Hello,I'm a boy from China.This is the first time to come here.
I found most of the people here are fond of the keyboard of IBM,why...confusing...
And in China,we like the Cherry,Filco,Ducky,Realforce more.and about the switch,we discuss the Cherry MX almost.

I want to be a member of you to learn your knowledge about the keyboard,and make some friends to improve my English.(My subject is about English).Is there anyone want an Chinese friend? nacho@live.cn Thanks.:smile:

the old IBM keyboards also had mechanical switches. They aren't built like Cherry/Alps/Topre switches, but instead a buckling spring. Supposedly a lot of fun to type on, but I'll let others attest to that.

I think,the reason of we don't discuss the keyboard of IBM is that most of them are old keyboard,and in China,when PC was popularized,PC had already gave up the IBM mechanical keyboardm,so it's very hard to get one.And we also could get one from the ebay,but the fare is so high that we almost could get a new Cherry or Ducky...

Bingo. (Speaking of new boards, a group buy of Unicomps should drop shipping costs to reasonable levels.)

What's available definitely has a pretty big influence on preferences. Another example (if not quite as drastic as the case of the Model M) is the Compaq MX11800 - these are quite common in the US, and accordingly so are MX brown switches. By contrast, getting ahold of used boards with browns over here in ol' Europe isn't all that easy and they're a moderately exotic switch. In Germany, you're more likely to find something with blues, and boards with blacks are very common.

It's exactly the opposite here. You can find Model Ms for so cheap they don't even matter (I got mine for $20), or you can get new Filcos or Das or the occasional Cherry for $100+; but a Ducky would cost nearly $200, or more.

IBM uses buckling springs which aren't really used in other keyboards. And I like pretty much anything IBM makes.

IBM is god. Model Ms are the best ever. Nothing has been better since, nothing was ever better before. Everything else is junk.

This is generally how I justify my interest in IBM keyboards, though I don't go to this extreme around here. I'd be labeled a troll and cast aside.

Maybe, European and American are stronger then people in Asia, big hands, big foot, big ..... Here, people using IBM model M would easy to be tired.
btw: the salary, we got much more less than u guys, but get the kbd with the same price, realy sucks.

even we have the different salary,the enthusiasm we have for the kbd is the same.I could buy a beloved kbd with breakfast for a month.Just the enthusiasm for the kbd.

Agree that Model M is not very popular in Asia, not even in Japan. Our preference to lighter tactile feedback may be one of the reasons, but the lack of access to it may also be a major reason. Btw: what I have seen in HK is that the spending power of mainland Chinese is so strong.

Well, the Japanese had the 5576 family, some of which were buckling spring models, and appear to be quite popular amongst the Japanese collectors.

Thanks for your information. No doubt that M is a must-have item of keyboard collectors. I am also very interested in it. The M15 with number pad from your link looks awesome. A similar one was just sold at ebay for $539. one of my dream boards.

It was a member here who got that one. I think that's only the second or third M15 with numpad that I've ever seen. They were standard with the M15 from 1995 onwards, but production seems to have ended some time either late in 1995 or in 1996, so they are very rare indeed. It was possible to buy them separately as well.

So $539 is somewhat a reasonable price for such a rare keyboard.

I’m exploring the big world of model M now. I love it, as well as all classic keyboards with unfailing eagerness, not only because of its build quality but also its history, and most importantly it is a rarity now. The Topre boards and some of the original Cherry boards are also my favorites.

Lexmark keyboards remind me of lenovo computers... both try to grapple at IBM yet are inferior and make me mad.
I don't know why people are so crazy for M15 keyboards, so a limited amount were made by LEXMARK and their cheap plastics that yellow:

I think the Model F AT beats the M15 by a million miles. It's springier, better quality, better keys, nice BRUSHED aluminum badge, and isn't cut into two pieces.
