Monarch by King Boards

EXTRAS ARE NOW AVAILABLE!!!

Group Buy links below are now live! GB will be starting December 5th at 11am EST and running through December 20th (unless all slots are claimed earlier).
I've decided to go with a FCFS style for this first GB. Based on volume and demand, I will alter this approach for the next GB if needed.
There will be 200 slots available of the Standard kit and 50 slots available for the Limited Edition.

Standard Kit Link                    Limited Edition Link

Taeha Types completed a build stream December 8th at 9pm EST.

Background

Please review the IC here https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=108826.msg2962758#msg2962758 for any and all background information.

Description

Monarch is a WKL 65% with a separated arrow cluster, rotary encoder knob, and interchangeable inserts. (Initially I was only going to offer WKL but the amount of requests I received to also make WK has led me to offer that option as well).

I wanted the board to be customizable based on the users preference and the keysets they had on hand.
For example if you have been rockin' GMK Striker for a few months and want to change it up, I thought it would be great if you could change the look of your board as well to match GMK 8008 if you're throwin' that on!

The interchangeable inserts is really what I set out to create because I like to switch my keysets frequently and I was too often left with only a couple options that I could ever match to my board due to its color.

Simply pop the case open, swap out the insert to a new color, and you've completely changed the look of your board!

The rotary knob has grown to become something I really love on a board because it gives me easy quick control of so many different things.
Each kit will come with 1 brass knob and you'll have the choice of one of 4 colors (Gold, Black, Silver, Carbon Gray).

Monarch deploys a 7.7o typing angle for a comfortable typing position anchored by an o-ring burger mount.

The front lip height has been kept at a low 17.5mm for a smooth transition.

Having a separate arrow cluster not only increases usability but also shows off more of the stunning insert colors.

The board will also come with a 2mm custom internal liner for increased sound dampening.

Each kit will also be shipped with a carrying case custom designed for Monarch.

A portion of the large brass weight is visible from the back of the case but also spans a large portion of the bottom of the case with a beautiful engraving of the King Boards logo.

The PCB is QMK and VIA compatible. It also has ISO compatibility however the plates offered will not support it. I will make the plate files publicly available later on so members can cut their own if they want.

This design also utilizes a daughterboard to enable a symmetrical center-location port.

Plates will be available in Aluminum and Brass.

There will be 2 versions of Monarch available. Standard and Limited Edition.

This board is a beastly beauty weighing in at about 7.5lbs for the Standard version and a whopping 9.4lbs for the Limited Edition.

This image shows the slightly modified bottom to allow for easier access
to the daughterboard and better cable management.

FAQ

  • Any ISO?
The PCB will support ISO and I will make the plate file public to allow anyone to get their own ISO plate cut.
  • Can I get a custom color?
    Sorry not at this time.
  • Can I get a custom finish?
    Sorry not at this time.
  • How long until delivery?
If you've been a part of GB's before you know the normal timelines but I've made every effort to get this completed quicker then normal. Most vendors use Sea shipping to receive their parts whereas I'm doing Air so the delivery time should be cut down by around a month. I would ballpark about 10-12 weeks based on my relationship with my manufacturers with the obvious COVID delays always possible.
  • Is it Hotswap?
    Sorry not at this time.
  • Will I be able to purchase extra pcb's, plates, inserts, etc.?
Yes. They should be listed above but if I've missed something you're interested in, please let me know.
  • Can I please get a brass insert?
Sorry but they are only part of the Limited Edition.
  • How will I pay?
If you are one of the first 200/50 then I will send you an invoice to be paid within 24hours of receipt. If payment is not made within the timeframe, I will offer the kit to another buyer. A separate invoice will be sent out once the kit is ready to be shipped to avoid hassles with people changing addresses.
  • Is there a Discord?
Sorry but at this time there is not. I should have some more time coming up soon in order to maintain a channel, at which time I would notify everyone of its creation.
  • How will you handle updates?
I will post updates to this thread at the very moment I have them. Rest assured I will keep everyone updated as the process moves along and the current status of everything.

I really hope you enjoy the design! I look forward to getting them in the hands of everyone that wants them.

Hi there!
Sorry about that but yes the Silver option has been removed as I needed to trim down some of the possibilities due to all the choices already :)
Best of luck on the entry!

The insert idea is honestly fantastic! Do you plan to support more insert colors sold separately in the future? Are you open to offering E-white in any future run of this board, or is it only for limited edition in the first round?

Hi mate!

Great question!
Yes I intend to offer more colors at a future time. Probably like 2-3 months after everyone has their boards I will make a posting for more colors to be ordered.
I know people's preferences change and the idea is to be adaptable with this keyboard so I will definitely be doing that.
I'll most likely post a poll question to see what colors people would like to see and then just produce more inserts.

I can't answer the question about e-white for a subsequent round at this time because I need to see if the demand is there first.
I also have other projects in the works that I want to get into production.

If the board is well received and people would like more of them, I have no problem running it again with e-white as an option for the standard kit.

Thanks for the interest and have a great day!

I’ve received a lot of questions about the brass and wanted to post that PVD is not option for this gb unfortunately. We’ll see in the future but I have mixed feelings about it personally.

Sorry for my ignorance, if the brass is not PVD, does it mean that it will get rusted easily?

It won’t rust, it will patina over time giving character. PVD is a very specific and expensive process that can yield excellent results if done perfectly but in my opinion the cost isn’t worth the gain.

I for one love the feel and texture of sandblasted brass.

I see, but the implication is that as long as I'm fast enough to come back I can get the other one on a second attempt? Or is it 1 LE per person?

It’s a shame your logo isn’t the Monarch from Ventura Brothers.  I’m sure that would have brought a whole different set of issues though.  Anyways... gl to everyone in the GB.

Haha that would’ve been funny.

Monarch is only the name of the first board though. My subsequent ones aren’t butterfly related names :)
Hence the Lion logo.

Yes the other member is correct that e-white top and bottom was only available for the limited edition.
E-white insert is available for the standard edition but not top and bottom. Sorry about that if it was unclear.

Well, the LE results aren't out yet (I think and I hope because if they are, then I took the L) and the Standard GB runs until the 20th, so it probably might take some time.

Standard edition is still open at the moment so if you entered it already, then you’ve secured a spot.
Thank you so much for the support!

Howdy, the listing mentions that each kit will also be shipped with a carrying case, but there's also a case listed as an extra for $20. Is the $20 for a fancier version of the case? Looking forward to seeing one of these in person, the photos and renders look super nice!

The cases are the same. The option just exists to purchase an additional case if desired.

I'd like one just like this, please: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/IlWA3dTX_8bs3V1giopxsXhe__Hl8iddUNrdbqu4rcnWZT5PRgnbJM6HuqYPnM2XCapyLMmM19jFOLZ96d-MwyQmAQoGlXUo22erhcL2S8Mset_HHZHpjzqjp8IviQ=w740

https://i.imgur.com/sNtFC6p.jpg

That can only be attained if you you purchase an LE version with the e-white case.
If the demand is high enough, I’ll possibly open up e-white to the standard edition in the future whenI run other colors for inserts. Sorry about that.

All Standard Edition slots have been accounted for as well! As is typical in a GB, some people entered duplicates, and some others haven't responded to their invoices so there are a small number of spots that have been opened back up. The Standard Edition form is now back open and I will close it down again once I have these slots filled.
Invoices for these will be going out over the course of the next 12 hours.
Please remember you have 24 hours to make payment from the time of invoice receipt or the slot will be opened up to another member.

Thank you all for the tremendous support!
I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

I'm not too well-versed on these things too haha. But I think clear coating is enough. Maybe DoCallMeKing can help chime in.

Clearcoating is the most typical treatment in order to seal brass. PVD is quite expensive but when done right looks fantastic. A cheaper option is just to grab some spray sealant from your local home improvement store.

Hey all,

I think I am going to coat it with this:

https://www.everbritecoatings.com/jewelry.htm

This is meant to protect brass jewelry and is skin safe (figure this is important because it will be touched frequently), hope this helps!

If you do a second round, will you add anything to differentiate the R1 boards from the R2 boards for exclusivity sake? or maybe completely different colors? just a thought.

It's still very early to tell if there would be a round 2 or not but there would for sure be completely different color options for the inserts and some other small modifications I would do to differentiate the rounds.

Yes this is the place to keep an eye out for them. But it wouldn't be until after receipt of shipment by all the GB participants.

I have spoke to my manu about this. We're seeing if we can come to an agreement. Also I would like to keep the symmetry of the weight as much as possible so trying to find a position that I like is also an issue.

There is no discord channel at the moment. I’m in the process of getting a website up and running which will be a place to look for updates as well as here in geekhack. Discord channel is on the horizon as well but my first priority is the website.

One of the pcb's on one my prototypes have the millmax in there and its working perfectly. :)

No need. They do not impact the bottom of the case so there is no space issue.

Do you know how 'thick' is the spacing between pcb and the case? In case I wanna buy foam myself, how thick would you suggest?

Making your own Silicon "pad" works really well. You can just pour it in till it reaches the desired thickness. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XHNDNJD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When you say the PCB and the case, do you mean under the pcb and above the floor of the case? (I only ask because the other question was about foam between the pcb and the plate.)
If you're truly asking about between the pcb and the bottom of the case, you don't need foam there as the kit already comes with a custom cut one :)

If you're asking about between the pcb and the plate, I would suggest 4mm foam because it'll compress slightly when you sandwich it between the pcb and the plate.

I know building a website is easier then ever now-a-days, but that is an awesome website. Very well done and put together.
And that blue and red combo keeb would look SO good with some Laser on it..

Any updates on the plate files?

Was looking at getting a carbon fibre plate cut but the GB for it is only running for the next 2 weeks so wanted to know if I had time.

Hey mate!
We can throw out rough estimations but they will be just that, rough, until we have confirmation of shipping to us.
We're very hopeful that shipping to us will begin at the end of next week or at the latest the following week.
Then we would just need time to QC and then we can start shipping out to you folks as long as everything looks good.
This is very fluid though and we will try to communicate everything as soon as we know.
Thanks very much and we'll shoot you an update soon once we have some details.
Have a great day!

Not positive at the moment. There will definitely be an opportunity to purchase different color inserts for the buyers of round 1.

We have other projects in the works that we also want to push out so we'll see how it slots in.

We'll do our best to accommodate everyone though.

Plus there should be a few extras once the GB has completed. :)

Yea as I'm sure you're aware, shipping prices have skyrocketed along with everything else due to covid. Even before covid, international shipping was always expensive from the US to anywhere else besides Canada/Mexico.
Also, the shipping prices we are sending in the invoices already include us paying a portion of the shipping cost.
We didn't feel like the buyers should have to pay extra due to the pandemic so we are eating some of shipping amount.
Plus the Monarch is a very heavy board, especially the LE. Weight works against us when shipping unfortunately.

Yep I understand. Was thinking given the circumstances (COVID, from US and LE weight) it would have been around 150 USD or so. Glad that it's much cheaper than I thought, but still haha. I appreciate the gesture.

Hey! I've received my Monarch and I'm quite happy with it overall but I seem to have a slight issue with the encoder that persists even with the extra one I replaced the included one with. Best way to explain it is that the right turn would also occasionally actuate the left turn action. It seems to be prominent on the end of the turn as if stopping in between detents and having that slight turn back causes this. For example, I'd use Via to make left turn be 'A' and right turn be 'B' ; a long right turn would sometimes result in something like 'bbbbbbbbbbbbbba' and rapid, successive ones would result in 'bbbbaabbbbbaabbbbbba' or something similar. Like I've said, I've replaced the original with an extra and the issue still persists. Do you think it may be an issue with the encoder itself (both Alps), the pcb/firmware, or possibly something may have happened when I soldered the encoder? Any guidance would be very appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work!

There's for sure something wrong with the programming of the rotary encoder, it jumps back and forth quite a lot. Even more noticeable if you bind it to page up/down.

From what you are describing it sounds like the encoder is actually occasionally actuating in-between detents. If this is the case we should be able to make some adjustments to the firmware in order to correct this behavior.
We will speak to our PCB designer to investigate this further. Thank you for the information.
We will report back as soon as we have something concrete.
Thank you again!

We've isolated the problem and have a solution in place to resolve it.
We're just completing some more local testing before we deem it ready for distribution.
The encoder will act much more responsive with these latest changes.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention!
We'll be in contact soon with our official update.

We've done some more local testing and also reached out to a few buyers to confirm our fix and the results are very positive.
In order to get the encoder functioning more exactly, you will need to go to our site and download the latest firmware to flash onto your pcb.
The file is located on our Files page at https://kingkbs.com/pages/files , it is labeled "BIN file for flashing".
Once you download it, you'll need to use QMK Toolbox to flash it to your pcb and then you should be all set.
If anyone is unclear on the process, please reach out to us and we can help walk you through it.
We'll also be putting up language on our website with step by step directions on how to proceed.
Thanks very much!

Is this update just for the VIA firmware?  Do I need to make any tweaks if I use QMK?  Just want to make sure before I build mine.  I only use QMK and not VIA.  That's why I'm asking.

Glad it arrived for you!
Sorry but we don't have a build guide to offer at the moment.
Most of it should be straightforward like any other build, but we do recommend inserting the JST cable into the pcb before soldering since it can get a little tight right there once a switch is installed.
As for the JSON file, you shouldn't need it since VIA is updated to contain Monarch now.
We do recommend that you download the file called "BIN file for flashing" and flash that firmware to the pcb so the encoder is more precise, accurate, and consistent.
If you have any problems or questions just let us know.
Thanks a lot!
