Title: LEAST ERGONOMIC KEYBOARD
Post by: microsoft windows on Sun, 20 September 2015, 13:24:55
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE LEAST ERGONOMIC KEYBOARD?

I WOULD PUT THIS PRODUCT AT THE TOP OF THE LIST:

That Apple keyboard is definitely a candidate. Very mushy keys and the keytops are too wide. I wouldn't want to use one for any length of time.

A couple days ago, I used a touchscreen keyboard on a public terminal that had the glass maybe an inch from the screen, no visual feedback, audio feedback that was anything between zero to three chirps per keypress and the keys in alphabetical order ...
OK, it was bad from a usability standpoint, but not catastrophic for ergonomics.

The Malling-Hansen Writing Ball. Sure, it's mechanical, but I get RSI just looking at it.

Touchscreen keyboard on a tablet like the Surface.

This is second worst:

But let's not forget this guy.

Almost everything I've typed on made by Apple!

Their old keyboards were legit though, Alps son. There new stuff is garbage with a lowercase 'g'.

HP 200 LX is pretty heinous. It's about 7 inches wide, for reference.

Anything touch screen, nothing but a metal dome, and that laser projected keyboard should all tie the top of this list.

Just for the heck of it, I tried a $5 keyboard that was in an electronics surplus store. Gave mushy a whole new meaning. The keys were like pressing into play dough.

Heh, yeah that's true. I tried a few dome keyboards at good will just to see, and I can't believe that I used to use one. They just felt so horrible. Though the Microsoft one was a good looking so I picked it up, maybe I'll mod with switches later cause I like the layout.

The silicone rubber keyboards that you can roll up. Mushiness combined with no stability.

Microsoft "Touch Cover" is also one of the worst.

I almost hate to say it, but the Commodore 64 was the worst--too high up and mush, mush, mush.  My TI994A was much better even though it was too high as well.

Modern day 'freebie keyboards' are the pits with almost no tactile feedback, and the MS surface cover keyboards, even the one with the super slim scissor switches sucks horribly.

I think this one's worse:

At least you can project the laser one onto a softish surface...

I always wanted one of these.  This and the virtual monitor from years back that you put over one eye so you could see a normal computer screen but no one else could.

I bet my brother would love that since he's always on touchscreens.  Any way to find that thing anymore?

I find that many mechanical keyboards have wayyy too much tilt for my liking. I don't know why it seems to be the standard, need more negative tilt!
Title: Re: LEAST ERGONOMIC KEYBOARD
Post by: Findecanor on Sat, 03 October 2015, 08:18:04
I agree with the tilt. Keyboards should be as flat as possible. If people want more tilt then they should retract the keyboard feet on the underside: that is what they are for!

I think it's because most people have to stretch to get to the upper keys without any tilt.  Of course, this can be altered with hand position, etc., but I guess most designs are made for those that would otherwise have to stretch.  I know I'm in that camp--I have to have my positive tilt, usually with the risers fully extended.

Have you tried search engines? It has its own wiki article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hansen_Writing_Ball), in which the abstract reads:
Quote
The Hansen Writing Ball is an early typewriter. It was invented in 1865 and patented and put into production in 1870, and was the first commercially produced typewriter.

Oh God yes, the new keyboard is awful on that machine.  Interesting to note though Linus did not say that many bad things about it.  IIRC he got used to it after a while. Maybe I just did not give it enough time when I went browsing in the Apple Store.

I found a different copy of a different file, but it's worse than the original copy of the uploaded original. Is this fine?

Ironically enough, I find the Microsoft ergonomic keyboard to be one of the most annoying boards to type on and it does not feel ergonomic to me at all.

I have this monstrosity attached to my laptop. Zero travel, no feedback, like tapping on a table, approx. 10% letters don't get hit. The worst.

EDIT: feedback is available --though I can't find the utility that enables it-- which generates a little "pop" though the speakers approx. 0.5s after the keypress. Truly an atrocity, and the reason I got into mech keyboards.
