    December 9, 2019 Updates
    Updates
    • Cleaned up Base modifier kits and split into child kits
    • Received preliminary quotes for new kits
    • Updated colours.
Colours will be matched to actual typewriter keys that will be sent to Signature Plastics. This will mostly affect the modifiers which are now a bit of a cooler green. New renders reflect the updated modifier colour as close as possible. Final keycaps will use the typewriter alpha and modifier colours along with the previously provided Pantone legend colour.

    New
    • Alphas Kit
    • TKL/HHKB/Tsangan/Winkeyless Kit
    • ISO Kit
    • Nupad/96/1800 Kit
    • Ortho/40s Kit
    • Spacekeys Kit

    Notes
I am not currently planning a monotone modifier kit but I am still developing a novelties kit and/or a single metal artisan. These are early stages so plans are subject to change.

I’d love to get any additional feedback on the new kits. And even though I’ve put tremendous thought into these kits, now is the time to let me know if anything is glaringly wrong or missing!

A nice, calm green set with a historic background

Usually not a fan of green, but this would be something up my alley :thumb:

My suggestion: a 2nd mod kit in 5535C shade as well, its an amazing shade, will pair well with the current alphas n other sets.

Physical layout compatibility in the kit seems to be good. I have a couple observations:

    1) Given that you're providing a mod-colored R1 `~ key, a mod-colored 1.5U R2 \| should be added as well.

    2) The R3 #~ key should be \| instead (so as to have proper English (USA) over ANSISO or ISO, instead of the dreaded "Atlantis ISO").

The above point 2) is, of course, if you want to keep the same number of keycaps in the kit. Another option is to complete the support for English (UK) over ISO, which would require adding R3 '@, R1 , R1 2" and R1 .

I kind of agree. The olive looks okay, but the original colors seems to be something a bit less brown. It would be nice to see what it would look like with a bit more vintage green.

Perhaps a cooler olive would be more palatable to a wider audience. Since we're on the subject, I wouldn't mind cooler colors overall.

    How about a non-stepped R3 Control?

If I split up the kits I'll consider its inclusion.

i would love to see the same kit with everything deep green, the deep green and seafoam very looks nice but i do not like the olive.

I kind of agree. The olive looks okay, but the original colors seems to be something a bit less brown. It would be nice to see what it would look like with a bit more vintage green.

There have been a few requests for a monochromatic option so I'll consider adding that if I switch to smaller kits. I need to consider how large of a GB I think this can sustain while keeping in mind the pricing and logistics. I'm all for more options though as I personally would like spacekeys too.

    Plane as enter novelty?

I'm going to start working on some novelties as there have been a number of requests for them!

Physical layout compatibility in the kit seems to be good. I have a couple observations:

    1) Given that you're providing a mod-colored R1 `~ key, a mod-colored 1.5U R2 \| should be added as well.

Thank you for clarifying this. I'll look into cleaning up ISO and perhaps breaking it into a separate kit.

You know what? These are EXACTLY green alphas that should have been used in SA Nuclear....
Original ones were to bright. This is dark green that was used on Nuclear Data ND 6600 boards.

I have SA Nuclear Data and I knew I wanted something darker. I saw this typewriter and fell in love with it and decided I'd try to bring it to life while bringing to life a darker more "mature" green.

Don't you mean GMK Skywriter? /s

Hey there Mr. SA Sunday Morning, us SA runners need to stick together!  ;D

Thanks everyone for your interest and feedback so far! The reception of this set has been wonderful and I look forward to moving it towards GB. I've got a few things to think about at this point and will be working on some kit options, novelties, and reaching out to SP and other vendors.

Updated the base kit, see changes in the update notes. Working on child kits and splitting the base kit and will get quotes for both the larger base kit and separate kits to see which direction to take this in.

I didn't catch this earlier, sorry, but can the spacebars kit get a 2.25 in addition to the 2.75? 40s layouts, VE.A and clone, SP-111 and other split boards use both of those in concert.

Yes, actually that was an oversight. I had incorrectly labelled one of the keys. There’s no blank 1.5u but there is definitely a 2.25u spacekey.

Is the 40s and Ortho kit intended to be in addition to the TKL kit to cover a 40s board? If not, you're missing quite a few keys and have a few repeats. The row profiling on your TKL kit is also the wrong profiling for the base keys. It should be 112343, unless that was your intention.

Yes, that is my current intention. As a 40s user myself I find I almost always end up buying the TKL kit anyways as I generally find the 40s kit doesn’t support enough of what I need and I may want to put the keycaps on a larger board.

Now, obviously not everyone buys keycaps the way I do, but by supporting ortho with just the 40s and spacekeys kit, I’ve at least covered that. Hopefully by setting a slightly higher MOQ I can offset the price of 40s + TKL for 40-60% staggered boards. At least that’s the theory.

    Any thoughts on that?

I'm not going to comment on how you want to kit up, just can help with some, perhaps, unnecessary keys.

For instance, you have [R3] Left, Down, Right in the TKL kit though those are already present in the TKL kit. The Up key should be okay as that normally comes in R4 profiling and needs to be there for ortho users that use arrows along the bottom row.

You could probably but the 40s 1u super key as there are already 2 present in the TKL kit.

If you change your mind, and wish to try and run 40s as a standalone kit, please refer to my Sunday Morning 40s kit.

Please also refer to my previous comment above about row profiling.

The Up key should be okay as that normally comes in R4 profiling.

You could probably but the 40s 1u super key as there are already 2 present in the TKL kit.

If you change your mind, and wish to try and run 40s as a standalone kit, please refer to my Sunday Morning 40s kit.

Please also refer to my previous comment above about row profiling.

Thanks for the feedback! This is certainly the area I feel least certain about so I’m definitely open to different ideas. I’ve absolutely been spying your setup with SA Sunday Morning and think you did an excellent job with those kits!

Not a problem, glad to help.

Another thing I noticed, your 40s kit supports minivans but it needs a R3 1.75 "Lock" key for the bottom row to support the non-arrow layout for the minivan.

After consulting the 40s discord I’ve decided, at least for now, that the R3 caps lock or control keys in the TKL kit would suffice. Which made me realize that I’ve mislabeled my rows in that kit!

Hey everyone, please have your tickets ready and prepare to board flight SA Skyriter. We will be taking off in August 2020 with the support of these vendors who will be hosting:

    • North America - NovelKeys
    • Europe - Mykeyboard.eu
    • Oceania - Daily Clack
    • Asia - zFrontier

In other news the reception to the new kits has been great, and while there may be a few tweaks to be made, I’m pretty happy with them. If you have any concerns about the kits please let me know!

Lastly, a novelty kit is in development and I’m really excited to share it with you. Right now I’m experimenting with a few different concepts. Given the amount of time until the GB I want to take it slow and get things right but I’ll post the novelties as soon as they’re ready!

If you'd like to show your support or offer feedback please consider filling out the Interest Check form.

Thank you all for your ongoing support. I’m looking forward to seeing you in August and I’ll keep you up to speed as we approach takeoff.

A novelty ISO enter might really boost the ISO kit's sales.  Look at GMK Ursa for example: 125 ISO/613 Base.

I was trying to think about what would best use the space of an Iso enter. the visage of the skyriter, going vertically? you're clever, you'll think of something. It'll help iso hit MOQ.

Just added a render of SA Skyriter in ISO formation on J-02 from Jae.

If you haven't heard of the J-02 you can find more info over on this thread https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=104477.0. The GB for J-02 will be starting January 8th!

Once again thanks to Voodoo6k for the lovely renders.

I recommend moving the R1 Del key from the numpad kit to the mods kit since that key is used in 60%, 65% and 75% layouts as well.

You might also want to consider adding a R1 1u = key to the numpad kit, and removing the 1.75u spacebar from the spacebars kit (it's only used on three boards afaik: Vortex Core, Daisy, JD40, and the latter requires two of them).

Thank you for this feedback. I’ll certainly take it into consideration!

Can I ask what layout the 1u “=“ key would be for? I don’t use enough fullsize boards to always recognize the common layouts there.

You're welcome, thanks for taking it into consideration. It's an optional key that's sometimes included in numpad kits, for two reasons: 1. it offers support for standandalone numpads; 2. some people like having a more easily accessible = key when doing a lot of numeric entry. On 1800/CP, full-size and other boards with a numpad you can put it on the Num Lock row if you split the plus. Less importantly, but still worth mentioning, Macs natively support a numpad = key.

Agreed, lots of choices. In the end, unless I can find the ‘perfect green’ I think I would go with a complementary color to highlight the alphas.

I very excited about this set. I have a Smith-Corona Clipper from the same era in the same colour scheme. These are the keycaps I have been looking for. I'm embarking on my first build - the Sofle keyboard. It's almost exactly like the Lily58 Pro, a split ortholinear board. Like a lot of other boards similar to this one, it is all 1U caps. This one also has 2 1.5u thumb keys. I know you can't make a set for every board layout, but 2 R4 1u shift keys in the orthokit would be amazing. If there was also a small selection of blank keys in various sizes for each row, that would allow most split board users access to this set.

I love the idea of a novelties kit and a single metal artisan key. The metal artisan key in chrome would be perfect - it would represent the carriage return!! As far as novelties go - there are a number of keys and details on the typewriter that could work as inspiration.

Here's a few photos of my typewriter's "novelty" details and an approximation of my future build.

    Great work on this set!

I would go in for one of those kits too.

But there aren't any Win keys? I went with the more agnostic legends of Control System and Alt. I'm a Mac user too and find "System" to be a suitable replacement for Command.

Thanks for sharing your typewriter and your feedback on keycap compatibility. Nothing is set in stone quite yet and all kits are open to consideration.

Novelties are still a work in progress and I have a couple deskmat ideas that I'll see if I can make happen too!

A couple of questions about layout:

Not sure if I just can't spot the 1u 'delete' mod in TKL/WKL R2. There's a 1.5 'backspace' for R2 but maybe it should be R3? There's also an extra R2 'page up' which appears to be a duplicate key (see nav cluster). I'm hoping to run 60% with R1 pipe and delete keys, R2 backspace (hhkb/tsangan).*

Also, I'm not a customer for Numpad but I'm wondering why the set includes two 'minus' sign keys but no R1 'equals' sign key? (This seems to get overlooked quite often but for spreadsheet jockeys it's nice to have an 'equals' key above the numbers.

    * This might be a little confusing because the Alphas start at R1 which is really R2 based on Mods kit.

I thought I had fixed the row labels but I see I did not. I will get to that shortly. It should be 112343. As for your suggestions I’ll take them into consideration and thank you for your feedback!

Hey everyone, major updates. Check out the updates post to see all changes. By popular demand I've added a Monochrome TKL/Specialty kit!
We've also got DeskHero onboard as a Canadian vendor, Minila, XD60/64 support.

I'm working on Novelties and aiming to provide enough to cover 65% right column and the usual bottom row and enter key.

Deskmats are also in the works and should have some images for those soon.

Currently it does not. I’ll consider it’s inclusion but it’s hard to justify if it’s only the one board needing it. I’ll do some digging to see if it would add support for additional boards.

Digging the colours and looking forward for the deskmats (hopefully with some nice planes like in your logo :D) If there was a nordeuk (emphasis on DE  ;D) set, I'd be interested.

Any 66-key layout board, e.g. Volcano660, Clueboard etc. Also, the second 2.25u Shift can be useful for split spacebar and Alice-like layouts (it can work as an Fn, space etc.). For both of these reasons, 2.75u, 2×2.25u, 1.75u, 1.25u, and sometimes 2u, Shifts are commonly included in base kits.

Edit: I took a look at the kits again, and I don't see R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn anymore. I'm not sure if these were removed at some point, or if they had never been there in the first place and I just missed it. Would you consider adding these keys to the mods kit, Cijanzen?

Thanks for these additional boards to look at for compatibility. Your input has been really helpful throughout this IC.

I did intentionally remove the R3 Pg Up and R4 Pg Dn so I could add the 2u Shift. I’m trying to find the right balance of compatibility and price and it’s definitely a hard balance to strike!

Ultimately I want to please everyone but I know that wouldn’t be possible. Now, I know you’re one voice but would you say you’re representative of many 65% users? Additionally, if things go according to plan I should have novelties to cover every row that could be used in the right column. Would that be a sufficient alternative to correct legends for somebody like yourself?

I think I'm definitely among the most vocal advocates of R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn (together with oldcat), but I'm happy to say that I've been seeing more and more people request these keys in ICs over the past 6–12 months. A lot of people, in fact, if you take a look at other IC threads. I think one of the reasons why these keys have seen a resurgence in popularity (they used to be popular back in the day, around the time when Whitefox R1 and GMK Muted first ran) is Drop's ALT keyboard. This is arguably the most common 65% board out in the wild currently, and it features these keys in its default layout and keycaps. Many of new users have consequently adopted them as part of their preferred 65% layout.

If I had to rank the keys we've been discussing in terms of objective popularity / presence in the community, I would say: R3 PgUp R4 PgDn > 2u Shift ≈ second 2.25u Shift. This isn't taking into account the ability to use the Shifts as space keys, for reasons that Voodoo outlined above. That depends on who your target audience is, though; more on that below.

    Happy to be of help!

You are correct about the wrong profile, I had forgotten about that. I think the fairly aggressive SA R4 profile is going to reduce the number of people who opt to use the Shifts as space keys, even if flipped. So the space keys argument isn't as applicable here as I initially posited.

The question of which is rarer, 2u or second 2.25u, depends on who the majority of your buyers are going to be. 2u Shift layouts are not that common in the Western community, and I think 66-key users may well outnumber 2u Shift users here — but they are very popular with Eastern audiences, mainly because of the GK64 and its clones. This is why we've been seeing recent sets that ran on Drop, e.g. MiTo's Belafonte and Hennessey, include 2u Shift (and even 1u Shift and R4 1u Delete), since there are a lot of Asian buyers there. In this particular case, I believe the decision to include those keys over certain other options was based on audience research conducted by MiTo.

For all of the reasons we've mentioned, I would consider forgoing the second 2.25u Shift, but I would definitely keep R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn and, maybe, 2u Shift as well. Then again, replacing 2u Shift with 2.25u might be a good way to go, too.

Hey everyone! I recognize by adding a monochrome kit, this has created a potential buyer split that may make hitting MOQ more challenging.

With that said, I am running a poll to gather feedback on how this GB should proceed.

There are a few ways this can go:
    1. Keep both kits as they are and set a lower MOQ at a slightly higher price
    2. Drop the olive kit and instead create a smaller olive accent kit. All other modifier kits become dark green.
    3. Drop the monochrome kit

Please take a moment to vote here: https://strawpoll.com/sw22q58d4

I’d love to understand what the community is looking for with this group buy and I appreciate all of the feedback that has been provided. I’m looking forward to better understanding what you want from SA Skyriter.

Thanks konstantin for your thorough feedback. I've decided, why not both? Motte hopefully the latest additions will help you!

Surefoot, I agree. After running this poll (thank you everyone who filled it out) to help determine the fate of the modifiers it has become quite clear that the majority would prefer the Olive modifier kit. I know some of you will be disappointed and I'm sorry that I teased the possibility only to reverse on it. After seeing some renders from Voodoo6k I could more clearly visualize what this would look like and it felt like it was straying too far from what I had initial envisioned. That thought, along with poll results clearing indicating the Monochrome modifiers should be dropped lead me to decide to stick with the initial Olive modifiers.

With just one colour to work with we'll be able to set a higher MOQ and achieve some lower pricing. Because there is only one colour to support I've now added a 2nd 2.25u Shift key to support 66% key layouts like FC660M, Volcano, etc. Additionally I've added back the R3 Pg Up and R4 Pg Dn keys to better support various 65% right columns.

There may be a couple more changes like adding independent support for the Numpad kit for anyone who wants to use it standalone. I'm also working out the logistics of the Ortho/40s kit and contemplating whether to make it more standalone so you likely wouldn't need to buy the TKL/Specialty kit.

As always, let me know if you have any feedback!

Boo.  I'll still buy the set, but the olive modifiers are just too much olive.  I would have liked to do monochrome with olive accents on return and escape.  Oh well, like I said, I'll still support the group buy.   :thumb:

The kit update looks good, although I think you may have swapped the size annotations on the 1.75u and 2.25u Shift keys by accident :D

Is it possible to add light-green 6.25u and/or 7u Space into the Spacekeys kit?

I’m considering it. There have been a few requests so I’m going to put something together and get a quote. I don’t want to promise anything but there’s definitely a possibility!

I tried to explain in a previous post but after polling the community more people would prefer a higher MOQ, lower pricing, and better coverage in the olive modifiers. That wouldn’t be possible if there were two modifier kits to choose from.

Additionally, after seeing a few renders from Voodoo6k I felt like it was deviating too much from my initial design goals.

Sorry to tease you with the idea and then retract it. It was a hard choice but I think ultimately the best choice for the overall GB.

I'm thinking about adding a NorDe kit alongside the ISO kit as there have been a fair amount of requests for it (no guarantees). Here's what I've got so far which basically copies Oblivion and Dasher Dancer NorDe kits.

For those who would be interested in this kit, am I missing anything or have any of the characters wrong?

aww s'all good. monochrome keysets are harder to find it seems and i love the look of them, was very briefly excited to get both dark and light green modifiers. but i'll be happy with what you've put together, so pretty!

A couple things seem to be off / missing. Here's a list, hope you'll find it helpful:
    • R1 2" can be removed since it's already present in the ISO kit as part of the UK keys.
    • The R1 ^° legend looks a bit off, namely the top character. It appears to be a masculine ordinal indicator (º) used in Spanish, whereas the German keyboard layout has a degree sign (°) in that spot.
    • R2 Z alpha is missing for Deutsch.
    • You may want to add a R4 numpad , key, since that's what these languages use, but I wouldn't say it's a must.

Thanks as always, you’re so on top of these things! Yes, I realized I used the wrong character instead of the degree symbol and I’ll update that. I’ll add the “Z” R2 alpha and consider the Numpad key

My pleasure! I edited in a note after you had replied, so I'll repost it just in case, so you don't miss it:

Adding the following two keys would also let you support Estonian (since it's already covered for the most part), but I'm not sure if that's something you want: R2 Õ, R1 ˇ~.
The latter is less important since it looks almost identical to the regular `~ key, and it occupies the same spot, so you could get away with just adding the Õ (again, if supporting Estonian is something you want).

konstantin said most points I saw. On german R2 Q and E have second legends: The first one a @ and the latter a €. But I don't think they're a must.
As a german typer, there's a general thing I don't like about separate NorDe and UK kits: I'd have to buy both. The ideal way probably would be to add all the keys a potential buyer would need. But again, this way has a higher risk of not being economical. Having one NorDeUK kit with a bit higher price would be the best compromise IMHO.

It would probably help with reaching the MOQ too... I'm using the ISO UK only but i dont mind the bigger kit if that means it can be made at all.

I’ll consider a combined kit. I don’t want ISO users to feel like they have to buy all these extra keys if they are combined and yet it may work out better from an MOQ standpoint if they were. I’ll get quotes for both options and decide from there!

Take a look at these stats (source):

Imo, there are enough German and Nordic users on one hand, and UK and US ISO users on the other hand, to warrant keeping the kits separate. I would either leave them as is, or I would add 2", ISO Enter, 1.25u Shift to the NorDe kit so NorDe users don't have to buy the UK/US keys. But at that point it's just a couple of extra keys, so keeping the kits as is might be the way to go since it also helps the ISO kit hit MOQ.

    Thanks, and great question!

The breeze blocks, an iconic mid-century motif, I visualized being used as a fun way to fill up a macro column or 65% right-hand column.

The typewriter is a fairly literal trace of the side profile of the Skyriter typewriter that this keycap design is based on.

The ISO return jet is designed after the F-100 Super Sabre, one of the first USAF Jet capable of supersonic speed. This was inspired by the fact that the typewriter was meant to be very portable and advertised as being brought onto a plane as part of your carry-on luggage. It's also a callback to the jet graphics used on the original typewriter owners manual.

The bird and 1.5u "dots" novelties are inspired by 1950s Charles and Ray Eames designs while the 1u starburst novelties are inspired by George Nelson wall clocks.

Lastly, the 1.25u diamonds were just a very common design motif in the 50s that I just loved and wanted to pull into this design.

We’re very close to launch now. Kits are locked in and pricing and takeoff date will be announced soon!

Holy **** a Norde kit! Count me in if it comes to fruition!
With regards to the keys included it seems you got most of them. I referenced SA Vilebloom Norde kit which has been a pretty successful kit.

Thanks for the feedback. I have done some small test prints just to get a feel for the scale of things and I liked it. With that said, I’ll do some further testing just to confirm.

Just curious, is there a plan to make inverse variation of the greens? Something like SA Dasher & SA Dancer.

Interesting idea, but no plans for that. Kits are locked in at this point as we’re heading for group buy in early August.

Might not be able to resist ordering regardless, but I'd love to hear opinions on how this set would pair with the Rama Zenith board in Moss.

And will these be ABS or PBT?

Can’t say for sure how it will pair with the Zenith in Moss but it does work alright with some greens!

    These will be doubleshot ABS.

Much appreciated.  It's a bit hard to tell from their renders, but it will be worth a shot regardless.

Depending on the pricing breakdown, it might be nice to see the 2 most used spacebars from the spacebars kit included in the 40s/Ortho kit. As it stands, those two kits are kind of tied together, given very few use a 6.25/7u spacebar.

    Just my 2¢.

Edit: nvm, kits are locked I see.

Thanks for the feedback. What I can say, is that when combined, the two kits will be slightly cheaper than your typical ortho/40s kit.

I'll still buy this but like others, I would of loved a dark green mod option.

I like those novelties. Nicely done  :thumb:
That deskmat has a very outstanding design, but to be honest it's a bit too much for me :( But I still like how u crafted something off the mainstream which fits the keyset very well!
When do you think you can post some quotes?

I’m not sure pricing will be up until the GB starts but it will be very aggressively priced and should match recent SA sets.

Only light green spacebars are Ortho - why would there be a 7u

I agree. I have a dark green build in the works and i absolutely would have grabbed these mods in a similar shade.

Added pricing to the first post and updated kit renders. Not all vendors have provided pricing yet but you get the idea. GB starts Friday!

I know it's a little late, but I believe the ISO kit is missing the UK ¬ ` key. I'm also not sure what purpose the R3 | / key has. ISO UK doesn't use that key.

Oh my! You’re correct. In fact it’s just the recent render update that this went wrong as my keyboard layout editor file has the correct key there and not the “4 $” key. I will get that corrected as soon as possible.

Thank you for your attention to this!

I've updated the ISO kit render with the proper legends now. Thanks again for catching that error!
