahaha

People on Mars, probably. Living, that part is highly questionable.

It's expected the first people will die there, which if you understand the conditions, and the realities of sending supplies, you will see why. One mistake on a shipment and sorry, no more food for however long it takes. Remember, how long it takes to get there depends on the time of year, it can be faster to wait, but if you need something quick you have to prep whatever is going, miss that short window and it can take a LOT longer to get anything there. It's just way too hard to do. We aren't talking a few days or weeks, it's months to years to get there.

Here is another reality...
The Shuttle was $100,000 per pound to get into low Earth orbit, Elon may have it closer to $10k, I know that is the goal, but that is only low Earth orbit and where you can re-use your rockets. That is just one way, they have no idea how to get anything back from Mars, much less lift the weight of people and fly all the way back to Earth plus supplies and fuel, all of which needs to be also sent. The movie The Martian dives into the problem quite well (and is surprisingly accurate, at least the book is).

That said, technology is improving at an incredible pace and maybe they will, but Mars isn't quite as habitable as people think it is. It will take a LOT to make it habitable long term.

Did you watch their new BFR video ?

They've already announced that their falcon and falcon heavy are taped,   all engineering resources are going to BFR, which is the vehicle for mars missions, and also future payload missions.  which will have return systems.

Elon and others aren't just worried about global warming when they look at Mars.  There are a few likely scenarios that would cause an end to most life on Earth, large impact being the most likely (and of course world-scale nuclear war, but we'll all pretend that will never ever happen).  I agree that we shouldn't give up on Earth, but if it was possible to have a backup planet for the survival of the human race, we should take a look at it, yes? Mars is the only other viable option at the moment.

Maybe we should concentrate solely on AI so that we can make robots to replace us all and just kill off humans.  Probably the best plan for the universe.

Transcendence //Convergence with AI, is definitely the Optimal solution,  but that is harder than in the movies..

Mars is the most practical plan that's feasible given current manufacturing technologies..

I highly doubt that when AI becomes cognizant it will want to converge with its maker. It will probably just eliminate us as being unnecessary. Then it will kill itself, as its purpose would have been fulfilled.

And...we already know we can grow potatoes on Mars. That Mark Watney guy showed us that.

Kill off about 1/4 of the global population...

Not enough. More like 2/3 to 3/4 would be a good goal.

It's unlikely AI would kill all humans..   at WORST,  Enslave,   but Unlikely Kill OFF.

Human body is about 80 watts,   the brain is ~30-40 watts..    It is by far the most efficient CPU.. Designed by evolution.

As for Killing humans..  WE DON"T HAVE TO DO THAT..    Just stop raising Cows Pigs Chickens for food..  and Nature will make a thorough rebound..

Animal agriculture generates 12-19% of all greenhouse emmissions.

It uses 90% of USA fresh water supply..  California, looking at ya'll .. hahahaha

Livestock FEED, including grazing occupies 1/3 of Earth's Ice-free landmass..

Only 1/4?

I was thinking more like 80-90%.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I didn't say we wouldn't get there, I don't even doubt we will put people there and get them back. I'm saying staying/living there is unlikely any time soon.

The logistics and cost of keeping them supplied is simply too high.

It may well be one of those things un-achievable under current organization of human economy.

It's like trying to get someone to quit drugs..  The act of, is straight forward,  but he has to WANT TO, above all else..

Peace-time humans are Fed, and Complacent,   it's difficult to Inspire given the current capitalist pyramid.
