Alps PBT blanks
« on: Sun, 22 January 2017, 19:50:15 »
Wouldn't it be great to have some Alps PBT blanks?

Currently, as far as I can tell, there are no:

• Alps PBT sets
• Alps blank sets (except Mathias)

I feel like these would appeal to a lot of people, and they shouldn't be too expensive to make.

Currently, if you want to make an Alps board with Cherry stabilizers you have the following choices:
• DCS Alpine Winter (ABS)
• DSA Lightcycle (ABS)
• Salvage something (99% will be ABS)

There should be enough of us that we could pool together for some PBT Alps, and I'm thinking that blanks might have the widest appeal. What do you think?

I'd be interested

I've thought about getting some molds made before, but the startup cost and ROI doesn't seem like it's worth it

There are alps pbt sets btw

Oh?

And I just remembered, I guess SP does offer DSA blanks, but I'm not sure if they make enough to produce a full set. Does anyone know?

Nope, can't build a full set (at least not for 60% as of last week)

I inquired with SP about whether they had any alps sets for sale. Their response:

"We are working on possibly getting some sublimated Alps sets up later in the year."

Looking hopeful!  :)

That would be amazing!  I guess I'll believe it when I see it 😀

Apparently Matias are working on a set for this year too.

Makes me a little sad that I recently ordered a set of the ABS caps from Matias. Well I'd still be happy if they actually came out with them and would probably order a set again.

I was under the impression Matias keycaps aren't compatible with keyboards that have cherry stabilizers? Whereas SP Alps and Alpine Winter have built-in cherry stabs.

You could be right - my KBP / Matias board has wire stabs. Although the TaiHao Alps set that I'm currently rocking is wire-stab too, rather than Cherry..

I think if Matias released a set, at least you could use the alphas.

The set of ABS Matias keycaps that I have is Cherry MX stab compatible, they don't come with the inserts but the inserts fit in the bottom of the keycap.

EDIT: Turns out that this is incorrect. Seems I remembered incorrectly.

Hmm, that's interesting.. I just grabbed this shot.. Matias Vintage spacebar > Matias Vintage shift key > TaiHao enter key:

I had to the little clip inserts from my Matias keys when I swapped them for the TaiHao

Interesting, turns out you are right. My memory is not what it used to be apparently as I just checked my bag again and do see the same mounts that you have there. Guess they aren't all Cherry stab compatible.
