Ducky 1087/9000/9008/9008G2 vs Filco (Cherry MX Red)
« on: Sat, 04 June 2011, 10:51:31 »
Hello geekhack!

I've been looking arround for a while now and decided I want to buy a mechanical keyboard.
Also I've decided that I'd love to have a keyboard with Cherry MX Red switches.
But now I can't choose between what brands.
First I was doubting between Leopold, Ducky and Filco, but apparantly Leopold parts are hard to replace unlike the Ducky / Filco ones (with keycaps etc.) so I've decided not to go for a Leopold.
Now I cannot decide wether to go for a Ducky or a Filco keyboard.
Also I'm looking for a wrist-rest (I saw Ducky and Filco both have wrist rests but the Filco ones seem very pricy :()
It also seems there are some Ducky keyboards which come with an included wrist-rest but I can't seem to find out which model includes these.
Ducky has many models, 1087 (apparantly Tenkeyless), 9000, 9008, 9008G2, but I've got no idea what the differences are between these models.
Anyone happens to've tried both Ducky and Filco keyboards and can give me some suggestions?

Help is much appreciated!

To make things easier for you, Plu, Plum and Noppoo are all rolling out models with red switches as well.

Meanwhile, I don't think there's a 1087 with reds, in fact the only red switch toting Duckies are 9000G2 and the soon to be released 9008G2 limited white edition.

I've saw those Plu floating arround on ebay but I haven't been able to find much info about them, are they reliable quality brands? Also I'm wondering what is the difference between the 9000G2 & 9008G2? And do any of them come with a wrist-rest? (Saw some ducky's coming with wrist rest on some unboxing videos and other's didn't)

Also I've seen Ducky's with ABS & PBT, anyone know what's the difference? :P

Does anyone know how a Ducky feels compared to a Filco?
I've heard people say a Filco has more cripsness & Leopold is more gummy then a Filco, but I've got no idea how Ducky's fit in? Are they crispy or gummy?

Welcome another 'ster member to geekhack!

Here is what I know about Filco reds, as I had been trying to get one.

Without using a buying agent, the only place that I know where you can buy a Filco TKL red is kebyoardco.com.  And there are only 2 left, but there are a lot more 104s left there.  The last batch of Filco TKL reds on Amazon are soldout.  And from what diatec in Japan said, the next batch of Filco reds going to Amazon are only 104s.  There will be no more TKL reds going to Amazon, as least not for quite some time.  So the "Limited" description on these reds was true. :-).  Even more rare is the White body Filco wth MX Red switches.  They were only sold in China.

The only place I found Filco TKL reds was on taobao.com.  There are still quite a few sellers selling Filco reds in black body.  There are only a couple sellers still have the white body reds in stock.  taobaobee.com found and bought a white one for me and it is on its way to me.

Good luck.  I am sure you will enjoy any mechanical keyboard you end up purchasing.

Thx for your reply litster! ;)

The ones one keyboardco are very expensive compared to the ones from asia :(
http://www.armygroup.com.tw/shop/goods.php?id=6092
(This one is chinese layout tho, the english ones are out of stock there, 4300TWD aka: 92 pounds and I've got no idea if the english ones will be back in stock, they do have full-size english ones left tho but those are 106 pounds)
http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=821
(English layout but 156 pounds :()

Is a Filco really that much better compared to a Ducky? And does anyone have a clue if the 9000G2 (red) or 9008G2 (red) comes with a wrist-rest? (Having to pay 156 pound + 50~ish for filco wristrest is kinda out of my budget :/)

If you buy the Chinese version, you can buy this: http://www.armygroup.com.tw/shop/goods.php?id=4465, which is English keycaps to swap.  English letters are still printed on the Chinese version, it just has the extra Chinese glyphs on the caps as well.

Filco has been around longer than the Chinese clones.  I haven't typed on anything but Filcos, Realforce/Topre, and some older DAS (see my signature).  But a friend of mine who has just recently fallen in love with Filco browns after he used Realforce Topre for a couple of years, said that he likes Filco more than Leopold and PLU.  He said The wide keys on Filco are the best among all of them.

He bought a MX brown from each brand to test them all, and are selling all but the Filco, and he just ordered 3 more Filco Ninja browns, one from suntec in Hong Kong earlier, and 2 more from Amazon yesterday when it became in stock.  Yes, he is crazy like us.

Weird why they closed that yea, prolly don't wanna give their "friends" @ Ducky a "bad name", which is very odd, don't add your brand to poor-quality products then imo.

Those are not characters.  They are glyphs that you type to build character.

I read Chinese.  And I am Chinese.

Quack?

The seal character on the left is "虎", or Tiger. The two characters on the right are "庚寅", which is the Chinese calendar year that roughly coincides with the Gregorian calendar year 2010 expressed in the traditional Chinese Stems-and-Branches notation, or, simply, the Year of Tiger.

Those characters are written in old style, so it is harder for me to tell. The left, larger character is "Tiger".  The smaller two characters are 庚寅, the calendar name for year of the Tiger year 2010. See row 27 on the table on this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_calendar_correspondence_table.

Ducky MX Red 104 from PCHome in Taiwan, $10 shipping to the US:
http://global.pchome.com.tw/?mod=item&func=exhibit&IT_NO=DCAH0X-A55611213&SR_NO=DCAH0F&ROWNO=2&tm=u

taobao is China's version of ebay, except it only takes Chinese Yuan from China banks.  If you want to buy from taobao, you need a buying agent like taobaobee or obook.  Search around here and you will find the info you need.

These are all the reds PCHome carries.  No TKL.

I just purchased a Filco TKL with MX Red on taobao.com via taoboabee.com.  http://www.taobaobee.com/recommend.php?action=view&gid=1455

Keyboard price + local shipping to buying agent + commision + credit card tranfer fee + shipping to the US = US$270.

That would be cos the G2s are "special edition" boards. 3890 TWD is still less than 93€ though, not outrageously expensive by any means.

They said they were developing one on their facebook. Hopefully they are still at it.

I am not being factious (really), Duckys aren't much cheaper than a Filco (based on what was on ebay and what is on tankguys' site now), its quality isn't proven yet, and you can buy a tenkeyless Filco or even a Leopold now.  Just curious, why are you guys so incline in getting a Ducky?  Thanks.

They are cheaper in Asia is why.
^

It's so much more expensive for me to buy a Filco from somewhere compared to a ducky, I'd be paying arround 160 euro to get a Filco with reds and a Ducky remains below 100.
(Pchome shipping to US is 10$, EU 20$, they sell only Ducky's, and Armygroup who sell filco's shipping to EU was 76$ for me :/)

edit: No doubt Filco > Ducky atm, but some ppl budget don't allow it :P, and Ducky should atleast be decent/solid keyboards also ;) (the 9008 series atleast)

That's a lot cheaper for you folks in Europe.  It is good to be an American living in the US.  Proud to be an infidel!  ;)

Oops.  Thought you were Asian.
I wish... :P Asia = mech keyboard heaven, even the possibility to try them out in stores lol, if only we had that over here in the Netherlands :)

True, it's quite a big diff, if the diff only was like 20-30$ I'd instantly go for a Filco, but this shipping cost adds so much, and I've got no idea why it's so much more expensive on armygroup then on pchome :/

That's easy. Don't get the 1087.  It cracks easily.

Did some checking and apparantly this cracking/breaking problem & the visible-PCB problem were only with the first few batches and are resolves now! :)

edit: Anyone has a clue where they sell Ducky 1087 white keyboards?
