Title: Dressing Up Keyboards with Keycaps
Post by: litster on Sun, 11 September 2011, 23:51:10
Been playing with keycap combinations to get something more unique.

First, is my black Filco with cherry MX red, wearing black Cherry double shots mixed with Dolch alpha and function keycaps and black Moogle Kit.  Just put this together today.  I should probably mix in more Dolch keycaps for the 6-pack above the arrow keys.  I thought this looks pretty nice already.

Second is something that I have had for a while.  It is my Realforce 87UB variable weight SE1700 wearing yellow Topre keycaps from Korea and red WASD from RiGS who got it from Finland or Sweden, I think.  Notice the smaller font size for the red keys.

I noticed something about the Topre keycaps and it is that some yellow ones from the Realforce 91UBY can't fit the Realforce 87U because of the stem.

I absolutely adore the looks of your Filco board! I would really like to do something similar with my Filco but I am not sure how to go about obtaining compatible keycaps. Even more - I use the UK layout.... Now I wish I bought an ASCII layout board... Just so that finding different key caps would be easier.

Any tips on how I could obtain key caps?

That is one classy looking Filco. I'd love a set of Dolch caps for my Poker. :D

Yes, some of the red keycaps for the front row I got from RiGS don't fit the 87U.  Don't remember for sure off the top of my head, but I think the left CTRL key for some reason has its switch turned 90 degrees, making it incompatible with 87U.  I bet the 91UBY has the old style 86U layout as well.

Best would be to get a STANDARD set from Round 4 group buy and add an UK kit.  You can also check on ebay for UK and DE to hunt for ISO Cherry keyboards.  Look for the letter H in the model number for double shots.  I rarely see ISO cherry boards on US ebay.  There is an Italian ISO Cherry board on US ebay though.

The easiest is to get the Round 3 STANDARD set in the Round 4 group buy again.  7bit is making the Round 3 set available in Round 4.  This set is a replica of the Dolch keycaps.

Here is a white Filco MX brown with black Cherry double shots and RGB modifiers from the recent group buy.

The next one is my IBM Spacing Saving Keyboard with Unicomp's RGB moodifiers and yellow WASD keys.

The 3rd one is another white Filco MX red with OxyCleaned Wyse terminal keyboard's double shot keycaps.  The yellow arrow keycaps are one of my favorites.

I lusted after a white Filco + R3 set for a while, but after seeing keyboardlover's pics, I gotta say that white 2-shots on a black Filco looks better.  That look is my current goal.

Aww, that is such a beauty! Great job! (The other keyboards of yours are also pretty but I have only a Filco myself so I look at those most ^^) The only thing i dont like is the default "sculpted" windows keys, I would like to replace mine...

Which of the keys are "OxyCleaned Wyse terminal keyboard's double shot keycaps" ? Is it the lighter gray ones for the letters? Those are really sexy! How could I obtain a set from those as well? Would you be so kind to link to the "Group buy round 4" that you mentioned in your previous response to me? I searched in the group buy section of the forum but there were so many threads and I wasnt sure which one you were referring to.
Thanks!

This is the link to Group Buy Round 4: http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?20485-Double-shot-replacements-ROUND-FOUR!

The lighter keys (alpha + numeric) were very yellow after years of exposure of sunlight.  They returned to their original color (or much closer to it) after spending a day in OxyClean solution under the sun.  OxyClean info on these keys:

Yeah in fact the keycaps doesn't reflect the layout perfectly. I use basically the same layout as the HHKB with more buttons on the bottom row and hasu's frimware to get some mouse keys on some function layer.

Dude, I would kill for mouse buttons on my function layer (especially middle mouse button).  How did you do this?  Is this a Poker?

It's a doxKb, see the link in my sig for more details. I do this with a teensy controller on my custom keyboard.

Thanks; it needs some different keys on it like the SC2 mods and esc keys and maybe a different couple of doubleshots here and there but other than that I am happy with the checkerboarding theme; came out exactly how I wanted it to.

WYSE keycaps on my WASD.

Some irregularities:
On the WYSE, escape is next to 1, and `~ is next to the spacebar. Escape is a little off, and the `~ certainly is.

LIkewise, the backspace isn't long enough. I took another key.

The WYSE has an extra key on the numpad area, so the only vertical key is enter. I took another 2-unit key and put it on vertically. It's a little "flatter" than backspace, and works out well.

The WYSE has function 1-16. Since I never use Printscreen, scroll lock, or pause (and I know where they are when I need them) I kept with the originals, and added the extra function keys. Looks nice.

I can replace some more of the keys with others, but they don't match well. I rather like the look. I have enough to replace the insert, home, page up, delete, end, page down cluster, but not all the same height.

Also, I kept the original WYSE keys for numlock, /,*,and -. I think they look nicer, and I pretty much only use the tenkey for typing numbers.

Problem is, it's QWERTY. I plan to use it for gaming, or take it to work.

The arrow keys are excellent.

WYSE keycaps are a lot shorter than the normal WASD ones. These are doubleshot, but not the Full doubleshot you get on older WYSE boards. They are thinner than my WASD keys, often.

They are also yellow. I have some Hydrogen peroxide that's bleaching the THICK WYSE ones I have, but it's taking ages. (It started out as 3%, and was boiled down to about 9%). This's up next.

Also, the spacebar is a full 7.25 inches, or 18.5 cm. It's like 10.3 units or something. I've got the end in the peroxide to see what the effects are, and act as a stir rod.

---

Sorry for cellphone pictures, it looks a lot sharper in real life. I really like the blue font on grey body doubleshots, though. And those arrow keys, MAN.

Glad to see you got your arrow keys. :)  I had one of these arrive today as well.  The caps were filthy though.  They're not coming near my fancy keyboards until they've been sanitized.

They look great on your WASD!

Yeah, the other, yellower ones are getting that now. I read all those when I went out shopping. That's why I boiled off the water to increase the concentration of the H2O2. I also got liquid oxyclean accidentally, but I added some anyway.

liquid OxyClean might be better.  I got some patches on some keys from my second batch.  I think they were caused by un-desolved OxyClean.

Thanks Playtrumpet! I rather like it too.

I think it'll be better when the super thick ones get done Retr0brite-ing.

This works out, as I use the board mainly at my non-work computer (there's something about buckling springs that sets a "working" mood) and Since it's QWERTY, that helps when typing in things while gaming.

My friend from Novosibirsk Russia sent them to me. He found them on some old speccy clone computer that was gathering dust and convinced the shop owner to sell just the keycaps. He initially made it sound like tripleshots, but they are still pretty nice in spite of the molds being rough. Some of the edges around the sides are a little lumpy. Still for $10 they are pretty outstanding since things like this are pretty hard to source. They took a long time to arrive, were sent out to me on 13 August and I just got them Saturday. Russia post is so slow

DSI tends to fly under the radar these days.  Back in the beginning of GH, they were one of the great hopes in mechanical keyboards.  The Modular was supposed to be a coup in keyboarding with customizable attachments, but delays really kept this 'board from taking off.

T'morrow, once they dry, I'm putting my WYSE thick doubleshots on my WASD instead of my WYSE thin ones.

The tenkey, and arrow keys are still thin, as the thick ones are retrobriting now (batch 3!)

Also, DAMN, peroxide does burn! My thumb and forefinger are almost completely white, and get a worrisome tingling, but it was worth it!

Crappy cellphone camera. Used all my money on keyboard and accessories.

I liked Ripster's simple white on black theme so I got some white PBT engraved keycaps from qtan's store.

I really like the textured feel of the PBT caps over the stock Filco's  smooth caps. Now I'm just waiting on the Novelty Doubleshot group buy to  go through.

Just wondering if anyone knows where I can get some PBT WASD or Arrow keys in yellow and/or red.

My keyboard at work. Originally a Compaq MX-11801 with Cherry MX Browns. Numpad and trackball cut off, keys moved and lines rerouted. Then I painted the case white and dressed up with these black Cherry double-shot key caps that I got from BiNiaRiS.
I would have liked to change also the bottom row, but matching 7 unit bars and 1.5 unit and keys are quite rare, existing only on some rare OEM version of the G81-3000, from what I know.
For a while I used flat and key caps from Tipro, but I found that they looked a bit cartoonish.

Hello everyone.  I'm new to this forum, although I've been reading it for awhile.  I'm finally ready to take the plunge and get my first mechanical keyboard.

I plan to get two keyboards eventually.  I would like to get the Ducky Cherry MX Blue that is backlit for home use.  For work, I think I'm going to try the Red MX Cherry switch.  I think I'll get the one made by Rosewill.

For work, I don't need a backlit version so I'm going to customize the keycaps.  I'm trying to decide on some layouts by WASDkeyboards and this is one of my favorite layouts so far:

I hope this will be the start of a long love affair with custom keyboards.

FYI:  I did order my dad a Unicomp keyboard with buckling springs.  He grew up using typewriters, so I figure this would give him that feel and noise since he does a lot of typing.  He absolutely loves it.  I tried it out too, and think the feel is fantastic.

I'm thinking about grabbing the white dyesub pbt's from the group buy with red font for my black 104 filco with reds.

I know white keycaps on a black board look amazing, but thoughts on the red font?

Looks sharp, I think.

the RF would look better if the f keys went 4 orange, 4 black, 4 orange. the checkered look takes away from the classiness IMO.

My WASD Keyboards with browns.  I went a little overboard with the key options, and ordered a mix of blank, engraved, and laser printed keycaps.  I have recently replaced the engraved letter and number keys in the picture with printed ones to match the others.  It looks more cohesive for sure.

The custom print option at WASD Keyboards is very slick.  Unless I'm mistaken, there is a $5.00 charge for a custom image (like a set up fee), but then you can get any number of keys printed with that image by paying just the base price of the key; but I might be wrong so don't quote me on that.  I probably should have gotten the entire function row with the troll face guy, but wasn't smart enough at the time of ordering.

Hey! I bought the keyboard from 'http://thekeyboardcompany.com' and I am planning to get a blank black set from there when they are back in stock. I highly recommend The Keyboard Co. It's hard to get special caps from the UK. I bought mine from http://wasdkeyboards.com and http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-sports-Gaming-equipments/ - all of these retailers have their own forums on here too.

Does it bother you the fact that Desko green shift is significantly smaller around the edges than the original beige shift from cherry board? It certainly bugged me quite fair bit when I fitted mine.
Title: Dressing Up Keyboards with Keycaps
Post by: litster on Wed, 25 January 2012, 22:55:13
Yeah, I noticed that as well.  But it doesn't bug me much, as I am just so happy to see them on my keyboard, happy to have them in my possession  :-).  And after I spent so much time designing my acrylic case and putting the phantom prototype together, I learned to realize that, as simple as a keyboard, things sometimes just don't match up quite exactly as I expect them to, especially when we mix and match parts together.  And I am kind of a perfectionist in a bad way.

Blanks are so elegant, with maybe a couple of different keycaps at max. I don't understand all the fuzz about double shots (easily gets shiny and sticky!), RGB, and dozen of different keycaps in the same setup.

My first Blanks will come from Round 4. Hopefully I'll be alive until then.

Yeah I know, but still, only two colors! I would understand in case for custom keys (TL, troll, SC2, etc), but for those more than just two colors would be appreciated! In case for the regular keys (qwer, asdf, ...) I definetly don't think that the higher contrast of DS justifies the ABS material (and lack of elegance!)

There is the retro appeal of DS with specific colors and fonts too, forgot about that... well, to each his own, every person is different :)

I've been away from GH for a while...  What "Round 4" group are you referring to?  I bought my key caps from WASDKeyboards.com, but I'd love to get blank PBTs that don't wear as fast.

That looks very nice. I bet your co workers love you with all the clicking!

I had a Filco Zero (fake white ALPS) before that was louder.  So, my coworkers were happy to hear this softer keyboard.  Ultimately, though, this keyboard is not much quieter than some people's rubber domes, since they clack when they bottom out. :)

Only doubleshots I care about anymore really are Cherry ones. I vastly prefer the lower profiles. Well just any of their keys in general really, the pom ones are pretty nice too. Something about pbt, I don't like the feeling of it.

I am more of an understated type of person too, but that doesn't mean you can't have color. You just need to do some pre planning so it dosen't look like a crayola factory exploded on your board.

Double shot replacements ROUND FOUR!
qtan (http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-sports-Gaming-equipments/category/pbt-key-caps/catId=3982960) have some PBT (not blank though), and VorTex group buy (http://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1125) has it also, but it will take a while (maybe not as long as R4 though).

If someone else knows other sources of blank PBT, please shout!

The vortex (KBC) are available in blank black or white. Only other source I know for blank pbt MX keys is SP, and a full set is much more expensive, and it's unlikely they will have all keys in stock in the same color in one go.

Screwed around with my poker tonight and didn't find anything I loved. Used some random Cherry caps I've had laying around. Found that it's super hard to match colors :\ It's that pesky bottom row that is the hardest. Phantom/dox will clear that up and let me use 1.5 CTRL/ALT caps though.

So, it looks like blank black keys are $110 in the Round 4 group or $33 in Vortex.  I'll do a search, but if I don't find it first, is there someone in the US that is helping with the Vortex order?

Those R4 prices are not final, but probably it will be very expensive.

I asked that before (VorTex in US) and sixty told me to talk to iMav and I did but I never got an answer.

I found it on eBay. ncbound i think. it was just a set of caps off an old board he said didn't work. i got him to ship me the board as well. sixty thought it was going to be a specific cherry board, but it turned out to be some random company we'd never heard of.

the full set of keys was identical to these except of course for cherry mx:

I am aware of that. I think it was more of an issue that I didn't have the modifiers. And I didn't like them next to filco profile caps. And didn't want to wait 6 months for a moogle.

That said I don't prefer the profile of these caps. But it's not a deal breaker. They look so nice. Plus the cherry set I got was pretty worn. I'd like to score a new set one day.

Why don't you prefer the Cherry profile? The lower profile helps to reduce the switch wobble. I can't say a reason why would anyone prefer the thin OEM/Filco key profile, unless they prefer to use them with O-rings.

erm..being lower profile doesn't reduce the wobble from the switch itself. However it does reduce the degree of wobbling movement at the top of the keycap.  Think swaying of a taller building vs a lower building under the same earthquake.

Hay guise,

I'm going to order keys with Colemak legends from WASD but help me chose some accents...

Here's the current look with the goofy blue home keys replaced by black. Plain and no-screwin-around but still a bit alien technology-like:

I only have a few caps of other colors but imagine the shift keys and both arrow keys are the same color.

First, grey. A bit of variation. Maybe a slightly industrial look (they're darker irl):

Black and orange? It's an R4 so it sticks out in that location but I'm just testing the color as you know... It would look better with more of it (shift and both arrows). Kinda sci-fi/computer game-ish.

Yellow is also an option. Maybe a bit too "danger"?

And finally, the poison frog:

Just the right amount of "danger".

Whaddya think?

Later this week I'll make pictures with black engraved letter/number keys, the other keys will be blanks for now. The blanks will be black or dark gray (I think I have enough grays left).

Black, red and grays should look pretty neat as well I think.

It's too bad the WASD dark grays aren't really dark, like the following pic (which I really dig):

If you think the space bar is too bright, I would suggest the light gray space bar from WASD. Works pretty good for me.

It's actually not that bright IRL. But I'll give the light grey one a try. Should have one somewhere.

Remedy problem of spending more on keycaps than on keyboard by buying more keyboards for them. The second one is given because you are a Geekhacker.

(Attachment) 36383

I'm super late to this, but I'm goddamn tempted to get a bunch of trollface enter keys printed.

if u don't mind speding a few extra bucks, get urself a WASD light gray space bar. Will improve the color balance "a bit" more. well, better than stock filco white for sure. not sure how well it fairs with the white in moogle kit.

MULTI TONE!!!!!!!

But yeah lightsout714 the simplistic layout with the red esc is very classic, I like it <3

Thanks guys. I'm not really into the crazy boards with colors all over the place. To each is own of course. Most I will do is like an RGB kit. I do love the red esc. though it really sets it off.

My keyboard right now. Has Round 1 Portal Keycaps, a Shamrock, and caps from the Incomplete Retro R3 set from Bongojingie's SP grab bag. I actually really love the look the incomplete set gives. Didn't use all of the keys of course, and I decided to leave out J because it didn't have the little guide bump on it. Still, beautiful keys. It'll be given that extra shimmer when I get my gold/zinc backspace (also why I omitted using the R3 set backspace).

How did you order the two colors from WASD? It seems costly to order a 37 key set and then order a bunch of single keys on top of that to complete the set.

If you think you will get be getting a Dolch keycap set in the future, you will want to go to this thread (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?28923-OPEN-R3-Moogle-Kits) and order yourself a Dolch moogle kit.  Moogle kit group buys don't happen all the time, and it has never happened for Dolch moogle kit.  Do it now or you will be begging to trade your rare click clack keycaps for one later.

Oh, and this Moogle kit group buy is super easy.  No need to have a Computer Science degree to join.  With this group buy you just need to fill out an online form.  Piece of cake!

This is all I got so far. Just recently started spending more money on keycaps than keyboards lol. My Noppoo Choc Mini is gonna be pretty naked until 7bit's doubleshot round 4 goes through. Haven't been able to find a compatible set for it really.

Anyway, I got some side printed PBT keycaps from Qtan on this Leopold. Also on there are WASKeyboards RGB modifiers (I wasn't really liking the blue color on some of the other RGB modifiers but I wish I could get a set of RGBY doubleshots with white legends =/) and some leftover novelty doubleshots from Ragnarock and nokcha. Now I'm waiting on some Wyse keycaps to come in the mail and my kit from 7bit's group buy. Just gotta find me some dolch keycaps and a way to get in on the doubleshot group buys from Sherryton and tsangan. Oh, and I gotta get me a set of dyesub PBT keycaps from either imsto or attarian. Can't decide. :P

you guys just made me miss the **** out of my blue case filco. I have no idea now why I sold it. :(

I got my purple dye subs from imsto today, and zerg dye sub esc. I'm a tiny bit bummed the zerg white isn't the same white as the rest. It also needs a little more flair, but I'm not sure what to add.

Is it just me or your PBT spacebar doesn't seems to be having the bent issue?

It is a shame we lost most of the attachments in the thread.  But here are a couple of new ones from me, continuing keyboard dress ups!

Edit: I should explain what they are.

KMAC winkey Titanium with Dolch double shots + Hashbaz's Dolch Moogle + Hashbaz's Red Cherry font Enter + the mystery keycap I just received.

This is a KMAC winkeless Silver with 2 sets of Cherry dye sub keycaps.  One set is just plain black on beige Cherry dye sub.  The other set RGB dye sub with some special print caps.

yeah i was anal and gave them all a good clean first lol i was so pissed at my phones cameras photos i went to the effort of making a dodgy little lightbox up and put my board in there for the shots with my real camera lol. came out alot better then i was expecting considering it was just a cheapo  canon ixus digital camera lol

its wierd they show up so pink but i do like the color.

these were the purple/pink caps i got:

this is my "gaming" board my main typing board is a ducky shine with white leds, im waiting to get that done up before posting pictures of that.

i have a heap of keys coming up so the filco will be changing so i'll keep you all updated, have some bio modifiers that will look nice!

love the "Unicorn Vomit Board" ...even though keyboards like that kinda look a mess... I think I prefer them to the standard colour scheme mix that most people go for

Hazeluff, that is the most excellent specimen of a keyboard that I've seen, in my entire life. My grail also incorporates the Nyancat numbers and rainbow keys, but with either a foxhound or jolly roger for the escape key.

I really like the style! I hope to have proper vomit board some day : P

Might has well post something. I'm sure you've all seen it in a similar state.

Slowly but surely my vomit board is coming along... too bad I sold a lot of my old caps that I had. Putting whatever spare/collection caps I have on my WASD :D

On occasion, I'll switch out one of the spares onto my Ducky keychain to carry around with me :) I like to dress that thing up more than keyboards, but I guess because it's much easier.

Its a Mini. But its not a Choc Mini...and not a MX Mini. Im pretty sure noone knows what mini it is.

I've been doing that since forever. This is why we need more Mod Row keys!

Look closely

I see it too! That's amazing. I know what mini it is. Nice screenprinting under the spacebar. (Also the filename sort of gves it away).
