Request for comments on a modified MTGAP layout
« on: Sun, 09 October 2022, 04:55:23 »
== Motivation ==
After trying DVORAK and COLEMAK-dh I ended up enjoying the finger rolling of the MTGAP layout. BUT while learning the MTGAP I got annoyed by the position of the 'M' and 'W' keys.

== The Layout ==
Link to Oryx configurator with layout https://configure.zsa.io/ergodox-ez/layouts/NpdQX/latest/1

Config file for genkey analyser:
Code: [Select]
MTGAPmw
j p o u x k d l c q
i n e a , v h t s r
y b z . ; / f m g w
0 1 2 3 3 4 4 5 6 7
0 1 2 3 3 4 4 5 6 7
0 1 2 3 3 4 4 5 6 7

== Setup ==
I developed this layout on my ergodox. The layout might work better on ortholinear/matrix keyboards.
I used https://semilin.github.io/genkey/ analyser to help me tweak the layout.
This layout also scored on TOP for some input on these analysers:

== Request ==
If you use MTGAP or another layout focused on rolling fingers give this layout a try.
Also if you know of better/more popular layout analysers, check and share the results of this layout. Or just share the analysers so I can run them myself.

The layout looks quite good for two key reasons.
  • Alternating hands by having all the vowels and some low-frequency consonants on one side.
  • Reduced lateral movements by de-emphasizing the two middle columns.

With that said, the only weakness seems to be N, a high-frequency consonant, being on the same side as the vowels. You can try "opinion anyone" and see my point.
