Their email suggested that it'll be in black only, with matte black PCB.

Hello,

I've checked your website and I've noticed the two projects CU65/CU80  you are running got lot of delays.
So I'm a bit scared with this new CU7 project, what are your projected delays for this macropad ?

Group buy already ran in 2020. Folks in the US likely could have gone in on it if they wanted to (I don't think it was geo-restricted).

Unfortunately it looks like you're going to have to wait for a second round if the designers choose to run it again.

I ordered a CU7 in the extras round, paid in May. Last update from caps unlocked regarding the shipping was in early July. Nothing since. No replies to e-mails either.

Exit scam or just delays and poor communication?

All you had to do was join Discord server, that's all :) There you can find all info you need. I would advise you to avoid using terms like "exit scam", please.

I don't think a buyer should be expected to join a Discord chat to get info on the delivery on something that was promised earlier, while e-mails get ignored. Do you have any info or just all that snark?

As far as I know when joining a GB, at least in most cases, it is now customary to use Discord to keep up to date on progress.
In the case of capsulocked, the Discord server is one of the most active - at least among those I personally follow. Caps isn't always responsive to personal responses - via email or Discord. But the updates are constant.
If you are participating in the GB - like me - you should have received updates via email: in any case they are also published on the site directly.

Imagine having to join a Discord for all the group buys you entered... Anyways this isn't a problem for me, but I think it's understandable for some people to prefer different forms of communication over others.

Also when we hand over $$ for a group buy we're giving a certain amount of trust, which doesn't make us entitled to regular updates. However, it would be nice, respectful, and wise to update your customers

I absolutely agree.
I have personally participated in CU80 R2 and CU65 R2, and am currently in CU7 R1 and CU1 R1.
I have subscribed to the capsulocked newsletter and through that I have always received constant and very precise updates.
Caps is very active on its Discord server: it is not always fast in personal responses. The boy is alone and has to do everything - personally I think he is also doing too many things together ... - so it is understandable that the space for personal answers is reduced to the minimum necessary and to things, I assume, urgent.

It is not minimum necessary to not give an update on the status and not replying to customer queries. I ordered mine in the extras round, and nowhere did it say I need to join discord if I want to know what's up

This is the last email update from 30th of July

How about people who do not live in UK/US? I have tried contacting them for over a month, using email, their website form, twitter. What would you do? Wait patiently or contact your credit card company? Except from discord, as I don't want to join a chatroom to chat about this, just need an answer

It was communicated well before the GB ended that the shipping order would be UK first, then international (USA etc.) and last EU. (On Discord of course, the one that obviously requires superhuman effort to be used  :p)

Which part of the "The boy is alone and has to do everything" - that you quote - is it so hard to accept?

Someone is in a mood. For you it seems to be sufficient to have customer service in a chat room but not everyone lives in a basement hooked to chatrooms all day.

I did get a reply from capsunlocked. The orders are waiting because they cannot print labels. This has been going on for a while. So I paid in May and now this persons printer is broken so they cannot possibly fulfill the order. No estimate for time, nothing. Just....can't print, sorry.

You probably love **** like this. Who cares let's just throw money into the air and meet in chatrooms to talk about it!

LMAO. Regardless of this back and forth, this might be the most accurate description I've seen about this market.

I ordered this thing too.. Honestly my bar on wait time is pretty low. I'm in the GB for Dracula. My money has been dead for a hot min.

It's not that their printer is broken. That you believe their entire operation is hung up because of a faulty printer is... astounding.

They are running into technical issues with international orders and DPD

Quote
Several months ago we streamlined our shipping providers from Hermes, Royal Mail and DHL, solely to DPD. This was because we wanted to work with a distributor that could handle all shipping, Domestic and International.

Domestically we are extremely satisfied with DPD’s services, and many UK customers have been using their products from the group buys listed above for several weeks. Despite this we have been experiencing several issues with importing international shipping addresses into DPD’s shipping client. We have been working to resolve these issues alongside DPD and are happy to say that shipping labels are now being generated for non-EU customers. Although non-EU customers are now receiving tracking information, we would like to inform you that most EU addresses are currently being rejected by DPD’s system. Neither us, nor DPD, are aware of what is causing these issues to be rejected but it is being looked into.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all well.

Apologies for not posting updates here, I will ensure they are from now on.

I am currently shipping out International orders. As many of you are aware, there were issues with importing International Addresses into DPD's system, however I can confirm that yesterday I imported all of the orders including the orders for the extras (59XX+). If you have not received an update from DPD it means that your address has some issues that I need to manually resolve but I am working through them. I am going to put all of the affected orders into a public Google Sheet so you will be able to check if yours is.

I am working on a lengthy update regarding the final shipping roadmap and will post ASAP.

I know that lots have gone out over the past couple of months; I hope you are enjoying the CU7 (please send pictures!) - looking to hearing your thoughts!

Thanks for your patience over the past few months, I really appreciate it and I am working to get them out ASAP.

A warning to anyone that is considering any future Caps Unlocked products or GB's. AVOID.

There is a constant repeating that Caps Unlocked is one guy alone and boy, does that really show. If you're going to try and run a company, serving hundreds if not thousands of customers around the world, at least try to be professional, give updates and respond to emails/support chat.

GB's are continuously delayed with no explanation or update and when you try to message on the discord, you are encouraged to go through the website's email support form. You email him and then basically get ignored - sending 3, 4, 5 emails and still no reply whatsoever.

If you go onto the discord channel, you can easily find loads of people with similar issues, the toxicity levels in there is insane (just type the word "toxic" into search and you'll find loads of complaints) - all the same thing, that CU constantly runs overlapping GB's when previous GB's haven't even finished yet. People who ordered extras are receiving theirs before people who joined original GB (sorry but this is not how it should be ran, poor professional protocol). Loads and loads of complaints about CU not responding to emails. People say he responds quickly on discord but sometimes he disappears and ignores you.

The recent CU65 R3 GB had issues too - the mentioned "foam" that was supposed to be supplied is missing, there was apparently an issue in the factory and they forgot to include the foam in the kit. Did we find out through an email update from CU? No. You had to go onto the discord and ask and people would point you to a random post in the discord channel. Was there a solution to this or a fix? No. It was just a "Oh well factory messed up, no foam guys". So people are left to have to sort out their own fix (not even instructions supplied from CU officially on best option to go for). There were manufacturing defects on the keyboard as well, poor QC that should have been checked by CU before sending out products, but no, customers receive defected products and then CU refusing to sort it out and wants the customer to pay for returns postage (even though this is a defect coming from CU, the least that can be done is CU cover the return fees). People asking endlessly for updates/answers and just gets ignored by CU, who then continuously posts and launches new GB's before current ones even finish, very frustrating and not the proper way to run a business professionally. The basic understanding of fulfilling orders to your customers and answering emails, giving updates when things happen - all of this is poorly lacking. Again, if you want proof, just go onto the discord and you'll find all similar situations.

At the end of the day, everyone saying that this is a one-man show running things really show, but it is an unprofessional business and one too hopeful, with eyes bigger than the stomach. The products are not bad (albeit very basic, products are delivered in paper wrapping and bubble wrapping, no official boxes or anything, the keyboards are super basic, but that's fine if that's what you want). Most importantly, finish the GB's before starting another one and send updates and reply to your customers - ignoring email after email and messages on discord will only cost you in the long term. Again, if you want proof, just look at this thread alone and then go onto the discord and you'll find loads of similar stories.

Please stop defending unprofessional behavior from gb runners. That went really really wrong with Rukia, trust me, we all learned a lesson there.
Let people voice their complaints, its a gb runners job to adress those as long as they are voiced in a proper way.

I'm sorry, but if it's correct to let people complain - and mind you, I totally agree - it should be fair to let people argue.

And about "its a gb runners job to adress those as long as they are voiced in a proper way": I don't think the sentence "A warning to anyone that is considering any future Caps Unlocked products or GB's. AVOID." is to be considered as a "proper way".

A correct way would be to discuss what problems there are and how to solve them and not cut off the conversation by saying "do not buy".

Plus the spiel that is always repeated that "Caps Unlocked is one guy alone and boy" is boring to the extent that we must always point out that there are constant updates via newsletters, just subscribe and read.

Were there any problems during the GBs? Yes, quite a lot. It's frustrating? Sometimes yes, of course. Personally my first CU65 (R2) arrived without screws, I had to wait 2 weeks for them. And I'm still waiting for the related additional PCB - which I hope comes with the CU7 R1 I'm waiting for.
Could some of these problems have been avoided? I honestly believe so. But at the end of the day, what matters is that everything arrives and that the product is functional and that it fulfills what it promises. We are always talking about buying groups and not about mass production.

I would therefore like that instead of saying "AVOID" we discuss in a more mature way: this would also lead Caps Unlocked to respond more effectively. Or at least I hope so  :p

Sorry but that does not help. There has been so many times when people are sending emails to support and they are plainly just being ignored. How can you be selective as to which support emails you want to respond to? And then ignore the others? Basically avoiding any emails that you decide is not worth your time or effort to help resolve? That is not how you run a business. Even as I type this, I am still seeing messages in the discord server where people are asking for replies to their emails sent days and weeks ago (even months ago).

How do you solve these issues then, if the guy won't reply to emails at all? There are literally people who have been waiting for replies for a while now and it doesn't seem like Caps Unlocked is willing to respond to them at all - for whatever the reason is (either he doesn't think it's worth it financially for him or he's choosing to ignore the difficult emails because it's easier for him to lose a couple customers in the short term? Who knows). What do you expect people to do when they haven't received a response in months? Apart from physically turning up at the Caps Unlocked office address to get his attention?

Poorly run unprofessional business. You can keep defending the guy all you want, but when there are LOADS of people in the same situation, being ignored, not receiving answers to their issues with the products, not receiving the products, then people have a right to be fed up and warn others about the type of service (or lack of) that is being displayed by this company. It ruins the reputation of this community.

[...] You can keep defending the guy all you want, [...]

It is not my intention to defend "the guy": if you read carefully what I have written you will see that I agree in saying that there are problems, and that I'm one of them too who have them.
And - as I've already written - it's okay for people to complain and report if something is wrong.
But there is a fine line between what is complaining and what is discrediting.
I personally think that discrediting someone is also a behavior that damages the community, don't?
I think it is fair to highlight the problems that have emerged in recent months but if I were a first time buyer, based on some comments that have gone down heavy with caps unlocked, I would be very scared.
I think about when I started participating in the GB and how it was a very different experience compared to a purchase on a market place and compared to the support of a company.
Making certain attacks scares newcomers and I don't think that's fair.

Well that is called consequences. I have spent so much time trying to get into touch with capsunlocked and I have no idea why they aren't replying.

At the same time, I am waiting on a product from a small chinese company, an audio unit that is being developed currently but I preordered it recently. The two man team will answer queries and keep people updated on a nearly daily basis, they have also stressed out that if you need a refund at any time, you'll get it immediately for any reason.

I was very happy with my first keyboard purchase from capsunlocked. It was in stock, a Varmilo keyboard, and was delivered swiftly. Now I am trying to exercise my right for a refund, have tried all possible channels but getting no reply. Why shouldn't prospective buyers know about these issues? If the community cannot get itself together, it is going to be harmed. The customer isn't to blame there.

"Is the customer always right" as they say, right?
The problem here is that in our case it is not a purchase of a stock product produced by an international vendor.
You wondered for a moment why - and you wrote it yourself - caps unlocked was so fast in delivering a stock product and instead with a GB ... ?

I would recommend you to read this post: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=77272.0 and this too: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=70569.0.

There you will find many useful information to understand - first of all - how to deal with a GB and how to correctly manage the problems you have highlighted. Enjoy the reading

Yeah I said it like that because I know what the difference is, so that there is no need to splain that for me.

The uncommunicativeness is the problem. Regardless of if you sell in stock or GB that is a problem. I understand that it can take a long time. That is not the problem. There was a point there it took months to have any update on what is going on, and zero replies to queries. In this thread as well capsunlocked says "just ask us!", but once asked, nothing.....
If there is one thing hurting the hobby here, it is the seller who does not reply to their customers.

If there is one thing hurting the hobby here, it is the seller who does not reply to their customers.

In summary, the issues you are complaining about are therefore two: the alleged lack of updates and the failure to answer questions.
The problem of the lack of updates is non-existent: here on geekhack the posts were very limited, it is very true, but the newsletters from the site and the info on Discord were many, timely and unfortunately frustrating - due to the delays and the thousand problems with shipments.
A dashboard has also been set up on the site to get the latest updates on the status of the various GBs: https://caps-unlocked.com/dashboard/.
So I don't see how you can complain about a lack of updates: I have personally participated in many GBs and by far those on caps unlocked are among the most constant in terms of updates.

As for the lack of response: it's true, I've also noticed that there have been times when many have complained about delays. At one point it was given as an indication to use the page on the site to send messages: https://caps-unlocked.com/contact-us/.
I personally made use of it and the answer came to me: therefore it does not seem to me that the situation is as unmanageable as it is portrayed.

I therefore believe that it is better that you use that channel to reach caps unlocked.

I'm not saying this is the best way to handle the situation, try to understand my point of view. It is evident that there are some critical issues in the management of a GB with certain numbers by caps unlocked, I think this is clear to everyone. Although it was delayed it was communicated that in this phase the main attention is aimed at concluding the shipment of the units still waiting.
This is the situation, and caps unlocked has apologized several times for what happened. Fortunately, the situation seems to be resolving well and I'm sure the replies to your messages will arrive too.

I am guessing Capsunlocked is your friend by how much you defend him.

I invite everybody that is interested in caps-unlocked products to read this reddit thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/po2nin/cu7_round_2_group_buy_is_live_black_and_white/

There are many and more severe issues beyond just a lack of communication.

One that several of my friends experienced was no VAT Refund for EU buyers of R1 since apparently he didn't have enough funds to refund people.
EU buyers were charged VAT twice, the UK one when they joined the GB and then another time from their country upon receiving their order.

This was just plain illegal but he refused cancellations and also refused to refund the UK Vat like he should have done.

Exactly. And that is why I warned people, AVOID!

People need to stop encouraging others to join GB's from this guy/company, it's absolute untrustworthy and unprofessional business practices. He alone gives a bad name to the keyboard community.

There are plenty other GB's that you can trust. This is not one of them. You can't take the gamble that you might be one of the people who receives their product and is fine, because if you aren't and you have an issue, it's goodbye to any resolution/solution to the issue as you will never get a reply from Caps Unlocked, ever.

It's people like this that are ruining the keyboard community.

I fully understand that there is a delay getting back to emails and the frustration this causes but I can confirm that no customers are intentionally ignored.  I think your last comments however are completely baseless and false.

You are implying that the products are unreliable / have poor build quality, which is simply false. Any faulty units are/have been replaced, not only for the CU7 but for all other group buys as well. I am really happy with the production quality, but admittedly a handful of cases/PCBs from any group buy will have issues - this goes for any product. Pretty much all of the products shipped don't develop ay faults and are enjoyed by customers.

> People need to stop encouraging others to join GB's from this guy/company, it's absolute untrustworthy and unprofessional business practices. He alone gives a bad name to the keyboard community. / It's people like this that are ruining the keyboard community.

I'm honsetly not sure how you have come to this conclusion and I am sorry if this is really how you feel. I understand that email response times / communication can be improved, I am aware of these issues, but to say that I am an individual that is ruining the keyboard community, one that I very much enjoy and support is quite frankly absurd. Considering that all of the group buys, despite delays, have been fulfilled / are being fulfilled I am unsure as to why you believe I am "untrustworthy". "He alone gives a bad name to the keyboard community" - again I think this is simply an unjustified baseless personal attack. Pretty much everyone that has purchased our products enjoys using them. In addition to this I have constantly looked to make mechanical keyboards more accessible for those looking to get into the hobby. Since the launch of the CU80 it's price has fallen from £150 to sub-£100; similar comparisions can be made for the CU65. There was a price increase for the CU7 (and there will be for the CU80) but this was due to components getting more expensive.

The CU7 has received a wide amount of praise and I am grateful for the support.

I am open to criticism with communication, I admit once again that response times can be improved and once the CU7s have shipped I will be looking to recruit for positions such as customers support / communications - but I disagree with claims that I am untrustworthy or that the products have build quality issues. I've spent almost 6 years building this; I am proud of what has been achieved but admit that there are some growing pains that need to be overcome.

You only commented about the communication that can be improved, which is just one of the many problems that a lot of people have had.

Why did you totally ignore my comment about you charging the VAT twice, which was just illegal?
And your mods just banned any people that voiced their opinion on this subject from your Discord.
