The place where I spend way too much time

Nice and clean, but soooo little space for mouse

Should work completely fine, depending on sensitivity/DPI. :P I've always used the SteelSeries QCK Heavy (the largest one from SteelSeries), but now I'm using half of a small tekmat with no troubles. I just had to switch from 450 DPI to 1000+.

Yeah, I run with 1150 dpi and mostly play dota, so it's comfortable. I also move the keyboard over when I'm playing games, so it's more than enough space for me.

Ha, yes... I haven't seen lain for like 10 years but I totally know what you're talking about... it is a war between me and the cables, and my daughter does have kind of a lain haircut right now, though she has shown no ability to control computer networks with her mind. Yet.

And a shot of my standing desk mode, though no decent keyboard in the shot, it's currently my Leopold.

Indeed. Not something I do regularly. It's more seasonal or project related. I prefer standing, but I will probably be going for a full standing desktop (not the hacky ikea drawers) later on.

Nice: not entirely unlike my setup: I've got a 24" screen, a tiny HHKB in front of it, an Aeron chair like yours and a (very) old MacBook Pro laptop next to my main monitor. I'm not really using the MBP that much anymore: main computer is a (nearly silent) Linux PC hooked to the 24" + HHKB.

Even more similar then... that MBP is running Arch Linux full time :)

Ah cool! I'm also running a tiling WM: the "Awesome WM". I should try XMonad since I know a tiny bit of Haskell.

Regarding your MacBook running Linux: is the big monitor showing Gnome / Linux too?  I mean: are you using a dual-screen setup from your Linux MacBook?

If you have even a passing familiarity with Haskell I definitely recommend Xmonad. I've tried a lot of other tiling WMs and they each seem to have different separate strengths. Xmonad is great from a pure customization perspective.

That second monitor is definitely running off the MacBook. I actually stopped using the MBP for quite a while as it was a NIGHTMARE to get external monitor support working (this is due to the hardware display multiplexer that apple insists on using, instead of a common framebuffer approach to dual graphics cards). Once the ATI drivers had better power support (as of a couple months ago) I decided to just stop using the intel graphics on this MBP (which doesn't output at all to the external display) and switch to pure ATI.

Battery life has been better with Linux than under OS X on this unit (i7), though still pretty meager. I will probably head back to a pure Intel graphics laptop in the next 12 months once broadwell machines are out. Though I have also considered something like a novena so that I can do away with a built in keyboard entirely and just use whatever mechanical I want.

Agreed. I tried the pegboard thing, but it was too permanent. I bought a SIGNUM from Ikea many years ago and it's served me well for at least making it a little bit tidier under my desk.

I still don't get where you all are saying inconvenient. It takes all of half a second to cut a zip tie, I keep a pair of scissors in my desk as well as a few zip ties. It's only an inconvenience if do not have the extra zip ties on hand

and if you say cutting them is the hassle and not cutting a wire ..... just cut them on the back of the pegboard

I am probably going to ditch the ikea drawers. The thing i like about using grips for my desk components is that it's like rapid prototyping. I will be going back to an attached work surface on the pole somehow.

I am digging that standing "desk". Any info on it?

I worked professionally as a photographer for several years and have a fair amount of gear still, including a lot of manfrotto lighting grips. Lighting grip heads are super useful in general, along with super-clamps and 5/8" steel tubing is pretty cheap, so I use grips for kind of everything around the house now - e.g. lots of kids forts built with lighting grips :)

Like mashby mentioned above, his interest in the grip desk was travel related. Actually similar motivation on my part initially (I still go back to asia on a regular basis and wanted some sort of portable standing desk). In the end the main pole in this incarnation was too long for me to feel inclined to port it around with me on vacation (though I might do it locally if we head out to stay on some puget sound islands).

Cost is potentially prohibitive and I don't vouch for stability (it's all up to how you piece it together), but I really like the approach and it's still either all or part of my main desk (depending on the mode - standing or sitting).

Well, maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm not an 'murrican and I don't simply throw stuff away. Stereotype? Ummm...

I guarantee you I don't throw anywhere near that much away on a daily basis. 1lb of stuff maybe, but definitely not 4.5lbs

55 % of 2.04 kg is still a little over 1 kg. If you generate less waste, it's great, but scary at the same time, because there have to be fellow citizens, who raise the bar. O_o

I need to post my deliberate cable gore.

Lol... mine was not deliberate... just ended up like that over the years as I added more things :P Look at all the crap on my desk and around the computer :P

you sir need some zip ties and peg-board

Nice! I shall try that sometime in the future. I have to move soon so I don't want to have to do it all over again :P

Some wire loom works well. Sucks if you have to pull anything out of it though.

Another great solution!!! Will keep this in mind too.

Oh my god, yes. Someone have an elegant solution for floor tentacles?

LOL

You might and just not realize it.  Remember that that statistic probably includes food and anything else that makes its way into the landfill.  Also, if you've ever thrown away large items at any point it will contribute significantly toward your average.  For example, if you rent a dumpster and re-roof your house, that would be large enough to possibly offset a month or more of minimal waste.  Just a thought.  I obviously don't know you or your trash tendencies.  ;)

Don't forget that a good chunk of the waste is created just making the stuff that we buy and that we don't even see it or really feel that we participate in it.

Zip ties are pretty inconvenient, if you move stuff around a lot.

Agreed. I tried the pegboard thing, but it was too permanent. I bought a SIGNUM from Ikea many years ago and it's served me well for at least making it a little bit tidier under my desk.

I, too, bought a SIGNUM from Ikea.  One of the best things I bought - keeps the cables (all of them) up off the floor and away from my feet when I stretch my legs out under the desk.

Until I moved house.

It took about half a day to untangle everything from that damned twisted wire contraption, at one point I was just going to unscrew if from the desk and leave the cables tied around it.

At the new house I have not bothered using it, although it is still attached to the desk.

My cables resemble Vesper's :))
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That's actually a complete non-issue for me, because I have a standing desk. However, there are plenty of cables on the top of it. PS/2 extension for testing keyboards, the ErgoDox has two cables, then there are two Roccat Apuri hubs/bungees for a pointing device on each side of the keyboard, a webcam, a DAC/amp combo (headphones aren't wireless either), an USB 3.0 extension for an external HDD, charging portable devices...
