Title: Offsite storage
Post by: xsphat on Fri, 25 July 2008, 11:31:42
I've been looking for a place to store files online and I found a few places that are cheap / free for a couple or a few GB of storage (which is plenty for me since it's all .doc files). I'm currently trying out Mozy while I'm waiting for an invite to Dropbox.

Does anyone use one of these services? If so, let me know what your experiences with are and which ones to avoid. The only thing I honestly care about is stability and Mac compatibility.

This may be useful

http://www.rsync.net/

I don't use it though. But it integrates with the Mac OS.

rsync is a really cool tool, btw

how about using Gmail.  I know it's meant to be for email, but it seems that it's pretty good for remote storage too.

i've used something similar for Windows, and it worked really well.

I've been doing the gmail thing for a while but it kind of isn't what I need it to be. Mozy is supposed to back up my links and my Writing achieve automatically every week, so I hope it works out the way they say it does.

But dropbox looks really cool. Does anyone use it?

iMav gave me an invite for it awhile back but unfortunately, it doesn't work with linux. I was not able to use it.

Well, if iMav happens to have another invite, I'd be glad to take it off his hands. Did you find out about charges even though it alienates Linux users?

And let me point out that even though I don't use Linux, I think it's crap that there isn't more support for it, especially in light of it's growing user base (which is partly due to Vista blowing ass so bad).

as a linux user you get used to it. but thats ok, that rsync.net site I sent you looks promising, but I haven't tried it. It supports all OS's too.

I tried box.net (http://box.net) for the trial period, it's okay and they provide WebDAV access, so you can mount your online directory in your local directory tree using davfs (http://dav.sourceforge.net/) on linux.

Why did you use the Comic Sans font for this post ? My eyes are bleeding.

Because I, specifically, wanted to annoy you.  ;)

I dunno, I was just goofing around with fonts that day.

along these lines for those of you who are paranoid about the privacy of your data TrueCrypt  (http://www.truecrypt.org/)is really awesome, I've been using it awhile.  It's very user friendly.

I use TrueCrypt on a 100MB virtual volume to store sensitive data.  very easy to use.

I’ve still got 56K so it’s an impossibility for me.

TrueCrypt isn't specifically for online storage, it's cross platform and allows you to encrypt files and volumes (even physical disks).  You choose how big you want your volume to be.

In case someone was wondering, dropbox now has a linux client.
