Last call on preassembled Atreus keyboards
« on: Mon, 29 December 2014, 12:23:00 »
I've been selling the Atreus 40% ergonomic keyboard I designed last year (http://atreus.technomancy.us) as both a kit and a fully-assembled version for a few months now. I'll be moving to Thailand soon (http://technomancy.us/177) and I have made arrangements to keep selling the kits, but I won't be able to ship any more fully-assembled boards after I move.

$249 for the fully assembled boards, and of course the kits will continue to sell for $149.

I'm interested in a kit to build, so I suppose there is no hurry to order those.

Any plans to sell the kits in materials other than wood? What is the lead time looking like before kits are shipped?

Good luck with and congrats on your upcoming venture! I hope all goes as planned for you and yours, and that you are able to make an impact in those lives.

While the wood is really unique I imagine it increases the production time and costs more?

Thanks JD! Excited about the move.

The lead time is actually pretty bad right now; I am still working through the backlog of orders coming from the initial surge when I announced this publicly outside GH; yesterday I shipped an order that had been placed a month ago. But I think I'll be caught up before I make the move in mid-Jan, at which point it should only be a week or so of lead time.

I used to offer both acrylic and wood, but there wasn't enough interest in acrylic to continue keeping it in stock. However, I might bring it back once I work through the backlog of orders.

Oddly enough, the wood is both cheaper to produce and quicker to cut than acrylic. It is a bit more time consuming during assembly because you have to sand it and then apply the finishing oils, but for the kits this is done by the customers, so it doesn't really affect me.

Oh yeah, and if you want an acrylic board, you put in a special order for a kit without a case and then get it cut at a local laser place since the design is OSS: https://github.com/technomancy/atreus/tree/master/case/dxf
