1992-1993 Olivetti Keyboard
« on: Tue, 28 June 2011, 03:17:08 »
Hi there!

Well, one friend of me was throwing away some old stuff, and then he came across this keyboard. He knows that Im a mechanical keyboard fan and a freak (he thinks xDD), so he saved the keyboard for me, but I cant figure out which keyboard is or what kind of switch it has.

I've been looking for information but I cant find any proper one, some say it uses Alps, some Buckling Springs, and some Rubber dome... And my friend cant tell me the concrete model.

Do you know what kind of switch it uses?

Thank you!!

I once looked for info for one, and found out Olivetti made a rubber dome keyboard that looks like that.

Could be a RD. But Olivetti keyboards are a lot so is not easy to tell.

BTW you cant go wrong with Olivetti keyboards, they are usually on par or better than the IBM counterparts.

No matter the technology used

The keyboard shown in the video is an ANK 27-102N and is a (fantastic) rubber dome.

Older models (sold with M24 and M21) were microswitch keyboards.

You can find more infos here

But they don't have NKRO, though. Right?

The right shift does look impressive, though. And, as was also said in the previous topic, the key profile looks pretty cool.

Really, what has bottom-dollar computing become the norm?

I touched one of them just the last week but was connected to a unix server not managed by me, so I haven't tested the *KRO functionality.

More correctly was, and although design was important for Olivetti, technology was more important.

Just to mention few things, the programma 101 was the first personal computer, sold eleven years before the Apple 1, the quaderno was the first form of netbook sold fifteen years before the eeepc, the envision was a mediacenter sold more than a decade before the competitors.

BTW the stupid italians were convinced that a good product was enough to sell it, while Apple (Jobs to say better) decided to sell a religion, a more effective move.

BTW unlike Ripster says Olivetti never went out of business, but shifted its interests to services and verticalized markets, not too different from what IBM did or HP is going to do.

Very recently some consumer product were launched with the Olivetti brand, but although good products, they lack the genial part and the superb quality of the true old olivetti products.

This sort of makes sense, on a tangent note.  Olivetti had a huge plant in Spain.  Later typewriters branded as Underwood but designed by Olivetti (Underwood 319) were made here.  Olivetti bought out Underwood in the 60s.

I'm sure they had a plant in Mexico too, the latest lettera 32 (sold even in Italy) were built there.

Ahoi!

So, I finally got the keyboard. The model is an "Olivetti ANK 27-102N". Its a RD, but Im surprised about the feeling. You cant compare it with a mechanical keyboard but its the best RD ive ever come across!

Here are some pics, my camera died because of low battery so Im recharging it for more pics, of the RD switches and etc.

The keyboard itself is almost 20 years old.
