Help an idiot with LEDs on his NerD60
« on: Thu, 25 May 2017, 11:00:10 »
o/
I want to build a NerD60 with a complete blue build. I picked up the Mekanisk/1UpKeyboards edition of the NerD60 and the Sentraq 60% High Profile case. Now this case would be a huge waste if I didnt put some Underglow in there.
I already know that I'll need 1206 SMD LEDs for the NerD60, but even with GONs SMD-LED manual I'm still need some aid: Is the place for the SMD-LEDs on the board the spots indicated as S-LED?If so, will I be fine with 40 of them? (I did a rough count and got to ~30). Will I need any resistors? How will I go about soldering them on?

Thanks for any aid :)

If you require any help with your keyboard id love to help, sadly I don't know anything about building "keebs"

Now I'm confused.

Yes you'll need resistors, they should be the same as the resistors for the in switch LEDs.

I don't think it took 40 LEDs to do side lighting on my GON HHKB but I could be wrong.

You solder them standing up so the light is emitted out the side of the case instead of downward.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Are you sure? I just checked mine and saw there were Resistors with marking "1330" right next to any of the Side-LED slots.

I'd love to provide a picture, but mine would be terrible quality. So I'll just post a crop of the picture on Mekanisk:
And if I do need some: Will those work? https://www.amazon.de/Widerstand-133k-1206-5000x-RC1206FR07133K/dp/B00MWRAYGE/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1495816598&sr=8-2-fkmr1&keywords=Widerstand+133+Ohm

I was wrong about the resistors being the same. No those won't work, you need 133 Ohm not 133k Ohm.

So I'll still need some?
Yes, any LED on a keyboard will require a resistor.

Well yeah, but I dont know if they're presoldered. According to Mekanisk there are Resistors for LEDs pre-soldered. However, I don't know if this includes SMD-LED resistors. I only know that there's something that looks like a resistor right next to the SLED component.
****, getting parts for a keeb would be so much easier if I had any experience in building stuff with electronics

Post a picture of the board. Also there should be some sort of notation on the board to let you know what's a resistor.

Can't take a decent one (trust me, I tried). I can only provide that from Mekanisk itself:

Show Image

That has all the resistors already on it so if your PCB looks exactly like that you only need the LEDs.
