Hate to be so thick skinned, but I'm still looking for some replacement Filco caps for the left hand side part of the keyboard where I made the mistake of wiping down with ethyl alcohol a long time ago. Hoping to get away with paying just shipping for them  :p

I'm looking for a Windows 8.1 Pro license with activation key. My girlfriend has a Macbook Pro and can't play half the Steam games we have since she doesn't have a Windows OS to run in Bootcamp. I know it's a long shot, but if anyone is willing to give one away, we'd be so grateful.

I bought a win8 key for $22 from G2A a few weeks ago, it looks like their marketplace price is up to $52 now.

I'm still looking for a cheaper price if not free =/

XP doesn't support some of the newer titles. I'd need at least 7 to ensure that it's usable for gaming in the long run =/

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

which games wont run on XP?

anyway, you can download windows 7 and 8.1 for free to run in a virtualization from microsoft https://www.modern.ie/en-us/virtualization-tools

M$ is really nice nowadays that apple and google are filling in on being evil for them.

you can use it for 90days. after that it will limit your usage for 1h per session. but you can use the same files you already downloaded to just re-create the vms and use another 90days. forever.

i live by those vms to test older IE browsers on my linux boxes and they are solid. not crippled in any way. and it is a breeze to use... here how to use on filthy macs :) http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/95423/legally-run-ie-for-testing-via-parallels-on-mac-without-buying-windows

Any game that requires DirectX10/11 graphics won't run without a workaround on XP.

My girlfriend isn't exactly a tech-sav, which is why I need a legit copy so it becomes a one-time installation with no problems. There are other negatives to virtualization:

-it's more expensive than product keys for Windows 7/8
-it stunts performance since it requires additional programs to be running at the same time
-my girlfriend uses a 2012 Macbook Pro with low specs

Bootcamp comes free and already installed in her Mac, so I would prefer to just get a product key for cheap or--if possible--free.

I appreciate the alternate solutions, though ^^

the same vms work on bootcamp. everyone mentions parallels because who use those VMs for testing code on several browsers obviously do not wan to reboot every time. but for games you pretty much have to. unless you're a filthy casual :D

about being a one time solution... just put the partition with windows install on time machine or something. make a snapshot or whatever time machine calls it. and every 90 days you just restore the back up.

remember to have steam data on another partition tho.

honestly, nobody can avoid windows reinstals every 90days because of virus and slow downs anyway :P

I have 10 boxes that might be good for storing keyboards.  They measure 19 long x 7.5 wide x 1.5 deep (inches).  Let me know if you are interested in these and how many you would like, I will ship them to you.

It was really awesome for him to help us with these boxes!

That said, one of these days I am going to put serious time into designing spacers for my boxes. I have lots of big cardboard boxes, but they are nowhere suitable for holding keyboards unless I make internal shelves. not being good at visualizing things 3D I have been holding off working on this worthy project.

Normally I'm giving stuff away, but today I'm asking.  Anyone have a Model M spring?  I have one messed up spring on a board I just got.

And since I haven't worked much on Ms, do I have to pop off the rivets and bolt mod to replace a spring, or can I yank the one bad one and put a new one in?

Anyone have a Model M spring?

If you can figure out if F and M springs are the same, I can send you a flippy/spring from an F.

Look up the ripster chopstick method for some pictures but apparently you can jam a chopstick into the spring you want to remove, then rotate, and pull the whole assembly out. Definitely worth trying out before you disassemble it.

I believe they use the same springs.  The foot is different though.

It looks like I may actually need 5 of them, one for backspace, the two shifts, and enter.  I'm lubing them, but some are a bit sticky, so the spring might be dead.

honestly, nobody can avoid windows reinstals every 90days because of virus and slow downs anyway :P

You don't have to re-install Windows for updates.

I'll have a look around for you if I have some spare Window 7 copies... no promises though

They are not the same springs.  I have many M springs if you want one.

This chopstick methods sounds cool.  I use a safety pin and a pen for replacing springs without pulling them apart.

Does anybody want a bunch of Beanie Babies?  It could be useful for your kids or if you collect the things.  I don't know.  I just want them out of my room and into a home that wants them.

Someone adopt these Beanie Babies!

I have a couple t-shirts that I would like to offload.  They are Two Gingers whiskey t-shirts, which seems to be popular these days.  One is large, the other is XL.  Let me know if you are interested.

Here is a link to the photos because geekhack is being fickle every time I try to attach a photo:

Thanks to DamnDan for the Windows 7 product key. It's working perfectly so far. Glad I came here. Managed to get the key in time for our nine months.
