[GB] KAT Iron - In production
« on: Wed, 29 July 2020, 23:45:31 »
Colours approved
First I am a terrible photographer, this is captured in my office with warm light but does a great job of showing the gradient.(GMK caps in pic are from GMK Voyage) The rust colour in these pics is a bit off, it looks amazing, is such a great colour, just tricky to photograph (for me) I think anyone using the Rust will be super happy  :thumb:  After Round 1 I had approved 4 colours, and after Round 2 I am approving the remaining 4. The only major change from the reference RALs that I made was to lighten the 2nd darkest colour, as in renders it was showing up different enough, but in real life it was nearly impossible to tell. Keyreative did an amazing job lightening it just enough so that it works perfectly. We dont have any finalized dates but I am told I should know be able to share more details in April. Sorry for the delay, thanks for your patience and I will keep everyone posted on the progress

Better rust pic - shout out toMochi’s Cables for the amazing cable to match in the shot

Wrist Rests

When I saw a new "maker" of wooden wrist rests who was local to me I wanted to see if he could do something to match KAT Iron, well I think he nailed it

Since I first saw MarbleKeebs work I wanted to collab with them. And after some discussion and an amazing find they have found a marble type that is pretty much designed for KAT Iron, including rust lines in the marble (appearances will vary as this is a natural product)

Hey, I noticed that the regular Alphas kit on Deskhero is priced at $59CAD, and I wonder if this is an error, since it's different from the pricing chart and more than Phoenician Alphas, etc ($43CAD).
There is also no pricing difference between the Alphas on other vendor sites.

Update: it was a mistake, and they're going to fix it!

Hey everyone, I'm new to the hobby and this will be my first KAT set. If I need a 7u spacebar for my keyboard, which set would I have to buy? Would Alphas be enough? It doesn't seem to be labeled anywhere. Thanks in advance!

Sorry for slow reply busy day. So the mods kit has the 7u spacebar and the alphas has the 6.25 spacebar

I am assuming you would be grabbing one of each to fill out a standard board (from 60 to TKL)

If your not sure let us know what board you have or jump over to the discord where myself or a ton of others would be willing to help  :thumb:

nvm, that's the novelty FE not the salvun FE - figured it out =)

Hello !

I make the wrist rests out of marble to match this KAT Iron keycaps set.
I just got the photo of the marble slab ordered to make those.

A light grey color, with no big rusty veins but only small traces :
248930-0

The final design will be the same as my currently available black marble wrist rests :

Yeah rust I suspected would be slow and steady, maybe a big push near the end for rust but overall very pleased with the numbers!! And thank you!!

nvm, that's the novelty FE not the salvun FE - figured it out =)

No worries glad you got it figured out, maybe stay tuned for a possible render with the actual Salvun's no promises but might make it happen!

Attention ERGO users!!!

I need your help, it was brought to my attention that some of the colours in the ERGO kit will not maintain the gradient look the set intended, This was my bad as I made the assumption that Row profile should be made to match the colours but for Ergo that doesnt work everywhere.

So at this point I am planning to change the Ergo kit but want to get feedback here if you support, or if there is a reason it shouldnt happen
Please also feel free to jump over to the discord server for a wider discussion

Here is the current kit

This would yield a board layout like this, which does not really maintain the gradient look as I would hope

Changing the kit to be like this

Would yield a board layout more like this (ignore legends and lack of accents this is just to help visualize

So Ergo users please let me know if this makes sense!!! Thank you and sorry for any confusion

I have a question about KAT's vertical 2U keycaps.  Are the numpad "+" and "Enter" exactly the same shape, like how SA profile is?  Or are they two different shapes, like how Cherry profile is?

So numpad "Enter" and "+" are different shapes.  Are both vertical 2U keycaps in the Novelty kit "Enter" keys?  In the kit picture they span R2 (home row) and R1 (shift row), which isn't "Enter" or "+".

Great catch dvorcol this should be numpad enter and should sit one row lower to start at the bottom row

So numpad "Enter" and "+" are different shapes.  Are both vertical 2U keycaps in the Novelty kit "Enter" keys?  In the kit picture they span R2 (home row) and R1 (shift row), which isn't "Enter" or "+".

You are correct. This will be addressed in the final production files that get sent to Keyreative. Thanks for catching that.

I want the phoenician keycaps! I only just discovered that a) they exist b) somebody is making them, and c) I missed the boat by several months. If there is another run of these amazing caps, how do I make sure I get notified?

All vendors will have extras, you should follow or reach out to your regional vendor and just make sure you keep up with when they announce extras  :thumb: Glad you like the phoenicians, was such a fun group effort putting those together!!

That is good to know! Regionally, I'm USA (California) so I'll keep my eye on TX. Thank you! These are just gorgeous. I was thinking Phoenician keycaps would be amazing. I recently traced back the roots of the Latin and English letters to Phoenician and discovered a wonderful trove of fascinating twists and turns and derivations. Well done!

You will likely see this across a number of completed KAT GB posts, but thanks to Eski on the KAT Lich GB thread he has shared the very large update from Keyreative posted on ZFrontiers website.

https://en.zfrontier.com/blogs/project-updates/202101-kat

While this could lead to some delays, it is very re-assuring and to me shows how serious Keyreative has taken all the complaints/issues and they are doing everything and more to vastly improve their entire production operation.
As soon as I have more details specific to Iron you can be sure I will be sharing here, and on my discord. Thanks for your patience and support.

No updates. Given Keyreactive’s accuracy on updates, im not sure we’re missing out, and FBC’s been good telling us concrete milestones. KAT Atlantis ran last March and hasn’t shipped yet, and per Tyson is likely to fall to Q3. Iron ran 5? months later with plenty of sets in between. Would be shocked if this was in my hands Q3 and wouldn’t be surprised at all if it didn’t arrive in Q4 either. Least it isn’t behind KAT Mizu…

Sorry all, there really hasnt been a lot of update to provide but I should still comment here, Q3 is what I am being told loosely based on the sets in front of KAT Iron. My apologies for the delay and poor updates frequency here. As soon as I have better info I will share immediately

This is my first GB but this kind of communication doesn't seem normal to me. Is it normal in the community?
I mean I don't have a problem with waiting. Even for this long. But not knowing nor being reassured actually bugs me.
It is quite ****ty from the people who we paid money because we believed in them :blank:

It's not typical. In this case, its the manufacturer, Keyreative (KAT and KAM sets), that is not communicating much.

I have an update, sorta bad news but their is a bright side. I received samples of the set for review (which I applaud Keyreative/Zfrontier for doing this for me/us  )  The set I think looks fantastic, super happy with things overall, novelties look amazing, Phoenicians, WOW, so good.
Now you are like ok the bad? So the numrow/R4 colour wasnt right. I actually didnt notice it right away as I needed the excitement of having the set wear off a bit. Something did seem off but I couldnt quite place it. Then when going back for a more critical review, I caught it. The caps came out a warmer colour that didnt match the sample/RAL or my vision. The other, I will say smaller issue is the R1 shift row is super  close to the bottom row, it doesnt look bad and I will take a big part of that blame with the bottom row and the shift row being challenging colours for PBT. That said keyreative is re-working that row as well to provide a better differentiation from the bottom row.
I know this set has been a challenge, and KAT sets a challenge overall, but I want to be very clear here, the Keyreative team has been extremely committed to getting this right, and to provide a quality product.  It is taking time but I hope I speak for you all in saying another bit of time (i dont have timelines sorry) is worth it to get it right. Sorry for the long post, and bad news but we are getting closer, the set does exist it just needs a little sprucing up. Thanks for your patience, kindness and commitment to this set and me as a designer! It is greatly appreciated

Here were the things that happened afterwards:
- Feedbacks provided to Keycreative and zF almost immediately
- RAL chips sent over
   => multiple lockdowns happened
- zF told me that Keycreative is working at reduced capacity but the sample is still being made based on feedback regardless of the chips being received or not.

Long story short...they are working on the new samples. The thing we didn't foresee was multiple lockdowns happened since the conversation happened.

What the hell is the point of ordering from a proxy vendor, if I could've just ordered directly from ZFrontier and receive the product literal months ahead of everyone else? Regardless of the extra shipping cost, having to wait months after others have received their order is so stupid. Guess next time I'll just order straight from China and cut out the middle man.

Here are some photo to let you guys know you'd be getting.

I've seen worse from them, but still not the quality I'd expect from the price you pay TBH.
Colors are definitely more consistent than past sets, not too much weird shines but is still present here and there,
and alignment issues are all over the place, not the worst, but bad for sure.
Those shift keys were the worst in my set.
Edit: "Right" is also pretty bad too.

meh, I'd use them. but disappointed since KAT Space Cadet I received was pretty good.
Now I'm worried about my refined.

It's more like "NO QC spin the wheel for what comes out the machines" TBFH.
I bet all the "QC pass" stickers are for the plastic package not the actual keycaps.
To be fair their plastic package is far better than GMK garbage. I give them that at least.

“QC? Pass.” :'(

In all seriousness though, if reverse dyesub legends are so hard to align, someone really should try a different method. These WoB keycaps are dyed and then have the legends lasered, so they should be just as durable as reverse dyesub, with the main downside being that you can probably feel the legends where some material has been taken off. Well… I’ve got some KAT blanks I can yeet for science anyway…

Goddammit. I should have never gone in on this set. Been waiting an eternity for this **** QC.

Oof... Maybe they're "Hand-made" 😞

Got mine in today and christ, the Ergo set has a serious case of "Two left shoes" syndrome. ended up with a pretty scuffed setup due to it, cause basically none of the vertical ones are mirrored right. After Atlantis turned out OK I figured it'd be at least sorta ok QC wise, but alas.

Time to just pretend this profile doesn't exist anymore for future sets

Got mine in today. Not sure if it was a update I didn't know about but KAT does not have a homing bump anymore, just scoop. In the gb I saw bumps and my KAT alpha had bumps.  A bit disappointing. Colors are ok, I didn't check anything else. Vendor and designers are great but I will pass on KAT profile from now on, way too long of a wait to be disappointed

They have both moulds, but the bumps tend to look really bad in a reverse-dyesub context unfortunately. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was an intentional later change.

I got my keycaps in the mail a little while ago but just now had the spare time to open them up and put them on a keyboard. Overall I'm happy enough with them, but the Esc key in my Ergo kit is the wrong row profile. Not sure which one it is; maybe R5? Pretty annoying regardless, and I'm unclear what to do to get my correct keycap.

EDIT: Nevermind, this is my bad, not Keyreative's. The issue is that the ESC switch on my keyboard is north-facing, unlike the rest which are all south-facing. When comparing the keycaps on a flat table, there is no issue with the ESC keycap.

KAT Refined has homing bumps on both WoB and BoW.  Both look great.  Even if they weren't 'perfect', I'd much rather the homing bar keys than the scooped homing keys... the homing bumps are still going to look better than the tiny little strips of grip tape that I put on them.

<Scrambles to check my own Ergo set!>
Mine's fine.? How'd they manage to screw up some and not others?
Never a dull moment with Keyreative.

Update: I'm a dummy and didn't realize my ESC switch is north-facing, and the rest of the keyboard is south-facing. There is no issue with the keycap itself, which I discovered when I went to take pics to send to my vendor.

I FINALLY got my KAT Iron Phoenicians from Mekibo. I have wanted these since the pandemic, but missed the initial GB, so I got them on the extra sale. I am over the moon. I bought both the rust and regular and mixed and matched. These are gorgeous. Thank you.

PS I would say that my only "complaint" is the lack of the bump on the "f" and "j" keys. But I'm already getting used to it. TY TY TY
