SEALWoodworking - Back in the Shop!
« on: Wed, 23 September 2015, 10:00:20 »
Check Here for the latest update.

Hello, everyone!

I would like to introduce a new custom wrist rest and case building service, focused on delivering handmade exotic and hardwood accessories.
www.sealwoodworking.com

Some of you may have seen my thread where I built out a few hardwood 60% cases. I have been working on perfecting my design, and creating others. I'm now happy with the way my cases have turned out and would like to offer them on my site for sale. What I'm hoping to be able to do is create anyone that wants one, a custom made case and/or wrist rest. I have other stuff too, wine holders, cutting boards, pen holders, but I'm sure that isn't everyone's focus here. :)

There are different woods species to choose from, and different styles, including inays and mixed wood options. All the wood is either domestic (North American) hardwood, or exotic (not from North America). There are no laminates, particle board or wood from a standard "big box" store. All of the wood is purchased raw and hand finished. I do not typically use stains or polyurethane, instead I use high quality oils and waxes, along with a very fair amount of sanding. The result is a piece with a satin finish which showcases the wood's natural beauty. This type of finish is often found on fine quality furniture.

I have been a member here on GH for sometime now, and this community has given me more knowledge than I could have imagined. I would not be offering the service if I didn't intend on sticking around here and remaining an active part of the community. To me it is important that if I put myself out as offering a service, I will continue to maintain a relationship here to support it.

Case Features:
2 Standard  Designs:
Uniform Edge
Fat Front Lip
All cases include 5 M2 screws, 2 Large bumpons and 4 small bumpons.
Cases have brass risers inserted into the wood for secure attachment
Standard USB and DIP switch hole placement

Wrist Rest Features:
Beveled
Flat
See the sizing chart for standard sizes available

Standard Wood Choices:
Domestic:
Maple
Birdseye Maple
Curly Maple
Black Walnut

Exotic:
Lacewood
Leopardwood
Padauk
Purpleheart
Peruvian Walnut
Zebrawood
Tigerwood

Design Services:

Get a case or wrist rest custom made to your specifications. Want a fancy inlay? I have done both straight and wavy inlays in the past. With both veneer and custom cuts. Want a unique type of wood, shape or color? Do you need more information to make a decision? Fill our the form, or send me a PM and I can get you a custom quote, or answer any questions you have. If you have a specific design in mind, you can even include a quick sketch. Don't be afraid to ask for something unique!

There are also quite a few pre-made items up for sale now and ready to ship. I have purchases custom sized boxes and appropriate packaging materials to make sure everything is shipped safely and securely.

Nice! Like the site. And not only do I see you selling plenty of wrests and cases, but I know there are a ton of GHers that may drool over some pen holder action.
My wife I a also push her button . But now she have her button push by a different men. So I buy a keyboard a mechanicale, she a reliable like a Fiat.

Thanks :)

I love a good pen. Unfortunately my Mont Blanc is all scratched up because I didn't have a proper pen holder for it. I don't know why it didn't occur to me to just make one before recently. I'm a bit slow sometimes.  :p

I've actually got a couple more of those in the works too.

You are the man on so many levels.  :thumb: I can't wait to get your rest finished up and shipped out. I have it almost done. :)

I will have a few more designs being posted up in the coming days. People seem to be responding to the cases and the pen holders, and I've got some really neat stuff on both fronts, so stay tuned!

Truth. I stand by everything 100% But legit, that Tigerwood one is awesome. That wood is just amazing to work with.

Not to discourage anyone from picking one up now, but in the coming days I should have a few more examples, and at least one more design. Not to give anything away, but so far I'm pretty pleased with out it is shaping up.  :)

I hope I don't dissapoint! I have a couple of pretty involved inlay patterns I'm almost finished with. They take some time to setup, but with any luck I'll have something to post up on Monday. I really like to experiment with this stuff. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it is a learning experiance. :)

Well these are awesome.  :thumb: I only wish you were making these a few months ago when I splurged on a TEX case for my poker. Oh well, maybe it's time to break the wallet again and get a new keyboard. Do you offer compatibility with 60% keyboards that don't fit the standard 6 screw poker design? Or would that just be done through the "Design studio piece"?

Thank you!

For the cases, I can mount the screw holes anywhere, those are the last things that go in. I'm working on two right now, one is a V60 Matias style where the mounts are accessible from the bottom up, and also from the top down for universal support. I'm also a two piece case with a top and bottom layer (I haven't started that yet). If it is just a matter of moving the screw mounts then the cost is the same, you could just message me to let me know what you need. I may need the PCB depending on what it is, or at least detailed measurements. Something like a layered case would be a bit more expensive, since it is more material, and more labor. I'm always available over PM to discuss something to make sure you get what you want before placing an order.

Also, I have a few more that I'll be putting up at a discount in the coming days.

I absolutely take custom requests. Not everything is always possible - I'm constantly surprised at what people ask for, sometimes it is just not feasible with the tools I have or the time it would take. I'm always happy to work with someone to refine a design. :) Usually custom stuff costs a bit more. For a Smart68, I would need an existing case to make sure I get the measurements right. There are a lot of questions with that one...how would the button in the case front work, for instance? I am planning on picking one of those up, so it might be something I will have on hand to test with.

These are some great photos! I'm so glad you like the case. :) That leopard wood is pretty hefty. On par, or heavier than an aluminum case of the same size.

The SA profile looks really great with it - I think anyway, maybe I'm a little biased. :) I haven't been able to see one of the cases yet with SA because my sets have yet to be shipped. But I've been DYING to get my Hack'd set so I could try it out first hand. It was great to see it all together. Thanks so much for posting up some pictures, and your kind words.

I'm so glad you like it! I love that Tiger Wood. It had a smooth texture like Maple, but so much character, and heavy too. :)

Enjoy!

As promised, here are a few new items that will be in the store in just a few hours. I've got a pen holder in Curly Maple dyed blue with stainless steel legs, a 60% case in Maple with a walnut and purpleheart inlay, and a 60% wrist rest which I call "The Brick". There may be a few other pen holders up as well.

If you guys have any feedback, please let me know.

EDIT: New products listed. Get more information here.

Two orders of business today

1.) I'm taking a new shipping strategy and have updated shipping to be $2.95 for all domestic US orders. I haven't found any better method for international, but I'm working on it.

2.) New Pen Holder Design!

This is double sided. This example is made out of Purpleheart with one end being a 3 Pen Holder, when you flip it around you've got a 5 Pen holder. Each slot for the pen is 1-1/2" deep.
See here for more info!

Side Two:

Feedback is always appreciated. :)

I'm not sure...I may have gotten it lost in the shuffle. For a bit there I had about 15 people I was going back and forth with. I assure you it was not intentional.  I do my very best to stay organized, but I am aware that my system might not be fool proof just yet. I know I currently owe responses to 2 people, perhaps you are among those 2. Send me a PM, I'll make it right, and I do appologize.

In true geekhack fashion, the second a person tries to do something a personal crisis arises. We had a car accident this morning, and now I'm out a car. This is going to make progress on the open orders a little bit slower than I would like. I will send everyone an email that I owe an explanation to, but this is my all purpose alert. Everything will still go out, but I'll be a few days behind my regular schedule since I need to get all this sorted out.

Let this be a lesson: Texting and driving is dangerous! The driver that hit us was texting and completely unaware that she was about to slam head on into another car. Our car is now totaled.

Yeah we all came through okay. Cars these days are made with safety in mind (thank goodness!). Now I just have to deal with the logistics of needing to be one place, while he needs to be another and only having one mode of transportation. The girl that hit us didn't have a license, and probably no insurance, so that makes it a bit harder. We should be able to get a rental, but since they totaled it that is only covered for 3 days by our insurance. 3 DAYS! I can barley clean my living room once every three days, I dunno how I'm supposed to find a car!

When we got totaled by an 18 wheeler 2 xmas ago, the insurance gave us 3 days, too. And ON freakin Christmas with NYE coming right after. It wasn't easy. It took about 7 days to get our check, which ended up being very fair, but then we were still out $1k until the insurance companies got done fighting over fault (even though we got rear-ended while the truck was speeding and it was clearly their's) 6 months later.

For those whose orders are backed up a bit, you don't have to worry for even a second about inanis coming through. A little totaled car is not going to stop her from getting this work out that she is so proud of, and she'd never abandon GH because of a IRL hiccup.

Ordered a custom wrist rest from inanis and was not disappointed! Wanted a nice rest to match the hhkb I was going to be getting and she helped me along every step of the way in figuring out what I liked. She even went above and beyond and was messaging me about tracking as she was dealing with her car issues. Can't recommend her enough!

I hope you both like them! I love it when people post pictures.  :) I took pictures of both of these myself before I shipped them out just in case I didn't see them again.

Thank you for the kind words. The support from all of you is beyond appreciated.

Update on order status!

I am officially back in the shop as of yesterday. All open orders are currently being made and should be shipped early next week. I can't tell you how much I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding during this whole ordeal. I never thought getting in a car wreck (that was not my fault) could be as frustrating and draining as this was. You all have my gratitude.

Thank you again.

Quick update on things - all the stuff that got backordered due to my car accident has been shipped out, with the last one being scheduled for delivery today. For anyone involved with that, I just want to publicly thank you again for all your patience. Everyone was so understanding, and I'll never forget that kindness. There are a few recent open orders that I'm working on currently, but those will go out as planned, with no delay.

Also, I'll be posting up a few new items of in stock and ready to ship stuff once I have those completed, I'm in the process of starting these now. It will include some high profile cases in a few different wood types as well as some keycap display holders. I hope people will find the new stuff interesting.

Thank you!

Hey inanis,

I don't need an immediate quote right this moment, but I may be looking for some custom woodwork in the style of a Duck Viper case. Currently, there is an interest check going on for replacement Plate+PCB for Vipers (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=74953.0;topicseen), but no case will be offered.

I'm thinking of picking a set of these up and may want a custom case made. If this goes though, I can try to get the layout/schematics for the case profile. I just wanted to know if this was something that could be offered.

Here's what the layout is like. I'm sure we'll have more specifics when they come..

I've been asked about this style case a few times. I don't currently make one, but that doesn't mean I can't. The trouble is that I would need to have commitment from a few people in order to make something like this, and I would need a sample PCB/Plate to make sure I get the fit correct - I don't need to keep the PCB and Plate, just use it to check the fit.

I don't use a CNC for my cases, but instead a series of jigs which I use with a router to get the desired shape. I would need to setup a new jig for something like this, and I would only go through that effort if it was something a few people would be interested in. If I had a CNC it would be a bit different, but sadly, I do not just yet.

I know that is not a terribly straight forward answer, but if there is interest I would be happy to provide some quotes and what I have for wood varieties and we can go from there.

Thank you for thinking of me!

This is another one of those styles that I could do if there was interest from several people. It would be fairly expensive compared to the other cases i currently produce since it is essentially two full cases.

I need to get a CNC to make this kind of stuff easier. I promise, I have that in the works!

CPT better get to criminalizing himself.  :)

How expensive is "expensive"? I wouldn't mind coughing up the dough if it were made by you. Datamancer recently sold his on Md for $130, and he plans on listing them on is site for around $170.
