Hello everyone! This is TT from OwLab.
Today we are introducing a new keyboard designed by my designer friend Nomi and me.
The origin of this keyboard is to commemorate the music band -OWL which I set up and music I loved.
We started to have this design idea in May 2020. After four months of development and modification, we set up a group buy in China in September 2020.
With good feedbacks, we decide to bring it to all friends in the customized mechanical keyboard communities around the world!

the top design of the weight looks really nice, interesting implementation of the knob.
edit: what type of encoder does this use, and is there a press function?

For 320, that sounds pretty good
Nice job my friend
One suggestion I have is, maybe increasing the size of the brass weight. At this size it is only for decoration and does not serve as a real weight adder at all <3

Here's the encoder that we have used: http://www.kailh.com/en/Products/Encoder/EN65/372.html and there is no press function.

Thanks for you suggestion! However all parts of the case have finished production and we are running the NA sale as in stock, we won't be able to change the design.
With that said, we will definitely consider increasing the size of the weight next time!

A bigger weight would be nice, but remember that'll just add to the price. Overall I agree though, for the price this is very nice & a project I'll be following!

Thanks! It is more of a design choice instead of cost consideration. Unbuilt Voice65% weighs about 1.4-1.5kg and the finished build goes around 1.8kg. We think that is quite enough for a 65%.

A pleasant change of atmosphere
It has been a long trial and error until we found the most reasonable implementation of the design and the price point.
That change did take a lot of time and consideration to happen, which we didn't expect in the beginning.
We are proud of it and glad you like it. :)

Have a question, is the knob aluminum?

Have a question, is the knob aluminum?
Yes, it's 6063 Aluminum.
-
I have a question. Do all 3 color options have the same bottom color?
-
Is there a way to get it without the weight branding?
-
I have a question. Do all 3 color options have the same bottom color?
Yes the bottom case is the same for all colors.
-
A neat design so far and the roller switch is a great idea. Putting more than one roller on the board with some software to match could allow volume controls for separate devices which would be cool, or possibly one for volume and one for scroll.
-

unfortunately we have manufactured all the weights so it is not possible

That is a good idea! We'll def consider putting a few more roller/scroll and even try to place them in different positions next time. As for software, I recently bumped in one called MIDI2LR, which uses the MIDI function that is embedded in the QMK to control the Adobe Lightroom. Feel free to check it out on YouTube.

couldn't this also be done with layers?

Unsure which function are you talking about but MIDI is actually realized using layers, just a different kind of MIDI layers to deal with some functions that aren't controllable with traditional keyboard shortcuts (e.g.: ctrl+shift+e).

oh, I meant, for example having one wheel for volume and one wheel for scroll, you could just program them on different layers instead, so there is no need for two wheels

Indeed, with layers. I guess it's down to preference when some other ppl want to have more physical keys/gadgets but we value the balance of the function and aesthetics so this is a good solution for us. Hope you like it. :)

We worried a lot about our development speed, tbh. Glad we got the dibs. We'd love to see more creative designs but we have to admit it takes more than time and effort to make a decision deploying a new gadget.

Have you ever consider making the scroll wheel on the left... it would be more intuitive if any form of rotary encoder device to be put on the left because most people use their right hand for mouse. I feel like I will smacking my mouse hand to the scroll wheel. If there's I think there's instance I want to use the scroll wheel and the mouse at the same time, I can use my left hand to operate the scroll wheel and right hand for the mouse.

We have thought about in the development process. To keep a rectangular shape and keeping the ESC botton as well as a relatively thin bezel are our priorities thus the left side scroll wheel route wasn't taken at the end. We feel you about holding the mouse while using the wheel tho. We will review that path if we have more freedom in the bezel design choices and the technical ability to realize that perhaps on the side (like a camera scroll well, on the side instead of the front)
-
Man this looks super cool. Might have to keep my eye out for this.

That's what I was thinking when I originally saw it as well. Would be great to have layers change the functionality (volume, horizontal vs vertical scroll)
But yea, definitely interested the board :)

if you are suggesting turning off the per key rgb while keeping the strip on, then yes it's possible. :)
-
I like the way you design the scrolling wheel!
-
Got my Voice 65 from the Chinese GB today! I'm typing on it right now. The board feels great and I love the wheel for volume control. I turn the per key rgb off but leave the light strip on just for a little flair. The light strip can be customized to match keycap sets which is great aesthetically. I also like that you can change the saturation of the rgb as well to make the light color white when I just want something very neutral. I'll make a reddit post with a mini review soon.

I think the left scroll is aesthetically better than the right scroll. The space bar is centered so that it is symmetrical and convenient to use the mouse and knob at the same time. If you release the sequel like that, I will buy it by any means possible.

What happened with this? I tired to make sense of the email i got from discord (I hate actually having to go to discord.)
Did i read that right? 50k people tried to order at the same, or around the same time? Jeez... This hobby is getting crazy popular.
I hope the discord gave more warning for the sale.. I check geekhack daily, and this came out of nowhere. Luckily, i decided to pass on this one anyway...but dang.. Sucks for anyone that really wanted one.

Sounded like a bot tried to checkout thousands of times? There were about 1,000 people on discord at the time of the sale so I don't think it was quite that many people but everyone was constantly refreshing and trying to get through.
-
hope i get one ... **** bots, flipping is one thing but botscripts are just the lowest form of dirt!
-
More effort needs to be put into stopping bots from buying these so that people can flip them. This is destroying the hobby. I have friends who I would love to get into this hobby, they are interested but the price of just about everything puts them off. It should not just be for elite, if should be for everybody. Good keyboards are a human right. :)

I wanted to follow up to this fiasco of a sale and my tale of woe.
Everyone by now knows of all the issues this sale had... overtaxing the credit card processors, stretching the sale over 3 spread out days instead of just the 1 as a result; limiting orders.. cancelling orders, etc..
Well I thought I dodged those bullet. I was one of the very lucky few who was able to place my order within the first 30 seconds of the sale opening. I was able to get through the OceanPay nonsense, and my order was confirmed and I received the confirmation email at :02 after the sale opened. (email header below)

I ordered 1 yellow and 1 "blurple" keyboard for my wife and myself and the order limit was communicated to be 2...
Fast forward to today 2/5. I receive an email that my order was out of stock and that I could either cancel my order or accept a white instead. I responded to the email asking which color was out of stock (it wasn't communicated) and that it shouldn't be possible for an order completed in the first minute of the sale to have a color out of stock.
The response to that was stunning. Not only was yellow out of stock, but so was "blurple". Below is the response sent to me from popkeyboard:
As the freight is about to be suspended, we carry out the loading according to the country/region. When your order is being packed, the yellow and blue are out of stock. Now only white is left.
....they fulfilled orders NOT by ordering sequence... NOT by confirmation of order... but by which regions were shipped to first. That is unacceptable, imho.
I suggest everyone take note and excercise extreme caution when ordering from OwlLab or PopKeyboards in the future.
