So imav, how come you dont have any geekhack t-shirts available on cafepress?
I think you should give a free t-shirt to the upcoming 300th member ;D

Stalled.

so what happened with that? Why did it stall?

Imav, wouldnt it be best to put it on cafepress? Some advantages:
--you wont have to shepherd each idea yourself, just have to 'approve' it at the geekhack store on cafepress. Less work for you.
--users can design their own and put them up (and other users can buy those if they especially like them). (some of the user-submitted designs on the thread above are pretty cool, actually!)
--users can choose what color t-shirt they want (wont be limited to black).
--users would also have more choice in price and type of t-shirt/sweatshirt etc. For instance the cheapest tee on cafepress is actually only $12.
--users can put the logos on anything they want, not just t-shirts.  Cups, mugs, etc. Whatever they want to buy. Even stickers.

I for one thought of writing out "geekhack.org" in various languages other than english (like sanskrit for instance). You know, kinda subtle ;) -- a url looks pretty funky written out in sanskrit. ;)

You know, I had an idea... one keycap from each of some of Geekhack's favorite keyboards, to make up the logo. (A vector version of this would be ideal for obvious reasons, and someone could probably make that in Illustrator or something, given pics of the keys (not me, I suck at that sort of thing)...)

So, 1391401 is obvious...

What else? I'm thinking... Filco Majestouch, HHKB Pro, Topre Realforce 86U, Model M spacesaver (give it a K or O, so that it's obvious that it's a spacesaver we're talking about...)

Anything else? (Actually, I think this is gonna be worthy of its own thread...)

I came up with this idea in the latest T-shirt thread...

(If that idea were to be implemented, 12 different models would be needed, this forum is big enough to come up with 12 different good models. So, for that thread, I'll submit the 12 most popular models. I will consolidate models that have keycaps that are identical, though.)

I'll start out with... IBM 1391401.

Then I would suggest the Das III. I think the fonts are really nice on those keycaps.

The Filco has nice lettering IMHO.

I actually did setup a cafepress store...but I need to design the appropriate logo.  I did a high res version of the site's logo, minus the ".org"  (so, "GEEKHACK").  But I like the idea is using keys from various keyboards.

Any one here with graphic design chops that would be willing to step up and help design a new logo that is t-shirt worthy?

I say we run with the idea of keys from multiple keyboards.  Probably the easiest way is for folks to upload high res picks of all the needed letters from a keyboard so we have options.  I'd say get a good portion of the surrounding keys and then they can be cropped.  (so, 'g', 'e', 'k', 'h', 'a', 'c')

HHKB will have to be represented...which should be from someone's white, labeled or the black, labeled Lite (which has white lettering on black keys).

A Filco 'boarrd should be there as they are great and have a decent-looking font as well.

Of course a Model M (I like the idea of using a key from the 84-key spacesaver that is obviously from that 'board.

Perhaps a black on gray key from an Endurapro (give Unicomp some love...maybe use the 'G' or 'H' so that the trackpoint can be seen).

Maybe a key from the SMK-88 or even the new Apple keyboard (simply because it is unique-looking).  I'd like to see Apple get some love in some form (maybe a key from an Apple Extended?)

This is a good idea, but won't most of these keys in similar colors be nearly indistinguishable from each other? Just a thought.

I 'G' from a black-on-grey Endurapro will be easily identifiable.  The keyboards designed for Apple have a  unique font.  If you used a key from the new Apple keyboard (chiclet keyboard), that would be very different.  As mentioned before, a key from a Model M mini (one with the numpad markings on it) would be identifiable by keyboard geeks.

So, I have to say I disagree.  As long as we make good choices, I think we can make each key very unique from each other.

And the Filcos have a notably different font, right?

So, we need to decide whether it's gonna be Geekhack or Geekhack.org.

A slogan on the back (something like "Life is too short to type on crappy keyboards" would be nice, too. (And, we'll need to pick a font for that... I think our oldest favorite would be the 1391401, so at that time, the graphics adapters of choice would've been MDA and CGA... and the MDA font is more aesthetically pleasing, so...

Here's the MDA font, in an image:

I guess I'd vote for something more subtle, or no slogan. I personally like t-shirts that are a little bit mysterious. then you get to answer questions when the pretty girls ask you, "what the hell is that?".

I merged this thread with the recent t-shirt thread in "off topic"...hopefully that doesn't confuse anyone.  :)

I initially thought just having "geekhack", but it makes sense to have "geekhack.org" so that it may drive some new members to the site.

We could certainly do one with no slogan as well as offer a few with different slogans on the back.  I like the suggestions so far, keep them coming.  We can vote on them later if you'd like.

Ultimately, I'd love to have a picture thread of members wearing their geekhack t-shirts around the world (with distinguishable landmarks in the background).  That just seems cool to me.

That's pretty cool. I think I'm gonna ask my wife to do something like that for me.

Hey, I almost dated a woman who was a bit of a keyboard snob, although horribly misguided - she hated ThinkPad keyboards, and, worse, this was her favorite keyboard:

(I got her to type on a Model M twice, and she didn't mind it, though, so there was hope... and, why I say she was a bit of a keyboard snob... she was able to actually state why she disliked the ThinkPad keyboard (and all laptop keyboards) - the reduced stroke of all laptop keyboards, the reduced key pitch of the machine she was using (4:3 X-series models have a shrunken keyboard - IIRC, 96% of full-size,) and she likes the full 101/104 layout with numpad.)

That Dell has some good points that I'd like to see in other boards. For ex. the lower edge of the first (space bar) row is rounded which is more comfortable for keys that you hit with the side of your thumb. Also, the case is quite small. Of course its a rubber dome but someone tried to make a good board under bad preconditions.

I can see where lowpoly has a point. I would go a step further and remove the numpad, a dell mini it would be, and pick your choice of switch. On the other hand, these boards have a fair amount of flex to them, but that could be fixed with a metal plate and thicker plastic.

Not exactly saying much here - they also have the same mechanism as every $2 bargain bin keyboard. ;)

(And, even, the same mechanism as some "Model M"s... although I refuse to call a rubber dome board a Model M, hence the quotes.)

I have a Dell SK-8135. I only used it for a week and started to feel numbness in my fingers and pains in my hands. :(

Nice design though. I liked the curved keys on the bottom row and the keyboard felt well made, sturdier than the Cherrys I own. The spacebar was noisy compared to the rest of the board, I found this really irritating.
