We are going to see yet another mechanical gaming keyboard with either Cherry MX blue or brown in USA/Europe. The keyboard will look quite silly and have gaming-specific keys and functions.

Unicomp will make a tenkeyless black version of the IBM M2 with N-key rollover and USB for gamers (... or at least, I think that they should!)

Here are my 2011 predictions again, from the 2010 thread:

I'm hoping we see the Optimus Popularis during 2011.

As there are symphony orchestras in China, and the ability of computer chips to synthesize sound just keeps improving, I'm expecting someone in China to come out with a cheap keyboard that's almost as good as a Tyros 2, and pretty much sweep the market.

Oh, wrong kind of keyboard.

I think that the beam spring keyboard will return someday... but not necessarily next year. Sometime before 2020, though, I think it will be tried. It is possible, however, that the result will be as awful as the buckling spring keyboards made for a time by one Chinese company.

Keys with hemispherical depressions? Not likely; the seriously retro keyboard fan is just not a big enough market. Although I wouldn't put it past Fwiffo - or ClickClack - or whoever it is around here that does those things - to organize having a set of keycap replacements like that made for people here if there were enough demand. But out there in the real commercial world? I don't know how it could happen.

Interestingly enough as you mentioned, there has been relatively little interest in those from what I have gathered as well.

- HHKB will break the $300 price mark
- Ripster will break the 30K post mark
- more Chinese mechanical keyboards will appear. We might see even rise in Asian-made Cherry MX switch clones, of course rated at 50M
- GH's useful content will be heavily reduced due to the same posts "which keyz for 1337 gaming?" and "OMG, Duckees!!!" filling the Keyboard forum
- iMav will finally disable attaching pictures over certain restricted size/resolution
- MW will still be trolling
- I won't find an NIB IBM SpaceSaver
- KeyboardCo will add even more brands/models and continue being the reliable source for EU citizens

There will be a lot more mechanical keyboards, mostly aimed at gamers, with appropriately stupid marketing. Logitech will have one.

Apple will make a touch-pad keyboard without keys. It'll be an even more horrible experience than their mice, but Mac weenies will cream their jeans. Other companies will play copycat and make even ****tier touch-pad keyboards.

I've actually done exactly that. A couple of 486 "pizza boxes", along with another PC and a monitor. They first flew 3 floors to the ground, then were hacked with a pickax. I still keep as a souvenir one of the 60W mini power supplies with a big pickax dent on it, but still in working condition.

As I understand it, it's a plastic membrane keyboard which has a resistor matrix (and the usual contact points) screenprinted directly onto/into the membrane plastics with a conductive ink. Sort of the same X-Y principle as old (resistive) touchscreen panels, though tangled up (and maybe layered) like a regular key matrix. By measuring voltage drops between sets of keys (through an ADC input in the keyboard controller chip) and comparing the differentials against a little (firmware coded) lookup table, you can effectively duplicate the functionality of a full (or lots) KRO diode-matrix layout. Diodes are really cheap, but screenprinting in mass quantities is even cheaper, plus typical cheap**** gutless keyboard microcontrollers already have ADC input lines (previously dedicated towards debounce, I think, though that's not necessary with this sort of implementation). Microsoft already has at least one such keyboard on market (one of the SideWinders, I think); their marketing spin on it emphasizes that it's "superior" to mechanical keyboards (insofar as the context of comparing it's NKRO "antighosting" against selected 2KRO mechanical models).

I'm not sure, but I think the tech can (with a beefy enough microcontroller) also measure relative key pressure as well. Maybe it's what MS uses in that multitouch/accessibility prototype thingy they announced a year or so back.

Maybe it's called a Resistor Grid Membrane or Resistive Key Matrix or whatever. Doesn't change the fact that it's still a membrane keyboard which lacks any sort of real keyswitches. Great if you spill liquid on it, otherwise blatantly inferior even compared against rubber polydomes. Cheap and disposable, welcome to the future.

If someone doesn't make a decent inline converter for XT and IBM terminal keyboards available within the next year, I will be shocked.

I also predict that if the new Commodore 64 is at all successful, then there will be an awakening among non-believers as they are forced to experience blue Cherries switches.

Notable Switches I have tried:
black cherry, blue cherry, brown cherry, clear cherry, cherry M84, white alps, black alps, cream alps, Monterey blue alps, Fujitsu Peerless, Gateway2000 rubber dome, Keytronic rubber dome, Model M buckling spring, Model F buckling spring, futaba, black space invader

I'd love to see that feature. When I saw the demo video last year (actually in 2009) 2 things crossed my mind: fps and racing games.
It will be amazing for racing games if those keyboards are also nkro, or even better x4's kro for usb. For fps games it'll need to be implemented in actual games but it has a lot of potential

Bluetooth mechanicals.

I wish this would happen but I've given up hope. I certainly don't think we'll see it this year.

No doubt if we do there'll be no option for Mac key caps...

For now I'm using a five year old Apple Bluetooth keyboard which is barely adequate. I'd upgrade to their current model but they've cut off the number pad and other keys. It's a pity because despite the thinness it's not unpleasant to type on.

I suppose I could buy a Model M and hack bluetooth into it.

I am glad to report that two of my predictions in the OP are indeed true.   Comptek2wks over $300 and a US bought Filco I got from Amazon a few days ago.

I thought your prediction was a NEW USA distributor for Filco. That sure wouldn't be correct.
