[IC] GMK Big Ass Enter Pack - Prep Work in Progress- Poll SOON
« on: Mon, 04 September 2017, 10:32:46 »
Disregard the old form. New IC should up soon

Good day, everyone!
This is an IC for a set of 10 GMK Big Ass enter keys in community colourways.
I've set aside WoB and Black On Beige , as they are the OG colourways most people care about.
Michael from GMK has confirmed to me that the key molds exists, in Icon only or Icon + Text form.

The IC GForm(updated): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc9SDqLcFBCWD55QmhrdnQdh-9_jjQZ9cDehj1WMan0rsCXVg/viewform?usp=sf_link

Happy Clacking!!!! :)

Edit: I forgot to add that the stabilizers are in ISO configuration
I've emailed GMK about this. We are sorting out the stabilizer configuration
Edit2 : Added a pic of the stab configuration, courtesy of Ideus

09/10/2017 Sorry about not answering for a while, but it's a full two weeks and I haven't had the time. I've contacted GMK about the backspace key, the stabilizer configuration and MOQ.
18/10/2017 Still no answer from GMK.New poll is up
23/10/2017 Still no answer from GMK. :(
30/10/2017 No answer from ze Germans yet. Comment down below for which sets you would like to see rendered

Why would that icon go on the big ass enter? This is only a group buy for those.

It's not out of the question to add a 1U backspace key to match each keyset.

I wanted to leave that decision to the community, as it increases the price a little bit.

Personally I don’t have any keyboards with big ass Enter, but this is perfect for Yuri because I’m pretty sure actual Russian keyboards use big ass enter

Yuri

is MD exclusive
I've spoken with tomb3ry and he has given me permission to add Carbon, Yuri and Eclipse to the list. If he said no I would not have felt confortable running the IC.

I've spoken with tomb3ry...

That's good, but to do this you have to run it through MD? I asked about getting other add-ons for Yuri before, and that was my understanding of them having exclusivity on the colorway.

I think it might be the case if the big ass enter fits an ANSI stabs positions and the \| stem. It is a legitimate question, does anyone have a picture of the bottom of a GMK made BAE?

As long as it supports split backspace and ISO enter,it should be fine

Here is an underneath picture of a BAE key and it seems it fits ISO enter stem and stab positions plus the key to the left of it. The PCB shall be programmable, able to take ISO Enter and split backspace.

If they were willing to pay for it, Massdrop or anyone else could certainly get a contractual agreement with GMK that GMK will not mix the particular combinations of red on blue for anyone else, either for some months or years, or permanently.

Maybe the exclusivity already expired? If T0mb3ry said you're good to use this and didn't mention MD perhaps it's not any issue now?

Depending on the price, I'll most likely get 1 to match a few of my GMK sets. Not sure if I'd actually use it, but it looks super cool.

Could you let us know if a regular PCB supports the big ass enter key? Getting a special PCB would definitely make this less appealing.

Idk. Maybe he meant I had the Go ahead for the IC and then if it reached GB status I would need to speak with Yanbo

As long as it supports ISO enter and split backspace  and is programable, you should be fine.
You could also split a shift instead of the backspace.

Possibly. I don't see a big problem with this, it's just a detail that needs to be resolved and from MD's perspective I suspect they will just say go ahead and run it yourself, or they will ask that the GB goes through them.

Just in case someone wonder how the GMK BAE fits on a board. In a programmable PCB the BAE can be easily swapped with ISO Enter.

Very cool idea, although I'd be more interested in a regular-ass enter pack to go with the pile of Esc keys I've amassed from various packs to accent some of my more plain sets   ;D

I'm afraid it wont fit. On the iso enter the vertical stems are at the center of the 1.25U area, while in the bae enter they are centered at the 1.5U area.  :(
You would need new pcbs and plates.

edit: though gmk might have different stabilizer setups for this key, maybe worth asking. ANSI stabs and top key would be the most compatible.

I agree that the stems positions of the mold intended to be used should be checked.

For the record, both pictures are Cherry made boards and key caps, therefore, it is very likely that the mold available at GMK is the same. Personally, I would prefer this same design, because it fits over an standard ISO layout, which most contemporary PCBs fit, even Steel series boards have the same layout and in general, it seems that this layout is the most common, in the other hand, I do not see what PCBs or keyboards would take something like the bottom picture and it seems that it would have more mechanical interferences due to the large hollow stem.

Cherry key cap

Cherry board that takes Cherry key cap

Steel board that takes Cherry key cap

Other design, that I do not know what board can take

Not exactly "regular", but might have to jump on it if it goes to GB.

Except that this does not fit on a ISO layout board. See how the vertical stems are aligned on the 1.25U part in the ISO enter and on the 1.5U part in the BAE.

New PCBs and plates are needed for the keycap posted by ideus. We should ask if they have BAE with stem positions that would be compatible with either ansi or ISO layout switch & stabilizer locations.

I guess they have then updated their mold since the time they made the key ideus posted (I can make an overlay picture for you ideus if you still don't see the difference).
Might be wise to ask for a picture of the stem positions still though.  :thumb:

If it fits over ISO stems and stabs it will fit any custom that support ISO.

I just hope that the upcoming BAE keys do actually fit ISO layouts as the communication posted witnessed; otherwise,  as pomk pointed, the vertical three stems in the available pictures of the BAE design are slightly off the positions of contemporary ISO stems, the only way to reconcile them is if the BAE design has been adjusted to fit the ISO's.

That is precisely why this small board with a BAE is so enticing, is like a petite girl with voluptuous curves, just saying.

I just got an OG Cherry set with BAE and I can confirm that it does not fit the mechanics of the ISO Enter. As previously reported, the vertical stems do not match in between the BAE and the ISO Enter keys. It implies that BAE requires a different PCB layout. Personally, I am disapointed because it means that no current sixty PCB in the market fits a BAE.

I would have to speak with them to figure out if a new mold is needed. The guy in customer service claims that the stem position is similar to ISO, but I'm sure that the manufacturing team knows better.

Meanwhile, I will launch a poll to figure out which stem position is favorable (ANSI will likely come on top)

A compatible mold with, either, ANSI or ISO stem positions is required to make this viable. I see no-one interested in getting a new PCB or keyboard just to use a BAE.

It is _similar_, just shifted by some millimeter to the left.

Semantically, maybe. But, for practical use of the available BAE, it should fit exactly the stem's positions of either an ANSI or an ISO enter keys.

Exactly. If the BAE is slightly off stabilizer wise, It becomes impossible to use on standard boards. This limits it right away to the handful of people looking to use custom keycaps on old boards and given the MOQ, means this will be dead in the water

I would prefer running around jan/february 2018 and shipping later that summer. Right now I'm in uni and I don't have the time, but running this in my winter break would give me some peace of mind.

Just found this, very interested if for nothing else but the meme. I saw you've had issues contacting GMK, I was going to suggest emailing Michael but it looks like you have. If they don't reply to the support ticket email (zendeskxxxx@uniqey or something) find his direct email in one of his replies and send to that.

Usually GMK takes a while to respond, so I won't fault them for it. I'd would wager we are not very high in their priorities for now.  Plus I've asked a whole bunch of questions that only someone in manufacturing could answer.

Meanwhile I think we need a render. I'm inclined to get a render of 9009 in pink, but if you guys want to see some other keysets, leave them below

By the picture, it seems that the XD has standard switch positions for ANSI and ISO. There is no BAE available that fits either. You would need a redesigned ISO compatible BAE. The one this thread is about.

Dunno. But, the existing molds could be retooled to relocate the stems. Yet, only GMK could quote it.

If the BAE stems are fitted over ISO, this may be used on any Euro keyboard. The key beside the ISO Enter should be sacrificed, of course.

It's basically an enter format popular on alps keyboards and some OEM's. Cherry made a couple of boards using it but it was not super popular and ended up ditching it for a standard backspace and ISO/ANSI enters.

The Cherry/GMK mold exists but its not compatible with modern ISO boards(the stabilizer inserts are centered on the 1.5 upper half and are on a top bottom arrangement-as opposed to a horizontal arrangement in ANSI or a 1.25 centered top bottom ISO cap ).

Running this would need new molds to make it compatible with modern keyboards. At the time, I didn't think there was enough demand to invest in new molds(which are quite pricy and would require a large MOQ to be feasible).

I think it might be time to restart the IC. I'll need to dust up my rendering skills.

Also does anyone know a good survey site btw? Google forms kinda sucked last time I used it.

i would buy this in a heart beat if it ends up running. if new molds have to be made i think it would help it be ansi + the top key compared to iso + the left key. fixed layout boards arnt great always.

tai-hao BAE keys for SteelSeries 6gV2 (leftovers selling on aliexpress - https://aliexpress.com/item/32824755255.html) would sit perfectly on a ANSI keyboard, they use ANSI Enter stem and the top "stem" corresponds to backslash switch position.

I call it the top "stem" because it's not a stem but long tube, that on 6gV2 went to water well like hole installed instead of ANSI backslash switch.

So if the GMK BAE mold will be finally created, I suppose it should sit on a ANSI Enter and backslash switches...

Tai-Hao's an ANSI BAE. This thread is for an ISO BAE. Different stem positions for each one. Tai-Hao's may have broader appeal though.

I'm more inclined to go for the ANSI BAE route, it's a wider market and for a niche group buy it I'll help lower the cost for everyone.

Early Commodore boards and many pre PC standard boards used BAE layouts.  It would be very cool to have the option to fit this to any existing ISO layout board.  I am very interested if this can actually be produced.

I agree that ANSI BAE would get MoQ easily. I may join either one in basic colors like Beige, Black and Dolch, some classic highlight ones would be great as well.

Can the "Reverse L" or "slim ass" Enter get into this set somehow?

You mean this one? I'm sure the mold is available.

Hi guys. Sorry for constantly necroing this thread. Life keeps on getting in the way. Here are some of my renders so far:

Much like the actual Violet Tendencies, it's incredibly hard to see the mods

There was a time when I was very interested in this. Now my layouts have moved to ANSI. Still, I use one with ISO Enter. The ANSI has the advantage that it can have a short backspace on top of it, instead of the big ass.
This is my upcoming build. My own interpretation of an International Danish layout.

VT is just a proposal. I happened to have that board and caps laying around in my Solidworks files from when I started the project

jihadu, thanks for renders!

As for me, I don't really care for colors.
For start I'd love to get several solid-color BAEs (black is the first choice with white/no caption) of different profiles (OEM+cherry).

I thought this project already went to GB/Necro!

I'm really happy to see this project still alive.

I've currently designing a 60% keyboard that uses the BAE.

If this is going to become a reality, I will definitely go with the ISO stab enter, because up until now, I've been designing around the Tai Hao BAE, which they reference as 6Gv2 Enter.

The weird stabiliser needed for it has been really difficult to source, so all the more for this project to succeed.

So what's the next step here?  It seems like you were in touch with GMK but the entire first post is stricken through, so can we just get a dimensioned drawing of their keycap and order a sample in any color and figure out if it will work ???

Here's a board I built with a set of DCS keycaps that had a BAE, if it's possible I think it would be alot easier to reach MOQ if the keycap could be tooled to use ANSI Enter stabilizer positions, with a stem in the spot of the Pipe key for a dummy switch at the top half of the keycap - that would allow alot of non-ISO boards to use the BAE, and also allow for easy switching back to ANSI enter. My opinion is that if you're already using an ISO enter, there's no real need to change to a BAE, but if you're using ANSI enter, a BAE would be a fun way to get ISO-esque aesthetic without having to rebuild your keyboard (or buy a new PCB/Plate in the case of boards that don't support ISO)

This is a very interesting idea. Switching between ANSI-Enter and BAE would be a terrific way to have fun and to experience something different, from time to time.

I need this in my life.
It would be fantastic if there was an easy way to convert ISO or ANSI boards into BAE boards without the need for special stabilizers.

Hey, I just want to add my two cents. I was looking to support the ISO BAE in my build. I included some pictures, especially the one from the Keyboard Layout Editor shows perfectly how the position is off by a few mm. It was already said, but a more clear visualisation:
