[IC] GMK Boneyard
« on: Wed, 04 March 2020, 07:49:00 »
GMK Boneyard

GB starts in June 2020

In GMK Carbon R2 I offered an extension kit called the “Boneyard Alphas”. Those Alphas could only be used with the base kit and this combination was definitely too expensive for some people. So I decided to offer GMK Boneyard as a stand alone Set.
With this approach I hope to offer you an affordable set in these subtle colors. In order to honor people who joined GMK Carbon R2 with Boneyard this set does not offer R0 and R5 rows. But I guess most people will appreciate the decision for traditional row constellation.
Surely you can expect that – MAYBE (not promising) I will do the same for other Carbon R2 extensions like Umka or Beezarre.
Anyway this here is GMK Boneyard IC.

Vendors:

Base kit

The base kit offers only the necessary key for 60%, 65%, TKL, WKL, 100% and 1800er layouts. I do expect the base kit to get very competitive pricing.

40% kit

This kit is also designed to be affordable. Thus it includes only necessary keys for most 40% layouts and it contains all currently available spacebars for layouts with split spacebars. Additionally it includes extra B key for layouts like TGR Alice.

Novelties kit

Most of all my sets do offer some sort of novelties and Boneyard is not an exception. The theme is here obvious. Its about Pirates/Buccaneers which adds some adventurous touch to it.
Currently I am considering to add Domino keys from Rolling Bones kit. But this will definitely increase the pricing significantly. So its up to discussion.
Also the Kraken Buccaneer Skull is not final and i still might change and tweak few details.

Domino kit

Other things to consider is also to make a matching Deskmat with Kraken Buccaneers Skull.

Renders will follow.

Lovely. It's one of my favorite sets.

Do you think you could add the R5 keys for the Buccaneers novelty kit for those who already own Bone/Boneyard?

Minor comment: given the alphas and the mods use the same color, perhaps two copies of the R2 1.5U \| key are not needed (just as you already axed the mod-colored `~ key).

Awesome. 2 requests.

1. See how there's an R1 key that's the two bones, no skull? Could there be a backspace novelty key like that? Always wanted a key there in rolling bones.

2. A skull enter key with inverted colors. Two reasons here. One, accent key! Two, its a bone (pun intended!) for us who bought the Umka kit.

Hi, I'm a big fan of carbon Bone.
How about building two novelties kits to keep up with the Original BONE kit?

1. Kraken and Skeleton
2. Cards and Dice(Dominoes)

One of the great appeals of bone kits is rolling bones, so I think it's a good idea to split them as well.

*As of now, it does not seem to make a big difference from GMK nines. I would also like an inverted carbon alpha kit. PLEASE :0
anyway, I LOVE R4 again.

GMK Nines was "inspired" by this set, but using stock colors.

Good catch <3 I'll remove this key in the next update.

1. I might look into it but i do not promise i'll do it. I got quite demanding standards if it comes to novelties.

2. I am against accent keys right now. Umka and Boneyard are thematically two completely different sets and i would not like to see skull and bones on Umka. Umka will get its own Novelties but only if i get a really good idea (again here i got my own standards).

Hi, I'm a big fan of carbon Bone.

1. Kraken and Skeleton
2. Cards and Dice(Dominoes)

One of the great appeals of bone kits is rolling bones, so I think it's a good idea to split them as well.

Right now i don't want to introduce another kit and rolling bones as such is made only for GMK Bone and i will offer it only with GMK Bone. So the only thing i consider right now is to add Domino keys. Anyway things are not set in stone completely and i might reconsider some decisions.

*As of now, it does not seem to make a big difference from GMK nines. I would also like an inverted carbon alpha kit. PLEASE :0
Nines is based on Boneyard and uses stock colors. In person Boneyard has warmer shades. Thus you can't mix it with Nines.

We need R5 !!!

Right now i decided for R4 bottom row due to many requests in GMK Carbon R2. I might consider this in possible future runs.

Indeed and this is where it goes out of boundaries if you try to make R0 and R5 compatible. Guess i probably have to drop the support for GMK Carbon R2.

I like my r5 numpad enter as much as the next guy, but I’d rather have the novelty kit as is and not have the r5 numpad enter than lose the chance entirely.

I also can’t be the only person who’d pay a few bucks for other people’s r5 novelties so I could have 4 or 6 for the bottom row.

I honestly don't care for R0. At all.

If no numpad enter can be added then the kit as is is fine. I'd rather have something than have nothing at all.

But if you'll take off all R5 then there's not much more for me to say than GLWGB.

The rolling bones would be a nice addition, imo that is what makes this really unique. Also, would you consider an additional R0-5 kit, kind of like the upcoming kit for GMK WoB. Just an option for people who want those 2 rows.

Pardon but i want to keep the costs as low as possible. So basic layout support only. The 1.5u Super key is very niche.

I would've preferred the dominos/rolling bones style novelties to the r5/0 extension personally but I can see why it'd probably be most productive go to with Carbon r2 compatibility instead.

I agree. It seems weird to me that the novelties kit now comes with keys that are incompatible with the base kit being offered. I would much rather the novelties kit come with more compatible keys than being backwards compatible with a past GB. If backwards compatibility is that important then this GB should be R0-R5.

I personally do love R0 and R5 more then the traditional row constellation. And I agree that OG rows (R0/R5) are absolutely superior on 75% layouts like Octagon. However i want to give this time a chance for people who like traditional rows.

Dude my vision must suck because I've had GMK N9 next to boneyard alphas and I've never realized they were different colors...

serious bruh moment right here

Okay the issues with my color perception aren't as serious as I thought. Here's my Nines/Boneyard Alphas Combo. Wish they contrasted more so I didn't have to buy MoDo  ;D

Any chance of inverted-color accents like in Nines? N9 legend on U9 base.

Update

I am happy to announce that I teamed up with beamingrobot and he will be the SEA (South East Asia) Vendor for GMK Boneyard. His store Monokai will go online probably in few weeks.

Any chance of inverted-color accents like in Nines? N9 legend on U9 base.

This was already requested before. Anyway i want to keep it monochrome. And adding accents will also enforce novelties in accent colors which i personally don't like.

I did offered vim keys in GMK Carbon R2 and they did not sell well. 53 from 100 MOQ.

I think you will still be able to get those in Recap sale.

The photos were done at around 14:00. The light is day light coming in from the side window. The photo are straight out of my Fuji camera using the default film simulation and auto white balance. No color adjustment were done from my side. The only thing i did is dust removal.

For the given daytime the colors are pretty correct. Keep in mind during the course of the day a human color perception changes as well as the environment light conditions. In my opinion it changes drastically.

GMK ASCII uses stock 2B GMK color. That color is way lighter than the gray color used here.

I do have more pictures for the Carbon gray (this is the gray from GMK Carbon and its also used in GMK Oblivion mod base color)

Full Album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/151659186@N03/albums/72157707578827905

Tho those photos were done under artificial light which by any means are professional lights.
But anyway i do always prefer day light to any artificial light (following photo displays GMK Carbon but in different day light conditions).

Regarding R0 and R5: i will figure out by how much the extra R0 and R5 keys increase the pricing in Novelty kits. If those extra keys increase the price by great amount then i will remove these. Otherwise they'll stay.

Carbon R2 had R0/R5 support directly integrated into its base kit. Here it will require an extra kit for it which i would love to make but it would be as expensive as the base kit which is not viable.

I offered these rows already in GMK Carbon R2. Now i want to offer Boneyard in traditional row constellation.

The traditional row constellation is also more accepted among the community where the OG row constellation is more dividing. For example i prefer OG rows to traditional rows always but i am also OK with traditional rows. Say overall you reach with traditional rows greater audience which makes it easier to reach MOQ. Does not mean i and other designers will not utilize the OG rows in a base kit. Its a strategic but also design decision. So far the only keysets which offered the OG rows in their base kits were: GMK Carbon R2 and GMK ASCII.
I hope to see more sets doing it.

Gotcha. I'm biased because I prefer the R0/R5 and wished more sets had them. I bought GMK Iris because it has R0/R5 even though I didn't like the colors.  :D

I looked at all the pictures in this thread super closely and still can't tell the different between Boneyard and N9. The best comparison picture I can find is this one:

Is it fair to say that Boneyard is slightly slightly darker than N9? I guess the two colors are indistinguishable to my eyes anyway so I might as well just consider them as the same.
KMAC2 - Matrix Lab 8XV2.0 - TGR Jane v2 CE - KBD8X MKII - Meridian - Matrix Lab Noah - Fallacy x2 - MGA Standard - Geon Frog mini - Amano - Ciel60 - Prime_Elise - Matrix Lab 6XV3.0 aka Corsa

Carbon's grey is a warmer grey than N9 from Dolch (or Nines), and the ivory color of Carbon is lighter than the beige of Classic / OG Cherry sets.

If you compare the sets in person they are different. I don't have nines but i was at meetup and i had the sets side by side and the difference is pretty visible.

Thank you both!

I have a hard time debating between this and GMK Nines. The only thing that holds me back from Nines is the lack of N9 split spacebar. It's impossible to find skiidata or terminal spacebar kit on r/mm

I like Boneyard better personally.

For Nines or anything N9 esque I'd just wait for a second run of OG space keys to happen sometime in the future. I'd leave the N9 stuff to the classic (Dolch) and colored (Terminal, Hydro, etc) sets.

I also updated the vendor for South East Asia. Monokai store is still the vendor but i updated it with the link to the store ;)

Kraken Buccaneers kit
- Kraken Buccaneers skull has been reworked. As i noted on the first page before the Kraken Buccaneer Skull was considered for a change so here it is.

I watched this scene a month ago and i was thinking about the color difference (Boneyard vs N9) discussion here  :))    <--- oh well laugh emoji does not work...

Make sure to never ask anything about this grey. It’s so custom it can’t even be compared to anything seen before and just asking I heard might make the designer suspect you of trying to copy his work because like I said this grey is so custom it’s basiclalt tomboy patented.

Could you add R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn for 65%/75% users? Or at least add a R4 1u Meta (or something similar) that could work as R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn together with the R3 Code.

I also think the set would look cleaner with “Pg Up”, “Pg Dn” legends instead of “Page↲Up”, “Page↲Down”, “Num” instead of “Num↲Lock”, and “Scroll” instead of “Scroll↲Lock”.

Adding to the 40s kit a 1.25u R4C would be nice for my upcoming Keebio Quefrency build.

But I'll just use something from the Buccaneers kit instead.

I am 65%/75% user but i want to keep the cost as low as possible. There is an R4 Fn key which might function as Meta.

I also think the set would look cleaner with “Pg Up”, “Pg Dn” legends instead of “Page↲Up”, “Page↲Down”, “Num” instead of “Num↲Lock”, and “Scroll” instead of “Scroll↲Lock”.
I get it that some people like single lines for visual consistency (which does not work on the other hand if you want to use stepped and worded caps lock). Anyway in my sets its always "Page Up" and "Page Down". I want full description of a key - if its possible. That's just my preference. And even if I personally don't like “Pg Up”/“Pg Dn”, it does not brake the sets for me from set designers which do like it.

Adding to the 40s kit a 1.25u R4C would be nice for my upcoming Keebio Quefrency build.

I'll add 1.25u spacebar to the 40s kit in the next update.

Code, Fn can't really be used as PgUp, PgDn, though, that was the point of my message. Including R3 Code, a key that's only used verbatim on one 65% keyboard (Uniqey C70), kind of goes against keeping the cost down. You should either replace it with R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn, which are more popular, or at least add another generic key, like Meta, that would make Code usable in this case (Fn isn't generic).

This is fine. In your case, it makes sense since you're also using Scroll Lock and the Print/Break sublegends. It's mostly inconsistency that I have a problem with, e.g. using Page Up/Down but using Scroll or Lock (e.g. Oblotzky's sets).

In all my sets you will find an R3 Code key (Raw in Denim). The reason for this is because I am using it for "any key" key (in layouts with wkl bottom row it is when winkey) and it will stay there.

Hm, I'm probably missing something here, please bare with me. What use does a R3 mod-colored “any key” have? If I understood your message correctly, you use it as a R3 winkey? If so, do you put it in the right column on 65%/75% boards? Are there any other use cases besides that and the C70 Code? Do you think any of them are objectively common enough to warrant including that key over, or at least alongside, the more popular options (namely, R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn)? Please help me understand your reasoning here.

Indeed this key is non standard. Other sets do not include that key and i am forced to use + key from numpad which is ok.
Since this is my project this key is included in the base kit (like it was done in all my projects before).

Alright, thanks for the explanation, I'll keep this in mind moving forward. This also explains why I found an extra 1u Code key when I was sorting my GMK Yuri set the other day :D

Seeing as that key is staying, and that you don't want to add too many new keys, I'd like to propose adding a single R4 “any key” again (sorry if I sound like a broken record). Together with the R3 Code, this would be able to replace R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn for those of us who need these keys (Fn would not work here). The legend could be anything generic, but Any, Meta, Salt, or even another Code would work well. I personally think Bone would be pretty cool, but that involves creating a new mold, so it's probably a no-go for such a small change. This R4 “any key” could also serve as an Fn2 key for HHKB layouts like the M60-A default one. There's probably a few other, more obscure use cases for it that I can't think of right now, but I think just PgUp, PgDn on its own makes it worth it. Thing is, Nines didn't have these R3, R4 keys either, which sucks. I'd really like to be able to use one of my favorite colorways on my favorite layout and cover it “properly”.
It's okay if you decide not to include this key, but please give it another think over :thumb:

By the way, I just noticed that there is a R3 1u '" key in the 40% kit. Seeing as this is a two-tone set, that key is practically a duplicate of the '" key in the base kit, so it doesn't serve any practical purpose as far as I can tell. Remove it?

Base kit
- Added R4 1u Meta key

It's okay if you decide not to include this key, but please give it another think over :thumb:
See the base kit changes ;)

40% kit
- Removed "' key which is duplicate as its already available in the base kit
- Added 1.25u spacebar

Kraken Buccaneers kit
I got two quotes from GMK for this kit. One quote was with R0/R5 support and one without. So it was done to compare the pricing and unfortunately it increases the pricing significantly. Thus i decided not to support those Rows in this GB. I hope you can understand my decision.
- R0/R5 Rows support has been removed.

I think the skull with a tentacle beard has to be the most badass novelty I've ever seen. I'm considering picking this kit up just for that novelty. Heck, I may need two novelty kits so I can use two of those as split spacebars.

just to throw it in, i bet you already have thought about it in the design process, but what about aligning the iso novelty centered in the "thinner" area of the cap?

like on the right side:

looks a bit better imo.

Yeah i did thought about in the design process of Toxic already, which has also similar vertical skull design. And it should be seen in the whole picture and single key should be ignored. See following renders:
Centered on the bottom iso part.

Centered on the top iso part.

Obviously the skull looks in the first render off where in the second render its balanced.

Would you consider adding a 3u spacebar to the 40s kit?

As far as i know, 3u spacebar does not exist.

oh, yeah, i totally overlooked this in Toxic. you're right, in the complete picture it hasn't that much effect anymore like it has when looking at the single keycap. that's what counts.

GMK has a 3u convex spacebar now, but no ones run a set with it yet. Modern Dolch R2 is the first set I’ve seen where it’s planned.

I've heard that GMK proactively invested in tooling for this key, among others. Several sets plan on using it, including GMK ThinkCaps, GMK OG Spacekeys R2 and GMK MoDo R2.

Well i did not know that about the 3u spacebar. However i've send the kits as they are already to GMK for quotes and due to Corona it takes some time them to answer. If i don't get the quotes next week then i fear it will be late to add that spacebar to the 40% kit.

Anyway which boards do use 3u spacebars?

Filco minila is the main one, SP-111 can use a pair of them. Another split board was proposed and planned on using a pair, but the usual refrain here is that there aren’t many sets that support them and to instead use 2.25 and 2.75.

Count me in as another 3U spacebar user (GH60 board in minila configuration) who would love to see wider support in sets.  Not going to push for it in this set specifically if it's too far along already, but I'm very pleased to see they've become more widespread in sets recently as GMK have added the mould.
