what's the best way to acquire group buy sets that are listed as sold out? is there just aftermarket or do vendors have some to sell?

Sometimes after manufacture, the GB runners will have extras, though there will most likely be a premium added.  You can also check /r/mechmarket on Reddit after the set is delivered as some will part with them for varying reasons.
