Title: Tai Hao: Logical or Illogical - As a Company
Post by: KHAANNN on Fri, 21 July 2017, 14:09:47
They are obviously very innovative and robust, by innovative, I mean they do copy things actively, like their new Cherry-like profile, up to this point, we are at logical

At illogical part, they don't copy the good aspects of Cherry/GMK, the consistent/bold fonts, and on production level, for some reason, they don't seem to produce the extra keycaps that became standard with every keyset run now

Am I missing something?

(The trigger: http://www.mechsupply.co.uk/product/tai-hao-cubic-keycaps - the colorscheme in the bottom keyset, pure awesomeness, yet unusable due to the lack of extras, and those bold alphas and yet thin number/character's)

Is this "new" profile the cubic one? I think that's closer to OEM isn't it? Is there some other Tai Hao profile that approximates Cherry?

They really do need to add some extra keycaps.  They're great for the price, but they don't make a function key or any media keys.   You either have to have a Filco or something old, or be satisfied with mismatched keycaps.  I wanted to put a PBT set of theirs on a Cherry G80-3000, but even a stepped caps lock key is nearly impossible to come by.

I do like Tai Hao's font.  I'm not a fan of the small F key font that Cherry uses.  I assume that GMK uses the same.

GMK uses the old cherry molds, so yes they are the same.

cubic profile has basically an identical sculpt to cherry profile with oem height.

At least they are not just trying to be another Cherry clone.

With something a little different, and the right price, they might just be on to something.

I'd say completely logical... It's typical min max principal. Getting whole new molds for the font or compatibility would cost a lot and they are thinking why do that if they're selling more than enough the way it is now...

They spent money on their new cubic profile and are hoping that that will be enough of a success. I don't see them trying to get on gmk level anytime soon

Sent from my sofa using lazy-stuff...

I would like to see Tai-Hao try to clone Devlin Q-Series.

Interesting definition of "innovation"; an unappealing keycap shape and ugly-ass colorways. They are being (a little bit) different without actually being good.

I don't recall the exact announcement, yet, their original one was OEM, this one seems to be closer to Cherry (Edit: Just saw the height info, not having inter-operability sucks, but I will give them logical/innovative credits, keeping the height would make the keycaps Costar-compatible without modifications)

Deep inside, the main issue for me is, I kind of blame chinese for lagging behind in keycap technology, instead of all the waiting, all the drama, all the $1000's wasted, we could've just ordered any keycap we wanted from Aliexpress ...
