Enter key Doorbell

Nothing new or very pretty but it's been working fine for a few months now. Visitors actually use it instead of knocking down the door. It replaces a $30 unreliable wireless unit that died after 2 years. By the [strike]laziness and [/strike]mercy of the people it hasn't yet been subject to vandalism or keycap theft.

I used a Black MX switch from a POS Cherry board and dremeled a case from a floss box. I didn't bother to include the key stablilizer.

It's hooked up to a $5 doorbell whose chime also sounds hilariously cheap but it's adequately loud and therefore practical.

I like!

Sets me thinking... how about a version with two keys... say, 'O' and 'I' like the hardcore keyboard someone has as their avatar... with the right bell(s), one key could do 'ding', the other 'dong'... be a curious social experiment to see who chooses which button lol

Nice, but I wonder if not a keypad Enter from a MX 11x00 would have been better when mounted vertically.

Nice

I had considered trying an Arduino + Waveshield for a fancier system that'd also light up at dusk (and disable or change or silence a doorbell at night), but alas I'm too lazy to get that up and running just yet.

Sure, that would work if you wanted a plainer look, and the vertical slope could afford easier pressing. I destroyed my numpad Enter key for its stem, earlier, but I mostly just like the arrow (↲) on the Return key and its resulting alignment and sideways slope, given that the doorbell is mounted to the left of the door. Not to mention that the floss box already has tiny vertical slope :>

I had also obtained some white keycaps but haven't gotten around to dying one red or orange... I'm a bit hesitant to make it stand out even more :D

A great idea I read was to have the doorbell switch operate a solenoid to knock on the door. Must do that one day.
