With a bad knee, I don't walk that much. mostly short distances without a crutch. Friday, my knee was worse than usual so I sought medical attention, and had to walk more — so I walked with the crutch, despite having mild  "mouse arm" symptoms in that shoulder from overstretching to reach the keyboard.
I woke up Saturday morning with sharp pain in the shoulder. That arm is largely unusable and I am under almost constant pain, and have difficulty sleeping as it starts hurting as soon as I just wiggle a little in bed.
Sought medical attention for that today: No quick fix. Just pain medication and some simple exercises. Should heal in three months unless I do something stupid again. So, now I am crippled in two places with almost constant pain. Great.
Edit: The pain has ceded, but the first week was hell. I just need to exercise that arm a bit. I suppose the "three months" bit is when I get back full strength.

Three bands I want to are playing a gig together.  Of course it's 150 miles away so I'm looking at £35 for the ticket, £125 for a cheap hotel and £95 for a train, plus some underground tickets - that's £250+ for an evening's entertainment that's only valued at £35

£125 is for two nights, right? Or does Britain just have bad hotels?

By all means, do plan some more activities at the location than just the concert, so that you would have multiple things to look forward to. For instance, find an interesting restaurant nearby. Any interesting shops that cater to one of your interests? Look up som silly minor "sights" in advance, or just plan to explore an area and see what you'd find when you get there.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

One night, capital city centre(ish) so stupidly expensive.  Spending more time and money to do more would be great if I had more money but if I did I wouldn't be complaining!

£125 for a cheap hotel

I don't get the hashtag but "cheap" here is relative.  Arriving at a hotel in the early hours after a gig I don't need a view, swimming pool or gym, a shower and a clean bed is enough so of course I don't want to pay much:

Tp4 shudders,   the map might as well be labeled, places you pay to get potentially murdared... where you sleep off attending an event that can end in a stampede and/or asphyxiation by the crushing weight of a pile of human bodies, who may also be carrying deadly viruses.. :D

The danger point is greater than 5 hughmahns per square meter, if you notice yourself in density higher than that, attempt to shuffle sideways and out of the crowd.

Ugh I had that over a period of like 3-4 years. It stopped a while back, but that **** can get nasty.
I hope you get through alright.

What's bothering me is that work is slowing down considerably. If this keeps up I'm going to have to start looking for other work. I can't just show up for work and do ****all.

Getting off daylight savings time tomorrow night will probably perk you up for a while.

Originally it was designed to occupy half of the year, but these days it is starting too early and hanging around too long.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

That depends if you are a morning-person or an evening-person, I think.
Dusk comes an hour earlier now.

Well, you're a Merkin. You always pronounce things wrong. Omit the 'e' in "squirrel". Insert 'x'es into "et cetera" and "espresso". Pronounce Cacao like "coco" in "coconut".
And don't get me started on the silent 's' in "nuclear" ....

finally found my dream typewriter on sale near me (ibm selectric 2/3 in blue) i go buy it knowing it needed at least a full service not having run for 25 years, now that i have it home i see that the latches to open it are broken and so i am stuck with a very heavy paperweight as all the grease is dried and the machine is fully seized up (as expected).
i never expected that someone could break such a part, so did not think to check...

Maintaining a home bar with a good variety of available cocktails is a pretty expensive hobby.
I should start putting a tip jar on my kitchen counter for when I'm entertaining. I suspect no one wants to be my friend at all, just here for the free drinks. Why would anyone wanna be my friend?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary online:

entertain verb (INVITE)
[ I or T ]
to invite someone to your home and give food and drink to them:
"We entertain a lot of people, mainly business associates of my wife's."
"Now that I live on my own, I don't entertain much."
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”

Well it used to be whenever I hung out with friends and we would party, we'd always split the cost of the weed or booze (usually both) and have a good time. I guess into your 30's onward one person is expected to foot the entire bill? I guess people assume by then you are financially and emotionally stable enough to foot the bill... well joke's on them, cause I'm neither!

That is a false equivalency. And, I would argue that that social democratization made for a more enjoyable gathering.

PS - It sounds like you have chosen to serve top-shelf liquor to your guests. Back in the day, I suspect that your group sought the best dope and the cheapest booze, and many people brought their own and shared it.

Why won't paramount remaster Voyager and DS9..

If they say it cost $10 million to remaster TNG,  at most it'd cost what 20m to do either Voy or DS9 ?

They're quoting 10-20m per episode of Discovery/ Picard,  yet they won't spend $20m to remaster 100s of episodes worth of Voy+DS9

I found out the other day that the pain in my right knee is caused by (non-Hodgkins) lymphoma.
This also explains my blood status and fevers.
I'm doing a few tests this week before the first meet-up with a specialist later.

I'm surprised at myself, at how calm I am about it. Maybe that's because I've known for quite some time that there have been something wrong with me, and I'm relieved that there is finally a diagnosis and some treatment on the horizon. I have had to argue and coax doctors FOR MONTHS to get more tests done and find out what the .. has been the cause of my symptoms.

Oh ****! My sympathies man, that is rough. Please keep us updated on your treatment.
And that last bit about the docs dragging their feet makes me so angry. Hopefully this motivates them to give you extra attention after seeing their negligence.
Good luck man.

I think if the invite is "come over, I want to show off my new cocktail making skills" people are going to be more hesitant to pay you for the drinks (meaning, that won't be the instinctual thing to do). Think of if you had someone over for a homemade dinner and they tried to pay you for your time and materials - kind of a weird thing to do as a guest.

Contrast that with the parties of your early 20s. "Hey, party tonight, BYOB or split the tab." It's a different invite/prompt. You could totally do the same today, just need to be clear about it. It just works less well if you want to do the bartender, 'share your cocktail makin' skills' thing.

Because the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has been under monumental and relentless assault from the Republicans since it was first proposed by Senator Warren. It needs to be large agency with strong enforcement powers, but it has been crippled time after time.

Pronounced piranha wrong whole life,   it's NAH, and not HA.   been saying piran  HA the whole time.
Still doing it wrong. "Piranha" is pronounced PIRANYA.

wha... are you sure ?

Well, you're a Merkin. You always pronounce things wrong. Omit the 'e' in "squirrel". Insert 'x'es into "et cetera" and "espresso". Pronounce Cacao like "coco" in "coconut".
And don't get me started on the silent 's' in "nuclear" ....

:-þ

as a true merkin, i gotta correct you here.
first of all you're totally right about the squirrel thing, but the rest is very wrong in my experience. maybe some people put x in espresso and et cetera but i rarely hear it. the cacao thing is totally wrong and i've never heard anyone say it like that, and i don't even know what you mean by "silent s in nuclear"
someone needs to make an aussie keyboard community called QMƎɹ┴⅄. get it? haha :D

Yeah squirr'l and expresso (this one bothers me though) are totally on point.

I think I remember reading or hearing that it's cacao vs cocoa depending on which stage of the process it's from? Cacao nibs vs cocoa powder, for example.

Really the worst thing people do related to et cetera is say it multiple times, which is just nonsensical ("and everything else and everything else"). If we're getting super picky about pronunciation, it would actually be a hard 'k' sound, 'et ketera', which no one would say because it's ridiculously pretentious.

And this nuclear silent 's' point I also don't get - the actual murican offense with nuclear is pronouncing it 'nucular'.

Having lived my life in the Southeast (except for a few months in Rochester NY) I am surprised at these comments.

Yes, in the US the extra "x" is almost always there.

Yes, most people ignore everything but the co-co part.

? Where is the "s" located in nuclear ? I do agree that I have never known of such a thing.

When did "merkin"  https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/merkin  become "Murican"  https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Murican ?

Omit the 'e' in "squirrel".
Who the **** pronounces the 'e' in 'squirrel'? Is that Swedish English, that dialect in which the word 'nuclear' contains an 's'?

Well, it is not supposed to rhyme with "swirl".

(The "silent 'S'" was a reference to the Simpsons ... :-þ )

I have always pronounced it as one of those "more than 1 syllable but less than 2 syllables" scenarios.
