Title: GH Swolenation
Post by: ghostjuggernaut on Fri, 24 July 2015, 16:43:20
We have threads for just about everything on GH.  I have seen people post and thought why not start a gym thread.  I don't have anything specific in mind, but it'd be a great place to share milestones, PR's, advice, or just general OT discussion.

I've been out of the gym for about a year, and just started back up.  Been doing stronglifts to start, until I get my squat/deadlift/bench back where I want it.  I have a long way to go to get back to my old self, but hopefully this will be a nice way of getting there.

Walked into the gym for the first time today.

Came in the door swolle like booker t's WCW days.

Looked around and realized i was the littlest dude in there...

Need roids

Reminded me of this  :))

I started lifting again a bit under a year ago, after neglecting fitness for most of college.  I'm working on getting my bench up, then I might consider entering a local meet for fun  ;D

I've heard that prepping for meets is a huge motivator.  You'll have to let us know how it turns out, and good luck man.  My bench is always my worst area.  I've tried all the techniques and gimmicks, but have come to terms with the fact I will always have a weak bench.

supported thread, gone up from 150lbs to 170lbs in 3ish months, dat bulk son.

work has been killing the gym progress, but at the minimum i make it out to the gym atleast 2 days a week. While keeping the home gym routine going on days i cant make it out.

just broke into squats and have permanent limps whenever i walk now

Awwww, yeah.  Squats are where it's at.  I gotta get back to bulking again.  Maybe another 15ish pounds and I'll hit 200.  I think I'll finally be happy there.  It's not the lifting or the gym time that's hard, at all.  It's the damn eating.  Stuffing that many cals in and counting it all...FML.

I ran track for 7 years, so I'm pretty used to prepping to peak at meets.  As a smaller guy (~135lb), my bench has never been impressive either, but I'll keep working on it  :thumb:

Yeah I have never looked at it that way.  I imagine if you are doing a clean bulk, it adds up fast.

Yup..  Cost is a large hurdle for many people to "get fit".

Yeah, clean bulk is pricey.  No matter how you dice it (see what I did there?) the costs just sort of skyrocket at some point in time.  Dirty bulk is so much easier but then the cutting is just...teribad and so much harder.

Do you guys lift just for aesthetics?  Or because of health?  Job?

I started back in HS, for football.  Then changed to aesthetics.  Now I want to be in shape for my son's when they get a little older and start playing sports.  Getting stronk is just a plus.

I imagine being healthy for your sons in the future is great motivation. :thumb:  I actually find the gym pretty soothing.  Pop some headphones in and zone out for a bit while you lift heavy things.  Or, in Dom's version, curl everything.  Remember, even when you're doing pullups, you're simply pulling the sky down to you with your bi's. :))

Thanks for starting this Ghost!

So I picked up lifting going on 4 years ago but started taking it seriously about 2 years ago. I started off doing more of a bodybuilding style plan but switched to powerlifting because I hated where I was at strength wise. This video is from just over 2 weeks ago and is of my 475 squat. It gave me a 25 pound PR and within just under a year my squat went up 70lbs.

I've been going to the gym for about 2.5 years, I try to go at least 5 days a week. I am not out to get "lean/fit" I'm more about just being strong.

I don't have any crazy high numbers because I go by myself and never max because no spotter. My current flat bench is 130, squat at 200 and no deadline (back issues)

i shed happy tears of whey knowing i have fellow brothers and sisters who worship in the Iron temple at GH as well.

i have fallen off the Iron path for the past two months because of so many excuses that aren't worth anyone's time of day. since coming around, i've picked up another 2 year membership and have started going again.

i've decided to not bulk until i've lost a bit of weight and am in top physical condition. i also want to get down the form before i attempt at climbing the weight ladder again. so with that, I'm starting and ending my routine with cardio, then doing all the major bar exercises (bench, squat, deadlift, rows, shrugs) at ~70%/8-11 sets on their designated days.

once i feel comfortable at all the core exercises, i'll start back up my free weight/machine exercises. hopefully progress comes quick like it usually does when I start after a hiatus.

Oooo a gym thread  ;D

I do a normal four to five day routine. Nothing too crazy, just trying to stay in shape now that I have a kid, work, and school. I'm down to 180lbs right now. I competed nationally in Judo since I was 5 and stopped when I was about 15. Never lifted weights while competing since I always had to make weight. I got interested in wrestling and committed to that throughout high school, didn't take it too seriously, just enjoyed being able to compete in a different sport. When I was a senior I dropped down to 150lbs, preseason weight being about 178lbs. Stayed low the entire season. Barely got into lifting weights, mostly did cario all day everyday (died a little inside). It wasn't until I got out of high school when I was able to finally start lifting. After a year of lifting I managed to get up to a solid 190lbs. Eventually got up to 205 and never been back up there since. I only get about an hour in for the gym before I have to head to work in the morning. Right now I'll super set on days I'm running a little behind schedule and do single isolated workouts on days I have the time.

For anyone looking for workout advice, just switch it up every so often. Everyone's genes are different so certain things are going to work better for others. Also don't be discouraged about results....it takes time! Ex. Wanting to get yolked out, but be huge at the same time (doesn't work that way).

This, so much.  People will swear up and down on a routine or meal plan or whatever but that might only work for them.  You gotta do what's right for you and that gets lost too often in a sea of, "GOTTA GET BIG BRAH".

Before I started working out casually I was a hardcore gamer and swimmer. I was about 108 lbs(yikes)

Some months I was very inconsistent and barely ate/went to the gym at all but I've been very focused on it since I started college.

Here is a comparison pic of nearly 3 years apart(I am no longer a swimmer so noticed how my skin tone literally changed 100 shades) with me from 108 to 143

I since then have gotten fat from the pic on the right because its bulking time!

Never **** myself. I have watched videos of people who have. I have almost puked on many a squat and deadlift though. Just gotta **** before you lift and all is good.

Hey man, everyone has to start somewhere. My friend who is spotting me squatted 550 right before this so I felt weak as **** compared to him but you should never do that. Only compare yourself to who you were. I ran 5x5 for a while and it helped a lot. I also recommend Smolov and Smolov Jr.

Gah this thread makes me so happy.

At 160lbs I was

SQ 280
DL 350
BN 225

All 5x5. I've done SS/SL, Smolov and Smolov Jr. all in the past. Did GOMAD a while back, had knee, back, shoulder and elbow injuries (all unrelated to lifting) and I've learned A LOT about dealing with being skinny and being hurt while still wanting to lift weights.

Currently on a 4day bro split(lol) and it's by far the hardest program I've ever done. My knee is so thankful I don't squat 3-4 days a week anymore tho.

Also probably gonna spend the rest of my life in ketosis so if you got any questions about ANY of this and wanna talk to a real human bean instead Google just hit me up in this thread or PM.

We're all gonna make it..

I've been running a bro split and had to add a full body day just to squat twice a week. I love it too much. Solid total though at 160. I'm looking to hit 1300 soon.
Squat 475
Dead 515 (need to max soon as I  haven't in a while)
Bench 295 (running Smolov Jr again in hopes to hit 315)
Bodyweight 250
Height 6'4"

Dude that's awesome! I added squats to the shoulder day of this split so I could do it twice a week too.

I was super satisfied with what I got from smolov and jr. The numbers can sometimes get complicated cuz most normal gyms don't have fractional weights, so at one point I looked like a kook weighing out how many clips I should put on the bar as well as 2plates lol. But the concept is one of the most sound ideas that humans have ever had: you wanna get better at something? Do it every day.

The results speak for themselves, brehs

Good numbers. Look up Ed Coan's videos with Supertraining on YouTube, he did some really good ones with them. If you know his name, you'll know what I mean, he's a legend.

As for myself, I'm still trying to catch up and feel like I'm not making up lost ground. With work and fatherhood taking up my time, I'm just trying to maintain, especially with another newborn on the way. Even still, I almost had a 455 lb deadlift all the way up, I should have have squeezed my gluten to lock it out.

Good luck everyone! Work hard, get stronger!

I've been hitting the gym a few times a week since I've moved. I've always tried to exercise before that but now I've got access to actual equipment here at the apartment complex. My initial goal was just to get a little stronger and tone my legs/butt area. Though, now that I've started I realize that I love the feeling that get after lifting whether it be leg presses/bench press/situps. Although I absolutely hate cardio and can't stand running or even jogging which is terrible I know.

Now my goal has changed a little, I really wanna get buff like Ronda Rousey so I can look like a total badass:

I feel like I've made progress so far in my legs and what little abs I have so that's a start, but I'm afraid I'm gonna hit a brick wall and not know what to do from there. I'm also thinking maybe I should increase my carlorie intake so I'm not so scrawny, but idk I really know nothing about lifting.  :D

Anyone have their before and after numbers from running smolov? I wasn't going to try it until I hit 300 in my working set so I still have a ways to go.

I find Rousey really attractive.

Change up your program once you feel you plateaued in order to overcome it.

I ran Smolov Jr for bench and got my max up 20 lbs

Thanks for starting this Ghost!

So I picked up lifting going on 4 years ago but started taking it seriously about 2 years ago. I started off doing more of a bodybuilding style plan but switched to powerlifting because I hated where I was at strength wise. This video is from just over 2 weeks ago and is of my 475 squat. It gave me a 25 pound PR and within just under a year my squat went up 70lbs.

https://instagram.com/p/5DvweskfsV/
Good numbers. Look up Ed Coan's videos with Supertraining on YouTube, he did some really good ones with them. If you know his name, you'll know what I mean, he's a legend.

As for myself, I'm still trying to catch up and feel like I'm not making up lost ground. With work and fatherhood taking up my time, I'm just trying to maintain, especially with another newborn on the way. Even still, I almost had a 455 lb deadlift all the way up, I should have have squeezed my gluten to lock it out.

Good luck everyone! Work hard, get stronger!

I love the Supertraining videos. Chris in's squat video was awesome and Ed Coan really is a legend in the sport. His Instagram is a great way to see his lift videos from way back when.

I read "before and after number" and immediately felt like humble bragging ...

Started 2.5 years ago at 320ish lbs current weight is hovering at 220. I've hit my goal of wearing a L/XL, now I've switched to strength training with 20 minutes of cardiovascular each day

Gotta subscribe to that Swolie bible and hit up Biami.  Broscience, son. :))
this made me giggle sent you funny  :p

On a more serious note I have never had problems with maintaining a healthy weight. Unfortunately I'm a smoker (trying to quit) but I still have a good cardio routine and do light strength training. My diet has been the same for the past couple of years with very little deviation. Lots of protein with lots of fruit and veggies. As a female I am not going for the swoll look however I do like a little definition. I do 10min of calisthenics every day and run for 45 min to 1 hour 5-7days a week.

On a side note I noticed a definite energy increase and weight loss when I stopped drinking. I enjoy running thoroughly and my hour run every morning is usually one of the highlights of my day. There's nothing like the feeling you get after a good workout, freshly showered and with some clean clothes on  :thumb:

absolutely when I first started running I would get a stitch all the time. I couldn't run more then 2 miles without getting physically ill and vomiting(I'm pretty sure it had a lot to do with smoking and my alcohol consumption at the time). I started off on a treadmill and worked my way 1/3 or 1/2 mile each week. I stopped running on a treadmill and started running outside around the 5 mile mark.

I rarely get a stitch (intense cramp or side pain) now unless its from not waiting long enough after eating or drinking too much water. It took me awhile to get to this point especially being a smoker but quitting drinking alcohol helped and the rest was just fighting thought the initial pain.

Whoa this thing blew up.  I had no idea it would be this popular

My advice for running as someone who never enjoyed it, ever, you just have to do it.  I know that is the cliche answer, but its the truth.  Once your body is used to it, you will have a much better time at it.  Some things that definitely help, are getting the right shoes.  Whether you decide to go barefoot or nice running shoes, you should find a good running store, and get fitted for shoes.  They have you run and video you, to find out your foot strikes.  This was the one thing that helped me out a lot.  I did the barefoot thing for a long time, and really enjoyed it.  But there is nothing like running in a proper pair of shoes.  And like Sed8 said, best to start out slow, and slowly push yourself further.  Another thing that helped me when i first started a few years ago, run outside.  Treadmills are nice, but they can act like a crutch.  If you map out a nice 3-5 mile loop, and get tired 2 miles in, you have to make a 2 mile trip back.  You can run, run/walk, or walk.  All of which are better alternatives than just stopping.  I will add, that I am not an expert when it comes to running.  These are just things that I found helpful for me.  Anyone feel free to chime in, or correct me, if anything I said was wrong.

This exactly! I hate cardio but if I find myself doing it every day then it gets easier and I get used to it. I definitely recommend Asics for running shoes. They are expensive but worth the money. Treadmills are not the best for running as they don't allow you to get into a natural stride. I mean in the winter you might not have another option but when you can run outside, do it. Concrete is worse for your knees than asphalt but grass is obviously the best. I prefer the elliptical or a spin bike as they are low impact but still provide a great workout. Definitely start slow though. Run for as long as you can, then walk a bit and keep alternating.

Thanks all for the advice! It's really reassuring to read that you also started out with side splitting pains, Sed. It's definitely one of the main reasons I hate running now, but I need to just push through and keep on trying little by little to get where I want to be. Right now in Omaha it's so damn hot and humid outside lately that I haven't been spending time outside exercising so I'm mostly in the gym lifting. There are treadmills in there but like ghost and iamtootall said I feel like I can't get a natural stride. When I'm on a treadmill I usually feel too scared to let go of the handles because I don't want to slip off the back  :))

I've recently gotten on my old bicycle due to that bike thread..

It's much easier on my whole body now that I'm old.. and I was running 2 miles every other day prior.

I didn't have much pain, except you can feel that your joints are sore afterwards..  not painful, but it's readily apparent that  the impact is there..

Whereas on a bicycle I'm getting roughly the same cardiovascular exercise,  but I don't feel much in the joints at all.

As for side splitting pain  (from running),  that usually has to do with taking shallow breaths..   practice stomach breathing, and use that during running..

If you have a heavy meal (lots of fats / protein).  wait at least 8 hours before you attempt running.  Go to the bathroom first...

The reason is..  that stuff Clumps in your system,  so you got this heavy section of mass moving up and down inside you, while you're running..   this leads to pain.

Cycling is an awesome cardio workout.  No joint pain, and you get to cover some serious ground. Only downside is bikes and gear can get expensive, the cool thing about running is you just need a good pair of shoes.

Um.. hahahaha..

You need a bigger seat...

I didn't get -prostate- problems,  but My butt was hurting. specifically my pelvic and tailbone. so I got a HUGE seat.. and now everything's fine..

This one is the one that's $20 better than the one I got, it's the larger model with EVEN more cushion.

I only got the $50 one, but I wish I got the $70 one, cuz honestly,  if the $50 feels this comfortable,  I'd really like to try the $70

Don't buy those cheaper $20-30 ones,  they barely have any cushioning. they look like they would, since they're bulbous looking, but they're actually quite hard.

I do 9 miles every other morning.  butt feels great.

Definitely get a seat with a channel. If you're riding a lot a pair of bike shorts with padding goes a long way. My seat has almost no cushion but my cycling shorts all have huge pads so it's never a problem unless I'm doing over 5 hours. Nothing will save you on rides that long.

Ooh, this is an interesting thread.  I haven't lifted since I rowed in college (didn't have time after Freshman year :-/ ), but I'm working on getting back into things.  I've started running again, and once I get that into a regular routine, I may hit the gym again.  It's just been so long I feel like I'll be really out of practice...

Maybe my GH brothers and sisters can be the motivation I need.   :-*

I'm with Seranite. I ****ing hate running. I only want to run if I'm chasing a bus or a (big) dog is chasing me. I get around it by hitting the rowing machine at the gym. I want to pick up a bike or something to do cardio outside though. Seriously, I hate running. I forced myself to run (on various machines inside) for 6 months and every minute was torture for me.

If I had to run on a machine I would hate it too.

Actually, I did hate it even not on a machine.  Running was the worst.  But then I started to not suck, and now I don't mind it.  Obviously if you've been running for 6 months you've given it a fair chance, so I don't say that to convince you to keep with it, just sharing my experience.

Motivation is the hard point for me too.
I practice basketball and during the season it's 2 trainings + match the weekend and I have no problem going everytime.
But since the season is over I haven't ran a kilometer yet :x
And I know I'll be dying because of that in the first trainings...

In High school football, the coaches used to make us run as a punishment when we F'd up, lol. I hate running but do get on the treadmill here and there.

Weightlifting is way more enjoyable to me (don't have to go heavy), if you're isolating the muscle(s) and getting 10-15 reps per set, you're doing it right!

I've kinda started doing some simple stuff at home because i used to work as a baggage handler back in Canada and that made me stronger than i ever realized because at the time i just had no choice and was forced to do it because, "it's my job" So after i moved to Japan i just did nothing and now things that used to be so light feel way heavier only after a yearish.

Honestly i don't think i'll really get back to that strength because i really don't have the motivation to workout that hard so i just accept the fact that i'm doing something rather than nothing now. I really have to find another very physical job because it's actually insanely satisfying for me to "get paid for working out" at least that's how i always felt about it.

i move on average 50lbs - 75lbs slabs of meat for 9 hours a night 6nights a week, its ****ty man. i have alot of natural lean muscle from doing this for 3 years but didnt start showing size until the gym. I suppose that makes sense since you're forced to expend that energy for work but for myself even when I was at my peak fitness (which isn't that great/fit) I still didn't want to hit the gym. I mean this might have to do with the fact that I've never been not fat in my life so gaining size has never ever been a priority. Sure I'd love to be ripped but in my whole life I've never been that mentally strong to want to push myself through the... "struggle?" this might also be why I have no marketable skills and have no career in sight but that's for another thread.

I used to race bicycles at a national level in college. Now I do a group boot camp style class 5-6 days a week, often at 5:30am. Exercise is important. A gym membership now is cheap compared to doctor bills later.

The job just wastes energy i could be using to work out, on the plus i dont need cardio, my pedo meter (... ;)) says i walk 15k steps a night so atleast i dont need cardio
What's it gonna cost me for a 75lb slab of meat to fall off the back of a truck onto my front porch?

I started lifting again a bit under a year ago, after neglecting fitness for most of college.  I'm working on getting my bench up, then I might consider entering a local meet for fun  ;D

Today consisted of many squats and deadlifts.

i guess I can post my total too

total (@132lb)
squat 380lb
deadlift 450lb
bench 195lb

and those are your numbers  im skeptical but  :thumb: What is your height btw, i'm guessing short by your weight
I'm 5'7" (67in./170cm)

Yeah.. my squat was actually a fair bit higher back in high school, but years of neglect and doing dumb **** have probably affected my legs a bit.

I don't remember exactly my starting numbers last August, but it was somewhere around:
300-330 DL
under 100 bench
285 squat

This is my first year doing deadlifts, most of my previous training was doing bodybuilding movements

Health is my biggest motivator. I hope to be able to play sports with my kids far into the future. My biggest fear is that my son(s) will want to play football, and I will only be able to "go" for 10-15 minutes.

Oh boy...this thread will come back to haunt me. It's been a couple of months since I hit the gym; I really need to get back into it. The summer is so easy to make excuses (don't have to wake up early to find parking in the city).

When I was going, I got down to 225 (I think I'm back up to high 230's or low 240's, damn you delicious food), and could squat 425, leg press 450. My upper body is quite bad though, just got to 40lb dumbbell flys.

I also ran 2x a week, usually pulling a 7:15mile (when I first started, couldn't even run 1/4 of a mile without stopping), occasional 5ks.

Diet consisted of almost zero carbs, steak and eggs, and cold cuts for lunch (with veggies). Lost a lot of weight this way. Sometimes did protein shakes, but mostly made sure I ate within 30 minutes of my workout. Otherwise I would feel crappy  :(

Waking up at 7am is so nice. I can't go to the gym at night though (just doesn't work for me). Really need to get back into it so I can lose it again.

Coffee has been failing me pre workout for that boost, trying this for the first time today. Can't slack on Bi's and tri's day,

Open to recommendations for pre work out meal/drink my motivation is there but when lifting my energy feels at 0%, it's not over training and my lifts have stayed the same for 3 weeks, I'm lost.

Could it be related to quitting smoking?

How many calories are you eating a day?

That Pre-workout will give you some energy, but if you aren't eating enough calories throughout the day you will feel tired. I usually take a protein shake or some type of protein about an hour or so before I lift every day and then right before my workout I will take some pre-workout and add more creatine.

How long have you been running the same type of lift program? It is usually a good idea to change it up in some way i.e. going from high volume, lower weights to higher weights lower, volume, or change up the plan completely.

I ****ed w C4 for a while then kinda got off pre's for the most part. A friend gave me ON's Platinum Pre and it definitely ups the hype. It's got straight pepper extract in it which makes the last swig spicy as ****. He gave it to me cuz it was lighting is ass on fire when he'd poop, but I haven't had that problem (yet).

i eat about 5-6 500 calories meals a day (each meal split into healthy fats/carbs/protein)

my gym day normally consists of...

wake up with a bottle of water

breakfast: PBJ + Ice Coffe mixed in Whey shake
pre workout: Steak egg cheese on bagel
post: Protein/Creatin shake + tuna sandwich or another PBJ
snack: either Metrx meal replace bar or chicken and rice
Dinner: whatever i want that has even protein+carbs
1work break: 2 greek yogurts+Banana
work lunch: 2x 250 cal burritos (25g protein) + Can of Pigeon Peas
home: Bowl of cereal + Casein Shake

my off days consist of the same minus a meal or two

i havent varied my routine up that much could be the problem...

there's also that correlation found between men who take muscle building supplements and testicular-cancer..

Now, the supplements might not be the Cause,  but the correlation means,  SOMETHING in the lifestyles of the men, who take muscle supplements,  is causing greater odds of testicular cancer...

But I guess the upside is,  if you're buff, and attractive,  you get the girl sooner,  and you have kids sooner,  and you won't need your testiculars-no-more...

I'm with hoff, I'm not interested in being ripped but I've got to do something.  The older I get the more I look like my dad. No chest muscles then slowly sloping down to a big belly.

I'll have ~1 to 2 hours (8pm-10pm) Monday-Friday when the kids start back to school where I could work something in.

But I don't even know where to start when it comes to working out.

Going to the gym is not a possibility. :(

Now, the supplements might not be the Cause,  but the correlation means,  SOMETHING in the lifestyles of the men, who take muscle supplements,  is causing greater odds of testicular cancer...

But I guess the upside is,  if you're buff, and attractive,  you get the girl sooner,  and you have kids,  and you won't need your testiculars-no-more...

hahahahahahahahhahahaha

i have never met a girl who was stoked on balls, frankly i feel i dont need em. They get in the way and are prone to injury more so than any other organ i has. i could live without balls

I'm with hoff, I'm not interested in being ripped but the older I get the more I look like my dad. No chest muscles then slowly sloping down to a big belly.

I'll have ~1 to 2 hours (8pm-10pm) Monday-Friday when the kids start back to school where I could work something in.

But I don't even know where to start when it comes to working out.

Going to the gym is not a possibility. :(

Exercise bike..   $20-50 on craigslist..

Get on that...   do 20 minutes every other morning.. the Fat will melt RIGHT OFF YOU...

Make sure the one you get has a WIDE seat,   for max comfort..

You don't even have to put it on a high setting,   just from the extra stimulation, your body will burn MORE calories ALL DAY...

cardio and body weight exercises will do wonders! just setting up a routine is the hardest part, even for 30-45mins a day

I do have an exercise bike and was putting in some time on it every other day. Just need to make it a habit.

And yeah the seats a little narrow, I should have kept the comfy bike seat I received by accident when I bought my first HHKB off eBay.

Yeah I'm with you on this, the idea of going to a gym sounds like a nightmare. So I'm going to start swimming again, it seems like the best and most enjoyable way to get fit!
Going to try and start going every Friday after work for an hour or two.

Distract yourself from the actual biking, like having a tv in front of you , a tablet/smartphone game, or even GH browsing.

Yeah the bike is right in front of a TV in our bedroom and I occasionally browse GH and listen to Pandora, it really helps.

I ****ed w C4 for a while then kinda got off pre's for the most part. A friend gave me ON's Platinum Pre and it definitely ups the hype. It's got straight pepper extract in it which makes the last swig spicy as ****. He gave it to me cuz it was lighting is ass on fire when he'd poop, but I haven't had that problem (yet).

Just, trying to point out one of the major hurdles to exercise when it's at the end of the day.

Perhaps, use the extra time you have at the end of the day to -sleep- earlier,    Then that way you can get up just a bit sooner,  to get in the 20 minutes on the xicer bike.

--1.. time wise, there's this whole lead up to getting to the gym, even 10 minutes is 10 minutes, both ways, that's 20 minutes...  vs, exercising at home,  0 travel time..

If you went to the gym every other day,  that's 183 * 20min, that's 61 hours of extra driving time a year..   and it's time you could've used for something else.

--2.. I didn't mean multiple bags,  but the fact that you'd need to pack them at all

--3.. At least a the gyms I've been to, sometimes the machine is occupied

--4.. I might be oversensitive on what constitutes -dirty- people,  but there's this whole sweat smell at the gym,  and more than a few times,  the guys look like their hygiene is not the best..

I seriously cannot wrap my head around pre-workout supplements. I get post-workout, for restoring those nutrients lost/consumed during a workout, is it the same principle? Maybe since I schedule my workouts in the morning, it wouldn't make much sense. Usually I don't even eat before workouts  :blank:

I usually run in the morning and make sure I drink my morning smoothie (whey/fruit/yogurt/spirulina etc)  1 hour or longer before I start my workout or I get cramps. I know some people do it for energy but I am unsure about wether you get better results with supplements/protein etc before or after a workout ? Could someone more knowledgeable chime in on that !?

I was just catching up, but my favorite pre workout is a cup of strong black coffee, with creative mixed in.

Ray, everyone posted great options. All of which will not help without your own motivation. Only advice I can give, and it may sound condescending, but if you want to do it, do it. Nobody can tell you how to make time, but if you can even find 15-20 minutes during the day for bodyweight exercise, that's better than nothing. Over time, that will turn into 30, then 60. I personally do not recommend exercise before bed. You will find it harder to fall asleep, and get worse sleep 9/10 times. Your body needs sleep in order to properly recover. Another thing that will help greatly, is to analyze your diet. If you write down everything you eat for a week, you will quickly realize what would need to be changed. There are many diets out there that work well. I have done Paleo, and gotten great results. I will be switching over to Keto very soon.

Regardless what you end up doing, good luck and let us all know if we can help you out.

When I was seriously lifting, I had this wild dietary program: I ate food. You know, like eat some peanut butter or nuts before I lift. Drink chocolate milk after working out? Remember that? Food?

I don't get protein drinks or casein injections or pre-workout shots or whatever other **** I see at GNC. Someone even told me at work you can't start losing weight and dieting without going to GNC.

Yep can't rely on supplements but if you want to get in certain macros without eating a disgusting amount of food, protein shakes and other stuffs are your friend. Diet is the biggest though. Gotta control portions and such.

The only thing I take, is protein and creatine. Everything else is just a gimmick, imo.

Did you know that companies are not required to list what is in their "proprietary blend."

Yep, it's a big problem in the industry.

I used to make my own pre-workout but stopped recently and started up with C4 again. I have tried Beta-alanine recently that smelled and tasted terrible and just decided to try C4 again for a while until I run out.

Crossfit is great imo. My only real grievance is that form can be compromised greatly and they can still call it a good lift. It is great for getting people into shape and getting people healthier. They need to stop touting speed over proper form though.

I had to work on wrist flexibility in order to find a comfortable hold. Let me see if I can get some videos to demonstrate.

Work on losing fat and lift heavy for your training. Unless you aren't really that overweight then just slow bulk to put on solid muscle.

Dwayne did it for a few recent movie roles but I would also think for the fact that he desires that body type. Sometimes it's all mental. Being able to perform the feats in American Ninja Warrior does actually put your body under tremendous amounts of strain due to shear endurance required in the forearms, biceps and back.

Then you can slam beers, get drunk and eat at Taco Bell at 2:00am on the weekends with your buds and not feel bad! =)

Gym life, bruh.

Seriously though I absolutely love going to the gym.

Same man! I get crazy looks when I say I love lifting.

Digi: I still feel bad about drinking a ton of beer and eating fast food.

Digi: I still feel bad about drinking a ton of beer and eating fast food.

hah, yea, I used an extreme example there even though it does happen here or there.

My point is that people are always worried about their diets and you'll notice that most of those people who follow these "diet plans" simply don't exercise. If you do exercise during the week, you have the luxury of indulging a lil' bit on the weekends.

You still want to eat healthy, people need to use a lil common sense, like staying away from saturated fats, no carbs after dinner, only drink American Whiskey (not that Euro **** that STH drinks), don't make me spell it out folks! :)

Awesome! Way to go  :thumb:

When I first started I was right at 260. Got down to 226, then I stopped and went back, I'm at 236 right now. I've only been back for a week or so but I feel like I'm doing really well. Maxed out my leg press at 495...gotta work on my squats and my abs.

Two biggest annoyances for me:

* No calloused hands, which makes lifting that much more annoying
* Running. I really need to find alternative cardio. I could get away with 0 cardio during my week but I think it's important. Luckily I may have found a friend *cough spotter *cough who I could play games like racquetball with.

I gotta start paying more attention to my eating. Lunch is going well, light caesar salad and cold cuts plus berries. Under 500 calories and very satisfying. Dinner is the biggest challenge as I am lazy after work. For breakfast, not too bad - I started bringing breakfast bowls to work since before I would do a workout and just eat crap like Pop Tarts afterwards, really didnt make me feel very good :( . My main thing is carbs...gotta stay away from the carbs and get back on that protein swole tho.

I hate cardio so bad. If I have a movie to watch it's not bad at all, but with me being deaf Cardio is soooooooo boring since I can't listen to music

I can't run, especially on blacktop. It is just painful and stupid. I eventually want a big sloping back yard so I can build a sand track up and down it like NFL players do.

I just started watching American Ninja Warrior because my best bud is obsessed. The bulky guys fail every time. Plus it is just stupid to put that strain on your body. I don't know what Dwayne Johnson is thinking getting all big again after trimming down; his gimped lower body is gonna pay.

Usually climbers end up doing really well in Ninja Warrior.  ;)  hint, hint (you guys should all start climbing ;) )

Also if you like American Ninja Warrior, I'd highly recommend watching the original Japanese show.  The show has a different overall tone to it, and I prefer the OG to the American adaptation.

The Japanese show is definitely great but for the American show, it had to be adapted. Was just too easy for some American contestants.

Exactly.  It was known as being incredibly brutal, and IIRC they actually made it easier after the 2nd or 3rd year since no one came close to completing it.  If anything, I thought they made the American one easier.  :P

I don't remember Americans beating it but in the latter seasons didn't a bunch of Americans make it to the third stage fairly easily? I could be remembering it wrong.

Just checked the Wiki page for Sasuke, Levi Meeuwenberg and Drew Dreschel are two prominent Americans as well as a few others who I can't recall, who dominated the later competitions.

I've got a question, that I know the "right" answer to, but want some opinions.

How much sleep do you guys get while weight training? I'm taking night courses, and am averaging ~5hrs a night. I'm thinking about waking up an hour early to work out, so that will take me down to 4. I know I can function on that much, and I know its not healthy. My main concern is recovery time.

It will decrease your gains, however I don't know the difference between 4 or 5 hours.

I also haven't lifted since starting back to class. So my last consistent period in the gym, I was getting the full 8. So I'm not sure how badly I will feel the effects yet.

I don't see it affecting you much more than having 5 hours of sleep.

Okay. I've been riding the stationary bike 15-17 miles per day (1 hour), lifting 10lb weights while I ride, and walking about a mile per day. I've cut my carb intake down at least 3/4. Why have I gained 3 lbs?

Stress?  :(  I'm far from an expert, but that's the first thing that comes to mind.  Other than that, how long has it been since you started this new routine?

But how long have you been doing the new routine where you are working out?  If it's only been a week or so, your body might be adjusting to the new routine still (again, not an expert).

It's not at all unusual to gain a few pounds initially after beginning an exercise routine. Muscle is heavier than fat. Better to appraise improvements based on % of body fat rather than actual body weight. Keep it up and the pounds will start shedding.

Thanks! Yea, I really need to focus on preventing that now. I practiced some rack pulls the other day, worked up to 545x5 and 600x1 and the lower back rounding in the 600 attempt was really obvious. I should have filmed 545x5 to check that too. No pain or irritation in that area though to indicate any real issues.

Yeah some can lift with a rounded back just fine, I think Magnuson and Poundstone do. When I lifted more, my sticking point was just before lockout, because I would forget to squeeze my glutes on my max set. That might help with some of the hitching in the video at the top.

Also elitefts has some good lifting training videos on YouTube.

The rack pulls were done to help exactly with that sticking point and I will have to check out the elitefts videos. My sticking point has changed recently though. Used to be off the floor but now I have issues at lockout.

I always deal with that. I always end up training my sticking point too much and then end up with issues at the other end. Right now its off the floor for me.

I thought it might be this, but I also thought 10lb weights and fairly low resistance on the bike wouldn't bulk me up. Thanks for the advice. I will keep on pushing and try to get rid of this carb gut I got over the last 8 months.

We back bois.

I've been focusing on cardio ever since the fall semester ended. This semester I only have class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I should be able to get enough rest to lift. Gonna start on Monday, still unsure on my plan. Probably gonna do some hiit and cardio m/w/f. I'm also going to go back to strict paleo for about a month. I'll reevaluate afterwards.

End goal is Spartan Sprint for now. Depending on how well that goes, I may look for a Super after.

I have to admit, its felt good being back in the gym. I have no idea where I'll be at on Monday, since its been about 4 months since I've lifted but I'm stoked.

I have to admit, its felt good being back in the gym. I have no idea where I'll be at on Monday, since its been about 4 months since I've lifted but I'm stoked.

Damn 4 months!

I'm itching to get back into the gym after a day off.

Kill it though! I'd say hit some squats or deads to get back into the mood but that's just me.

Ya know, I was having a hard time carrying a semi-full grocery bag the other day. Maybe I need to combine my chipotle diet with some cardio/lifting for max results  :D

I was averaging 4-5 hrs of sleep and decided to just wait it out. Deff planning on squats and DL though, by far my favorite lifts.

Oh ok that's understandable. Have fun getting back into it though. The DOMS will be a killer though.

I'm always surprised when I find out that people on forums, work out and stuff like that. I'm about 190 cm, and ~105 kg. im personally quite strongly built, bone wise. im not denying that I have excess body fat. So for me I mostly want to cut. I'm going about it by eating enough to not gain weight when I Dont work out, and eating the same amount so I lose weight, when I work out. but I sometimes find it hard to have either energy or motivation as I often dont feel like doing anything after work or school. I do my best, I just wish I had a gym buddy. The guy I used to work out with was great. and during the time when we worked out together I lost like 2+ kg in a week. But I also had time for it as it was summerbreak at the time. I'll end this by saying that I dont lift for numbers, I prefer freeweights and do alot off accesorry building I would say. also I'm glad I found this thread, motivated me so im doing back after school today!

If you lived local I would be your gym buddy .. lol.

I'm in the same boat as you on lifting. I don't focus on a number as much as being able to do a full range of motion correctly.

As for me, I know I would be well past my goal weight I f 200 if I wasn't such a picky eater. I don't eat a ton and watch the quantity every meal, but the food I eat is not that great for you :(

Yeah gyms here are insanely expensive (or the ones that aren't only have cardio machines), so I can't really bring myself to bite that bullet so I just do bodyweight, been using rings for a bit now. Too bad it kinda  sucks for legs, so at some point I'll just have to do it so that I can hit those squatz and deadlifts.

Also training for L-sit as well! Handstands to come at some point too.

Make sure you have the proper technique before you stat doing barbell stuff, if not you'll feel it as soon as you start to lift heavier.

Started boxing few months ago..
Stopped with lifting weights for a while to put more time in boxing..
Lost some weight but my lifting suffered hard.

Got back to 5x5 stronglifts 2 weeks ago.
Back to 80kg bench, 100kg squats, 120kg deadlift, 69kg OHP and 80kg rows.
But I might be pushing myself too hard to get back.

I will be focusing more on bodyweight personally, and will also start doing lower weights and more reps. I don't chase numbers, and want to build a more functional body. So for me focusing on core strength and being able to body weight excercise more easily is a goal as of now. I am 190cm~ and 105+kg atm so I will be cutting properly after easter break (going to Scotland to see my bestfriend so gonna let loose a little) and do more cardio. Atleast that's my plan going forward  :thumb:

What do you guys think of Crossfit? been contemplating joining a crossfit gym, so I took the crossfit level 1 certification class as an introduction , I learned a lot and suffice to say I completely bombed that exam, super hard. I learned a lot in terms of their dieting plan which seems solid, they cut up everything into blocks and split up how many blocks you can eat in a day etc, It works but you've got to be on point with it. besides that a couple of thinks seemed iffy to me, such as a lot of shoulder work, which I don't like and then Kipping pullups ,.. which I can't do for the life of me! aside from that they have some really intense workouts: I really liked how they transition you into learning all the power lifting moves, sumo dead-lifts  & ease of mind of a workout of the day "WoD" so I could technically stop winging what type of works outs I do in the gym, that being said I was thinking of it more as a complementary type of activity and still going to the gym and lifting etc. Thoughts?

Thoughts?

It seems to me that it is very much dependent on the gym you go to, as pretty much anyone can get a certification and open a gym. This leads to a lot of 'coaches' not actually knowing about things like bad form and actively encouraging people to do advanced manoeuvres like kipping pullups, without teaching the basics first, leading to injuries down the road.

It seems like a good program if people are given a good progression, but from what I've seen, they just like to slap together a bunch of exercises into a circuit and call it done.

Personally I'd just follow an actual routine instead of 'a bunch of exercises' and progress accordingly. I also think that **** like 'dieting plans' is way overthinking it and you should just eat based on your macros and TDEE requirements, but whatevs.

Crossfit is really great as a program and motivator to get you "in the gym". It goes through a lot of core lifts, works a variety of fitness goals and has a simple, easy to follow program. The community is also encouraging to new people (to the point of zealotry sometimes...) while providing concrete progression for lifts and such. If thats what you want, do it.

The biggest problems with crossfit though is lack of focus and a competitive angle, which breeds a lot of the critisisms of injuries and generally wasting your time. I think those criticisms are fair, and there's a certain point where you really don't want to be rushing lifts or doing ARAP for your progress. This is really going to depend on your box and how they program, which is true for any fitness activity, but in this case its set in place what you're going to do a given day/time.

If you can afford that, and like having someone provide you with a workout and guidance, go for it. Using it as a supplement is a great way to hit the parts of your body/fitness that crossfit will miss in any given class, and allow you to address muscle imbalances. Again though, it REALLY depends on your box. There are some I would never recommend people to go to, and some that I would recommend even experienced lifters to check out for coaching. Know your limits and your body and lift accordingly.

Well its not just a bunch of exercises, they spent quite a lot of time teaching how to program your workouts so that everyone could do it & also one of their biggest points was that all their workouts are scaled so that your grandmother could be able to do it. so they actually do teach the basics, but the dieting plan was more of a way of raising awareness on the harmful effects of complex carbs & basically preaching a keto- type of diet, I'm more of a firm believer in winging it when it comes to eating; maintaining a 1 gram of protein to pound ratio atleast, some fats, wholesome carbs, no glucose. thats been working pretty good for me. Until I decided to bulk  :'(.

Now thats 100% true. they do so much and they literally have 10 things they want to achieve they preach into being wellrounded in everything, which seems fine and dandy but lets be realistic. we have finite time. The competitive angle is terrible, and the fixed program could mess you up, if you're not feeling 100% but decide to workout because bro-science and herd-mentality.

Well I can afford it, I want to try it out but we don't really have any boxes open here yet! but I'm a firm believer in knowing your limits and not lifting heavy and going fullretard. I'm interested in it as a form of cardiovascular activity( I got bored of stairmasters mayn) and testing my threshold of willpower & perseverance required to finish any AMRAPS/ challenges. I mean 2,000 meters on a row machine in 7 minutes is the type of stuff that's getting me interested, because thats no common feat

It's likely that you would be good at it. I never had the flexibility to become exceptional in the Olympic lifts. My best jerk from a rack was 335 but I could never clean over 295.  You might be better off staying away from them.I think that the power lifts are probably safer; too much can go wrong suddenly and the body is forced into awkward positions.

I haven't followed competitive weight/powerlifting in many years. Have they made powerlifting an olympic sport yet?

Thanks for the insight. I still want to try light C&J if anything to help with shoulder strength.

Powerlifting is not an Olympic sport yet but hopefully in the future. Too many federations and not a solid enough set of rules amongst all the federations. There has been a movement to get it into the Olympics though or at least get it considered.

I thought I'd chime in here quickly. So today I did legs. 10x10 squats doing 10 reps no matter what. And seeing how I haven't hit legs in the gym in a while it was tough. but I did 10 every set. Right now I need to work on my eating habits and my plan is to try being a vegetarian for a week starting today and doing intermittent fasting. It feels good getting back to the gym and working out after exams and all the stress that comes with school and work. Still not on break but I have more free time nonetheless.
I also have started doing kickboxing which gives me some cardiovascular training and bodyweight strength.
So here is to getting fit!  :p

Hot damn, a thread for me!

Bench today.

235 2x5, 2x3.  I was planning on 4 sets of 3 at a minimum, 5 max so it was pretty solid to hit 5 reps on the first two sets.  Of all things, my left bicep noped out of the extra reps on the 3rd and 4th set.  Need to work on bicep strength as I've not given them much attention in quite some time due to the pain involved in anything bicep related.

On that note, 25 lb curls for 4x12.  My left bicep was definitely done after that.

85 lb dumb bell rows for 2x8, 1x5 (arms were shot and I just couldn't get the reps on the last set).  I think I'm sticking with dumb bell rows and may add in barbell rows at times.  Less painful on the forearms/elbow area.

Yeah, I've been worried about elbow tendinitis and golfer's elbow.  Some foam rolling of the forearms has helped tremendously.  After the initial round, I've just had to roll once or twice a week to keep things better.  Right now it's just trying to carefully build the biceps back up as they're a definite weak point in my bench right now.  I widened my grip slightly which seems to have helped.  I still need to work on my speed on bringing the bar down to my chest in single reps, though.  I'm faster after the first rep but in competition, you get three singles and that's it.

Trying to get some more pause work in.  I've been trying to pause more of my warmup sets and maybe a rep or two on my first working set.  I may try to add in a few heavier paused reps on my volume day as well.  Floor presses (standing shoulder press), I do once a week as well.  Weight's decent there but I've still got some work to do.  Trying to get that built up.

I talked with a few of the older guys at the gym.

They basically say, all the little things you do amount to very little difference in the long run.

The majority of the gain is simply attained through Consistency which takes years and years.

Then they went on to how, if you see anyone get big fast,  Steroids, 100% of the time.

Consistency is the key, yes.  That said, there are ways you can help things along quickly at times and under certain circumstances.  That generally involves specialty lifting routines that you run for a certain amount of time, then move back to more general or block routines with the goal of gradual progression.  Such routines exist for the three major powelifting lifts and aren't uncommon to run.  It's just that they're not really designed to run all the time but more for pushing through plateaus or in the quest for some magic number you're trying for (and relatively near).

Of course, I'm not out to get big as a primary goal.  My main focus is on powerlifting so I'm after bigger numbers on the squat, bench, and deadlift specifically.  That said I do like to add in some bodybuilding accessories to my powerlifting main lifting.

These have helped me it too.

Well ****, I was thinking overhead press with floor press for some odd reason.  Yeah, I've not really done those given we only have a single power rack and I'd always feel a bit guilty doing that there.  I might consider it at times, though.

Anyone have any tips maintaining muscle on an extended trip? I'm travelling for over a month for business and would like to maintain my physique but it doesn't look like it's gonna be easy :(

Packing a jar of protein powder and I'm planning to keep hitting 160g protein every day but without consistent access to a gym I'm worried I'm gonna lose all my gainz...

depending on how much time you have, you can fit 20min-1hr of bodyweight training most days which should keep you decently fit

it depends on the progression you are at. for me, regular pushups are hard enough. however, if you're stronger then you could try diamond pushup, uneven pushup etc. much like how you can add weight to make workouts harder, you can change the way you perform workouts to make it harder for yourself

So today was good... until it sucked.  Finished my back squats of 390 lbs 3x5 without problem.  Did a 405 single, then moved on to front squats.  On the last rep of my 225 warmup set.... muscle pulled.  I could feel it.  It still hurts.  Ugh.  I managed 245 for 3 reps but ran out of time and didn't push it further.  Still, tomorrow will likely suck.  Stupid me, I tightened up my gut rather than filling out the belt on that last rep like an idiot.

Looks like I'll be icing that when I get home.

tfw feeling happy with progress and you go and see people working out for the same amount of time with 2x the gains  :(

Heh.  Yeah there's one guy at the gym that makes everyone else feel small and weak.  No worries.  We just need to keep doing our thing and progressing.

Yeah everyone is different just keep pushing to better yourself. Don't worry about others.

Yeah, that's the crappy part about getting older.  Still making strength gains for now, at least.  The bummer is that I apparently missed the window for the mass of late spring / early summer powerlifting meets.  Looks like the next decent one is October.

Well damn.  Deadlifts did not like me at all today.  Really, my lower back didn't like me at all today.

Did squats for 400 lbs 3x3, 425 x1.  Deadlifts were supposed to be 430 lbs 2x5.  I managed one set of 5 and at that, the 4th and 5th reps took a bit before bringing them up.  Ended up just doing a single for 455 after that as I couldn't at least make it a double.  Ugh.

I think I'm probably going to have to trim squat volume down a bit on my deadlifting days, at least once the weight gets heavier.  Last week wasn't so bad.  395 3x5 then 415 x1 for squats, 415 3x5 for deadlifts.  Next week's just 1x5 at 445.

Apparently lost about 15lbs since the last time I weighed myself 3 months ago. Didn't even do anything, in fact I've been more sedentary the last few months.

Pretty sure it's from having a ridged meal schedule due to my job and not getting the chance to get hungry an hour later or travel to the kitchen for snacks all day. Been drinking a boatload of soda recently though, so I dunno man.

The week after next should be fun.  I hit an interesting milestone.  My working sets for squats will be 405 lbs.  Cleared 400 for 3x5 yesterday and will be bumping up to 405.  Probably for 3 reps and working up from there.  Next week I'm on vacation part of the week so I'm just going to take it as a rest / deload week for a bit of a break.

Yeah that'd be good but try to stick to steaming them if you eat them often.

So I'm digging hook grip more and more for deadlifts.  Today was deadlift day.  Did some squats first working up to a heavy single set of 415 x4 then moved to deadlifts.  Most of my warmup sets are regular over/over grip and normally I'll switch to hook grip for the last warmup set.  Working sets I go mixed grip.

Today, after completing  445 x5 on deadlifts mixed grip, I decided to try a single 445 hook grip.  Hit it without any problems.  I figured what the hell and bumped up, hitting 475 hook grip as well.  Failed 495 but that was more body fatigue setting in than grip failure.

Might keep working hook grip in.  Though... RIP my poor thumbs.

Yeah, it's been hours since I finished my deads and my thumbs can still feel it a bit.  Not quite as bad as when I go bouldering but bouldering doesn't smash the hell out of my thumbs either.

Honestly, I think if I'd focused on just pulling for singles rather than the heavy squat and dead sets, I probably could have hit my mixed-grip PR of 505 today.

And... apparently I've just now signed up for a USPA meet so I'll be lifting on the 30th officially.  Should be fun.

Thanks!  A handful of us from the LA Fitness I normally use are signing up for it.  The interesting thing is, I still have a shot at the California 40-44 198 lb squat record.  It's been pretty low for a while and is sitting at around 450 last I checked a week or two ago.  I'm guessing it won't last long because it really should be somewhere in the 500 range like the 181 40-44 class.

They're tested and untested.  The tested stuff just started this year, though the records posted seem to be for untested as I see some 2014 and 2015 records in there.

And yes, it really is low.  I was looking at it for giggles to see what I needed to do and had to do a double take on the squat.  The bench is in the 400 range, deadlift is 570 but that squat caught me off guard.

So now I'm hoping to get the squat 198 record before trying to drop to 181 where a Masters 1 total is signifcantly lower.  Might be fun to qualify for nationals next year at 181.

My singlet and knee sleeves have arrived.  Damn.  That singlet is... well, it's only reasonably comfortable commando.

The SBD knee sleeves.  I tried some medium Stong Sleeves and they weren't too bad to get in.  The SBD large were more of a pain.  The Strongs were broken in, though, but it was still surprising.  I don't think I could do mediums without some lotion on the legs first.  Maybe shave them for good measure.

Good news for lifting, at least.  Squats 440x2 and bench 250x2 were solid.  My deadlift... well... managed 470 after all the squatting which wasn't too bad but cut my damn thumb inside the nail.  I couldn't quite manage hook grip.

Next week I'll test out maxes and see where things sit.  I'm hoping a lot of rest, foam rolling, and stretching will help out.

I recall the videos of people trying to get SBDs on.  Particularly entertaining was before the ban on assisted knee sleeves, where some of the huge guys were trying to squeeze into L when they should have been in 2XL.

Going to have to figure out the singlet, though.  It's going to suck ass to have to wear that thing all day with briefs.  I'm also thinking Titan's sizing is odd and I should have gone 2XL even at 196 lbs.

Meet prep week has been going decently well thus far.

Squats: 435, 455, 470 (PR).

Bench: 245, 265 (tied PR), 225 2s pause, 275 (failed).

Squats felt fantastic with the new SBDs.  Might have had 475 in me.  I figured a 5 lb PR was good enough and just went for that.

For bench, I honestly might have hit 270 but was more concerned about nailing the pause at the chest and keeping descent speed reasonable rather than a snails pace.

Still have to do deadlifts on Friday but all in all, not too bad thus far.

Solid lifts man! Remember to stay in control of the bar path and focus on keeping the upward motion going when you press.

Thanks.  Bench is definitely an odd one for me.  I still need to improve my bar path.  I know it's been off a few times when I've hit the hooks on the way up on my high volume days.  Everything is a work in progress but that's definitely a known issue.  Another round of Smolov Jr. is tempting.

Funny thing is, I just checked the meet list and there's another guy in my age/weight combo that's also a CrossFit instructor.  I may well be screwed but oh well ;)  The first meet is supposed to be fun, they say.

Deadlifts max day.  Managed 435, 465, 480, 495.  I'm thinking about switching 435 down to 425.  A 40lb bump wouldn't initially be all that bad.  Did some warmup squats prior, only up to 315 x1 and mostly to practice unracking / setup as you seem to only get 5 seconds from unrack to get set up and ready to squat.  I didn't want to get into trouble on squats because of that.

Now to just keep from gaining weight >.<

Weigh-in and gear check is done.  Got my rack heights situated as well.  Goal was 90kg and was... 86.4 or so.  Also had to put in openers.  Glad to have that done.  Interesting thing is, we've got a few travelers for a 65-person local meet.  In Los Angeles and we've got some from NM and one from IN.

The bummer is... it's in a Crossfit gym that was converted from an auto repair shop.  No AC, just some large fans and they open the garage bays.  It's supposed to be in the mid-90s F tomorrow.   We're also wondering where they're going to put the spectators and warmup area.  It's not the biggest gym.

Thanks!  So final numbers in freedom units / kg are....

Squat: 462.971 / 210
Bench: 259 / 117.5.  I think that's it.  I've honestly forgot.  Bonus: wife took the kids to get lunch so no video and USPA is slow as all getout on putting local meet info up.
Deadlift: 496.04 / 225

As for leaving weight on the bar, I absolutely did.  I have no doubt of that.  For the squat, it was both to secure the state record as well as have something left for deadlifts - skipped an allowed 4th attempt on squats to break the record I'd just set.  I was ~8 lbs off my PR of 2 weeks ago.  For bench, I just played it safe as the opener felt a bit heavier than I was expecting.  I rebounded and bumped the 3rd up more but still lower than where I should have been.  For deadlifts, honestly I wasn't fully sure I would hit the 3rd.  Then had the guys in my flight telling me I had more in me.  It was tough but I may have possibly hit 505.1 / 227.5.

It probably didn't help that it was in the low-mid 90s F and we were in a gym without AC.  I'm also going to have to pay a bit more attention to depth.  With better depth, I'd probably have a bit more for squats and deads.  Bench I just need to flat out work on.  I'm really eyeing another round of Smolov Jr. there.

Ugh.  Volume after peaking sucks.  Did squats yesterday and my legs are already sore.  Tomorrow's really going to suck.  Benched today so we'll see how that feels.  At least tomorrow is cardio.

Good news: I completed volume squats today which didn't happen on Monday.  Yay me!

Bad news: Had just about nothing left for deadlifts.  I scrounged what I could and called it a day.

I think I may run through another week before heading back to powerlifting type volume/intensity.

Also trying to drop from 198 lbs to 181 lbs but friends keep talking about running a 10/1 meet.  If I end up running it I'll almost certainly have to water cut and maybe do a mini-bulk a little ways out just to have a bit of strength for it.  Fortunately weigh-ins are 24 hours in advance but I don't want to have to water cut a lot if I can avoid it.

continuing to make decent progress; can perform around 5-6 psuedo-planche pushups compared with my measly 5 regular ones 7 months ago
starting to focus more on my core, originally just performed planks and let my pushups grow strength but really want to accomplish a full l-sit on parallel bars so i've been doing leg raises and V-ups to help with that

Gains on a cut continuing for my squats, at least.  Hit 440 lbs for 3 reps yesterday.  Tank was rather empty for deadlifting after that, though.  Last week I managed 445 x2, 455 x3, 405 x9.  This week?  455 x3, 465 x1, 405 x2.  Bound to happen while cutting so I'll take the squats as a win and move on.

Bench sucks.  Started up Disbrow's Deathbench on Tuesday and I'll continue that today... trying to figure out how to work all that damn 2nd day accessory work in.  Dammit, Matt.  Bench 5x5, close grip, db flat, and incline?  Killing me!  Though I probably need it.

Does anyone here still lift?

I started Stronglifts 5x5 about a year and a half ago and then switched to Starting Strength 3x5. I have never done very well with linear progression; it usually took me two or three attempts to up the weight on some lifts.

I had a 5 week layoff for an injury, so I'm working my way back up to these numbers, but these are the weights I left off at:
Squat: 292 lb x 3 x 5
Bench: 210 lb x 3 x 5
Press: 135 lb x 3 x 5
Deadlift: 350 lb x 4

Not impressive for over a year of lifting, partly because I refused to eat enough for the first six months or so. Bodyweight has gone from 150 lb to 217 lb. I want to lose some of the fat, but I don't want to lose strength.

I know iamtootallforthis used to lift, but I don't think he has in a while. If you look at pictures of him now you'll notice his muscles have really atrophied.  :(

I wrestled in high school (14 years ago) and since have kept a pretty consistent routine of lifting in some form. Unfortunately, it never really comprised of serious working out, so my body got fatter and my muscles (which atrophy quite easily) got smaller.
But now I work out around 4 times a week at about half an hour a session, and with my comparatively minimal schedule I still am in the best shape I've ever been. I thank prioritizing compound exercises and Strength Training Anatomy.

Food is also a pretty significant factor in keeping the fat off. I still eat the same amount, but try to eat "cleaner," and set aside desserts and alcohol to the weekends only.

Hnnng.. wurking out makes most peeps look worse.

Major problem is the man-bewbs which look even bigger w/ workout.

Second issue is that the Gut doesn't get any smaller for most casuals, so the overall effect is m0ar phat.

Professional bodybuilders get around man-bewb issue by having breast fat removed, (it's a 1 time surgery), so at least that's good.

-Once- the fat cells are removed, they do not grow back, so no matter how much Roids they go on, the man-bewbs will not come back.

This is not true.. It is EXTREMELY common.

In fact most men have it to some degree due to hormone laden foods such as milk and cheese, murica's favorite.

It affects 48% of teenagers.. 60% of teenage males.

Nearly 100% of male adults who are big on dat Pr0te1n.

Again, not against anyone going down Vanity-Muscle,  just be ready with $5000 for that last bit of surgery..

The increased prevalence has made it quite big business.. bewbjob for dudes.

Your first link lists 40.5% having gynecomastia.

It's Betweeen 40% and 60%,  that is the most common stat across most papers..

Point is, Man-Bewbage is very common..  Easily treated (surgery)..  and an arguably necessary part of the bodybuilding industry (As IS).

Now, there are alternatives, but we are not at liberty to discuss those.

Man bewbage as you put it is most common in obese subjects in both trials. Most cases of gyno in bodybuilding are caused due to AAS use or pre existing from puberty.

Going vegan isn't going to revert gyno. Either surgery to remove it completely or pills to counter the increase in estrogen from AAS use.

First important point..

Don't feel embarrassed or ashamed..

It is Very common.. Lots of guys wearn' Bros nowadays

If you are above the 23-25 bmi,  you're going to have a little pudge there..

The definitions are not super strict,  so it has to do with shape most of the time..

If you've got more than 0.5-1 centimeter of floof, it technically counts.

Losing weight helps, but generally, if it's very prominent, the only fix is surgery..

True gynecomastia is defined by actual breast tissue not just fat

Hrrrrmm..

Is it possible that the entirety of the _workout_ genre is a maladaptive response to societal sickness ?

At every point, we have ### resources.

Only by over-consumption would there ever be a mechanical reason to _workout_

When humans take to the plate for pleasure's sake and not purpose,  that piggishness is the over-reach   and  excess physical movement is the compensatory response.

The surge of Vanity physique is thus a counterbalancing for Gluttony

Does it say we go to hell for gluttony in dat book.. ?

I'm not really sure how to respond to this since "workout" can mean pretty much anything.
If you're talking about cardiovascular exercise (catabolic), then perhaps many people do that to compensate for eating too much, even though that's a very ineffective way to do it. Eating fewer calories is the only way to cause weight loss unless the person is teetering at maintenance Calories and just needs to burn the extra 200-300 Calories/day to be at a deficit.

If you're talking about lifting heavy things (anabolic response), there are generally three forms: bodybuilding, Olympic weight lifting, and powerlifting. Anabolic exercise require eating more food to get better at it since it causes tissue growth as an adaptation.

But, yeah, the average person who goes to the gym just to walk or run on the treadmill or fling around weights without making any progress probably is just trying to feel better for eating too much.

Strength training, makes things in everyday life easier to do and prevents injuries caused by weak bones and muscles and sinew too weak to support those weak bones. Without strength a person literally cannot interact with his environment, so it's not a vanity thing, but a necessity of physical existence.
