Regarding GMK Classic Beige GB - UPDATE 27/07/15
« on: Tue, 27 January 2015, 09:05:49 »
Hello guys,

I've been getting at least a PM per day asking 'WHEN'S THE GMK BEIGE GB HAPPENING?'

My initial plan was run it right at the end of January.

However, I understand the importance of the community not running more than one similar GMK GBs at once. 85|15 is still ongoing, and GMK Hyperfuse will be starting in the next few days.

Because of this, I have decided to delay the start of the group buy by a few weeks. As soon as me and Bunny feel Hyperfuse has had an appropriate time to gather orders, and as soon as people's wallets have had time to refresh.. Beige will launch.

In the mean time, here are mockups of the two sets on offer. Keys are not subject to change. Get hype.

This is the closest you will get to an exact Cherry replica. Perfect original legends, A-profile tsangan row, win98 keys (and modern ones for those that don't like them). HHKB, 75% support in the extra kit, as well as windowed keys and ISO.

The win98 keys are really what is getting me in this, I will have to save some money for this, it would be a shame if I miss it

It is good for the community to be advised well in advance of the upcoming offers... Isn't it? With no harm intended for the current running GB and ICs.

I just wonder why the modifiers set does not have all the keys to be a stand alone one, thus it only will work if you get the main one.

It's an extra set with some support for less used layouts as well as some popular and hard to get keys like the windowed locks and symmetrical \| and ~`. It's meant to be quite cheap, and bought along with this set, or used with beige Cherry sets you already own. It's not meant to be a full modifier kit.

I cannot agree more. But as we know, different shades of beige may get these keys to look out of place along with already owned ones, that is precisely the reason I wonder why, if a few extra keys could give it far more value.

I understand your concern but the keys needed for a full modifier set, even for just the main 60% cluster, would raise the price quite drastically. It is very cheap at the moment, and I want to keep it that way.

I think the tones will be close enough to not be too noticable, so long as your set isn't very yellowed :) But, really, it is primarily meant to be used with the main set of this GB.

FYI, the stepped 1.75u control key is 'Ctrl' only because GMK cannot do a stepped 'Control' key. I wish it weren't the case, but it is :(

dat Win98 logo... I assume it will be pad printed?

I don't have a plan for winkey but shall we add a 1.25x R4 Capslock for people who goes with 1.25x bottom row layout?

Yes, pad printed. Included win8 doubleshots for the people that will moan about pad print, even though it looks just as good as doubleshot.

GMK does not do R4 1.25u Caps Lock, otherwise I would have added it.

Ah my bad, I've mistaken the one on the 0499, which I clearly forgot about the window so that key would be pad print, so 1.25 doubleshot Capslock never exists, that's sad :(

//having some key pad printed in the set is not the problem to me though, it's just the old logo I don't like :))

I'll be buying this, but I agree with Hoff, can you add 1u 0 and 00?

Keys are not subject to change.

Sorry.

I thought long and hard about the key selection. I discussed it with many people whose opinions I trust (hoff included ;)). I think the current set has a very good balance between functionality and price. I'm afraid that not every layout can be supported, and while 2 keys might not be much, if I add those then I will have people asking 'well can you add these 2 too?'. The fact of the matter is that not many people will use those keys. I've included the keys I believe will be most popular.

The original extra kit fully supported 1800 layout and had both the keys you ask for. It had about 50+ keys, and the price was really high. No way would it have reached MOQ.

I love everything about that set. Perfect choice of legends and everything.

Finally a GMK GB where I don't have to make compromises.

The only thing I am afraid of is the extra kit no reaching MOQ. I need this for the symmetry keys :p

I will say this repeatedly when the group buy opens.

If there's something in the extra kit you want, consider buying multiples. It will help a lot if you're worried about it hitting MOQ. Even if there's nothing you want, consider buying it anyway.

I know I will be buying about 5 sets myself just for the windowed keys.

That's a good approach I think  :thumb:

I need to applaude you again for the perfect set composition. No bull**** extras, no whacky legends just the most reasonable keys.

It's getting kinda unbearable to follow all the GMK interest checks that go nowhere because people demand random keys for their exotic keyboards.

I hope this will be the new standard for GMK GBs and if TJ goes through with his GMK Klaxon Set this is what he should go for!

I wish Ivan wasn't so stubborn and insisted on offering something that hadn't been made before in his GBs.

Uncommon stuff like the F-Row in his 85/15 GB will scare more people away than it attracts.

Most people want the classic stuff and for GMK GBs you have to cater to the lowest common denominator.

This is why his Dolch GB made it and this is why your GB will suceed  :thumb:

With all due respect Ivan's mods set may complement this set, as it has the same plastic color codes, and same fonts. No intention to derailed this abundant admiration for the set, neither disrespect anyone. However, Ivan's one does not have classic legends along with arrows.

GMK cannot do any winkey-related doubleshots for R5 1u keys, so I went with just pad printed win98 keys.

Sweet set, I've already got a Classic Beige from Originative but I'll probably get an addon pack just for the R3 Control and HHKB keys.

Glad to see you've got some Win8 keys in the main set, I'll probably try and trade the Win7 keys off my set with someone!
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Really nice set, but may I offer my thoughts on the modpack?

You mentioned that you want to avoid an expensive set; therefore, you don't include all that many keys, but here's what I find confusing:

Just exactly how many people use a HHKB layout? Adding all the Vipers and KMAC Happy and what nots together, do we actually have enough people to include the keys in the modpack... say VS the Cherry 1800 layout?

I find a lot of these packs don't include keys to support the 1800 layout, and would love to see it, it's just three extra keys:
1x "+", 1x "-" (different profile), 1x "0"

If you ask me, there are a lot more people with the 1800 layout than the HHKB layout, so would you consider adding those 3 keys to the modpack?

Just exactly how many people use a HHKB layout? Adding all the Vipers and KMAC Happy and what nots together, do we actually have enough people to include the keys in the modpack... say VS the Cherry 1800 layout?

I find a lot of these packs don't include keys to support the 1800 layout, and would love to see it, it's just three extra keys:
1x "+", 1x "-" (different profile), 1x "0"

If you ask me, there are a lot more people with the 1800 layout than the HHKB layout, so would you consider adding those 3 keys to the modpack?

I will never understand why people are asking for 1800 keys when you can already find an abundance of 1800's with this exact same colorway. Seems completely pointless.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I will never understand why people are telling others to spend an additional $50 (atleast) for the sake of obtaining only 3 keys out of 101 keys from the keyset (which as I'm aware of, is only sold on Taobao, so add extra agent fees and shipping fees), when it could be included in a modpack for a relatively trivial increase of price. Seems completely reasonable to include it.

Edit:

Here is the Taobao link to the only place that I can find the 1800 keycaps for sale, so you want everyone who wants the 3 extra 1800 keys to pay roughly ~$46 before shipping and agent fees, so let's say $60 USD to their door, just for three extra keys? It would be awesome if it could be included in this pack, specifically due to the completeness and minimal price increase (3 keys) it would take. We also have a lot of G80-1800 and Leeku-1800 users that would really appreciate and support this GB to reach MOQ.

1800 requires more keys than that. You need E profile del/end/pgdn. Price is less trivial after those. Looking at roughly $8 added.

1800 was originally in there, but it was one of the things that got removed so the price could be lowered from the ridiculously high price it was before.

Why do you need to buy this set at all if you're interested in fitting out an 1800? You can just buy the set off Taobao, eBay etc and be done with it.

And IMHO you're seriously over-estimating the number of 1800 users. Lots of people might one laying around but very few people use them as daily drivers. And when you consider a lot of 1800 boards already have beige double-shots I don't think many people are going to be buying a set to replace the originals.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.
