Background

Hey Geekhack, ever had so many artisans, that you had no more room in your artisan cases? Well I’ve certainly been there. I tried solving that problem by making a case from LEGOŽ bricks. After a few moments the realization struck that one keycap could sit on one brick. It wasn’t stuck on it, or fixed like a brick is fixed on another brick. But it kept the artisan steady and centered. Now the fun part began! I’ve been experimenting with a lot of different designs and I’ve got to say, LEGOŽ and artisans seem perfect for each other. This vanity9 case is based on the idea that you don’t need a huge collection to have an awesome showcase on your desk. Enhance the experience with adding a logo from your favourite maker!
LEGOŽ offers so much opportunity, so hopefully the vanity9 case is just the beginning!

Features

Artisans do NOT firmly fit on a brick. They merely keep them centered in the case.

Why is it so expensive? This is in the realm of aluminium case prices.

Very good question. Problem with LEGO is that they only sell very few bricks as a separate brick. The bricks would need to be harvested from LEGO sets. There are vendors that do this as a business model. Prohlem being that the more you want, the more expensive it gets due to availability.
That is why Im using this IC to also see if people would be interested in a digital version where everyone can purchase their own bricks. That would be the cheapest option for everyone. Also the fastest.

Thanks for your reply!

The answer I gave to the person above should explain the reason

This seems to be over stating the problem. The 100 or so pieces in this would only cost ~$20 USD, and your digital version is WAY overpriced for LEGO. I don't see why anyone should put any money into this, the cheapest option is to build one yourself. Given the simplicity of the set, it shouldn't take anyone more than a lunchbreak to make. More fun that way too. GLWIC.

True, thats why a single set purchased by yourself would proof to be the most cost effective (price varies in location, amount and amount of vendors to complete the set). If you can find the bricks yourself and build it without any help, by all means, that is what LEGO is for!

Im here to present a way to use lego in a certain way. If its something you enjoy you can choose if you want to make this yourself completely which is obviously fine. Or its possible to have most of the work in figuring stuff out (like where do I get the bricks, how do I build it + add-ons) and start making it quicker.

Thanks for your comment!

What's the packaging look like? How detailed are the digital instructions? What's stopping someone from spending 30 minutes and releasing a free PDF of how to make this?

$10-$15 for instructions.

Pardon me?

If you really wanted to you could just like make a massive mold of all the pieces and just cast it with resin and it would probably come out cheaper.

It's pretty funny reading all the comments weighing up the value-for-money aspect of this. People, remember that we're talking about an artisan case here. If you've spent so much money on frivolous, expensive, unergonomic keycaps that they no longer fit on your keyboards and you need a friggin' case to hold them all, then 'good value' is not exactly your main priority. Surely the criterion they'll be judging this on is "Do I like it?", not "Could I spend a few hours scrounging up the parts myself to save a few bucks?". If the idea of getting a little LEGO case for their collectibles in the mail gives people a little joy, then why not?

Bricklink and Toypro literally exist for you to get individual Lego pieces so you don't need to 'scrounge' around for them.

Even Lego themselves allow you to buy pieces: https://www.lego.com/en-us/page/static/pick-a-brick

Heya! I'm not sure the IC stage is the stage where the packaging and instructions have to be showcased already.

The entire LEGO community works with purchasing and downloading PDF's for making MOCs (My Own Creations). And I'm sad to hear that you think this project only takes 30 minutes to make a PDF for. As the base kit is fairly simple, it did take quite some time to get it the way I wanted it to be including the add-ons, while still using bricks that are well accessible on the aftermarket.

That is most definately true. Though for a lot of people the fact that they are LEGO bricks means something.

That is the best source of getting bricks. Although you still need to know exactly which exact pieces, how much and in which color you need them. LEGO does not provide a large variety of bricks in all colors. It's not like you can buy every known brick available from them. Next to that they are more expensive per brick than using the aftermarket like bricklink.

I think people might enjoy the fact that they dont have to look for every individual piece, but just get the case without having to put too much effort into it yourself. If you want to make your own case, have the know how and got the time to spare, I'm not going to stop you! Thats the idea of LEGO, its for everyone!

Cute idea and presentation but I agree that the price is definitely high. I'm no lego expert but could the set be optimized to use more affordable bricks?

Obviously if someone wants this there's nothing wrong with that. A 'good value' is entirely subjective. Personally I can justify aesthetic artisans, but I can't justify this at the current price.
