Am I the only person slightly weirder out by non-laymen calling firearms "guns" (like a few people in this thread)? Not criticising it, but to me a gun is either a shotgun, or it's a piece of field artillery or something mounted on a boat/aircraft. Calling pistols/rifles guns feels bizarre to me.

Actually I try to use the term "gun" as least as possible since it seems to bring a weird conotation to it for people... dont even try to call something an "assault weapon" on a forum... hahaha

Guns and keyboards.  Do these two mix?

You know what doesnt mix.... twinkies and firearms.. hahaha =P

I use my keyboard to immerse myself into an in-game gun wielding lunatic. So why not mix it with some real world boomsticks?

Actually I was thinking clickclack for trades... I bet we would get some people to some firearms just to do this trade =P

A gun is a gun.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/firearm
A firearm is more specific.

That's how I've always looked at it.
Not sure I agree with the gun definition there. "Gun" has smoothbore connotations to me, except in certain circumstances (e.g. machinegun).

Hey- time to necro this topic! I went shooting for the first time about two weeks ago, and had a good time. I want to get a .22 handgun for target shooting. You guys have any preferences? I really like the looks of the Chiappa 1911-22, but some reviews worry me.

If you're looking for a good target shooting .22 you should check out the Ruger MK3.  They're fairly inexpensive, reasonably accurate out of the box and a great pistol on which to learn to shoot.

You might want to look at the Ruger SR22 also since it's been getting pretty good reviews and priced pretty good I think at $299.

SR22 has pot metal slide like the Walter P22. Other junk include Sig Mosquito, SIG trailside, Beretta Neos. None of these are durable. Don't get me started on cheap 22 conversion kits.
I vote High Standard Victor or Ruger MK2.

For an EDC, I highly recommend a Kershaw Skyline 1760. It's cheap, $35-$40 for the regular one (I have the one in the picture, and yes I know it's probably not real damascus), has pretty good steel (there is better steel but you'd pay a lot more), it comes very sharp, and stays sharp.

Nice Skyline, Beast!  I've ordered a Skyline with blue scales.  Not damascus though.  Yours probably IS real damascus.  I don't know of any other way to get that pattern.  Acid etching only has that affect... on damascus steel.  ;-)

The country of Florida :)

I didn't know I needed a proper gun case to put it in. I just didn't want to spend money buying a new case. This thing fits perfectly. I just had to add lining foam.

@mmmty & jpm804: Those 2 are both P229 (actually I own 2 of each in 9mm). I do have a West German P228. The older 9mm P229s share the same frame as the P228s. 357SIG and .40's frame are slightly wider in the magwell. They did switch to the wider frame in the newest P229-9mm and the older 9mm mags are not compatible.

\/ My 239/40, and reattaching P01 pix. Note the 03 proof mark. One of the earliest P01 imported.

Whoa, we have shooters @ Geekhack too?

I have a S&W M&P 9mm, and used to shoot once a week. I'm taking a break from firearms, as I'm currently obsessed with target archery.

Recently picked up a Spikes Jolly Roger lower, gonna go rescue it from jail on Saturday. Slowly copping pieces for my AR piece by piece. It's getting there, though. Just gotta start saving for a nice upper now. For those that shoot a lot with their AR, should I go Noveske, or BCM?

Those CZ's are nice guns. I was really considering one but realized that I wanted something with only one trigger pull.

Note: the loaded chamber indicator in the pictures are for the snapcap inside. I'd prefer no OMG BAWWW YOUR FANGAR ON THE TRIGGUR.

CZ master race. I also considered the P-01 but thought the PCR fit my needs more for a CCW. The loaded chamber indicator was a lil' undesirable but haven't had problems feeding in the 1k+ rounds I've put through it. No hiccups whatsoever! Plan on getting the slim aluminum grips to replace the stock rubber grips (even though the rubber grips feel better in my hand than my pen15) because the grips tend to get caught on the clothes when sitting and getting up.

Welcome to the club!! I've just started playing w/ guns earlier this year too. Yeah, I was a little nervous the first time I shot and it was just a .22. My friend at work who is a gun nuts got me started. He said I should start out w/ a .22 which I totally agree. You can focus on learning the basics without having to worry about the recoil.

@VesperSAINT, CZ guns are awesome. I'm looking at CZ Rami and CZ Duty - can't decide which one.

@BucklingSpring, that's a pretty nice grouping  :D

I think your choice depends on what your intentions are for the gun. Looking for a CCW? I'd go with the Rami (Rami supposedly has some feeding issues and the PCR is just better :P). If you're looking for a lighter range gun and use for home defense, I'd go with the Duty. It has suppressor options, light rails, etc.

I'm definitely getting a Rami as a possible replacement for my Sig P238 that I use for CCW. P238 is kind of too small and I can't get a good grip when I pull it out of the holster. I saw a Duty at the range and really liked it. It was the threaded barrel version w/ decocker which is exactly what I want. Time to sell more keyboards to buy more guns   :))

Congrats on the new handgun..

Started shooting the beginning of this year, and while shooting didnt scare me I was more worried about making sure I learned prop safety handling as not to cause an accident.

What scares me are some of the others I see at the range who treat shooting like a game and dont take safety seriously.

Here's my Geekhack S&W 357 Performance Center 686-6 Competitor
(Attachment Link)

Nice wheel gun... a nice guy let me shoot his S&W 686 revolver (first time)  at the range last week with an aimpoint on it and it was a blast. I never gave revolvers a second look before but after shooting one I might look into getting one possibly.
